If a GM plays kobolds correctly, nobody under lvl 5 should ever survive.

I did a circe thing an insane naked guy was running around outside the tavern; the cook screaming in the kitchen as the goat she was butchering became a beheaded orc; another orc fell from The claws of a wyvern

    Another Great Vid!
I ran Curse of Strahd a few years ago, and LOVED using scarecrows for the first few levels. I'm stoked that they made your list!

What I like about the D&D goblins ( tusser in norwegian ) is their different skin color, yellow- tan instead of the tiresome trope of green in most fantasy. Kobolds are redish but which third fodder faction is blue? I were on a session were our D.M had this scenario where bigger/ normal races that dosent breed like rabbits, were in the minority on the planet. While ratlings, kobolds and goblins had larce swathes of territory. We helped a rat king disguised/ polymorphed as a half naked dude, slaying through hordes of ratlings so he could get his armor. Polymorphed back to true ratman form after donning the royal armor and thanked us! We got escorted back to the surface after agreeing to finding his kidnapped rat queen and rolled dice for huge amounts of gold as thanks. Wholesome king. Guess we slayed his rebels 😂

Very awesome info Odin! That sounds like a helluva adventure. Sounds like the DM was thinking outside the box which is always fun. Thanks again for watching. Always a pleasure seeing you in the comment section!

Actually, red and blue are also covered within the goblinoid family with hobgoblins and bugbears respectively (specifically, bugbears can range from tan to blue and goblins can be a variety of yellows and greens, while hobgoblins have a spectrum through orange, brown, and red with the chance for the other goblinoids to share that reddish range of coloration, they're not just what the one example art piece in the Monster Manual shows). Maybe bugbears are too strong to be considered low level fodder, but, although they're pretty dangerous and have high AC by default, hobgoblins are still fairly easy to dispatch in a straight-up fight.
Personally, I love using goblins, especially for brand new players, since they're so flexible and recognizable. Most people have some idea what a goblin is no matter their background, and they can easily be used as hostile, neutral, or friendly NPCs, even all within the same campaign (for instance, individual goblins that don't take orders from hobgoblins or bugbears too well, or that are too old/young/infirm to be useful, might get bullied, locked away, and/or ousted, opening the door for them gaining the sympathies of your players and their characters). I like to very the equipment they have on hand depending on the situation (like disorganized raiders or scouts with cobbled together armor, daggers, and improvised weapons from broken furniture or wagon parts, with individual goblins having only a melee weapon or a ranged weapon, not both, with maybe only the leader of the group getting a scimitar and shield for the party's first encounter further from a goblinoid lair).
Also use their propensity for retreating from clear defeat conditions to make for more dynamic consequences (if the party doesn't allow them the escape, the more organized troops with a hobgoblin looking over their shoulders may halt their advance to wait for reinforcements, buying the party time for a long rest and further preparation at the expense of a larger group to fight against, while if some of those first goblins get away the party only has time for a short rest to fight a smaller attack force with the hobgob judging the size of the opposition worth quickly keeping the pressure on). And then give squad leader hobgoblins custom gear load-outs, including first dibs on any magical loot they may have claimed if they're particularly successful (which of course becomes the party's loot once they're defeated), and/or a boon or tweak the equivalent of (or actually just gaining) a Feat (since I do provide players each with a Feat at level 1).
Furthermore, while goblinnoids can be cruel and destructive, they value being able to claim resources intact when they can and would rather capture or restrain creatures than kill them right away. In a fight, goblins would much rather down targets that are still standing than try to kill someone who's not an immediate threat, and may even neglect to check for life signs from anyone who's not moving after a complete victory unless directly ordered to do so. "Not my problem. Not doing more work than I have to."

:o you're so close to a 1000 subscribers you guys!!!!
Also if you ever do tiktoks or RUclips shorts (both which I've heard are great for new content creators) this would be an amazing idea. Creating/explaining 1-2 encounters per short video

Scarecrows are great. You can spice them up really well.
Scarecrows made by a cult could use an antlered head give the scarecrow a charge and gore attack. Scarecrow made by a hag having sacks of insects or a bag of poisonous gas when the scarecrow is hit with piercing or slashing cut the bag open.
Team the the scarecrow with smoke Mephets and blights and you have a burned down farm adventure

I'm going to run my gnomish construct with the self-destruct cloud animating all the tiny objects within the poison gas. Maybe even have a slight breeze going down the hallway which keeps animating new objects unless the players or until it eventually reaches a torch and explodes :P don't sorry my players are definitely not low level

These are fun encounters! Rust monsters are great. I ran them with a classic porticullis trap that splits the party: my dwarf warrior with his brand new adamantine plate and two roaches was sweating bullets while the party tried to figure out how to open the gates

You could just modify Monster Stats and abilities on the fly. I made a Gem Stalker become immune to all forms of magic and it only can be harmed by physical attacks such as melee and Long ranged weapons.
    Gives more imagination and unpredictability

    • @BasicLiches
      @BasicLiches  Год назад +2

Very True. Being unpredictable as a Dungeon Master helps keep each session exciting!

@@BasicLiches it adds more variety and ultimately, gives the DM more imagination to use since the entire premise of playing dnd is using your imagination. This is why I love my style of imagination. I tend to just be a crafty DM, I do not actually over prep, I just make it up on the fly and because of my experience with many video games, reading and watching a lot of media, I have this certain adaptability to spice things up like the flick of a switch
