3 Best Spear Fighter Character Builds for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons
This video is all about the different kind of warrior character builds we can make using a spear as the main weapon. We look at feats, fighting styles, and classes mainly for these character builds. We draw both from the Unearthed Arcana articles on the wizards of he coast site, the Sword Coast Adventures Guide, and the Players Handbook. All 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons resources. The classes we looked at were mainly fighter, ranger, and paladin for fighting styles. The barbarian lacks these so we skipped him. Though in hindsight I feel we could of played with some monk levels.

Right. Spears and other polearms were the main weapon in combat. Swords were sidearms. It's the equivalent or everyone fighting in a war with pistols and revolvers instead of rifles and nerfing rifles to be worse than a revolver.

I like this a lot. It was completely missed in the conversation. You can also bond a second weapon, as a side note. Keeping a shield on hand, you can use the spear to throw (especially +X or magic)...BOOM...right back in your hand (as a bonus action), ready for the next turn. Oh, you are getting bumrushed, brandish the shield and spear...they are closing in on you, call your secondary (sword, whatever...perhaps taking the dual-wielding feat). So, in effect, you are very effective at: long range, cavalry deterrent/distance fighter, and duel-wielding crazy-person at close range. I like the shit out of this.

I'm toying with this for my next character. Monk, but with 3 levels of Fighter for Eldritch Knight. Get yourself the action surge, second wind, dueling for +2 damage, a couple handy cantrips & spells, and you can retrieve your spear after throwing. Only thing I'm concerned about is bonus action economy... so many good things a Monk can do with them, having to pull your spear back to you will be expensive. Good thing they're fast... using a spell slot for Longstrider should mean you can cross just about any battlefield. Although with a 3 level dip into Fighter your monk damage increase won't happen until level 7. :/ Benefits of the Fighter levels are hard to argue against, though.

I've fiddled a little with a spear mastery + shield master barbarian so I can have that buff to unarmored AC and pseudo-Evasion while still having a respectable melee presence. It's a little MAD with needing STR for damage with DEX+CON for AC with the limited stat boost/feat options the barbarian has compared to a fighter as well as honestly being pretty sick of needing Variant Human for just about every non-CHA build to reach full potential.

Monk is the closest you can get to Oberyn because it's the only class that let's you use spears as a dex-based weapon which Oberyn clearly does. But he clearly doesn't have the wisdom for it. A Dex-based Battlemaster would fit his fighting-style better if you reflavour a rapier as a spear.

What about using a spear two handed BUT also taking two weapon fighting so that your DM will allow you to throw javelins from a sheath on your back at any enemy beyond spear range, or who you've kept at bay using any of the other apear/polearm feats? That would be cool. I feel like only being able to do piercing damage may come back to haunt you at some point but that's just part of the fun.

  • @mikegould6590
    @mikegould6590 7 лет назад +32

Prince Oberon's weapon wasn't a spear. It was a Partisan. That's a heavier pole weapon that not only thrusts (Piercing damage), but can also cut (Slashing damage). It's an important distinction. I believe the Saxon's also had what was called a "leaf spear" which could do the same thing. The picture you have as the link for this video shows a combination of a Partisan (blade) with Winged Spear (the points below the blade), and an extremely short shaft. The diameter of the shaft is also important in determining the weapon, as a slashing pole weapon like a Partisan requires a thicker shaft - otherwise it will shatter upon impact.
Citing "Schologladitoria" for all of those distinctions, BTW, and he actually does a breakdown of the fight between The Viper and The Mountain. It's an interesting take.
As far as "Spear Fighter", I would go with a Human variant, take Ranger, and make it a Strength-based Hunter. Instead of a Spear, his melee weapon would be a Partisan (use Glaive, and change Piercing damage to Slashing). Carry Javelins for Ranged combat. (Strength can apply to that - page 13 PHB) Fighting Style would be Two-hander to re-roll ones (which is sub-optimal given the d10, I know that), and the opening Feat would be Great Weapon Master. Adding, by third level, Colossus Slayer and Hunter's Mark, you'd have 1d10+1d6+1d8+13, assuming a 16 Strength. That's brutal.
If you took Sentinel at 4th, then that damage might apply as a REACTION too.
That means at 5th, you'd have:
    Attack #1 - 1d10+1d6+13
    Attack #2 - (creature is wounded) 1d10+1d6+1d8+13
(if the creature dies)Bonus Action: 1d10+13 to secondary target
(if the creature does not die but tries to flee)REACTION: 1d10+1d6+1d8+13.
Crippling if you land all of them.

I personally would go for a fighter 12 (battle master) / monk 8 (way of the open hand) so you have 6 ASI's and 3 attacks which along with flurry of blows and action surge can give you 8 attacks, not to mention the added control you get from the open hand technique combined with maneuvers. Spear mastery, Sentinel and Mobile would be my go to feats for this guy.
And while it doesn't work with the spear, the tunnel fighter fighting style from UA Underdark works realy well with reach weapons because as a bonus action you can make opportunity attacks for free until the end of your next turn. Which then combo's with Sentinel and Polearm Master.

Check out this homebrew and let's make it better
    Way of the Spear
Nestled in a small valley between two large mountains live a group of monks called the Piercing Wind. Unlike most monk traditions these monks train in the art of armored defense. The armor is imbued with the knowledge of ancient pole arm masters. Anyone wearing it gains the feat Pole arm Master. They are taught the harmonious dance of the spear. Each monk demonstrates this art form on the battle field with beauty and deadly grace. “Be as the leaf and allow the wind to carry you home.” -Aldus Stormspear
Starting at 3rd level you gain proficiency in light armor and martial weapons. The light armor you choose is imbued with ancient pole masters of yore. You now gain the feat Pole arm Master.
Additionally at 3rd level you have three ki abilities.
Strike of the Wind: After you perform Step of the Wind instead of increasing your jump distance you may spend 2 ki and make a strike with your pole arm as a bonus action with your Dex modifier added to the damage roll.
Healing Wind: If an ally is poisoned or bleeding you may spend 3 ki to heal them. This counts as an action and also you gain the feat ability sentinel for one round on the target you healed.
Wind Aura: When you spend 3 ki and concentrate you surround yourself in a 10’ aura of wind. Anyone within the aura feels light as a feather and gains advantage on Dex saves. The effect ends if the monk stops concentrating or is knocked unconscious.
When you reach the 6th level you undergo the Trial of 10000 Steps. You are weighted down with heavy armor and two buckets full of heavy stones. With spear on back you must climb the tallest mountain and reach the top. Once you complete your trail you gain Steel Will: Overcoming mind and matter you now can add half your Wisdom modifier to your AC and you gain the ability to regain 2d4+Wisdom modifier ki points back. You may use the secondary ability once per short or long rest.
Upon reaching the 11th level you and your weapon become one. A ceremony is performed where you spill your own blood and ki into your weapon. The weapon is now a +1 magical weapon with the guardian aspect. The weapon whispers a warning to you giving you +2 to initiative. Your weapon can be summoned to you from anywhere on the same plane of existence.
By 17th level you are now the master of spear and wind. After using Step of the Wind you may spend 10 ki points to enable Dance of the Wind. You can choose one of three options.
    · You thrust your spear with the awesome fury of wind. All enemies within a 10’ cone in front of you must make Dexterity save or take 10d8 piercing damage and be knocked back 10’. On a successful roll they only get knocked back 5’.
    · You throw your pole arm into the air and make an unarmed strike. If the attack hits you must roll 2d8 and the pole arm explodes into that number of radiant spears raining down dealing 1d6 points of damage per spear. You must wait a long rest for your pole arm to return to normal.
    · You strike the ground with your pole arm sending a 15’ radius of shaking earth for 3 rounds. Creatures within 15’ must make a Constitution save or be knocked down prone. Each round an enemy may make another save to no longer be prone.

I think I can guess the reasoning behind the extra reach from the maneuver. By lunging forward, lowering your body, and leaning into the strike, you can move very quickly forward and then retreat just as fast. However, I don't think you'll ever gain 5ft; that number is just a standard value for the size of a space on the grid (which is also simplification for "the area you can control" rather than "the space you occupy" as many people seem to think). Lunging like that while also thrusting with the spear held by the butt end ... yeah, that would give you a lot of reach, alright, though I wouldn't think it'd go a whole 15ft to an enemy. I'd probably have to say you can get either one or the other, but not both.

No, it utterly lacked the barbed flares of a partisan, nor was it a pike. It's a plain spear with a relatively long blade. Maybe an ox tongue (langue de boeuf), but it lacks the distinctive spine ridge, so really just a spear stylized for TV.

If you go 1 level of monk, then you can use Dex with your spear and we all know Dex is the 5e God stat. I'd probably go Fighter - Battle-master with the rest. Now if you took mobility, you might be able to back off and force your opponent to keep coming at you to take that additional charging damage from the Spear Mastery feat. Of course, you'd need enough room to maneuver.

  • @ethanwalker955

Spears are all good. However a glaive with polearm master and sentinel does a hell of a lot of work. Best part is if an enemy only has a 5ft melee range and no range options, you can keep them at bay using the attack of opportunity from polearm master, and make their movement speed become 0 for the rest of that turn. Essentially giving you a free, no risk attack on each of your enemies turns.

I think with Fighter, there are a couple of cool options (though I'm not sure when this was released compared to *new* content) that might not have been explored. I think an Eldritch Knight would be a pretty cool build to go with this as well. At level 3, you get Weapon Bond and cannot be disarmed of your weapon, but you can also use your Bonus Action to summon your weapon to your hand. That means you could attack in melee with it, turn around and throw the spear and then summon it back to your hand with a bonus action (I am not sure of you can do the reverse order though; Throw, BA: Summon, Attack in melee). This gives you access to some defensive spells as well like Shield and Absorb Elements at 3rd level, as well as Booming/Green Flame Blade cantrips to up your damage output in melee. Even if you don't have high Int for your saves, it can be back breaking and make you harder to kill. War Magic allows you to cast a cantrip and also attack, giving you some more flexibility. If you invest more heavily into Int, you could go with spells with saves and make them have disadvantage on the save. I considered multiclassing 2 levels into War Mage from Wizard to add Int to your initiative, having access to ritual spell casting and not limiting yourself to offense and defense spells. So you pick up a couple of the rituals you need for adventuring, a few more cantrips for more utility and you are all set!
I don't think you guys explored Monk as an option. Sure, you don't get Fighting Style(s), I think the problem you run into is being Str or Dex based. As a Fighter, you can just wear heavy armor and go with that so you can use Str, but then you suffer from lower Initiative (which may or may not be good). As well, if you throw your spear and don't have another one (or a way to get another), then you are left unarmed. With a Monk build, you can use Dex in place of Str for melee and throwing. If you throw your spear and don't have another one, you at least have your Martial Arts. Unarmored Defense also gives you some defense without needing armor. Way of the Kensei lets you chose weapons that you want to get a bonus. So if your DM lets you, hypothetically you could choose spear for both. In melee, if you hit someone with your unarmed strike, you at +2 to your AC. Kensei shot allows you to add a D4 to your damage. At 6th level they become magical and you can give it more damage with your martial art die, and even more at 11th. Not ideal, but an alternative to what was mentioned :3

I came across an interesting video that demonstrates that extended range of the spear you were talking about roughly at 13 minutes in your video Nerdarchy. ruclips.net/video/kP-0wZsLYRI/видео.html The man is standing about 12 feet away and able to deliver a killing thrust to someone's head in a single smooth motion. The additional 3 feet to get to 15 doesn't seem like much of a leap in D&D's magical world. It is certainly possible for regular humans to hit from that far, the only trouble would be with control of your spear at that extended range, which is where the Mastery ability come into effect, and why most normal people would not be able to perform such feats so easily.

I started playing when I was about 10 with the tail end of 2nd edition, played a lot of 3rd(though not nearly as much as I had wanted to). 4th was really off-putting to me, but for some reason 5th has regained my interest. I do wish that feat had improved and became an actual feat.
but.. now in 2020? Alchemsit ARtificer. I really want to use Spell Slinger to get Green Flame Blade, and 10ft on it. Then add Alchemical Savant Damage.+ spear wielder's feat.
10ft Alchemically infused spear with green flame blade, and extra damage.
Though that does require the GM to read the spellfocuses the same way I do. That I could use alchemical tools as a focus for GFB because artificer lets me use tools as focuses in general. Some might not. Still doesnt' seem that unusual an ask
So then I get friebolt at 240ft. Spear at 10ft (via bonus action). Get a gbonus action use.. since alchemists don't really.

Take a Monk dip so you can use dex for simple weapons.
Isn't reach the primary benefit of spears.
The feat should just increase reach without a bonus action.
I understand they had to remove reach from spear for mechanical reasons.
    Versatility
    Range
    Polearm Mastery
    Simple Weapon
Can you really add reach and not have it outshine martial weapons without a feat?
But if you take the feat, then give it the reach.
Sentinel won't really work the way you think because the reach is only during your turn. It really ought to just have reach without a bonus action.

So aside from the obvious spearmaster polar Master Battle Master combo. I've had a lot of success with my Eldritch knight, combining shieldmaster, sentinel, warcaster in polar master. I get that you don't get to make unlimited opportunity attacks but you can swap them for cantrips which make them way more powerful. You get the added benefit of eldrich strike which can set someone up if you're getting to go next after they trigger opportunity. It also sets them up to be knocked down and skip a turn because you can knock them down with the shieldmaster ability after sentinel reduces their speed to zero. You can do the same thing with the longsword too just instead of taking polarmaster you take slasher and then a combination of your slashing attack eldred strike on the first hit sets them up to get slowed down by frostbite and then if you knock them down there at minus 20 speed and like 90% of the monster manual can't stand up. Either way can be really really good and usually results in more damage output than cavalier, because usually monsters don't run in Mass up to them.

Question on exotic spears/polearms. Yari is basically a spear, but there are japanese, chinese, indian weapons that are equivalents to simple and martial weapons. If you day your background is from another land, one that uses simple and exotic instead of martial you'd have to adjust classes accordingly, and I can see other situations where this will effect gameplay.

I only saw a reference to this in a reply not a direct post so here is my suggestion. First glaive just rp it as a longspear unless you get that dm that allows the middle earth to work in its place. Battle master fighter with a two lvl dip into Ranger revised humanoid favored enemy tunnel master fighting style and polearm master + Sentinel. You only ever bonus action your defensive stance however you this will give you infinite AoO with a reach weapon evertime someine moves more than 5ft in your reach, moves into your reach, or tries to leave it even if they disengage. If you hit their speed is 0 for the rest of the round. If you say...... Trip them. Unless they are a monk then you get a free AoO with advantage when they try to stand up since its at least 10ft of movement for small and 15 for medium. There are no rules i have found for inturrupting a standing action but i assume if your speed is reduced to 0 you fall back down.

For Oberyn I would use a cleric with the trickery domain (for the poison divine strike, and abilities that suit his character). I would use amulet as the holy symbol and use the spear with either one or two-hands depending on the circumstances. Mobile would be a good feat.
Charger might be interesting. Maybe magic initiate for the booming blade.
And the standard ones that are good for those on the front line: Sentinel and Tough.
Resilient (constitution) is never bad for a cleric on the frontline.
