Factory fog light install on 5th Gen GM trucks with factory switch

- This is the installation of the OEM fog light install on a 2020 GMC Sierra. Instructions for installing on a Silverado will be nearly the same. Installation instructions do not come with the kit but you can find instructions on the web. They're not very descriptive on how to get the job done but hopefully with this video and the instructions, you'll be able to get the task completed in relatively short order!

"Not sure why a vehicle this expensive doesn't already come with fog lights" jajajaja felt that
Been looking for a video like this. Thanks!
Have fun!
Got mine done yesterday. A major part not shown was disassembling the front plastic part that holds the lights. I had to take off the
Black fender trim too and nothing comes apart easy. I was afraid of breaking all the cheap plastic and almost gave up. I would not recommend
This install to someone with little patience. It’s a long and frustrating process and parts can be easily damaged. My truck is brand new
this made me a little nervous. One tip when reinstalling the black fender trim is it push a small socket against the back of the trim push
buttons and they pop right out.
Im planning on doing this installation, but did you get the one with the TASK or without the TASK. I dont know what the difference is. If you could help or remember (it ben a long time)
Basically, it's if you have lights in your mirrors or not. There will be a button inside the lower half of the light knob.
How much did the dealership charge you to flash the BCM?
It's been a while but it seems like they charged me for an hour's worth of labor.
Hi Phil, I have the same vehicle 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab 5:00 Base Truck. Would you be able to provide part number for all parts for me to place an order for these exact parts and update my truck? Pls advise. Thank you, Richard
Hey Richard! Not sure if the HD is different or not. Here is the part number I used for the 1500:

You could also try Gen5. I haven't used them but I hear they have lots that don't require programming the computer.

Happy holidays! I believe the green light emblem on you display are indicating your automatic lights. The fogs should match with the embem on the switch and light up somewhere else (next to the 40 on the speedometer), right? My fog light button makes that green auto light icon turn on and off too, but I have not got mine flashed yet.
Any luck with your dealer getting your fog indicator in the cluster to light up?
@@jasonsewell415 forgot to come back to you on this. Yes, I went back to the dealer. They wanted to charge me again but I said they didn't program it correctly the first time. When GM got back to them with the correct programming, they agreed that it was their fault and covered it as I suggested. The fog light is in the other cluster and does match the switch. Thanks again for pointing that out! 👍
Nice job, so how long would it take the average guy to install this?
I did it in a day but I was filming and didn't have anybody showing me how to do it!

Hey Phil. Thanks for the video. I've done most of this process but am having issues getting pin into BCM, finding grommet to run wire through and figuring how go get other pin up into ECM. Any help would be appreciated
Phil, Great video. What did you do with the wire that was already installed in the fuse box that you removed? What was it for? I have the same situation.
Hey John! If you're talking about the one under the hood, I covered the end with electrical tape and zip tied to the loom.
As to what it's used for, you'd have to ask GM.
When I installed mineI just dropped the waffle baffles and was able to access fog light covers easy without removing anything else. Just to be clear mine was on a 2021 GMC Canyon. Might be worth a try on the Serria too literally took me 15 mins a side. I also bought a harness from gen5diy and then they come on automatically and no dealer flash needed no switch to install. They come on when headlights do. They over more harnesses that allow over ride high beams and able to turn on without headlights on. My covers were a bitch to get off lol. The factory button does look clean don’t get me wrong. Nice install video.
I’m looking at Gen5 and I want to buy their harness. I also want to wire it to the oem switch. Did you just use the switch that it came with? Or wired it to look oem?
@@gohangan the gen5 harness is automatic. It comes with no switch and you don’t wire it to a switch or to the oem switch. Plug and play and run power to battery terminal.
Great work.....how did you know to leave the Existing wire in at the bcm and also how did you know to remove the wire in the hood and put your new one in at the fuse box
Go here. These are the instructions GM gives. Scroll till you see the Word document.

Nice video. How long did it take? I was thinking of samething but might just add light bar instead 🤔
Thanks! The hardware install was about 2 hours. The wiring was substantially longer but if you're doing a light bar with a switch it shouldn't take much longer than a couple hours total.
Hey Phil, I got lost on the wiring. So the brown cable that comes with the kit is supposed to be inserted in the pcm under the hood & run it to the pcm on the drivers side?
That's correct IF there isn't a wire that's already in that position on the BCM (driver's side).
Hey Phil, does this kit work for the 2019 sierra SLE also? I'm looking to add the fog lights. Also do I have to get the BCM flashed by the dealership? Thanks
Yes it will work on the 19 and you will have to get the BCM flashed.
@@phil_hazzy Hey Phil, do you know by chance of anyone who can flash the BCM in the Atlanta metro area? I'm having a hard time finding someone to flash it.
@@decatur9473 any GMC or Chevy dealer should be glad to do it. It's easy money for them!
@@phil_hazzy How much did the dealership charge to flash the BCM?
@@fyrfyter55 it's been a while but I think it was less than $200
Phil: I looked at your Shop Chevy Parts link. They had 2 kits, 1 with and 1 without task lighting. This leads me to a couple of questions.
1. What is task lighting and how do I know if my 2020 GMC Sierra SLE has it?
2. Both kits at the parts website look different than mine and what is shown here in your video. My truck matches yours in this video. Can you tell me the part # of the kit you used in this video? I'd like to order the same kit you have from my dealer and have them install it. I'm not certain that the kit part # on the website is the correct one.
Thank you.
1. Task lighting is the lights on the back of your mirrors. There's a button by your headlight switch to turn them on and that's how you know. The kit then accommodates these lights in the new switch. If you click into the product description it will have a picture of your switch so you can verify which one you have.
2. I bought 84822219 because I have task lighting. My model has a slightly different bumper so there's no chrome surround around the fog light area but the actual lights are the same.
Let me know if you have other questions!
@@phil_hazzy Thank you for your reply and information.
1. I do not have Task Lighting on my truck as of today. That being said, I'm having the OEM GMC camper mirrors installed on it this Tuesday. So those should have the task lighting on them. I'm also having the engine block heater installed at the same time.
2. That's what confused me about the Shop Chevy Parts link, "there's no chrome surround around the fog light area," and the surround shape is different too. My truck also does not have that chrome surround just like yours does not. The front of my truck looks exactly like yours does. Now I know what part # I need for the fog lamps. Those will be the next addition to my truck. Then comes the topper/camper shell for the box next Spring
Thanks again for your time, information, and kindness. You've been more than helpful.
Have the same truck. How did you get the blank inserts out? The clips don’t seem to release.
Damn, that's a lot of work.
It's not like the good old days...
@Phil Hasenoehrl do your fog lights come on automatically when the headlights come on, or do you have to turn them on?
@@coryfields482 only when the button is pushed has been my experience. Even on my new truck that had the lights installed from the factory. They only come on after the button is pushed each time the truck is started.
Did you disconnect the battery?
I am pretty sure that I did due to all the work in the fuse box underhood. I would suggest that you do.
Where you get that kit send a link please

That's not something the average guy will undertake. It's too bad. Just found out the price to change the brakes on my 2020 Sierra is 1600$+ and Joe blow literally can't do the job himself, you need a special computer program for this. Putting the truck up for sale and getting an old one. I refuse to play along anymore.
Hey Phil so I have the same set up that you have but instead I have a small red button that I can turn them on and off is it possible if I buy the harness alone to just connect the wire from my button to the harness?
Go to gen5diy.com to get a harness. It'll be less expensive and you won't have to tie it in to the ECM!
I’m being told by 3 local GM dealerships that there is no factory kit for my 2020 base model GMC 2500hd. This seems very strange. Have you found this to be true? Thanks.
Hey Quincy! I did some digging on the HD's. Apparently they do not install the same wiring harness as they do in the 1500's. That's why the factory doesn't have a kit. But fear not! There is a way to get them. A company called gen5diy makes a harness. They have a good reputation too. Here's a link to their harness:

Give them a call and they'll be able to hook you up!
im having problem try connect on fuse box i already got everything done just missing connect fuse box and other wire tha run inside
where did you pass the wire to go to the cabin?
There is a small grommet on the passenger side behind the battery. If you watch my video with the sub installation, I show it there. You'll need to cut the end of the grommet to pass the wire through and it'll come into the cabin behind the glove box.
Hey Phil thanks for the vid...I have same truck 2020 turbo diesel...I ran all the hardware I just did not connect the hardness to to box inside next to battery I couldn't open it had a hard time with it...does it need to connect?on the bcm i do have a connector there already
Unfortunately you do have to still open the box to connect the harness for the new fog lights. You still have to have the BCM flashed so you could run the wires to the box and have the dealership put that last wire in. I almost did it but then got some sleep and went back at it again with some determination! It wasn't easy.
@@phil_hazzy alright thanks phil...! I just had a hard time trying to get it open i think I'll take to dealer have them flash it and install last wires I just don't wana damage something in there but thanks for the vid really help me out...👍

Mine came with the rubber floor mats. They're nice but I went with Weathertech for better coverage.
Great video but at this point i would of look for a truck with foglights already ,save the time an i think youll pay a lil more if you get it with foglights already an a better trim level

I have backed out each of the 4 bolts on top and then moved the clips on the side but I can not get the top that contains the fuses to separate from the bottom where you plug the wire in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the Full Stock install video.
Make sure the 4 bolts are completely loose or removed from the top. If you've gotten the clips separated on the sides, then it should pull up. The only thing holding it down are those 4 bolts. You can see where the bolts attach into the lower portion in the video at 6:23. Word of advice, when you get to this point, there's not much slack in the harness to work with so be prepared.
