This has to be one of the most informative, clear and easily explained videos there can be. From camera quality to the angles of the camera to clear audio and diagrams! All around very well done!
@@kevefox could you post/send me the pics of plugs and all pics you inclided in this vid please i have a 14 silverado i want to change the switch out instead of drilling a hole in my truck i found your video u dis an AMAZING job explaning thanks if you need to find me on FB my the name on here thanks again
@@joncunningham7672 I have a 14 Sierra, correct me if I'm wrong but you don't have the offroad cluster icon, so you may not have to run to the bcm, but rather use it like switch to initiate a light bar(or whatever). Use a relay and fuse power from elsewhere
I know im asking randomly but does anyone know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the login password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
Thank you! I too get really tired of hearing about the weather, the pet chicken and everything else that has nothing to do with why I clicked on the video in the first place!
Jeez....you could open you own business doing this. I'm seriously impressed by your process. I've been looking to do exactly this on my 2015 Sierra 1500, so I've looked at a few dozen videos. Yours is the best. Well done. I hope you make more.
Thank you! This won’t work on a ‘15 as the BCM doesn’t have the programming. Here is a retrofit..... 2014-2015 GM Truck OEM Off-Road Light Switch Retrofit ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html
Please stop. Between you and Phil I can't stop. I mean, unless you have a way to wire the factory trailer brake in... I'm pretty sure it's impossible on a truck that's not equipped. in all seriousness, thank you for what you do!
Dude that little rubber boot for wire to be fished through was such a pain in the ass when I was doing my baja led lights. I wish I knew about this OEM offroad light switch be for I did them though!
What an incredibly informative video. Unfortunately I have the motor-skills and wiring patience of a brain dead elephant, and will do an absolute hack job on my 2017 Silverado, but this was nice to imagine to do!
What did you say had to be done if we wanted to keep the light bar stay on with the high beams on? I have a 2019 GMC Sierra 2500hd Denali diesel. Great video and will make my life so much easier with this professional install. You’re the best. Thanks.
Awesome video. I’m glad I came across this, I’m looking to add a LED bar behind my grill (18 Silverado 1500 w/ Active grill shutters 😤), and now that I know I can buy the OEM switch, I’m definitely going to do it, I’ll let you know how it goes!
robertedgemont I’m thinking about taking the bottom two shutters out, moving the motor up one notch, and getting a single tow LED bar that puts out some good intensity. I have an all black 1500 so I’m looking at the rigid midnight edition LED bar so you can’t see it past the grill, or one by Baja Designs
I fitted the RC bar and bracket with active shutters. Take a look here: www.silveradosierra.com/exterior/grill-light-bar-with-active-shutters-t708271.html
Great video. But the grommet and getting through the firewall really threw me for a loop! It seemed my truck (2017 GMC Sierra 1500) had a sweet stop to get from one side to the other I ended up loosening up the box on the interior to get at it. But, other than that everything was spot on. Thanks for doing this video!
doing my 2017 right now, came to the comments to find a tip on how to get past the firewall. Now I need to go back out and remove the box to get everything done thenks.
@tinkering Fox This is for the next chain that will likely continue on a few months. It's great to know there are options for a truck that basically came standard stock with out a lot of features! I'm a low voltage tech, so I understand a thing or two, but I've never built a harness and don't like splicing wires. (And a mechanic. I tear all my engines down.. currently working on the Oil Pump on this 2014.... the front diff is being a bit difficult though.) But, at least this should serve to state that I should be able to comprehend everything you instruct me to do.
william vaughn sounds good 👍🏻 the main reason for my camera upgrade is to display trailer TPMS on the radio display. I figured the front camera will help for parking and the third brake light for fifth wheel hookup. The mirror ones are just a gimmick but why not.
@@kevefox Yes yes yes! And I saw that Alpine does all of that. But it's SOOOOO Costly!!! So, I'm working with a local audio/tech company called Waxwerks here in Indiana to try and set me up with a nice in-dash that has all the options so I can add on little by little as my budget and time allows.
If you’re looking to upgrade the screen size OEM isn’t too bad. As far as adding video I bought this one.... www.adcmobile.com/product/multi-camera-interface-for-chevrolet-vehicles/
Incredible video! Thank you so much for the great information! If I could ask one question - can the switch turn the ambers on at any time? Or does the vehicle need the keys in/on position? Reason I ask is I plan to use this set up to wire in some construction amber strobes to my '18 Sierra SLE Elevation and need the strobes to stay on when I'm out of the vehicle. Thanks again!
Hey, thanks for getting back to me, that’s very cool of you. I have watched your video probably half a dozen times, it’s great. What I’m trying to figure out when I watch it is. I’m trying to add a Light bar also. I have the light switch with the dual buttons on the bottom. In your video, you hooked up your light bar to the button on the bottom right, I’m trying to use the button on the bottom left. My Oem sport bar lights are hooked up to the bottom right button. What do I do differently to use the fog light (left) button for the light bar?
Just subscribed to your channel bro I like the way you explain and take your time and do the job right the first time...well done my friend I’m Kevin Out Of Laredo Texas!!!
Thanks Kevin! I’m going to shoot a video on this on my ‘17 but instead of driving an off road light, I’ll hook up rear fogs. And I’ll accomplish this without changing out the headlight switch.....stay tuned and thanks for watching!
Im assuming this switch would still work if you dont have factory fog lights on 2016 1500 WT? I definitely want to do this and eliminate the dinky stick on switch that came with my pods. I also wonder if I could just use existing wiring that I ran into the cab for the pods?
Awesome video. I just installed a Rough Country 30" curved single row light bar on my 2016 Silverado 1500 behind the grill. I wish I had seen this video before I did it. Really like this set up way better than using the switch that came with light bar. I already have everything ran and set up with their supplied parts but I want to do it this way. Will you be willing to make and sell me a harness to hook up oem switch for 2016 Silverado 1500. I really dont want to buy the crimping tool, terminals, and wire for a one time use.
Excellent video. Is there additional wire that needs to be hooked up to run both aftermarket fogs and ORL? I have a '18 GMC 2500HD that did not have fogs from the factory. I have purchased a light switch, lights, and the described harness from Harness Dr. I have not attempted the install yet as I am still deployed. I am just doing research to have everything ordered before I get home. Thank you, sir!
Awesome video. "Almost" exactly what I've been looking for. You're obviously well educated in DC power. I'm adding LED fog lights to my 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2. This model came without fog lights from the factory so there's no fog light option on my light switch. My low beams also stay on when my high beams come on. Would you know if there's a way to wire with the OEM light switch with dual auxiliary buttons.
Yes, there are a couple ways...with a latching relay: ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html Or with programming and then adding some wiring...www.whiteautoandmedia.com/product/2015-2018-canyon-colorado-wams-spec-bcm-programming-autosync/ www.gmupfitter.com/pages/body-builder-manuals
@robertedgemont I was thinking about that last night actually. There was a vehicle approaching that would not be in their highbeams so I try to hit them with my lightbar but only ended up turning off my fog lights. I was thinking that the reason it is a long process so that you don’t make that mistake and accidentally dial somebody when you’re trying to just turn on your fog lights
Great video!! thank you. does the switch latch to the high beam on a 2018 sierra? I work in the bush and have my light bar wired in my high beam trigger right now. With the switch on, the light bar will only come on with the HB, switch off, no light bar. I want to keep the same set up but would love to use this OEM switch. I refuse to drill holes in my dash, so my light bar switch just sits loose in my cup holder...
The only thing that this switch does is creates a positive output signal. On my wife’s truck I did what you want trying to do. With the OEM switch on the highbeams will activate the off-road light relay. If the switch is not on the highbeams will not activate the off-road light relay. I’m going to do a video and Install sometime soon for a local in my area where I will do exactly what you were talking about. The highbeam signal is negative so it will work on terminal 86 of the relay and your positive signal can go to terminal 85 of the relay for the off-road lights. The only downfall is that some lower quality relays will backfeed and illuminate the off-road light icon on the switch itself so a diode in line is preferred
@@kevefox Any updated videos or pictures on this topic. I tried looking at your videos, but couldn't find anything. I am trying to do the same thing. make the light bar latch to the high beams. I also will be utilizing the same fog/off road switch that's in this video.
It would be nice if you responded to me ASAP with this question would this be the same with a 2020 Chevy Colorado z71 because I am buying this switch for my truck and watched your video to see if the same steps would apply. Thankyou
It is a different connector for the other style. I pulled that right off of the still frame pics of the directions in the video. I’m not sure what document number the directions are at this point. They were for a Colorado/Canyon but are identical for Sierra/Silverado. I haven’t seen any that use ones different from the video.
This is an amazing video. Couple of questions if you don't mind. I recently bought a rebuilt 16 2500HD Silverado that came factory without fog lights but when they replaced the front bumper they added them at my request. I can't find a harness online that hooks into the lights and I am wondering if there are already plugs in the truck somewhere for them? After seeing this video I looked up this switch but couldn't find it for a Silverado in any trim level. Did they make this switch for the Silverado? Where did you find all the X port information to know which wire to add where? Thanks. I'm gonna have to check out this channel. Again, great work on the video.
First off great video. I do have a question I have a gmc sierra sle 2016 and I want the ability to turn on the fog lights with the drl lights. I currently have the same headlight switch that you replaced with the new one. So would i f ollow these same step buying a new head light switch and add the two wires you did without the jumper wire for under the hood? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Great video. Oddly enough I was looking at doing something similar to my 2014 sierra(gas) but wiring for smoked roof lights+side step markers(I've blacked out the Denali grill with some black housing stock looking headlights; so it'd look sick!) I know I don't have the cluster icon so I wont bother running to the bcm, but do you think that i should be able to get ignition power off the existing switch connector, and use that offroad switch second button to initiate the markers/roof(wouldn't require a hold?)? Also I like what you did with the amber light bar, might run a separate branch circuit and copy that! And fyi, I have seen some of your other videos and like what you're doing, the ignition relay video(and the garage door opener programming, lol) was well informing and plan to do a similar thing to run an air compressor, air horn and other goodies! I'll keep following.
Thanks, this video isn’t finished or published yet but it should help you out with the ‘14 and lack of programming...... ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html
Awesome video! Just like everyone said, this is a professional install and really appreciate the walkthrough. I’ve got a 2015 High Country and ordered the harness through Phil, but my RC light bar has a high and low beam on the toggle switch and two relays. The toggle has red, white, and blue wires. Together the red, blue, and trigger wire turn on the high setting, the red, white, and trigger turn on the low. Also, the amber light on the OEM off-road switch does light up, but pushing it and holding for 3 secs doesn’t control the light bar. I just want the high beam to run on this light bar when I push the off-road lights, but I’m stuck. Any thoughts?
Hi there. Thank you. Your 2015 won’t have the programming for this mod. Only 2016 and later. Here’s a workaround for ya! ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html Also there are three wires going into the RC light bar, one is ground, one is light bar power and one is DRL power. Wire both power wires together. The high beam signal at the BCM can be tapped into and used as the negative side of your relay trigger (86) and the signal from your latching relay (positive) can be used as the positive trigger (85). The first few minutes of this video will give you a solid foundation on how the relay for your ORL works…..ruclips.net/video/MvvXGCbA5YM/видео.html
@@kevefox Thanks so much! I found your workaround video last night and it is so well done. The only other question I have now is related to the two combined relays with this light bar. Three wires from the toggle switch enter one relay, and wires to the light bar exit the other relay. Assuming I leave them together and just focus on the toggle switch wires, combining the power wires like you suggested and connecting to the trigger wire, once I have the BCM workaround setup fixed. My back up is connecting them to an 8 gang panel I have, but really want this OEM off-road switch to work lol
Can you tell me which of the two white plugs in the BCM you tapped into? I have a 2016 Silverado 1500 - have the switch the wire harness, but trying to get the hook up to work. I have two white plugs in the BCM: one right next to the brown plug (which already has OEM wire in slot #12) and another on the end of the BCM, closest to the brake pedal (and slot #12 is open on this one). Just trying to verify for sure which plug I need to try and tap into.
Great video! Do you know for sure the switch date for the background color on the switch? You note that you have a red background for your '16, but I have a '16 LT and it actually has blue background/surround on the switches there.
Is there a similar process that can be used to add fog lights to a truck that didn’t come with them? (2018 Chevy WT). Would be nice to be able to use a factory switch, and have light in dash light up.
You can add factory fogs but your BCM will need to be programmed and you’ll need to add some factory wiring. Good news is you can program your BCM at home.....www.whiteautoandmedia.com/product-category/autosync/
@@kevefox Unfortunately, I've been trying to give my money to WAMS for a while now; but no luck. Their AutoSync doesn't work with the IOB radio, which is what I have in my truck. They used to do the physical programming that included flashing the BCM for fog lights; but they don't do that anymore. I bought a WT. Guess I should learn to live with a WT.
Hi TF, im a soldier/tinkerer also, love the videos , could you please tell me where to buy that mini torch you were using for the shrink rap?? TY in advance
Is this the same hook up on the 2016 Chevy Silverado 5.3L do you have the wire diagram or is it the same as your video I have the same switch now and the wire harness .
Question, I have a light bar with Day Time Running Lights (DRL). I’d like for the light bar Day Time Running lights to come on with the fog lights. How best would I connect without sacrificing too much of the “factory” wiring? I’ve already installed the OEM off-road light switch and cabling but didn’t consider the possibility of DRL at the time. Please help!
What if... we have the All Terrain X, that already came with the sports bar, but no lights from factory? I already bought the switch, what about the wiring? Would I have to wire from the switch, to the bcm, through the boot?
@tinkering fox, finally a video on some circuit mods. I'm in need of some help though as I'm rather new to the electrical world. I just did a new bumper install on my 18 silverado 1500 which removed the fog lights essentially. However, the hookup from the lights is still there just not being used now. I want to hook up some offroad LEDs (one bar and 4 cubes) but want to keep the factory look on the inside so am curious if I can hook the lights into the fog light's existing wiring and have the interior switch work inside. I worry about the overall draw on the existing set-up or if this will blow a fuse or something along those lines. Any advice on how to set it up without having to install new switches on the dash?
Dave Warriner thanks! ‘16+Up should be programmed for this. You have a few easy options. This is a cheap option for your dash. This is a GM part but the indicator light on the button won’t light up but other than that it’s perfect and $100 less than the one currently on sale through GM. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F263473206828 I wouldn’t hook up more than two cubes in place of your fogs without using a relay. Also your fogs turn off when your high beams are on, here’s the fix for that..... www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/162734-foglights-on-with-high-beams/ Next do you have harnesses for your lights? Meaning did they come with relays and such? Third there is a slick way to make your led bar/cubes come on with your high beams but only when the headlight switch is in the “on” position not “auto”. I’m going to do a write-up/video on this really soon on my ‘17 2500. I’m ordering the bar/mount tonight. The output from the BCM for off road lights is positive but only strong enough to trigger a relay.
@@kevefox yes three harnesses one per pair of cubes and one with the bar. The switch currently installed already has fog light option, which isn't being used at the moment, is the upgraded switch necessary or can I tie into the one I already have. That's what I thought about the relays so could I some how strip the three switches that come with the harnesses and splice them into the factory installed fog light switch?
Yes, absolutely. That will work. These work really well for cutting through fog. You could run these wired to the fogs and the others off of the ORL switch. www.quadratec.com/products/97025_04X0_PG.htm They’re Amber
I have an ‘18 diesel Colorado and my OEM switch doesn’t have the light ring around it, nor does my dash have the additional orange light indicator left to the green fog light indicator. Is it safe to assume I could just bypass the BCM connection and just wire the additional switch to the relay for on/off?
Why do I get the feeling you're a GM technician LOL great video I've got a Colorado I'm trying to wire up the sports bar without having the OEM harness because it's obsolete without buying a $900 kit. I did manage to buy the same switch that thing was kind of hard to find.
I have a 2018 GMC sierra and I'm looking to leave my original switch in there and wire my light bar up to the fog light switch and then wire my fog lights to be on all the time like DRL I was wondering where you got the wire diagrams for the connecters on the fog light delphi connecter and the JCT to show the pin outs
Search GM Document #4573588. Any dealer can print them for you too. There is a Colorado fans page with a quality PDF of them. Another option you have is to just tap into the fog light signal coming from the switch. A momentary press of the switch will turn on the fogs while a longer press will turn on the fogs as well as the ORL. You can then quickly press the fogs again to turn them off leaving the ORL on. You just need to run a second wire from the fogs signal over to the ORL input at the BCM. The dash icon will illuminate and the constant signal will come from the ORL output from the BCM to your relay.
Where could i find wiring diagrams for a 2015 Chevy silverado to do the same thing but with the aux switches under the radio. Thank you for your time and help!!
Hey TF. Great video! I have a 2018 Denali HD Pickup and ordered the new headlight switch and the harness from the harness doctor. What a time saver. Question. How can I defeat the bloody seatbelt minder on this. Without cutting or destroying anything. Obviously I can get a buckle and just plug it in but you might have a fix? Also - I’d like to have my trailer lights available other than just park and neutral gears. Any suggestions?
Thank you! You can just unplug the seatbelt wiring under the seat. Today I towed a Duramax out of the Highway Patrol impound. I towed it in two weeks ago for the investigation of a fatal accident where it was traveling over 60 NB and was struck head-on by an F150 traveling SB at over 70. I had a ten minute conversation with the driver who was relatively uninjured. Without a doubt he would have been killed if he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Neither truck caused the wreck. A third vehicle came from a side road and pushed the F150 into the Duramax. There was zero time to react. As far as the rear facing lights go, they are disabled while in forward gear for obvious reasons. You could add a latching relay to the same circuit, bypassing the BCM. You would have to use diodes to prevent backfeeding into the BCM. ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html
Tinkering Fox don’t worry. I wear my seatbelt. But we do stuff in the ranch and towing boats all at low speeds so it causes an annoyance that’s all. On regular streets and highways the seatbelt is strapped., believe that.
TF, so I just finished the install of the new headlight switch and the harness, just as you documented. I have a 2018 Duramax truck, and low and behold the little backlight behind the overhead button works! I am having some issues though. I’m not sure I like the “press and hold” feature, unlike the fog lamps which are instant on-off. A few observations: Sometimes when I push and hold the cab (off-road) light switch, it does not activate. Also sometimes when I push it, it does not deactivate. I have the most success with on-off when I push and hold BOTH fog/cab switches at the same time. In some cases, the only way for me to turn the cab lights off is when I cycle the headlight switch to off. Bizarre! Any suggestions and again, sorry to bother. Great work you do!
@@bryanh2646 I’m going to be installing a light in a ‘16 Yukon soon. I’ll be making it a two part activation. First activate ORL, then turn on high beams. This will be my fourth install with this two part system. I’ll do my best to make another video.
Would like to try that on my 2016 but it's a base model..be my luck I'd spend all that to find BCM isn't programed. Your vid was good but I still have some questions. But I'll review a few times to muster some courage.
Sorry for the late response, really long work day....you can apply a long ground signal to the pin that goes from the Switch to the BCM using a wire inserted through the plug.
I know that you posted this video in 2018, however I’ve just spit recently. I was wondering what would you have todo differently to get your light to work with the or the button on the left of your switch as opposed to the button on the right? I have this switch but the lights on the sport bar are connected to the button on the right. I would like to do what you did and hook up a light bar using the button on the bottom left on the switch.
I’m assuming that you don’t have factory fog lights? Since the signal is momentary you’ll need to convert it to a constant signal. Here is a video showing how to install this switch when your truck doesn’t come with fogs or the programming for the ORL function....ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html. You can also add factory fogs. You’ll have to add the BCM programming though...www.whiteautoandmedia.com/ this too will require wiring.
Do you know if this would work for a 1500 or would that be a different part number if so would you know or be able to help Mel find the right part number for a 1500 for 2016 ?
nice video ......quick question do you know if there is a way to put the factory trailer brake control for a 2016 gmc 1500 all terrain ....with out haveing to go aftermarket control ....
Great video, it seems as though my 2017 GMC Sierra has this orange light on the dash with the backwards D. Im wondering if this may still work assuming I have the two empty slots in the pin connector, correct?
Some place in the comments you mentioned wiring the relay control for the light bar into the high beam signal so the switch will still work but the light will only be on with the high beams. My light bar is currently working perfectly as show in the video. To add high beam functionality do I just need to wire the negative lead of the light bar relay control to the high beam signal? If so what connector and terminal is the high beam signal wire that i need. I see in the upfitter doc you linked that it could be X3 white wire position 11 but want to make sure thats right. Also do i need a latch relay for the light bar for this or is the is the high beam signal constant? Thanks in advance
Sorry for the late response. I’ve been burning both ends at work. It is a constant signal. Let me look back at some footage I shot for the new video to get the right cavity. You’ll also need to add a diode.....yes, X3, cavity 11, white wire. You’ll need a diode on the yellow wire between the “y” and the positive relay terminal (85) to prevent backfeeding to the indicator light on the switch button.
@@kevefox so my light bar has DRL functionality and the ground/negative is wired into the relay as well. Am i okay with bypassing the relay with the light bar ground or is there a reason for that. that way the only negative i'm attaching to the high beam signal is the relay return. That seem right to you? Sorry about all the questions.
Steve Spoor sorry, missed the reply. Yes, that works. I’ve installed several Rough Country ORLs with DRL and just rewired them together on one relay, grounding the light bar to ground directly (using the fender bolt at the firewall) and not the relay ground.
The switch would work but it has the wrong color background. I believe you have a blue background in the switch. Right in the beginning of the video I show the part number for a blue background switch. That is the one you will need
@@kevefox yea mine is blue. But thank u defiantly gonna look into doing this I want to add a light bar behind the grill but I hate after market switches.
I got it forwarded to me from a friend. You can have a dealer print the install info for you at the parts dept. the still frame pics are for a Colorado/Canyon so you’re good to go.
Will this work with a 2016 Colorado. I installed a light bar in my bumper and would like to incorporate this switch to control it. Thanks in advance for reply.
This may have been covered...I didn’t read all the comments and questions. Is it the same process for any GM full-size from this era? I have a 2016 Tahoe LT with the Max Trailering package I want to add off road lights to.
I believe it will work. You can unplug your fog light signal from the switch at the BCM and plug it into the ORL circuit to test the programming just to see if the icon pops up on your dash. www.gmupfitter.com/files/media/photo/629/Escalade_Escalade_ESV_Suburban_Tahoe_Yukon_Yukon_XL_Electrical_Body_Builders_Manual_Service_Manual_2016_en_US.pdf. Page 727/728. It will take a while to load up (huge file)
@@kevefox I pulled the wire from cavity 15 on X1 and moved it to cavity 12. I still have the factory, fog only switch, I hit the fog light button, I tried a long press...nothing. I can see the icon for the other lights under the fuel gauge but it doesn't light. Did I test that correctly? What else would I need to do to get this to work?
Not sure f you will see this or not. I recently got new to me 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 HD. It did not have factory installed fog lights, but has an upgraded front bumper. My headlight switch does NOT have a icon for fog lights, nor can i push it in. Here is my question, following a method simulair to yours, can I get a new switch with the correct icon and wire the new fog lights (with a relay) to that switch? I have heard some say that while all well and good, the BCM would need to be reprogramed, but does this bypass that?
Here is a workaround for that problem… ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.htmlfeature=shared And here is a somewhat OEM solution for you as well … harnessdr.com/product/2016-2019-silverado-sierra-fog-light-harness/ I suggest sending them a message to find out if they can build you an all in one solution. Have a great day and thanks for watching.
Hey TF! Thread bump! No seriously, several years back I installed the EXACT same dual function GM switch on my ‘18 Denali HD EXACTLY as you described here (still a great video btw). The only aspect I’m not in love with, is the 2 to 3-second press and hold ON/OFF function of the “off road lights” part of that switch. The fog light button is, of course, instant ON/OFF. So my question is - is there ANY way to to wire it in such a way to acquire the instant ON/OFF function of the bottom right button of this switch?
Hi there. Yes there is. I hated that too. I used the positive output to trigger the positive side of the relay (85). I used the negative high beam signal from the BCM to the X50A as the negative trigger (86). It’s the wire that comes from your BCM and goes to the fuse block to activate high beams. You will have to first activate the ORL by long pressing the switch, and then turn on the high beams to trigger the off road light. If you pull the high beam lever (flash to pass) the ORL won’t light up so you’re not blinding oncoming traffic if you just want to remind them to dim their lights.
Sorry but for the infant electrically minded - the high beam signal you mention Brown JST X5 pin 18? And if so do I just splice into this wire and connect it to the blue trigger wire (86?) on the relay? Not sure if I’m replacing these connections or merely tapping into them.
Awesome video. Couple of quick questions - will this switch work in a 2018 Silverado Z71 1500? Will there be a separate icon visible in the dash in the Silverado? I see that there's a guy who asked about a 2018 but I want to be absolutely *sure* it will work before I order. Thanks!!!
Could this switch be used without even going into the BCM. Just using the switch as a switch to trigger a relay without going through the BCM? I'm guessing the BCM is only being used to light the indicator in the dash. Does this sound right. What is the voltage through your gray wire? 5v? or 12V? Thank You.
OK, success, I got the switch ( hard to find) and the correct harness and followed your instructions and DONE. I works with my 2017 Silverado 2LT 1500 and matches my blue background lighting of my truck. I'm not sure if you mentioned it but the off road part of the switch is a LONG PRESS, both for on and off. The orange indicator does light up on the dash and the switch when the off road lights are on. I felt the numbering on the white BCM connector was a little screwey but I carefully followed the video and everything works perfect. Thank You.
I ran into the same problem. The BCM puts out a positive signal to activate your ORL. Your high beam switch puts out a negative signal. You gab grab this signal at the BCM and use it as the negative side of your ORL relay (terminal 85 pos, and 86 negative). Don’t grab the high beam signal after the BCM because it will also activate the ORL with “flash to pass”. You will also need to isolate this signal using a diode to prevent backfeeding from the ORL relay to your BCM. I’m on the tarmac so I don’t have time to look up the position of the high beam signal right now but I will when I get a minute.
Ok got it, got to GM upfitter…..www.gmupfitter.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Sierra_Silverado_Electrical_Body_Builders_Manual_Service_Manual_2016_en_US.pdf I just pulled up electrical info for a 2016 Sierra/Silverado but it will be the same for everything. Scroll down to page 868. It’s the K9 Body Control Module, X3 connector, pin 11, white wire. Splice into that wire a couple inches before it goes into the connector and run that wire with the other signal wire out through the firewall and to the negative side of your ORL relay. Disconnect any other ground going into the relay. You do need to use a diode in this new wire between the BCM and the relay and I’ll get back with you on a part number. If you want to use an inline fuse case and an automotive diode available at most parts stores, use this…Littelfuse 02400104P 1A Mini Diode Automotive Fuse-4Pack www.amazon.com/dp/B015YSU24G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_X0Z3DGQZHDG5MKSZ7NV7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You are very welcome. You will have to first activate the ORL function and then your ORL will come on with high beams. Flash to pass will still be only high beams. This is really nice when you need to tell an oncoming vehicle to dim their lights without seeing an X-ray of their scull on their back window.
I’m curious to know if this switch could work with aftermarket fog lights and light bar. The truck didn’t come with fog lights. I have switches in the truck for both, but looking to go to an oem look. Any suggestions on how the wiring would work?? I’m thinking I need to just route a signal wire from the switch in the dash, to the relay.
cdahlman10 If your truck is 2016 and later the Offroad light button will work because the BCM should have programming. The switch puts out a momentary signal and the BCM will convert that signal to a constant positive output for triggering a relay for your lights. The fog lights however our different, if your truck did not come with them then the BCM will not latch that signal. There is a way to do that however. Email me, tinkering fox@gmail.com and I will send you a link to a video I am working on that is not public yet which will show you how it’s done.
Will this work on a 2018 Silverado W/T? I have a 2018 Silverado with push button 4wd and I would love to do this to mine as I am adding some off-road lights in the near future. Also are these trucks already pre wired for fogs? I know my fuse panel has a spot with a fuse in it but the truck does not have fog lights (yet lol).
If it doesn’t already have fog lights then this likely won’t work but here is a workaround for you….. ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.htmlfeature=shared Also look at Harness doctor for an OEM solution ….. harnessdr.com/
Hey what up man, just had a some questions, im trying to add fog light on my 2016 sierra it didnt come with fog lights, i have a oem switch with fogs light and im trying to make it work with that switch, I dont really care for the light on the cluster I just want the fog lights to work with the oem switch, will it work? How would i have to wire the lights with the switch? Would i only have to wire the fogs directly to the switch and the relay and fuse ? Thank you I would really appreciate if you could give me a hand!
Ok cool thanks man, so I would need to get a latching relay and that other connector that hooks up behind the brake pedal and wire it just like you did on the video and it should work for the fogs?
Hey great video but apparently I’m an idiot. Just got the switch completely wired. Was hoping to test the switch before beginning the work under the hood. Any reason the dash light wouldn’t turn on even after pushing and holding? Does the relay and off road light need to be fully assembled to complete the circuit? All other switch functions seem to work.
You need to have the key on and the headlights need to be “on” or be on due to low light conditions like in “auto” with the photo sensor on the dash covered. Do a long press (several seconds).

I also have the Active Grill Shutters. Please post your ideas for the mounting of the light bar.

@tinkering Fox
This is for the next chain that will likely continue on a few months.
It's great to know there are options for a truck that basically came standard stock with out a lot of features! I'm a low voltage tech, so I understand a thing or two, but I've never built a harness and don't like splicing wires. (And a mechanic. I tear all my engines down.. currently working on the Oil Pump on this 2014.... the front diff is being a bit difficult though.)
But, at least this should serve to state that I should be able to comprehend everything you instruct me to do.
william vaughn sounds good 👍🏻 the main reason for my camera upgrade is to display trailer TPMS on the radio display.

Tinkering Fox would this harness work for a 2017 Silverado? How would the harness work?
Im assuming this switch would still work if you dont have factory fog lights on 2016 1500 WT? I definitely want to do this and eliminate the dinky stick on switch that came with my pods. I also wonder if I could just use existing wiring that I ran into the cab for the pods?
Awesome job, fully detailed explanation for complete install. What is the amperage or biggest light you can put on that circuit?
Thanks. The circuit should only be used as a trigger wire to trigger or switch the relay for your off road light.
Really cool video and awesome job
Awesome video. I just installed a Rough Country 30" curved single row light bar on my 2016 Silverado 1500 behind the grill. I wish I had seen this video before I did it. Really like this set up way better than using the switch that came with light bar. I already have everything ran and set up with their supplied parts but I want to do it this way. Will you be willing to make and sell me a harness to hook up oem switch for 2016 Silverado 1500. I really dont want to buy the crimping tool, terminals, and wire for a one time use.
Actually just hit up Phil Gamboa by emailing him at gamboaphil@gmail.com. He has them ready to go.
Yes, there are a couple ways...with a latching relay: ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html
Or with programming and then adding some wiring...www.whiteautoandmedia.com/product/2015-2018-canyon-colorado-wams-spec-bcm-programming-autosync/

Thankyou
Hi there. I’m not sure. Is the 2020 the old body? If so then it should work without issue.
Great video! Are there gm directions if you have the other type of connectors? Are all 4 female connectors the same for both styles?
It is a different connector for the other style. I pulled that right off of the still frame pics of the directions in the video. I’m not sure what document number the directions are at this point. They were for a Colorado/Canyon but are identical for Sierra/Silverado. I haven’t seen any that use ones different from the video.
Dude, nicely done
Great video! So I can set this up to only trigger the light bar with high beams right?
With that off-road swift, can you have one button do the light bar and then wire up ditch lights to the other button?
Oddly enough I was looking at doing something similar to my 2014 sierra(gas) but wiring for smoked roof lights+side step markers(I've blacked out the Denali grill with some black housing stock looking headlights; so it'd look sick!)
I know I don't have the cluster icon so I wont bother running to the bcm, but do you think that i should be able to get ignition power off the existing switch connector, and use that offroad switch second button to initiate the markers/roof(wouldn't require a hold?)? Also I like what you did with the amber light bar, might run a separate branch circuit and copy that!
And fyi, I have seen some of your other videos and like what you're doing, the ignition relay video(and the garage door opener programming, lol) was well informing and plan to do a similar thing to run an air compressor, air horn and other goodies! I'll keep following.

Here’s a workaround for ya!
ruclips.net/video/k4uM1_-_Ot0/видео.html
Also there are three wires going into the RC light bar, one is ground, one is light bar power and one is DRL power.
I did everything just as you said, same connectors, quadruple checked it, still nothing out of the yellow wire going to the relay

This is a GM part but the indicator light on the button won’t light up but other than that it’s perfect and $100 less than the one currently on sale through GM.

www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/162734-foglights-on-with-high-beams/
Next do you have harnesses for your lights?

Not complete but close...
Yes it will work for 1500. Just make sure to get the right backlight color.
nice video ......quick question do you know if there is a way to put the factory trailer brake control for a 2016 gmc 1500 all terrain ....with out haveing to go aftermarket control ....
Pgamboa is working on that on gm-trucks.con forum right now actually. He has installed everything and is waiting on module programming...
Hello, can you post a part number list? I have the same exact connectors as you. But having a hard time finding the pins
Excellent video, do you think that switch can work on 2014 sierra 1500wt?
Great video, it seems as though my 2017 GMC Sierra has this orange light on the dash with the backwards D. Im wondering if this may still work assuming I have the two empty slots in the pin connector, correct?
Worked on my 2017
@@jrpipe56 awesome thanks. Did the light show on the dash?
@@jaredcraig7 yup
@@jrpipe56 awesome thanks so much I’m going to do it!
Wow! love the professional / factory install! what light bar was used?
That was an amber KC. I just replaced it over Christmas with a 30” curved Rough Country. Video to come...
@@kevefox okay great thank you. do you remember what size diode you used
Yes, let me find it...it’s IN4004
@@kevefox so my light bar has DRL functionality and the ground/negative is wired into the relay as well.
Would that switch work in a 2016 Silverado ltz. Great video by the way
The switch would work but it has the wrong color background. I believe you have a blue background in the switch. Right in the beginning of the video I show the part number for a blue background switch. That is the one you will need
@@kevefox yea mine is blue. But thank u defiantly gonna look into doing this I want to add a light bar behind the grill but I hate after market switches.
Great work man 👍
Very well done 👍🤠🇺🇸
Thank you!
The black and white wire are eliminated or do you re install those later and I missed it
I noticed you said 16 is red and 17+ is blue. My 2016 1500 is blue so would I need to order this switch for a 2017+?
Yes, they will work for all years within the body style. Chevy will be blue earlier on than GMC.
@Tinkering Fox Awesome video!
Do you know if this switch would work for a 2016 silverado 2500hd lt?
Thank you! Yes but just order the right part number for the right color background.
Just ordered my switch, thinking of ordering the harness from gamboa. Will his harness wire in just like yours?
Yes, Phil’s wiring is exactly the same. It will save you a lot of time.
Where did you find all this awesome information?? I am looking to do the same thing but I have a 17 Colorado.
I got it forwarded to me from a friend. You can have a dealer print the install info for you at the parts dept. the still frame pics are for a Colorado/Canyon so you’re good to go.
Would the install process be the same for a 2016 Silverado 1500? Same bcm plugs and all?
Yes, same thing.
Yes, same thing.
harnessdr.com/product/off-road-light-headlight-switch-bcm-harness/
When you turn on your high beams does the light bar turn off automatically like if it was a fog lights
No, it stays on. I grabbed the signal from the high beam switch for the negative trigger (86) on my relay so the high beams turn the light on and off.
Will this work with a 2016 Colorado. I installed a light bar in my bumper and would like to incorporate this switch to control it. Thanks in advance for reply.
Did this ever get answered? In the same boat and would to know if Colorado and Silverado share elec. diagram.
Here is a workaround for that problem…

Hello is the X1 connector always white and on the right end of the BCM?
@@kevefox awesome thank you! I’ll try the work. Hopefully I remember which is which. I might have to rewatch the video here as a refresher!
Thanks!!!
Yes, anything’16 and up should be pre-programmed.
Thank You.
How would I get rid of the long press? Don't want to blind oncoming drivers on the backroads.
@@kevefox You're doing the Lord's work sir and it is greatly appreciated
Ok got it, got to GM upfitter…..www.gmupfitter.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Sierra_Silverado_Electrical_Body_Builders_Manual_Service_Manual_2016_en_US.pdf
I just pulled up electrical info for a 2016 Sierra/Silverado but it will be the same for everything.
@@kevefox This is exactly what I was looking to do. Thanks a ton brother, it's much appreciated.
Could you do the same with a Silverado or Sierra 2500HD 2020
Will this work on a 2018 Silverado W/T? I have a 2018 Silverado with push button 4wd and I would love to do this to mine as I am adding some off-road lights in the near future.
Also are these trucks already pre wired for fogs? I know my fuse panel has a spot with a fuse in it but the truck does not have fog lights (yet lol).
If it doesn’t already have fog lights then this likely won’t work but here is a workaround for you…..

Thank you I would really appreciate if you could give me a hand!

This should help...
Ok cool thanks man, so I would need to get a latching relay and that other connector that hooks up behind the brake pedal and wire it just like you did on the video and it should work for the fogs?
Or would it be a different number than 6 slot for fog lights?
Any chance you might have the blue switch for sale?
Hey great video but apparently I’m an idiot. Just got the switch completely wired. Was hoping to test the switch before beginning the work under the hood. Any reason the dash light wouldn’t turn on even after pushing and holding? Does the relay and off road light need to be fully assembled to complete the circuit? All other switch functions seem to work.
You need to have the key on and the headlights need to be “on” or be on due to low light conditions like in “auto” with the photo sensor on the dash covered. Do a long press (several seconds).
