For anyone wondering, neither of us use right hand retrieve reels but since we will be giving the reel away we chose the right hand retrieve since that is the most commonly used.
*I already own the Battle II combo **enjoyable.fishing** recommend and decided to try a Fierce II combo to carry out to the pier. Works great and for the money they are hard to beat.*
Fishingislife A fleet of Ambassadors,4500 through 7000.A Revo S,Revo STX,Revo Toro....nothing but consistent reliability.A few of the Ambassadors are nearly 20 years old, still pulling fish.
My revo sx works like crap, bad bearings right out of the box but it was my first baitcaster so i had no way of knowing, upgrading to bocas, just wish i knew so i could have gotten a replacement. Tip for anyone getting into baitcasters, have a buddy who knows them give it a once over.
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ruclips.net/user/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
I started out with it very good starting reel but no there is so many better reels with a 100$ price range don’t get me wrong it’s a good reel but not the best
I have 1 and love it, they didn't have an ambassador in stock so I bought the black max and I have 0 complaints, anything Abu garcia is good especially since they're affordable
I have had this real and it's amazing for beginners. I've had it for 4 years and works amazing still. The reel is in perfect shape but the rod just broke today from user error.
Worst reel ever made, it will be making a lot of noise about the 3rd time you go fishing with it. I left mine in the bottom of the pond where I threw it after continuously getting on my nerves. But I hope you enjoy yours.
I have two black max reels and matching poles and they are great. I texas rig, Carolina, and crank or spinners it all works very well on this have caught many fish including my recent one of 5.68lbs large mouth
I'm still relatively new to bait casting and have only used 2.. One being a very old one that was originally my gpas and I even used it today and caught fish in it, the other being buddies black max on multiple occasions. The only issue I have with it is that it is finicky to set up lighter tackle on and have had rats nested even after being properly set up but only with lighter tackle. any Texas or wacky rig works extremely well.. gets a little hard to do with lighter grubb/jig setups. had it rats nest in mid air because of even though it was dropping slower than normal. With normal or heavy weight tackle though have never had the first issue and is probably one of the nicer reels I've ever casted on any spectrum from open face to baitcasting
I've owned 2 of these reels personally and both of them were (and are still) tanks. They survived years of use and abuse with 0 service. I like it almost as much as my $120 Diawa. For the money you can't beat the reel in my opinion. Some would call it a starter reel but for someone like me who has been fishing all his life I still love this reel.
i got a diawa air ride coastal and i love that reel but i still use my abu garcia black max and i use it for my crank bait reel and it is awesome i had it for about a 1 and 1/2 years and ive caught alot of fish on it and it feels like its still brand new and ive beat the hell out of the reel and iit cast a mile
My brother just gave me one of these the other day took it out to the lake Had no problems And it was actually really smooth even when casting up wind.
I’m thinking about getting one of these, but never used bait caster reel. When you say dial it in, is there fine tuning you have to do? Also, I couldn’t tell but do you have to thumb the spool always when casting to prevent bird nesting?
I caught the muskie in my profile pic on a 3rd gen black max with 40lb braid and it was paired up with a 7 foot ugly stick. The reel had zero problems bringing it in. Recently put a set of abec 7 in it and the casting distance is close to double now. It's a great reel and I got mine for 40 bucks brand new. The bearings cost more than the reel. There isn't a better quality reel for 40-50 bucks out there.
Start with the tightening the tension knob down and increase the breaks! Your casting distance will suffer but once you get the hang of it and the line gets broken in you’ll be able to loosen the tension knob and breaks and start bombing casts🤙🏻
Absolutely! You want it tight enough so you’re able to fight the fish but loose enough so the fish won’t break you off! All about finding that happy medium😁
what are the terms for winning this reel..(Abu Garcia-Black Max)..I have a very old bait caster. I've always only used bait casters when I was little for either large float or bottom fishing..but I'm seeing so many people using them for Bass...WOW & I'm 67yrs. old...hmmm learn something new everyday I guess..
I love my Abu Garcia black max and if you want to give me another one I would be more than happy to take it off your hands. It is my first bait caster and still learning how to use it properly. Any video suggestion?
I actually recently bought the reel. I have it on a 6.0/moderate action rod and it feels nice. I've never used a baitcaster so this is my first one. I normally just use open face spincast reels.
Almost bought the reel and rod combo yesterday at Big 5. They were only asking 59 for the combo. looks sick with the matching rod. May have to go back and grab it..
Great video guys. Hey do a video on setting the Abu-Garcia Black Max up ok. I am starting all over. Had a mild stroke but want to get back to fishing. Thank you for all ypu do here!! I appreciate you guys.Larry Gene Pate
Hey man we appreciate it! Check out our recent video of the Abu Garcia Black Max! I am sorry for the stroke and I hope you are doing well. I am glad to hear you are getting back into fishing! Our new content is much better than this video!
I liked your video and I am new to using a baitcast reel, do you have an old baitcast reel you can bear to part with please? Thank you for reading my message.
I have to disagree with you on that. What if you are in a place where you need to get your bait out to and that little silver max just doesn't have the ump to get it out there whereas the pro max or black max will land it where you need to get to. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Big Feet I agree with your reasoning, but I it is true that having a more expensive reel doesn’t necessarily make you a better fisherman. Also, the Silvermax is higher price and quality than the blackmax
I disagree because during the winter time bass dont like to hit it hard at all and when you reel it in you got a fish on and you didn't even know it, sensitivity matters
Syndicate Sabot I’ve tried everything. Even with the button not pressed I can still pull line out of it. I am a beginner to baitcasters but have used some in the past and none have done this lol
I am not 100% sure on this. I know the reel is a very strong reel so it should be good but depends on what you are using it for. It is worth a shot though!
Like and totally agree with the review guys! I've used a black max reel for 3 years now, and it's outlasted the Lew's 50$ speedspool counterpart :) Now the silvermax (flipin') reel I didn't understand when I was buying the reel while 1st getting started... and if the flip switch is engaged and someone goes to cast with it normally, say buh bye to your gears. I'm in the market to replace 2 reels at the moment lol
Awesome man, If you are looking at some more expensive reels I prefer Shimano. Not sponsored or anything by them that is just my honest opinion. They have a wide range of reels that I have in my arsenal.
I've had 2 and both have been great reels. they are smooth, cast far and are tanks. I've caught tons of fish on them big and small. they handle light lures well and heavy. I have a hard time dropping $100+ on any reel period. the most I ever spent was $120 on a diawa advantage on clearance. I love both reels the black max are great if you ask me for a cheaper reel and are like me and hate to drop $100+ on a reel.
Yes, Bait cast poles have different eyes on them as well as they are meant to be bent the opposite way. That way the bait caster will sit on top of the rod and not under like a spinning reel.

great review, very helpful for someone new to baitcasting. I do however need to ask some questions : For a complete beginner who never used a baitcaster before, would you recommend to start with Black Max or Silver Max ? It will be mostly used for fishing in a river (upper parts of Thames in England). I have a caster rod (Ugly Stick GX2, 6'6" medium heavy). I'm looking for something that will be not too difficult to dial in, and to cast far enough (don't need to cast onto the opposing bank ;> ) Since it is going to be first baitcaster, I'm looking for something cheap hence I wanted to narrow it down to these two models, hence my question - is Silver Max that much better / smoother than Black Max , or should I get Black Max to start with ?
Hello Anthony, I personally think it would do perfectly fine with catfish. Although I have never used it for catfish it is a respected fishing reel so I am confident it would work.
Do a medium priced lews (BB2, the white lightweight pro one, or do the daiwa tatula hyper long casting reel [ purple and black on TW) if you want, they are all around 200.
