The only reel that I've literally broken is a Piscifun reel, and it's the reel foot, less than one month usage. The company offered me a full refund though. I'd recommend Silver Max as the beginner BC. Just a few dollars more, IMO you got a smoother feel, clicking drag star, and same durability if not longer.
The black max was my first reel! Bought two of them and used them for 3 years! Never had a problem and they still work great!! Just oiled them every now and then. Recently I upgraded and bought a Shimano chronarch mgl and wow what a difference!
I made a comment 9 months ago about catching a LOT of fish on this reel. I can happily say I have now caught these fish on this reel. Ten 5lb bass One 6lb bass Two 7lb bass One 14lb catfish And it is still just humming right along. Zero modifications other than using a braid backing and 20lb fluorocarbon line. It is hands down my favorite reel even after acquiring two different Lew's reels that are 2-3x as expensive. I will say that I have cleaned it several times and did some maintenance on the bearings. Highly recommend people buy this reel this holiday season when it goes on sale. Only thing I wish I did differently was put it on a medium heavy rod instead of the medium 6,6 black it comes with in the combo.
True story, I got this reel and in less than 3 weeks have easily caught 100-150 3+ pound bass and it has been amazing. No joke, this damn thing is amazing for the money.
I bought a Black Max on a lark. Now have 3 of them. Use them mainly striper fishing. After a few years they are all going strong after many, many, many, fish. The gen 3 does out cast the early ones. Casting a standard 110 jerkbait it will equal my Revo sx and Tatula. I think you'll be surprised.
This is a great video I love mine I just got the hang of it I wana buy a higher gear ratio but this thing is nice a sold I bought it in a rod and reel combo for 59$ at walmart I was trying to get to my bearings thanks for the help bud
Looks like a great reel. Never used one. I would like to try one and give you my feed back. Looking for a nice Trout reel this looks like it might work
I have 5 of them, a silver max and a pro max. Out of the box they're ok but with hybrid ceramic bearings (cheap Chinese one) and carbon washers they're nice and smooth. Oh and I also removed 1 magnet.
@@THEREELTEST Thanks a lot! And for Weekend Bass fishing in spinning : DW Legalis , DW Exceler or Sahara FI? I can also get the Ultegra FB at 40% more $.

One of my favorites in my arsenal. I love Swedish engineering! I'm going to modify mine for BFS fishing. Also, tip for anyone interested in purchasing this reel; check out walmart's website, they put them on sale periodically. Got mine for $32
Hey bro awesome videos! Have you done a review on the Abu Garcia Pro Max Baitcaster? If not can you do one? I want to get this reel but would love to see a review on it by you brother! Thank for such great vodeos!
The only problem I have ever had with the MAX series in general was that the worm gear for the levelwind would burn out very quickly other than that they're worth every penny
Can you do a video on how to clean/oil your reels? I just got a curado70xg and straight out of the box, I spun the handle to see how long it’d spin for and it barely made 4 or 5 whole revolutions. Don’t know where and how to oil it
Haha thats funny. I've got the same issue. Those blown-up diagrams are too intimidating for me. Anyways, thought I'd ask. Keep up the good work on your channel. Your popularity will skyrocket this winter as everyone is inside with cabin-fever.
I'd be interested in opinions comparing/contrasting the Black Max and the Kastking Spartacus. Preferably from someone who's owned and used them both. TIA
The Amazon price for this reel in Canada is $87.07 CDN plus 13% sales tax. Not a $50 reel here. Once again Canadians get ripped off as the exchange rate should make it around $66 CDN
I'm going to add my vote to this being the most popular baitcaster. You also have to consider that there are a LOT of companies who put these reels on their rods. Shakespeare puts them on the Ugly Stik, for example.
I think sometimes thumb bar tightness varies reel to reel. One of my Zillion SV TW's feels like my Chronarch MGL almost, but the other wiggles just a tad when retrieving (not mushy though).
Its a great starter reel.. i filmed a video last winter on how to cast a baitcaster using the Black Max but never finished it. I was surprised how far it could cast!
Abu Garcia has a serious issue with their thumb bars. Every abu I have ever owned had the same problem. The thumb at would begin to stick and grind, like plastic on straight plastic. And now they have almost scratched a notch into the side. I can feel it pop out when I press down the thumb bar.
yes. if u look into internal part ABU reels always use plastic THUMB BAR ASSY even though we always complain grinding thumb bar "feel" ..even mine..promax 3 but my thumb bar works ok so far(+ -1 year)..i think if ur concern is thumb bar , spend a bit more n get shimano instead..their internals different..or check out Tackle Advisors video
$40 presently at my Wal-Mart. I paid $48 on line because I wanted the left handed version. I have 2 now and am happy with them. I do feel it’s worth a bit more for the left hand crank version.
You should compare the Blackmax and the Ultramax.. The Ultramax is the one you can only get at Dick's and on a Vengence rod.. $79.99 if not on sale but it goes on sale a lot. I have both and I am pretty certain the Ultramax is a Blackmax but with silver hardware instead of red. Everything seems the exact same inside and out.
I use mine for saltwater kayak fishing, but I take it apart and clean it after every trip. I've dunked it in saltwater a few times on accident, and it still works. Just have to clean it and maintain it more.
I’ve fished it in saltwater 5-6 times. Never washed it after. Never dunked it either, but it still works like a charm. I basically abuse it just to see how much it can take. Even used it for pike jerkbait, like 100grams. Never had a problem. Yet. 😄
I wish success for your channel, And i Hope you can Buy a better camera. Very good videos, and a i Want to see more curado K tests. Sorry for bad english.
"a lot of really new companies popping up" isn't just for fishing reels, it's practically for everything we buy these days. It's due to internet sales from sellers without stores and, of course, OEM manuf's are willing to sell their products to anyone who can put a different name on them. It kinda makes me sick to see it because it turns product research into a nighmare for some things. ...and then you throw in the counterfeits, knockoffs, and look-alike copies to make it even more difficult.
Yup. They are still at Walmart. And the looks don’t catch fish, the ANGLER catches fish. Ima tell you about the black max......As an angler, for $39.99 at WALMART, it out performs ANY Lew’s that was ever made. When you wanna step up to top quality, spend the money to make a video and do a review on the Abu Garcia Revo SX.
The more expensive ones do. The revo x for $99 at walmart does. Just played with it last night. I own a black max and use it more than my more expensive reels.
Silvermax is a much better reel. I liked it better than the pro Max even. Tons better than my black Max. I still run my silvermax right next to my revos. Nobody ever talk about them either.
@@THEREELTEST They do. I believe only by about $10 or $15 depending where you purchase from. You can immediately feel a difference that I think is worth it though.

When you do that how-to-baitcast vid, can you cover how to overhead cast? A friend hand-me-down'd and old 80's-90's Shakespeare SS420/Berkley MH 6' Equalizer last spring to get me interested in baitcasting and learn on (damn thing is a broomstick and I'm *shocked* that the clearly never-serviced 80's reel casts & retrieves pretty great for it's age/quality level, even the drag still holds up to the random river musky), I can cast off my side no problem but for the life of me I just can't cast overhead without birdnesting every single time.
