The E string I personally use is the Pirastro No 1 E string for violin (soft): amzn.to/2GvqW69

Thank you for your tips on cleaning and making it sound good, Zlata. In my first year playing violin, sometimes i get some unexpected squeaks on the e string, But from my 3rd thru 9th year which is today, it sounded fine, but i'd be careful if i peg tune the e string because it'll break real easy, and that is a little risky and embarrassing. I appreciate your demonstrations. Hugs from America!

I had big issues with this on my student violin. A Warchal helix string (Amber, IIRC) eliminated that problem. Later, I used a Kaplan KS311W (aluminum would steel core) which was also sounds less harsh and metallic, which is very welcome on that violin. The new violin is more resonant, and needs the brightness of a standard E string to sound balanced, so I suspect the KS311W would just sound dull on that one. It was also pretty hard to provoke whistling on it in the first place, but now I'm using a helix E strring anyway, as that's what comes with the Warchal Timbre set I have on now. It actually does sound warmer and cleaner than the plain E string did, but still bright and clear enough for good balance, so I think the helix is a good solution if you want to solve a whistling problem without losing the brightness.

Thanks for that tip! How do you like the Timbre strings?

@@violinlounge I'm really liking them! Good dynamic range with a rich, expressive tone available at all times, also in high positions. Maybe not as forgiving as Pirazzi Gold for loud, powerful playing, but they can certainly deliver some power. Difficult to tell exactly without a direct A/B comparison, but my impression is that the Timbres have a more brittle, nuanced tone, which I prefer.
Also, I was worried about the price of these, but curiosity got the better of me, and I put my first set on the student violin. Worked great there too - and they were still not showing any obvious tone or tuning issues six months later! Those are still on that (now mostly retired) violin. So, if that's representative, they're actually pretty affordable long term, considering that my Pirazzi Gold set started going dull and having tuning issues after about two months on that same violin.

Thank you Zlata, I have just purchased a new bow muesing c3 wich is just wooow . And my e string started to whistle everytime! And the same with my old bow.... I changed the e-string with a spare warchal amber I had and that was the solution. It appears that the thomastik orchestra e string gets old very fast ....

This is awesome information information and needed right now. I can't blame my violin or bow. I have my new bow that I told you about...handmade in Brazil. Humidity changes constantly here in Alaska. But I think string changes..arm and hand, is the problem. I am performing Largo next week. It is slow, so your information was super helpful.

Good one Zlata. Question, do you think some of us might benefit from getting a heavy e or would it sound just as shrill but louder ?

This all depends on the type of string and your violin. I'd say try one out.

Hi. I had a wicked E whistle until I tried a Larsen Tzigane Stark E. My instrument is a bit overly bright. Balance of strings are stark G and D, med A.

Zlata, very comprehensive video on this topic. Very well done, my compliments! For me and my self monitoring, my worst offenders are an occasional incorrect bowing lane or my left index finger muting the E string, but your point set was all encompassing indeed. 👍😎😘👨🏻

I’m incorrect. E string is to close to the board. So, I’m going to get it repaired. Not my fault. Thank you for the great troubleshooting tips.
