I have watched multiple videos on this engine about timing and you were by far the best at explaining. Thank you for saving me time and a lot more money
Hey Brian, I am having an issue timing this engine, the exhaust camshaft will not sit still for me. The exhaust camshaft rolls when I try to line it up with the arrow on the exhaust cam cap. Have you ever had this issue?
A few questions. When you rotate the shafts so they line up with the arrows, does it matter what direction you rotate them? Also I've seen a few videos when after they install the chain, all is said and done and they rotate the crank like 5 times to make sure the tensioner is released. Is it safe to turn the car on at any position or should you turn the car on only at the arrow marks matching?
This engine is stupid easy to service. I'm looking at. 2007 Rav 4 for my wife and this is easier then the Honda Odyssey for access. The Oddesy is like doing a sienna but this is more simple and one of Toyota's reliable engines.
I have a (silly) question. When did you make video did you take the engine out of you recorded the bottom of the engine from the position of right front wheel? I ask because most videos show the engine completely dismantled and taken from a car. This video is simple and genius at the same time.
The way you're setting the timing on this car, is it the same for a 2005 Corolla 1.8? This is the first time I've seen your video as your other comments say you break it down a lot further
hey guy out how do u line up the timeing marks on the oli pump i did mine an im stumped on the timing marks on the oil pump it is very important to find out they never show you this in these videos can you help me out on this matter ??
Hey soo I think my timing chain on my tarago needs replacing but I'm not sure . There's a knocking sound when the engines warmed up the sound dies down a bit. The only loud when the vans engine is cold.
I know you posted this awhile back, But....Im troubleshooting a for lack of better words a slight ign mis while increasing rpm between gears. Its a toyota 2.4 Tacoma 5sp, When I check my Timing with my OBD2 reader in Ign Advance Data. Its right around 10 deg at idle, then I put the pin in the OBD1 , FSM says it should go to 5 degs, it does. Reading with the scanner these are the numbers I get. But If I hook up a timing light, I see the mark way to the right, facing the truck. truck idles great, revs great, only have problem under load. any Idea. can I trust scanner.
Do you have any idea what the km limit is when the timing chain needs to be changed for Toyota Avansis 2.0 petrol? I want to buy one that has 170,000 km. Do you think it will take you at least 50,000km?
Hi, I have 2010 Toyota Camry XLE, it give a code which says. P0017 camshaft position B camshaft position correlation bank 1. I replaced all the sensors realted to timing chain, but still the engine light doesn't go away. But engine does not make and nois, very soft. What I have to do
I have a V8 jag XJ. The check engine light comes on and the mechanic said when someone did the head gasket they didn’t set up the timing correctly . How long does it take to do this job and is this common issue ? Why would the other mechanic not set it up correctly , I thought it’s a straight forward procedure that is hard to mess up .
fred bachir there’s a solenoid on the back of the cylinder head that controls a variable cam timing that is most likely the cause. Also low and dirty engine oilCan cause that problem. May want to start with a simple oil change.
Trying to give a friend a hand. She had her 2.4 L rebuilt, cost $3200 without install. Exhusband installed but left it with a P0016, I check all systems connected and everything is,good. Pulled valve cover, set timing mark to 0degrees on pully, cam marks look off by 10 degrees. Found out ex couldnt to get it to start so he fooled with chain after paying some one all that money. Do all the chains have colored links, this one doesn't. What brands have colored links?
Patriotic American As far as I know all the new change will come with colored links. If you have one without the color on it it’s I would suspect it as being a old or use chain.
Thank you.Have you ever pulled a 2007 Camry timing cover without removing the engine? I'm tempted to plug voids, cover parts and grind away the timing cover a couple match books thick where the chain runs to correct the 1 tooth it is off,the cover is pretty thick thick there. Although I am capable of repairing the error I don't have that much time to invest, might be a compromise to the $1,000 plus the dealer will charge.
Thanks! The service manual doesn't show the 2 lines on the intake cam so I had the right line and the "ex" dot lined up. obviously didn't start. High Five !!!
I redid the timing like the video. Started right up. Runs better than before. Much smoother and quieter than before the head gasket and helicoil. Stays cool as it should. Thanks again.
Very helpful video. Followed everything step by step but my chain has some slack near the crank sprocket, is that normal or should it have full tension? Thanks.
alex meza what do you put the timing chain guides back in place and the tensioner back in place that should remove the slack. Also as you start the vehicle and drive it with pressure will push the tensioner out and tighten the chain. Just make sure all the links are lined up and you should be good.
How to Automotive going to swap out the engine in the next few days so if i need to run it for tensioner to tighten up i will wait til then. thanks for the quick reply i will keep u updated.
Hi Brian i did clear all the code with my OBD scanner , still wont crank now i have a charger and it shows the battery low i will let it charge over night how would i get it out of safe mode , i will keep you posted i am open for any idea as always thanks for your help, keep posting those videos they are very informative and helpful great job
Great vedio about finding out original markings of timing chain. Cheers. but i would like to see a vedio which can show us how to replace timing chains successfully. Step by step instructing vedio will do much more help. Can you please post one. Thanks.
ian young sorry your have car trouble. Cording to the codes the throttle actuator has lost power or is shorted out. That's the throttlebody it's all electronic.
ian young probably going to have to have somebody check it out unless you have tools yourself and you will need a flowchart to figure this problem out.
MrStoneycool69 overall I couldn't say anything bad about either one of those engines. They both have minor little quirks but overall very good engines.
Thanks for your reply. I was thinking the Honda would be less maintenance due to rocker arm tappet adjustments with feeler gauges, compared to Toyota's cam follower shim adjustments with a micrometer. But I there again how often do you do this...
i got all the dots lined up and now i have low compression wtf i never took the heads off just all new timing parts for the vvti and what not plus i get a code for crack posistion sensor maybe becasue it aint lined up or what im thinking i put the vvti on the wong notch throwing it off or what
you didnt show us how you did it you showed us what it looked like after you did the work would of been a great video if you had showed us as you did it. been a whole lot more useful.
I did one of these now it want start just cranks wtf could be wrong ima try to make sure the timing is perfect tommorow besides that I can't see what else besides crank sensor which I had off
The timing chain is off and you need to line up the cam gears. Let's say there are off by 5 degrees. How do you move them to the mark? Seems like a no brainer. Move it with a wrench but then why not tell us that I have done that on a 87 vw but some of these vehicles have interference engines and phasers and what not. I imagine when a chain breaks shafts don't line up but have yet to find a video where the mechanic shows us how he got the cam shaft to the line up marks. Thanks
Umii Khan i'm not sure how to explain it in text. But I do show you how to set the marks up in the video. It seems like we may have a language barrier here.
he put the paint marks on his chain. look for the gold chain it will be a different color from the rest of the chains. that will be your timing mark for the chain
Good stuff I'm trying to get all info . Possible to put back chain that a person who took a single mothers car apart.. he took her money and ran.. she had a knocking in the eigen . He side he would fix but left her with no trans porttaion .. I have to help or she can't work To pay rent .. thank all out there god is my key

Very informative. So glad I haven't had to do anything with the chain yet... 2009 2.4 Camry 330k miles, still going strong!
Wes Kellogg Toyotas have amazing little engines as long as you keep fluids in them
Sweet, just what I was looking for. Seems pretty simple. Thanks for uploading.
you're a life saver, thank you.

thanx for a the good presentation
Is there should be resistance when lining up the cam mark?
Hi Brian thanks for your help the you where right the throttle body actuator unit was disconnected, now the ml350 wont crank over, and ideas ??
ian young I would start with battery. If the battery went dead I would recommend jumping it with a jump box not with jumper cables and another car.
ian young it also may have gone into failsafe mode. So you will have to clear all the codes with a scan tool
Thanks fir the video. I have camshaft and crankshaft correlation sensors bank1, on my RAV4 2008 2.4L .what do you suggest me to do. Thanks

nice video, hey i was wondering, have you ever not set it correctly-? will i have spark if that happens?
I’ve never had a timing chain motor off but a timing belt motor a half. If it’s just one tooth off it’ll run bad but I’ll still run.

what's the torque number for you camshaft on that engine2.4
I have a 2002 Toyota RAV4 with the 2.0, is that the same set up for the 2.0?
Sean Strandfeldt it's pretty much the same exact thing just a few small differences. But I would definitely check with the service manual
Do you know what the book time for the head gasket is on that car?
Mookie Man 11 hours plus time for drilling out head bolt. Most likely around 14 hours.

James Bond check and see if you have spark. If you don’t I would suspect crank Sensor. You can check compression and if it’s low suspect timing.
it has both sir no spark getting the srank sensor code and low compression also 70lbs so im guessing timing is causeing both?
keep in mind the heads didnt come off i just change the timing parts for the vvti rattle
