I watched other videos and they made no reference to this. I spent half a day pulling my starter (upper bolt was a bear to get out) and having it tested (good). I also swapped relays with the rear window defogger, since they were the same., but problem persisted. I found this video and decided to act on it. I paid $66 for the switch and the replacement was fairly easy. It also looks much more robust than the original, with the metal housing. So far, there's been no more problems. 🤞🤞 Thanks for posting this.

I'm surprised there isn't more out there on this issue. Very common, very annoying and often misdiagnosed. I bet thousands of batteries have been overcharged or replaced due to this. Thanks for the video!

I have a elderly neighbor with a 2010 Santa Fe with this problem. Dealership charged $196.26 on 8/29/20 for the updated replacement. If anyone needs to go to dealership "it happens", this updated price gives you an idea of dealer or garage replacing. Great video!

Got the part off Amazon for $23.
Replaced it in a 2005 Elantra and didn't fix only being able to start in neutral.. Turns out the cable (attached to the nut mentioned to not move in the video) needed to be adjusted further back to recognize it was in park.
I just shoved a small screwdriver in the bolt-less hole to match up while in neutral, then moved the cable back and tightened the nut (12mm.)
The old switch may have still been good,
Regardless, I learned how to adjust the play in the shift column which is STILL useful!!!
(Likely fucked up the old NSswitch while wrestling it out of it's rusty purgatory, so just keeping the new one in)
All in all worth the knowledge !
(Much easier on the '05. Switch is to the left of the battery and doesn't require removing the air box... Or anything for that matter.)

Thanks LifeTac! I was about to have my 2013 Hyundai Elantra towed to a shop when I came across your video. I thought it was the starter that was bad. You walked me through the process, and it came out great! There was serious rust on the center bolt that comes up from the center of the trans. It took some delicate prying to get it off. Otherwise, it was an easy replacement. The part was 65$ at a local parts store. Thanks again from this DIYer!

One HUGE thing missing from this video is to put the car emergency brake on, and then put the handle of a wrench behind the metal plate to keep the shaft from turning CCW as you loosen the nut. As soon as that shaft rotates, the car moves out of park and starts to roll down your driveway. Also, the metal plate often rusts to the shaft. (Everything rusts badly on Hyundai cars.) Hit this with penetrating oil 30 minutes before working on it. If you break that shaft, you just bought yourself a new transmission. The new switch WILL NOT come with the switch in 'park' position like the position the shaft will be in. (But it will be close.) Look inside the new switch and note the two flat plastic parts of the switch opening which align with the flat spots on the metal shaft. You will likely need to rotate the switch with your finger or a screwdriver to get the plastic tabs to line up with the position of the shaft. As others have said, this switch is position adjustable (meaning you can slightly adjust it back and forth....note the elongated mounting holes), and you might need to move it back or forth to allow the gearshift to work properly. Mine needed to move CW in order to get the 'D' to show on the dash after initial install with the bolt holes centered. Wiggling the stick slightly while the car is in drive should NOT make it stall. If it does, rotate the switch clockwise and retighten the two mounting bolts.

@@lilkimphan are you saying that if you slowly switch from park all the way down into second or first gear, all of the dashboard lights light up except for d? Are you sure the LED or bulb for that d is not burned out? I don't have access to this type of car anymore. But basically the d is in The middle of the full travel of the shifter cable, so slowly.... Slowly.... Shift from park all the way down to first gear and see if the d lights up at all even if just for a second then report back.

Thank you for your post, very valuable information. I had similar issues when the solenoid under the shifter inside the car was not getting the signal to allow the shifter to move. I adjusted the neutral safety switch, and it fixed the issues. However, I still have some issues where the car shits hard when the engine is cold. Are there further adjustments to fix these issues? Will a new switch fix the issue? It is 2008 Elantra with 165000 miles.

Hello! Thank you very much for this video! Immensely appreciated! It helped me a great deal to have a video to go with the TSBs. I used this for my 2013 Hyundai Accent. It was having issues with code P0705 Transmission Range Sensor. The digital dash would sometimes not show the P, for Park, on start-up. And if it did not show, it would shift hard, and also not show R, N, or D when shifting, and sometimes trigger the check engine light. If I turned the car off and shifted to N, and then back to P, it would typically correct the issue and could drive as normal. Sometimes it would start up fine with no problem as well. I just used your video to help replace the switch, and so far so good on the first couple tries. Hopefully it corrected the problem 100%, but won't know for sure until a number of more tries. As others have mentioned, I put the car in N first after putting the parking brake on, and then replaced. It was also a bit easier to do if you put a screw driver in the alignment hole in the bottom right corner of the switch (on TSB) before untightening and tightening the bolts on the switch. Also compare prices with Kia and Hyundai for this part, as they both make this exact part with same number, and it lists both companies right on the switch. Thank you again!

Buy online from a Hyundai dealer as they have been redesigned and are beefier looking now, about 50$. I'm in the midst of replacing mine right now.. Old safety switch has 7 contacts (4 large, 3 small), whereas mine (and yours in the video) has 4 large and 4 small. This does not cause any problem at all?

Great videa . My elantra has no power nothing! Its like the battery is out of the car. Then after some time I return to the car get in mess with a few things and then all of a sudden I have power and it starts. The battery was checked no problems and the clock and radio don't need reset so I know Im not losing all power. Is this what everyone is talking about or having a bad switch mean that the car won't turn over but still has electric.

Ever seen this problem on a 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l. Car will not start. Not getting any codes but in park was able to slightly roll the vehicle and heard an audible click as if the transmission cable is not adjusted properly. Any thoughts?

Wow I wonder if this is what’s wrong with my car . First issue we had was the key getting stuck in the ignition and having to remove the plug to shut the whole car off to shut down the car . Then it won’t start some days and then some days it starts up and goes weeks working fine . Then back to not working again not starting makes a small click sound all lights come on battery is fine but won’t start . No codes showing up on the diagnosis and we have been financially in a crappy position because of this having to take Ubers to take my kids to school and husband to work being left broke with no money because of this issue. I hope this is the issue

I have a question would that neutral safety switch be located in the same spot on my 2012 Kia forte or will it be in a different spot because I believe my neutral safety switch is starting to go out on my Kia forte because my car is not wanting to start after leaving it set and when I press on the break and press on my automatic transmission shifter it starts right back up so I believe mine is going bad that is why I'm asking

Excellent Video...2 questions my 2012 Elantra I was having a no crank/no start issue, changed the battery so far it's still OK...But now I have an issue after starting...high rpm idle 2000+...in park 20 to 30 seconds before it drops to below 1000 rpm, still jerks a bit when putting into drive, and from the take-off, it jerks erratically all the way up to the top gear and while accelerating same jerking issue... any ideas, and do you have a site where questions can be responded to by you...Thank you great job!

What if the neutral safety switch was stuck. When trying to remove it the thing it sets ontop of the transmission pulled up with it and now it wont go in reverse?

Does the car have to be in neutral to remove the neutral safety switch. I can get everything removed down to the switch but it doesn't seem to want to pop off the post. I have a 2011 hyundai sonata so a little different set up but process is the same.

I have a 2013 Elantra and it started clicking. I replaced the battery and still the same problem. Day later no click and my battery is dead because my parking lights stay on without my key even in the ignition. No one seems to carry the inhibitor part either or have the starter in stock. We need to call Hyundai and tell them we are all having the same issue.

In case anyone was reading, it was my clock spring, not this repair.
I had 3x mechanic visits and none could diagnose the no-start problem. This video has saved me a lot of headaches!

I'm curious. My son has a 2013 elantra, and is having starting issues. He is always able to jump start it. If it was the safety switch that was causing it not to start, he shouldn't be able to jump it, am I correct? The battery is putting out over 12 volts, when the car is started i get over 14 volts without a drop in power. It is very frustrating how it is intermittent. the car did throw codes for 1 and 3 cylinder misfire. I changed all of the plugs (the most expensive ones I've ever bought) and swapped the coils around. We haven't had a code again, but still have the starting issues. I hate to just change parts and hope it gets fixed. It is a pain in the ass.
