  • A unique take on "Cluck Old Hen" by Bertie Mae Dickens (1902-1994) of Ennice, N.C. with Andy Cahan (fiddle) and Alice Gerrard (guitar) perfectly complementing her classic clawhammer-style banjo during our 1985 visit. Recording (1985) and photo (1986) by Linda Higginbotham. Photo r-l: Bertie Mae Dickens, Kenny Jackson, Brad Leftwich, Marvin Dickens.
Bertie was also a great cook, and the food kept coming until you just couldn't eat any more -- or until you learned the magic words, "I don't believe I will."

Wow, Brad. Bertie’s playing is stunning. Those note choices are wild and woolly! I love it!!
