This was a very useful recap to see all the lessons brought together. Thankyou. Strangely I must have inadvertently skipped over it as I've already watched several subsequent videos.
As a professional pilot for 50 years plus! I have a technique suggestion! When intercepting guidance from an HSI place the heading curser over the top of the course line that is displaced. IE. Desired inbound course set on HSI of 360! The course guidance needle is to the right with a full scale deflection. the top of that deflected needle is sitting under the 030 of the HSI! move the heading bug to 030 to fly and intercept the 360 degree course as you are left of the desired course. You are correct in verifying the ILS frequency, with modern day avionics Ie the G1000 when the localizer frequency is tuned it automatically checks the identifier (morse Code) and displays the Identifier! this verifies the proper localizer and that the ILS is working properly.
Awesome series of basics. This really has helped me understand how things work and I'm looking forward to be playing with a bit more purpose and realism. Hotas one onboard on Xbox x. Looking forward to new videos!
Great lesson, took me a couple of days before I finished with the Manchester run. Needed to get that first part drilled into me. Today I did the Manchester run and what a ball that was. Its really blowing over there, I was constantly on that heading bug. When I was approaching the Runway and still in autopilot I checked my external camera and the plane was pointing to the runways 2 o'clock, quit a sight but landed safely.
Good idea showing how the individual lessons seamlessly integrate. BTW I can't take credit for suggesting preloading the ILS frequency as I'm only now learning about ILS, VOR navigation, etc. watching your videos
You mentioned something about a SIP panel at the 25:45 Mark but I couldn't see anything change once you set it. What is that? You also mentioned something about localiser, what do you press to select that? as I couldn't see exactly what you did. It looked like pressing a button under the cdi label but then you went up and used the CDi knob for the next part of the process.. I don't recall seeing that before 🤔
Hi again Hudds. Been practicing flying around Ireland using the Garmin NXI and the advice you gave. Just wondering what the significance of approach and altitude hold buttons on the set. Also is Localiser (green) used for what approaches ?
I hope I've understood your questions correctly: the LOC can be used for ILS approaches (similar to what I showed in the video). If flying an Autopilot ILS (LNAV or similar), you can use the APR button so that the autopilot follows the Glideslope down to the runway.
Very nice video as always, thanks. The point where you "cycle through" the VOR1/2/GPS to get the glide slope to change from "NO GS" to green diamond seems to be a recent bug in the sim or the NXi - it never used to need this but now i find it will never show the GS unless you cycle the CDI or swap NAV1 freq out then back in or press APPR multiple times. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.
I have observed the same issues, and the APR button seldom works on a timely basis. Another minor bug is that "VOR2" or "LOC2" is not displayed when switching through the CDI. You know when you actually are in VOR2 or LOC2 by the two-lined arrow, but it still says VOR1 or LOC1.
Hudds ... Is that B button on Hotas or Controller for resetting position on ground. What is the action it controls ? Brilliant videos by the way. Gets the grey matter activated.
Thanks so much for a great video. Do you or have you thought of doing anything on Little NavMap? Your videos are so informative, would love to see a series on this addon program. Thanks again.
Hi again Hudds. Trust you're keeping well. Just noticed that on the main Garmin screen on the left that there's a tab called "Nearest". I've clicked into it and scrolled around using the FMS button but it doesn't seem I can activate a Nearest airport to fly to. Any advice or thoughts would be most welcome.
You can't activate an airport with the nearest button, but you can scroll to the ILS for the airports (if they have one) & it will enter it directly into your comm radio frequencies. It also gives you the heading and distance. I'm aiming to make a video on this & other features of the G1000, this week.
Very helpful!! On preparation, when I load or load/activate the shown approach, i see all the enroute waypoints but NO altitudes (just blank lines). I just went on flying the route, setting target altidude on 2500ft. On final after switching to NAV1 and selecting APP button, it din't lock on the glideslope as well. Any ideas? Thnx!
One thing that comes to my mind: did you line up with the LOC1 Nav lines? This later video gives you a good description of that (in the later parts): ruclips.net/video/nMQTlhZ4Ta0/видео.html
Hi, Huddison, very interesting recap! Well worth the time. As an aside, I recently received a couple of emails from your discord channel saying that you'd mentioned me in a couple of your posts. im having trouble with the flaps not wanting to work before take off cant set them . but once in air they will work could that be a bug are you having the same problem and also the approach button sometimes comes on and sometimes dont. and when it does the green glideslope diamond comes down but does not drop the altitude when it meets up with the autopilot set altitude
I have a feeling that you may have some assistance options turned on, which might explain why you're having problems with flaps. Come into the Discord to discuss your approach issues; we can better help you there.
