  • Join us for the newest episode of Apologia Radio in which we begin a discussion on the popular ex-pastor now Mormon, David Alexander. You might be familiar with the testimony of this new convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He claims to have been an Evangelical Christian for decades and to have been a Pastor as well. He recently converted to Mormonism and is putting out a number of videos criticizing the historic Christian Faith.
On this episode, we begin engaging with some of his comments after seeing a video where he attempts to critique a short engagement between Jeff Durbin and a Mormon missionary.

Just a random thought! Why is it easy to belief someone can say “I am legion” being one body with a thousand demonic spirits but the trinity is beyond comprehension for some that 3 spirits can be One God? He is formed(the literal body of Christ) as one God and none shall be after! It baffles me that 1,000 in one makes sense but no way 3 in 1 does! 💁🏼‍♂️ The Son of Man will be revealed at His second coming as a Father, Son, Holy Spirit but because Gods spirit is infinite and proceeds from the Father it can cover ALL who believe in His son Jesus Christ.

In 1978, when I was troubled by historical realities that shook my trust in Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, my bishop-an otherwise kind and honorable man-smiled at me and told me to ignore it all, to stop seeking the truth. I was 18. I knew I couldn’t serve a mission.

He didn't say to "stop seeking truth". Those are your words, not his. Another ex-mo story embellisher here.
My bro in law is a speaker at ex-mo conferences and has been a pathological liar since he was a teenager. He makes up shocking stories about Bishops too and claims to people that he was a Bishop, but was barely a councilor in a tiny Branch Presidency for a short time. For a long time he pretended to be a devout Mormon for the sake of trying to look good. Eventually after years of cheating on his wife the truth has come out and thankfully they are divorced. My point? you can't believe everything an Ex-Mo says is anymore accurate than anyone else. People on every side of the fence change the words and give a different impression for their own personal agenda.
"troubling truths" is a contemporary anti-Mormon phrase, he didn't say that phrase in 1978, those are also your words.
People often change words a bit and claim they are honest even though those words changes illustrate a completely accounting of the interaction than what really happened.

Wrong. Again. David was sent apologia links by his evangelical friends when he was investigating the church. It was the dishonest tone of what he saw, in contrast to the church and missionaries teaching him, that made him respond. Apologia, because of their tactics, pushed David toward the church of Jesus Christ and he now has towards 250 videos out there. He is a machine. Apologia can take a lot of the credit.

But if you validate using scriptures, then you really don't need the prophecy, you just need to read your Bible more. And if you are in the hunt for fresh prophecy, it's a dark road. You’ve been misled onto the broad road to hell and I am praying for you and those like you with all of my heart. I know many people in false Christianity and my heart breaks for them all, especially when they talk as if they are saved when their beliefs are going to be the cause for Jesus telling them on judgement day, “Depart from Me you worker of iniquity, for I never knew you!” And they will yell things like, “But Lord, we did this in your name…” There’s a reason Jesus told us that. @@mycatwould Hi, just saw the same happening under David Alexander's video when a former LDS believer very kindly and respectfully commented there. Probably the only one, that was not commenting how great and right David Alexander was. David Alexander's response? "Fire and brimstone". Just writing this to state that this happens everywhere, to kind and respectful LDS believers commenting and to kind and respectful non LDS believers commenting. I do not judge you about being a true brother in Christ or not. I cannot see into your heart and I do not know what / in whom you truly put your trust in for you spending eternity in the presence of God. If you trust in the atonement provided by Jesus Christ alone for this because you recognise that you need Him dying in your place, bearing your sin---and that following Him is a consequence of being inhabited by the Holy Spirit, who transforms you into being more and more like Jesus Christ, than I believe you to be a brother in Jesus Christ. If you believe that one needs the LDS Church to be a mediator to the mediator so to speak (a similarity with the Catholic Church) to be with the Father forever than this is a different gospel. Please read what the criminal crucified next to Jesus Christ had to do to be with Him: Believe that He was, who He said He was and that he himself was crucified because he was guilty but that Jesus Christ was not. (See that man s conversation with Jesus and the other criminal). Lots of Christian love to you!

@@chriscross5188 The beauty of Christ’s atonement was that it saves all from physical death through his resurrection. Spiritual death is also overcome through His sacrifice, as the unblemished lamb on our behalf, on conditions of our repentance. Faith in Jesus Christ and baptism, however are specifically required for Salvation. When Jesus told the thief he would be with him that day in paradise - he could not be implying his eternal state, as the judgement is not happened yet. He was instead referring to the spirit world where he and the Saviour would soon be entering.
There is so much more wonderful insight that has been given by the Lord through his prophets over the past 180+ years that helps explain and understand so much more - but until one is willing to accept that God is not finished speaking to His children and once again, as in ancient times, speaks through His chosen prophets, any reply I make will likely be shrugged off. I don’t blame anyone for this. I was born into this church - and feel extremely blessed to have been, as I wonder sometimes if I would have been humble enough to seek it out on my own, or have been receptive to the message if delivered to me with any pre-conceived notions I may have had.
More in my young adult ride and on (I’m in my mid 40’s now), I have studied scripture, fasted, prayed, and practiced to my religion as best as a fallible man can, and repented daily - as not a day has passed that I didn’t need forgiveness and the Lord’s grace to help keep me on the path.

When I hear Mormons use the same language as Christians, "The truth has the power to pursuade" that requires you to have the truth, and not be in spiritual darkness.
What I have learned is that once you have decided that the Bible is no longer sufficient for doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in matters of righteousness, and declare it is corrupt and precious truths lost, you have opened yourself to Satan's deceptions and lies, and it becomes so much easier to pursuade that person into accepting / believing those lies and deceptions.

Removing all bias, weather you're LDS or Christian, it really cannot even be argued that the level of intellect between Jeff and David can clearly be seen based on the discussions each are having in this video. I did not see anything of substance coming from David. He complained the entire time about Jeffs character, assuming many things. Constant vilifying and slander about Jeff with absolutely no sound arguments to combat anything Jeff has said. From someone who has left sound doctrine to embrace a faith started by a false prophet, my expectations were not exceeded.
Respect is earned. I have little respect for those who are unwilling to exchange ideas and no respect for those who not only refuse to dialogue, but speak down towards the other. This is what a coward does. This is why I will not waste much time with a JW. David represents a JW better that he does a member of the LDS church. Those with an unclean spirit are terrified of those who have the Holy Spirit to guide them. This video is a great illustration of that.
I actually had 2 young LDS men in my living room, after almost an hour of discussion, one of them got up and was very angry and said, "I know what you're trying to do, don't you think you can convert us!" (lets just ignore that was exactly what their intent was for me lol) The entire time I was calm and was just asking them questions that they just couldn't answer. The questions I was asking them were making them angry because they started to realize just how foolish the teachings of the LDS church were. Sadly, instead of continuing to engage, their church teachings tell them that Satan was using me to cast doubt upon them. They are to flee when true conviction hits them with sound reasoning, and the truth of God's Word. The devil truly did use Joseph Smith to implement all the safe guards to ensure no one leave the faith where no salvation can be found.

Subjective thinking is solely based on an individuals perspective, feelings, & thoughts for a product. LDS beliefs are NOT SOLEY based on feeling and thoughts for a product. Unless that product is the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The one things that Christians do not have is the words of Jesus Christ in these the last days before his 2nd coming. You only have his words of 2000 years ago. The light and knowledge they contain are based around a set of logical, goal oriented standards. Standards that Jesus Christ has given to us. There is no doubt that when touched by the Holy Ghost, it can bring on extreme feelings. Why if you have not read in the Bible how that works... here is an example:
30 And it came to pass, as he (Jesus) sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
So.. it seems others have even had a subjective thought concerning Christ.

31 minutes in…My sheep hear my voice, and they know me.
I served an LDS mission in South Korea in the mid 1990’s. The Lord is definitely gathering his elect in the latter-days, and there is also a very observable sifting of the wheat from the tares, where many members of not only the LDS faith, but other Christians are leaving their faith -mostly to become atheist or secular agnostics. This is sad to see, but it is also a fulfillment of revelation. I was never taught to not engage with anyone as a missionary, but I did understand the principle of not casting my pearls before swine - meaning to know when someone’s heart was not open to a conversation, but rather contention, for the devil is the father of contention - and it’s near impossible to have a spiritual conversation in those cases. So yes, as our time as full-time missionaries is limited, we want to make the most out of that time, and will focus more of our attention on those humble enough to listen. And I can testify that His sheep do hear His voice. And when they hear about His love for them, and that He has a plan for them - they recognize the voice of their shepherd and it is not the missionary, but the Holy Ghost, who witnesses to them which causes this change in their heart. I have converted nobody in my lifetime as a member of the LDS church. But I have been a witness to the miraculous change in people that only the Lord can do.
Did Jesus waste his time trying to convert the religious leaders of his day? No. He spent his time with “the least of these” - though there is implication that Nicodemus was converted due to a change of heart.

Members are indeed entitled to their own opinion, and indeed we are encouraged to gain a personal witness of anything that is taught.
Here’s the thing - unless you can get on board with the LDS church being the restored church of Jesus Christ, led by Him, none of this will make sense to you. God speaks through his chosen leaders. Jesus was told he was breaking the Mosaic law in many cases; but went on to explain the law - and later that he would fulfill the law, and as we know, even changed the law. Before him, (after Moses) only the Levites were allowed hold the priesthood. After Jesus, the priesthood was given to all worthy men, including his apostles. The Mosaic law said gentile people were unclean. After Peter’s vision, God showed him that the gospel was to go to the gentiles. The Lord governs his church - not the other way around. Have LDS leaders said things that need to be questioned? Absolutely. Doctrine never changes, but policy will as is needed, but only after unanimous agreement from the First Presidency and Quorum of the 12 Apostles, who will have each received personal witness from the Lord.
So yeah, they can be questioned or refuted - but I can guarantee the wisdom, experience, and direction of these 15 men, who have no personal agenda - as there is no selfish gain for them (most have left successful and lucrative careers to serve the Lord full-time, and receive a living allowance for their time, which is less than my brother makes as a school teacher) is going to be hard for me to even want to refute with only my own logic. But I can also tell you this - the Lord will NEVER let his leaders lead his church astray.

Now if a church leader speaks against what is written and exalts as high as Gods revaluation are they held accountable. Hi Jeff,
The only reason David talks about not listening to your ideas and posts is because you do not share the truth about what members of The Church of Jesus Christ of LDS believe.
Everything you put out there is taken out of context, or falsehoods, slander or lies.
I’ve listened to a few things you have said and all of it is completely taken out of context or truths mixed with complete lies.
It would be one thing to disagree with the Church of JESUS Christ of LDS. That’s cool and I’d listen to your thoughts… but when you spew lies and slander, it’s a different animal.
I won’t even take the time to hear what you have yo say about other faiths, because I’m pretty sure it will be the same mis-representations.
I’m happy you love the gospel and God. Too bad you can’t stop playing God and judging man who are trying their best to follow God.
Just a little thought… teach your straight doctrine and beliefs. Invite others to join… and stop telling other faiths what they believe in a deceptive slanderous way.
One thing that is so awesome is that Jesus Christ’s doctrine is a doctrine of Salvation not damnation. He loves all of His children. (The works of His almighty hands.)
If He is perfect love, perfect mercy, perfect kindness, compassion and goodness… He will not damn the majority of His creations to eternal suffering and hell all because they never even heard of His name.
That’s a Calvin man-made God, not a God of mercy.
That’s why I converted to and love the Restoration of the fullness of Jesus Christ gospel that’s found in the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS. All of His children will get to use their agency to choose Him. To learn who He is and decide if they accept His amazing sacrifice and love. It’s The Good-news to rejoice in… not a gospel of fear and damnation.
    Peace to you. ☀️

Now he sounds like an immature ignoramus. "Go away." Really? Can you say, intellectual bankruptcy? I refuse to believe he was in the realm of biblically literate, and I'm basing that on his comments about the Trinity alone. He's utterly ignorant of church history (for example, Ignatius' letter to ephesians was written around 107-110 CE, and it includes as high of a Christology as anything that came out of Chalcedon). Alexander fails to understand that the deity of Christ, as well as God's triune nature, are all established in the scriptures; and the church fathers worked diligently to articulate such a glorious biblical doctrine as precise as humanly possible. Alexander's objections are low tier, typical of the garden variety cultist. And his reluctance to defend his views just shows that he doesn't obey the word of God.

I am studying the Book of Revelation chapter 7 with the particular reference to an innumerable company of saints clothed in white robes surrounding the throne of God and Christ. I am curious about your doctrine of the trinity do you think there is a cloud or some kind of essence sitting on that throne that the saints are worshiping?? And with Christ there clothed in His immortal body of flesh and bones if God and Christ are the same entity when does Christ lose His physical body to become one with God again?? It still sounds like they are separate entities?? I am also curious about who or what ya'll picture in your minds eye when you pray?? Are you praying to some ethereal mass with out element or mass of any kind?? How do you exercise faith sufficient to know God and come to Him for salvation when you cannot even define who or what He is?? Your 3rd century doctrine of the trinity requires volumes of commentary to understand and even then it is unintelligible, just simply a mass of inconsistencies and incomprehensible statements when Christ told us we must know God to be saved!! The correct nature of God is simply stated in Genesis: God created us in His image and in His likeness; that statement does not require volumes to understand!!!! He is our Father, we are His children literally created in His Image with divine DNA to become like Him if we believe in Christ, Repent, be Baptized and endure to the end

@jmjm4860 I agree completely. I started here on you tube back in 2007 because I came across so many people saying words like... "Secrets that the Mormons don't want you to know about." I would answer... well that is untruthful. How did you find out the secrets they didn't want you to know about?? These things you call secrets and just things we find sacred. And people who are non believers in our faith...don't understand that when we share things that are sacred... and then we watch people do exactly what Christ said they would do. He said this when gave the Sermon on the Mount:
6 ¶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
For some reason... the words chosen here did not feel very upsetting. So I looked up what rend means.
      rend
      verb
verb: rend; 3rd person present: rends; past tense: rent; past participle: rent; gerund or present participle: rending
tear (something) into two or more pieces.
"snapping teeth that would rend human flesh to shreds"
      h
      Similar:
      tear/rip apart
      tear/rip in two
      tear/rip to pieces
      split
      rupture
      sever
      separate
      cleave
      tear/rip asunder
      sunder
      rive
      dissever
      archaic
      wrench (something) violently.
"he rent the branch out of the tree"
      literary
cause great emotional pain to (a person or their heart).
"you tell me this in order to make me able to betray you without rending my heart"
Now I understand why it is not so wise to share things that are sacred.

Can you explain why the Book of Mormon has a lot of New Testament scripture and verse that make seem like you are reading the Bible. When during that time the New Testament wasn’t even written yet, that way speaking or language or certain words weren’t even a thing yet. I’ve been studying it myself and keep reading it. The Bible says to show that you are studying and know His word. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15! If we study and study it and something still doesn’t seem right and doesn’t add up to scripture. The Lord tells what to do with that, to test and or rebuke it. As a Christian the more I study and read the Book of Mormon and D&C and Pearl of Great Price they all seem nice and have good words but something still appears confusing and fishy. God is not the author of confusion
And it’s seem to me, the I read them, makes seem like they were around before the Bible, and some parts of the Word of God are false. But we know as Christians, that the Bible is the Word of God and sharper then any two edge sword.. that’s why it offends people and make them uncomfortable when you try to compare it to anything else!

I love that Apologia is doing good work with abortion and the like. I think that the tone of this presentation was interesting but the fact is that the manmade tradition of sola escritura, trinity and the like are just that manmade creeds. That's why there are 50,000 Christian sects; there is no authority in the bible itself. Revelation and prophets are the basis of the ancient and modern church of the creator of the universe. Interesting that most of the same questions and critisms that you level at the LDS church could be equally leveled at Jesus as well and in one way or another were leveled by the pharisees etc. The reason that the Nicaean council was convened was to resolve the questions related to the nature of God and other weighty matters. God dosen't hold councils to decide what is true. He raises up a messenger to proclaim it. So no it is not accurate to state that the doctrine of the trinity was established by Christ. There is a long list of things that Apologia and my other brothers in Christianity get wrong as stated by God himself through his prophets. But David gets it right i.e. you're minds are made up. I am a convert to the Church. The truth about the Church and the Book of Abraham starts with a testimony of the Holy Spirit that God lives and Jesus is the Christ. Nevertheless, here is a small sampling of the academic research that is being done on the subject:
The idolatrous Gods of Libnah, Korash, and Mahmakrah have been identified as Gods worshipped by ancient Mesopotamians. Along with the commentary of scholars below, Hugh Nibley has shown how the names of these deities would be associated with the canopic jars depicted here in his book "An Approach to the Book of Abraham".
      Michael Rhodes:
The names of the idolatrous gods mentioned in facsimile 1 provide another example of the validity of the Prophet Joseph’s explanations. If Joseph Smith had simply made up the names, the chances of their corresponding to the names of ancient deities would be astronomically small. The name Elkenah, for example, is clearly related to the Hebrew ttt ‘el q?n?h/ q?neh “God has created / the creator.” Elkenah is found in the Old Testament as the name of several people, including Samuel’s father (see 1 Samuel 1:1). The name is also found as a divine name in Mesopotamian sources as dIl-gi-na / dIl-kí-na / dÉl-ké-na. Libnah may be related to the Hebrew leb?n?h “moon” (see Isaiah 24:23) from the root l?b?n “white.” A city captured by Joshua was called libn?h (see Joshua 10:29). The name Korash is found as a name in Egyptian sources. A connection with K?reš the name of the Persian king Cyrus (Isaiah 44:28), is also possible. [52]

I have watched dozens of David Alexander’s videos. Apologia Jeff as he calls him has not even remotely represented all of what David Alexander is doing. David routinely speaks of his conversion to Christ and his faith journey. He talks about his love for the Bible but of his disappointment in his journey for the truth. David always felt that the evangelical churches he attended lacked authority as demonstrated in the New Testament. He also talks about how he had been poisoned against the Latter-day Saints even to the point of holding signs and demonstrating in SLC against the Church, etc. But very far down the road 47 years later the wool was pulled away from his eyes. His videos often confront many controversial issues or doctrine of the LDS Church. David speaks Engelicalese if you will and knows how to engage them.

      Re: The Book of Abraham

Hi Kenneth. I know you addressed Pastor Jeff, but I'll bite. I am anticipating that your line of reasoning follows that, if the Book of Mormon testifies of Jesus Christ, Mormons are Christians, Joseph Smith Jr. was a prophet, etc. Having read the Book of Mormon cover to cover 10+ times, I can assure you that it does say many things about someone named Jesus who saves people who come to him, but only after they have exerted their best effort.
I can write a book about Jesus Christ. Even if the doctrines are in lock-step with the Holy Bible, that does not confirm that it is scripture and that I am a prophet. We *must* perform a more broad analysis than 1) Read book, 2) Pray to God and ask if it's true, 3) Accept its truth when I feel a warm fuzzy, and 4) Accept all the implications of its truth, including those which are contradictory to any existing standard of truth.

Jeff promotes Calvinism which is a 16th century cult. This group branched off the Christian church and made some very serious tweaks to the religion, including: they removed 6 whole books out of the Bible that didn’t agree with their new belief system, they denied the presence of Christ in the communion going against Christ himself and all the early church fathers (fairly easy to find their original writings online even for free), they believe God made many people irredeemable and this goes back to the point that they don’t know Christ. They have a caricature of Christ. They don’t teach theosis - in fact most don’t even know about it and the ones who do scoff at it. Whereas Christ taught us theosis is the entire purpose of this faith. You can take this and interpret his teaching through this historical lens and you’ll get closer to the truth. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy. I know he means well. He was just brought into a very deceitful organization that teaches things like “works are meaningless” Christ either chose you or he didn’t. That goes against everything christianity is.

I know you guys are trying to avoid sounding like you're attacking people, but as an ex-Mormon myself, I'm going to call it how it is. Firstly, my statement isn't an attack on Mormons as individuals, especially since I was one of them myself once upon a time, but it is an attack on aspects of their church's discipling methodology and their church's liturgy as a whole....
When you hear someone, whose Mormon beliefs have been refuted, fall back to saying, "Well, regardless all the things you've just shown me and told me which appear to be true and consistent within a biblical context, I know the (LDS) Church is true. I know Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God. I know that we have a true and living prophet with us today. I know the BoM is true...." etc..... They've been brainwashed. Plain and simple. The monthly fasting and testimony meetings "worked" for them. Everyone going up to the podium, repeating the same stuff for an hour, while in a humbled mental state (from fasting).... The brainwashing worked.
Thankfully, we don't have to fight the brainwashing on our own, with our words only. I know the Lord is with us, that scripture is a powerful tool of truth, and that God will do the rest. But if it were up to us only, it'd be a crazy uphill battle against people like this, trying to share truth with someone who's entirely unwilling to recognize it. The brainwashing is strong within the Mormon church.
For years after leaving Mormonism, I had an irrational fear of coming across Mormon missionaries. Years. I would get extreme anxiety, cross streets to avoid them, go to other sides of a store or even leave a store just to avoid them, etc. Mormonism, in different ways, creates some sort of emotional device within us that initially induces an internalized (often subconscious) fear of leaving Mormonism, and then turns into a fear of Mormonism (aspects of it, the practice, or the people) after leaving it. Like a pendulum swing.
On another note, for those Mormons who begin to see and believe in the true gospel and even want to repent and rely on the true Lord for their salvation, but are married and/or have families within the Mormon church, they carry with them the fear losing everyone they love. It's a threat to people who leave Mormonism. I've heard of bishops recommending divorce to wives of men who've left Mormonism. And as we know, divorced mothers in our society most often times get to keep primary control over the children, despite the father being an upstanding individual, and often despite many shortcomings of some mothers. And that has to be an emotional and spiritual trial like no other for any husband and father in that situation.
We know we need to love the Lord more than anyone else, above all else, to the point of placing Him even above family. Scripture tells us so, and it's true. But man, I can only imagine how difficult that is to put it into practice in such an intense way. With everyone you've loved more than anyone else on the earth, being held over your head like the blade of a guillotine, ready to destroy you.
Mormonism on the whole leaves me with a hurt and broken heart for the people who are in it. And disdain for the swindling, lying, deceptive processes that brought those people into it and keeps them in it.

Dick Anthony is a forensic psychologist noted for his writings on the validity of brainwashing as a determiner of behavior, a prolific researcher of the social and psychological aspects of involvement in new religious movements.
      Academic career
Anthony holds a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California. He has supervised research at the Department of Psychiatry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the Graduate Theological Union, and is a former director of the Graduate Theological Union's U.C. Berkeley-affiliated Center for the Study of New Religions. His research has been supported by government agencies including the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and he has frequently testified or acted as a consultant in court cases involving allegations of religious coercion or harm resulting from involvement in a religious group. Anthony has authored or co-authored a large number of scholarly articles on the topic and has co-edited several books.
      Involvement in the brainwashing debate
Anthony has characterized brainwashing as "a pseudo-scientific myth", and spearheaded efforts which from 1990 onward led to the general rejection of brainwashing testimony as unscientific in United States courts. Anthony asserted in the Washington Post that "no reasonable person would question that there are situations where people can be influenced against their best interests, but those arguments are evaluated on the basis of fact, not bogus expert testimony." Dismissing the idea of mind control, he has defended new religious movements, and argued that involvement in such movements may often have beneficial, rather than harmful effects. (Wiki)
YOU SAID ... The monthly fasting and testimony meetings "worked" for them. Everyone going up to the podium, repeating the same stuff for an hour, while in a humbled mental state (from fasting).... The brainwashing worked.
ABEL ... Fact Check ... The is a huge continuum between the testimony of a little child and a mature individual who has experienced many miracles in their lives ~ and in each case, the spirit of God witnesses differently to different people.
YOU SAID ...
ABEL ... blah, blah, blah ... you haven't done anything except make a false accusation = the red herring of brainwashing, a pseudo-scientific myth.
YOU SAID ... For years after leaving Mormonism, I had an irrational fear of coming across the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ. Years. I would get extreme anxiety, cross streets to avoid them, go to other sides of a store or even leave a store just to avoid them, etc.
ABEL ... irrational behavior from an irrational person. please seek professional help.
YOU SAID ... The Gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in His Church, the Church of Jesus Christ, (Mormonism) in different ways, creates some sort of emotional device within us that initially induces an internalized (often subconscious) fear of leaving God's Church, and then turns into a fear of the Gospel as taught in the Church (aspects of it, the practice, or the people) after leaving it. Like a pendulum swing.
ABEL ... sounds like a personal problem to me. You haven't actually said anything.
YOU SAID ... On another note, for those members who begin to see and believe that the gospel as taught in TMMC Christianity, Traditional Majority Mainstream Christianity ... For those that begin to "see" and believe that the gospel as taught in TMMC Christianity is the true gospel ~ and even want to repent and rely on the true Lord for their salvation,
ABEL ... writing as if the Church does not teach repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and a personal relationship with him and a total reliance on His merits for the forgiveness of sins is a pure misrepresentation of the beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ ~ that's exactly what we teach ~ that's exactly what we believe. This is a huge misrepresentation on your part.
YOU SAID ... but are married and/or have families within the Mormon church, they carry with them the fear losing everyone they love. It's a threat to people who leave Mormonism.
ABEL ... This is true is both directions. All peoples in all Christian churches live with the fear of losing their children and families to alcohol, drugs, addiction, an unfaithful spouse, and the devil.
YOU SAID ... I've heard of bishops recommending divorce to wives of men who've left the Church.
ABEL ... I am unaware of the circumstances of this advice, nor both sides of the story, so I won't comment other than to say the the Church, for decades, as long as I can remember has from the highest pulpit we have been counseled to love and forgive our children and spouses who break eternal covenants in hopes that they will return. As a matter of fact, it is often times a criticism of the Church that it is difficult to receive a temple divorce, because they have to go through the First Presidency. I've seen people who are divorced civilly who are not divorced from their temple sealing.
YOU SAID ... And as we know, divorced mothers in our society most often times get to keep primary control over the children, despite the father being an upstanding individual, and often despite many shortcomings of some mothers. And that has to be an emotional and spiritual trial like no other for any husband and father in that situation.
ABEL ... True ... in and out of the Church. My brother lived through such an experience.
YOU SAID ...
ABEL ... that's another 2-way street you are talking about. Evangelicals feel worse. Church Doctrine holds out hope for the back-slider. With Evangelicals, if you don't assimilate in this life, you are lost forever.
YOU SAID ... The Gospel as taught in the Church of Jesus Christ on the whole leaves me with a hurt and broken heart for the people who are in it.
ABEL ... We accept Evangelicals as our Christian brothers and sisters, but you guys treat us like the devil, sounds to me like the Evangelicals are doing the hurting.
YOU SAID ... And disdain for the swindling, lying, deceptive processes that brought those people into it and keeps them in it.
ABEL ... The Church ain't be doing no brainwashing ~ That is a pseudo-scientific myth. The people who are swindling, lying, and deceiving others are those who are making the claims of brainwashing.
and that my friend ~ that is you.
      And we forgive you.
      And we wish you well.

“Anti-Latter-day Saint critics repeatedly refer to the Church as a cult; and yet, favorably proportionate to other churches, individual cases show people who have freely and knowingly joined the Church and just as freely chosen to leave--hardly the mark of a cult” ...

Regarding wanting to have a 'debate' with a Latter-day Saint (such as David Alexander): How can you expect folks to debate with you when you are attacking their beliefs through misrepresentation, half truths, sensationalism, selectivity, superficiality, outright lies, bearing false witness, twisting of beliefs to make them appear strange, etc. What reason do you give them to think that you would be willing to listen to anything that they have to say? You are already convinced that their religion is of Satan and not of God, and your career and worldly following hinges on that conviction. What kind of intelligent conversation could be expected to come from such a discussion? I believe that it would devolve into a contentious discussion and I believe that the Holy Ghost will not abide those kinds of discussions.
Regarding the hypocrisy that you accuse David of having: Contrary to what you stated in the video, Latter-day Saints do not typically go around bashing the religions of others. We are in fact discouraged from doing so. David, as a new member, and given his background and his zeal, does find fault with his previous evangelical connections, but that mainly consists of him finding fault, understandably, with their criticisms and attacks on the Latter-day Saints, though I think he may get a little carried away sometimes in a more general way, but I think his heart is in the right place :) I also see a big difference between criticizing a faith in general vs criticizing the fact that members of a particular faith attack your own religious faith. You also mention the quote from Joseph Smith's first vision about him being counseled by Jesus Christ, regarding the other Christian sects in the area at that time that "all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.” It was a reference to the particular religious sects at that time and place in NY state in 1820, and Latter-day Saints don't typically associate those exact statements to modern Christian congregations. We certainly don't think that for the modern versions, that 'all their professors are corrupt', and generally look for the good in other faiths, including even those that aren't Christian. We see other faiths as all generally good and like to give folks the benefit of the doubt. When I see folks such as yourselves attacking the sincere faiths of others, including those that aren't my own, I criticize that particular practice but not your religious faith in general.
I recommend following the example of evangelical Christian Jeff McCullough and his popular "Hello Saints" youtube channel, where he engages with us in a positive, uplifting, and helpful manner instead of in a contentious, prejudiced, and disrespectful manner. Another good example is also an evangelical Christian: Steven Pynakker's "Mormon Book Reviews" channel. I have a lot of admiration and respect for both men, and I see both evangelicals and Latter-day Saints better served by these good examples.
