Obviously he only puts 10k down and puts rest in IRAs. Payment still gonna be 1500 most likely though. Glad I just bought a old 97 379 with a rebuilt Kitty Kat. Of the three options you gave, putting the 379 back on the road in my mind is definitely the best. The aftertreatment system on your current truck (as with all trucks in the same age group) is only going to keep popping up new problems, and also with the whole truck wiring harnesses, as you've witnessed. Trucks built in the last 15 years just aren't worth a bent pencil, just too much electronic systems not built rugged enough for a truck. Plus, in my opinion, the best outcome of putting the 379 back on the road would be not having to go to California! I know California loads occasionally get you home or loaded back out, but you have to admit it never pays enough for all the hassles. You'll find a way to make it work without.
By the way, I always look forward to new videos, and watch the whole video. My wife says "who would only watch half of his videos?" We both love watching them. Keep up the great videos and thanks, Dan.

I have a friend that has a 2yr old Pete that has had nothing but 1 problem after another with breakdowns. He said it's always something and he spent a week down in no where Utah in January in freezing weather and when they told him his truck was ready it made 100 miles and left him in the cold again! He made the decision to get his old Pete back on the road. It's a shiny custom length extended sleeper 2004 with all the toys that he was going to renew anyway so, $24,000.00 later, bumper to bumper renew excluding the engine that had 6500 miles when he parked it and he's back on the road with the new truck in Nashville for sale! Long winded I know, but they don't make them like they used to. He's been back in the old truck since May with 1 breakdown and that was a DOT cracked wheel thing. Keep on trucking! Thanks for sharing your story with us! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I'm not familiar with how the trucking industry works, but it would seem like with everything going on in the country right now, you could find someone that's financially distressed that's selling a gently used truck for a lot less money than a brand new truck. Maybe the value on used trucks doesn't work that way, but I thought I'd toss that out there.

Dan, I've been watching for the last 6 months or so. Great vids and great camera work and editing. I can sense your frustration with the new truck because of not getting the expected mpg's. In your videos that show you starting and shifting and moving slow in the lower gears, I hear the sound of the engine. You commented it is louder than the 379. I also see and hear the engine revs and sounds like too many rpms before gear changes. You may know, but maybe you've forgotten, the secret to good mileage is progressive shifting, keeping rpms down, and turbo boost no more than
12-15 psi, unless on a hard pull. Speed kills! Probably 55 mph is the basis for the best mileage. Tests have proven that. Every mph over that will cost you about 1/10 of a mpg. Much testing has been done to verify that. It takes approximately 250 horse power to move an 80,000 pound truck at 55 mph on level ground. Almost all trucks have excess power that is only needed for short durations, and keeping the durations short saves you money. Your truck is aerodynamic and most of your loads are also. Concentrate on keeping the rpms down, the speed down, and the boost pressure down. Do this for 30 days and surprise yourself how much your mpg's will improve. Consider a delete and gain even more. Who am I? Started driving in 1960, and retired in 2017. Drove for several different companies and started buying trucks in the 90's, owned over 50, mostly used that I leased out to other drivers, but drove many of them myself. Had C-15's in 379's grossed out that would do 7 mpg + by remembering who was buying the fuel. With the miles you drive in one year, improving your mileage by 1 mpg, (going to 6 to 7) at $2.50 per gallon could save you almost $6,000, and increase tire life and fewer oil changes and longer engine life. Invest that $6,000 in a money market for ten years and see how much better retirement can be. Ask the drivers getting good mileage how they do it. It's no secret. Best of Luck. You can do it!

    Good stuff Dan.
You can't blame the truck for this problem. Look what happened the Concorde when it picked up a piece of metal on the runway, the rest is history.
A bit of bad luck behind you, now maybe good luck ahead. Keep on keeping on!

Dan Id say get the old girl back out. But also at the same time, A new truck isnt bad. In my experience the def system as well as a lot of other changes that came out around the 2008 to 2015 time frame, have all sorta been ironed out as far as issues. In theory assuming the truck isnt a lemon, Ive been seeing brand new trucks running problem free. Id say 2018 is the start to when things got good. If you were to go new, Id honestly say get a 567. They have just the right classic look to it while still being as aerodynamic as the 679. Get it with an X15 at around 450 to 550 horse. I rand one with an 18 speed with a 550 cummins and averaged around 7-8 mpg depending on speed wind and load. Pulled great and honestly reminds me a lot of the older engines. It doesn't feel or sound gutless like the newer DD, MX, and International engines. Plus its something that can be serviced at any dealer. Also warranties are always nice.
Id still say get the old Cat running again but if you feel like getting new and having a clean slate, I feel a nice Black 567 would fit you well.

Our ambulance service has 3 trucks, the newest one with all the pollution stuff is costing more in maintance than the old ones. I would get the old girl running again.

Thanks for sharing your trucking experiences; quite an interesting option, that is, to reintroduce the old truck on the road and in your videos.
