    I appreciate that you mentioned that your house is "lived in" and the cleaning happens later. It is important for children to make memories and often it is through messy explorations!

      I have an old family circle plaque that says cob webs will keep,in rocking my babies and babies don't keep! I'm on my preteen grandchildren now time is flying! Hopefully I will live long enough for my great grandchildren!

    • @sleepynightowl1550
      @sleepynightowl1550 9 месяцев назад +7

      I could only vaguely make sense of what's written on your family circle plaque, probably because English isn't my first language. So I researched a bit and found it is part of a whole poem - and in combination with all the rest of the poem it made perfect sense to me indeed and I understood it.
      In case you wasn't aware of there being a whole poem about this, here it is:
      Song for a Fifth Child (Babies Don’t Keep) by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton
      Mother, oh mother, come shake out your cloth!
      Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
      Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
      Sew on a button and make up a bed.
      Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
      She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking!
      Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue
      (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby, loo).
      Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
      (Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
      The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
      And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
      But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
      Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
      (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo.)
      Oh, cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
      But children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
      So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust, go to sleep.
      I’m rocking my baby. Babies don’t keep.
      This poem first appeared in the Ladies’ Home Journal in 1958.
      Our chores and distractions may have changed a bit in the past 60 years, but the sentiments here have not…

    I'm from Northern Germany and when we grow kale it never gets covered and it never gets harvested before it had at least a couple nights of good frost. That's how it has been since my childhood. Kale is considered a winter green here and especially planted to be harvested in winter only. Funny how that is different in other parts of the world.

    Truly seemed to be carefully observing to see when you would need the next apple to cut! It takes longer when you include the children in the steps of anything like that, but oh such a blessing and memories made...not to mention the familiarity with kitchen work, helping others/mama, and much more more! 🙂

    Hi Bri you have a good attitude about running your household and with 7 kids your house is going to be lived in. As the 2 toddlers get older it will get better and is there a way to fence the garden I see why netting with electric would be problematic but at night it would keep critters out.

    This past spring I found that some of the kale stalks began leafing out again after I harvested the leaves before last winter in MN. That was a pleasant surprise. I chop up the leaves and flash freeze before putting them in freezer bags for use through the winter. About time to harvest and freeze again.

    You probably already know or do this, when you have the apple juice made, you can either can or freeze it and make your jelly later. And it's nice to make blended flavors, like apple and some kind of berries, or currsnts, rose hips. Especially if you have lots of apple juice and not enough of other fruit. 😊

    An equipment suggestion, steam juicer. I have a apple peeler (kids love this). Put the apples in the steam basket. The juice comes out of a tube. I can the juice. Pull the apples out and them are easy to mush for apple sauce to can. I also do grape juice.

    • @cynthiafisher9907
      @cynthiafisher9907 9 месяцев назад

      I think grape juice is really good from a steamer/juicer, but I don’t like the flavor of apple juice made from one. I use an Acme juicer for my apple juice and put it in my steamer/juicer to heat up a bit before canning. I can decant it easily from the steamer/juicer. Maybe it’s the fact that so much steam waters the apple juice down, or maybe it’s because it cooks too much, idk.

    Try 2-4 chicken breasts knorrs chicken bouillon 1 teaspoon for each cup broccoli and potatoes cook till tender then make a rue of 1 stick of real butter 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon each salt,garlic powder ,onion cook till just smelling garlic then add 2 cups water whisk just till thickened then add too soup cook 5-10 minutes more. I dice potatoes small bite size. Out works when you don't have cheese or cream on hand. You see I share with friends and families. My uncle is 95 and moving good so I share and my cousin's down the street from me so I always make a big batch to share 2-4 gallons. I use free gifted items so it just costs butter,flour spices. And sometimes I do use the stick blender cause some don't like the broccoli chunks.
