How to Make Fursuit Tongues and Teeth | Part 1

Alright, here's what I've recorded in terms of tongue and teeth construction! DEFINITELY not an all-inclusive guide yet; I haven't made that many since I'm still a new maker. But here's what I do know!
Hard teeth can be made with polymer clay, air dry clay, foam clay, resin, or 3d printed. Soft teeth can be made from fleece, minky, microsuede, spandex, or any non bulky material.
There is a lot of information I wanted to include in this one but couldn't, like the actual installation of the teeth/tongues, and how to hand sew the fabric teeth/mouth lining in, and go way more into detail on clay teeth shapes... so the next time I can film it, I'll make a part 2. But hopefully this will tide you over in the meantime!!

When she pointed out the direction of the minky fur I thought, “hey for a cat tongue it would be a neat lil detail if the fur faced backwards like a cats tongue!” And then she said that! It’s the little details that make a fursuit great! 😁😁😁

hot gluing the teeth directly to the foam is something i never considered, i always assumed you'd have to ladder them to the lining for that effect :o

Thanks Divonne!!! not the fanciest video I've made, but wanted to throw it up for the people who need it right now.
Just pushing the lining around the tooth after cutting it free is what a lot of makers do, but the next time I do that , I'm also gonna ladder stitch around that opening to hide the raw edge! hopefully it's not too tight of an area , and that I'll be able to navigate it haha
@@freckledcatcreations could it just be done by using the ladder stitch to sew the teeth on to the allredy glued on mouth lining?
@@skeet3943 yeah definitely! just make sure you didnt put hot glue on the fabric directly under where the teeth are, or else you wont be able to stick your needle into the fabric!

Ever since I started in the fandom,I've ALWAYS wanted to make suits myself. For some reason it rubs me the wrong way to have someone else have control over a really expensive thing if mine...but you... Are my dream maker....

Furry haters out there don’t know how much process, effort, and time goes into making a fursuit
yah i understand that they take alot of time and effort but i dont understand why people would buy it at that price like i know its worth that much but idk why you'd buy it for that amount

Well, It depends on what type of fursuit you are getting. Getting a cheap one will result in you getting a poorly made one, getting an expensive one will give you one made with the best materials, along with it looking really really good. Fursuits take weeks, or even months to make. They also cost a lot of materials to make. I have a friend who is a fursuit maker, and they really only ever get paid per fursuit they make. These are the type of people who make fursuits as a job and living. I’m pretty sure 1000 dollars per two weeks is reasonable- but that’s just my opinion
I used to think that too, but then I remember that some people buy $500 sunglasses, or $2000 wristwatches. I suppose if it's worth that much to you, you would pay a lot! We find these things super cute and love wearing them and taking pictures, so it's like... a really cute outfit! Kinda.

You get your clay and flatten it, and then follow the steps on making the other teeth

There's 2 things I've been struggling with though, fursuit muzzles and noses. Im getting slightly better at making muzzles but a more in depth tutorial would help a whole lot. But I have no idea how to make canine/feline noses :(
of course! i actually have a tutorial on how to make the face shapes, go check it out! it's a couple videos back. if you use reference images it should turn out ok!
and if you need help carving the foam, i have an old carving tutorial from last year, but i will also be making a new tutorial on that in the next few months!

I’m not a furry but I respect how much time and effort goes into making everything like suits and art. That could be cause I’m a cosplayer and do art myself, but furries are really interesting in my opinion, and really shouldn’t get treated the way they do!

you could also cut slits into the mouth lining if everything is already sown/glued down to be able to glue the teeth onto the foam
True! but if the liner is already glued down, it's hard to cut it and pull it up lol

As a amateur fursuit maker, I use hoop needles for sewing gums and teeth together on the suit.
i assume hoop needles are curved needles? i hav such a hard time holding those, they just flop and twist around in my hand and its hard to make them point the right way DX

Hey freckle! I need some help. Which sew should I learn to sew fur? I've heard that the blanket stitch is pretty and holds well, but I've never stitched before, and I'm going to make a fursuit head out of a Dino mask. (The way Dino kids do it)
Edit: one more thing, can I hand sew around the tounge instead? And if so, how do I do it? Same with the crease. I can't remember if you said in the video that you can hand sew the tounge, I'm a tad forgetful!
Rownii UwU I am not a professional or anything, but one stitch I use is the back stitch and it holds pretty well!

I do think you can hand sew the tongue! just dont pull too tight on the stitches or it will wrinkle the tongue up! Put your stitches real close together and take your time. The stitch you need to do depends on what you're sewing too! heads usually take a blanket or back stitch, the tongue might do well with a backstitch. stretchy fabrics need a zigzag stitch so they can stretch without breaking the thread. etc!

how do you decide whether to use fleece or clay when it comes to teeth?
(not a furry, just enjoy watching the creative process. it’s the same way i like watching speedpaints or doll repaints)
I leave it up to the commissioner if they want hard or soft teeth! On my personal suits it will probably all be soft teeth.

The fact that you can cut with the tip of the scissors easily 😳 i need to get separate foam and fabric scissors
omg yea!! i have one pair of scissors for sticky things (tape etc), one for paper only, one for fabric, and one for foam! all the different materials have different levels of wear and tear on your scissors.
Putting in the teeth the way you had the head positioned reminded me of how a dentist does teeth cleanings and surgery

What if you made the cat tongue velcro? Like how actual cats have scratchy tongues to clean their fur! I think its a clever idea for tecture reasons (if velcro even comes in other colors)

I recommend sewing instead of hot glue as it look much better and it makes it seem a bit higher quality. It does take Longer, but in the end it’s worth it. Also, if you’re hand sewing, I suggest you get little thumb pads that cover the tip of your thumb to reduce poking.
i agree ! back in this video i was pricing my heads at $450 each so I was using techniques that would suit that price point lol.

I love your tutorials on making fursuit pieces! I don’t plan on making any since it’s pretty hard work, but these are really enjoyable to watch! I am though interested in commissioning you sometime in the future; though I noticed you aren’t doing fullsuits at the moment. I’m interested in someday getting a digitigrade fullsuit from you of a simple character of mine, so when do you think you might open fullsuit commissions?
Glad you like them!! I'm currently making my first fullsuit. After that I might have enough knowledge to make them for commissions! No concrete idea when yet. Maybe the next time I open I'll take one body commission.(springtime)

I really want to make a fursuit, so this vid is helpful because the character I'm going to make has a forked tongue.
( which I assume is harder to make compared to a normal one ).
it is a little harder since you gotta do a bit of detail work!
the only thing i advise against, is using paper clay for teeth. if paper clay gets wet it will fall apart. Really only use polymer clay, epoxy sculpt, resin cast, plastimorph, eva foam clay, worbola, etc. That, and gluing any hard/clay based tooth just on top of the fleece/liner with hot glue is not rly enough to hold it on, i advise making a ridge on the bottom so part of the tooth can go under the fabric and then be glued in. I have seen WAY too many clay teeth fall out cause of this.
Oh, I mean if you seal paper clay then it'll be fine when it gets wet, I assume. I used to make homestuck troll horns and I never had a problem!
Good to know about the hot glue, mine seemed real sturdy but I did think about doing the 'resin claw' kinda way of inserting them. will try that next time!
@@freckledcatcreations ooooohhh, ok! I assumed u just meant paperclay and nothing else. Coating it in resin or something like plasticoat would also waterproof it. I always use the "resin claw" method to glue in anything that is sculpted and hard. I just dont trust any glue to hold them in

Tip: glue magnets in the tongue and head and you have changeable tongues!

or also you can just do that with velcro
