If you drive literally 5 minutes out of Hanley you see two huge retail parks , one mile apart . They have all the usual big names , cinemas , marina , restaurants , hotel , industrial units , water park , free parking and even a dry ski slope . They are packed with people . The areas where they are built are where the old steel works , a deep mine and other old industries used to be . They were transformed over 30 years into the retail parks . Along with the loss of the main industries pottery and mining , plus internet shopping and atrocious council decisions by all parties over decades ... Gives a better overall picture of what is happening to the old towns . The community feel , independent shops , pubs , nightclubs and buzz of the traditional town centre has been replaced with huge corporate retail parks . Very convenient , easy parking but souless with none of the personal community feel of the old towns . The problem they cannot or will not address is what to do with the old town centres. Yes there have been promises of redevelopment but the last big scheme ... the developer went bust after everything had been demolished leaving a waste land . I could go on and on about councils decisions and developers but I'd be here for days . Positive note ... the people are proud and amongst the friendliest . They have been let down badly by all political parties .

Well I blame the council for pedestrianising everything in Hanley and Newcastle to the point that you can't get anywhere near the town centre, let along park anywhere. Potteries Centre used to be vibrant and while I know the department stores hit hard times, they provided a hub for retail.

I rarely go into Hanley or Newcastle any more to shop as there are so few shops to shop in. When me and my wife retire in a few years we are moving out of the area to somewhere with a little bit of soul and good vibe. It's more to do with the managed economic decline started by the Tories in the 80s. First the steelworks and mines closed. later on the potbanks closed. Manufacturing sacrificed on the alter of the hospitality sector and the financial services sector.
Brexit was the final nail in the coffin. We're the first country IN THE ENTIRETY OF HISTORY to impose trade sanctions on ourselves by cutting ourselves off from the most lucrative trading zone in the world - the EU - which happens to be right on our doorstep.

Makes perfect sense for the brown envelope brigade. Also millions on one way systems. It’s a very murky place in the day and at night. Just to think hanley was a vibrant party town about 15/20yrs ago. Lack of funding for these places down to governments building their posh train tracks at extortionate prices. Unwanted carparks and just generally abusing public funds for their own back handers.

It amazes me that people are shocked by this? First you voted for an austerity government in 2010! Then you voted for Brexit and the grifter Boris Johnson, and this is what you end up with! Local councils lost 50% of funding from central government during this period! At the same time, taxes went up, so did the national debt, which austerity was meant to bring down! During the same period, the wealth of the richest 1% exploded! This has been the biggest grift of the working and now middle classes in history! People should be burning parliament, not mosques, and asking where has all the money gone! The average working family is at least £10,000 a year worse off than in 2008 but people will take to the streets to burn mosques? People in this country are sheep and don't look past the narratives being fed to them by the corporate, neo liberal controlled mainstream media!

As there is no revenue to the council from businesses the council has to increase the burden on the home owner and also cut services and there is no money for development. All the money goes into Jeff Bezos pocket.

Such a sad video , Stoke-on-Trent 30 years ago was a bustling busy vibrant city, with everything you needed or wanted now it's towns are so derelict that people stay away, I really don't understand why these buildings owners don't offer new small businesses a free rent for say 6 months so the businesses can get settled also the council could also offer free rates cause after the free period they would get rent and rates ,surely that's better than just letting these places rot and decay, and get taken over by homeless people and druggies who scare alot of people from our towns.
