    I went to Newcastle under Lyme back in the late 90s for a job interview. It looked the same then. Lots of closed shops and tramps smoking weed under the empty shop canopies. I took my daughter for an undergraduate interview at Keele University Clinical Education Centre back in 2005, she took one look at the town centre and said "I'm not coming to live here"..........

    This is a VERY misleading video, all those shops that are boarded up at the beginning are closed because they were forced to move out as the area is being regenerated or all knocked down for modernisation.
    Not only that its only showing empty places not the many shops still trading, its obviously done very early in the morning thats why there are so few people around and shops are closed

    Very sad but it's no worse then lots of high streets across the UK. Lack of investment on-line shopping cost of parking if you can find some were to park without getting a £60 ticket cost of keeping a shop in a Hi-st just some of the reasons why the Hi-st is dead and won't be coming back any time soon if at all.

    This is a typical example of greed.
    In the end nothing can survive.

    It's not as run down as many other towns and cities in Britain, just a victim of the change to shopping online.
    However, the longer those buildings are left empty, the worse they will become, and eventually will need bulldozing.
    Maybe that's the long term plan?

    I lived in Newcastle Under Lyme from 1988-2007 and saw the decline. I think the town centre is past the point where it could be saved by any plausible methods. I live in Preston now, and the locals slag off our town centre for being a dump full of boarded up shops. If I had the money, I'd send them on a day trip to Castle.
    From what I can see, all the redundant retail space is being slowly demolished as it empties. The old 60s arcade on Merrial St. (seen here in the opening few minutes) will be going next. I've seen lots of fancy plans about what it'll be replaced with, but I have my doubts about it happening. The old Sainsbury's and Civic Centre sites are still vacant YEARS after being cleared.

    Near where I live the ancient market town of Kingston upon Thames is still thriving. It is near to Hampton Court Palace and even has its own train station.

    So much for being politically different to neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent. That town centre looks like a replica of Hanley.

    What a sad walk. Internet shopping has killed local shops and outside shopping areas. What can be done. Those big stores could have indoor markets for sole traders, new start ups.. The council are still doing their hanging baskets. It could be lovely again. Come on council. There could be jobs for people in those shops.

      High rents and the rates are a killer and greedy owners of the shops, would rather see the shops closed so what do you exspect

    • @ruthsmith2367
      @ruthsmith2367 2 месяца назад

      @@9matsui agree landlords pushing rents up is a big factor. No one can pay them sort of prices so shops close. Landlords loose out in the end. I don’t know why they can’t see that 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I spent years in Newcastle Under Lyme. It went down hill when parking charges took over & retail rents became astronomical. Everywhere I worked or frequented, it was always the same issue. Greed & zero investment. Keep putting sticky plasters on pot holes & blaming the crack heads. Housing immigrants in hotels hasn't helped, it just increased crime.

    • @9matsui
      @9matsui 2 месяца назад

      You wait until the crime rate shoots up because the immigrants are just waiting there time and even now are making demands for this and that, moan about the food and free bus passes for them all, and not happy with there 4* hotels.

    • @gl4nn
      @gl4nn 2 месяца назад

      I'll tell you what's to blame for the decline of town centre shops and that's online giants such as Amazon. Why trouble yourself with running the gauntlet of begging drug addicts, bad weather and buses that never arrive when you can tap an app and get most things delivered the same day?
