  • While on the ground in Cuba, Breakthrough’s Rania Khalek sat down with Dr. Juan Jesús Luis Alemán. He is Deputy Director of the Moncada Clinic in Havana and a member of the Henry Reeve Brigade, a special medical mission the Cuban government dispatches to provide medical care free of charge in disaster zones.
The brigade began as a single unit after Bush turned down Fidel Castro's offer to send Cuban doctors to New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Aleman has served in Guatemala, West Africa during the ebola epidemic and in Italy after one of the world’s first major covid outbreaks overwhelmed the country in 2020.

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape - controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities - because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real-time.
People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.
We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

As a doctor, I find it amazing that Cuba is able to have better health outcomes than the US whilst under so many sanctions, while spending 1/5 the cost, and lacking the modern medical equipment that the US has. It goes to show that the US system is cruel and wasteful.

God bless Cuba and long live the revolution and may Fidel rest in peace well done. Mean while I curse my own nation for its inhumanity and colonialist mental condition.

Thank God for these Cuban doctors, God Bless them! This is the first time I'm learning about their attempts to help people in my city of New Orleans after Katrina! I was a victim of Katrina and lost everything, my son had a psychotic breakdown and my boyfriend died of pneumonia, all because medical care was not available and few doctors remained in New Orleans during the first year following the hurricane. I am absolutely outraged that the federal government of the United States FORBID these kind doctors from coming here to help us, where they could have saved lives, including the life of my boyfriend who died of a treatable illness!! Thank you Cuba for still caring about people even though the US has sanctioned your country for 60 years.

My heart goes out to you! The awful reality of the Katrina human sufferings was also those far right rich Christian churches of the greedy evangelical group were held shut, while other churches, temples, synagogues, mosques open their doors to those rendered homeless! You also have a morally bankrupt USA governments sending 5 billion nUSA tax money, a year to that apartheid state of Israel, so they can enjoy access to the best health care, free education, etc, while your poor Americans can’t even get basic access to public healthcare, welfare, education!

It is a sheer pleasure to listen to this doctor. He is a true humanist. The more people who think like him in the world, the better off the world is.

All of Rania's interviews from Cuba, medicine, education, etc. have been very informative. Please have more that center on average citizens there.

Viva la Cuba. Without the strangle hold of the U.S. of A. economic sanctions, it could show greater social advancement for its citizens, similar to how France made Haiti by its gangster rap and gun ship diplomacy pay France reparations from its gold resources, which caused great distress to the social fabric of Haiti. My opinion only.

Thank you for covering Cuba! I hope the U.S. ends the blockade but they seem to be stuck in sanctioning the world and sparking wars and unrest. Free Julian Assange and Leonard Peltier! Viva Fidel and Che! And especially Viva the Cuban people!!!

The South African were blessed with Cuban doctors who kept the public health services going after Mandela came to power, because many white or rich privileged doctors left for overseas, ( packing for Perth); or moving into private sector! These Cuban doctors went to rural areas, even learnt the local language to provide healthcare services to the very poor people! They even conducted health surveys, and epidemiological studies of their local areas to identify the biggest health service needs to enable proper budgeting and allocation of funds to expand health services to the vulnerable, who under apartheid had poor access to health services!

Well if you check the doctor's name tags at the hospitals in the USA you can tell we don't have doctors or good doctors most of them are from india pakistan Asian countries etc. The doctors in the USA only see one thing $

Thanks for bringing this topic, the US policy towards Cuba is appalling, irrational and vindictive. It's an exemplary punishment for those who dare to defy US orders.

The reality is that Cuba with all its USA forced sanctions still have better outcomes in terms of health indices, like infant and maternal mortality rates compared to the richest power house the USA! They even make their own covid vaccines, which are made available to poorer countries! Viva 🇨🇺

Cuban spies disguised as doctors? That is funny as all hell. That should be a mission in the next Splinter Cell game, where Sam Fischer has to infiltrate a hospital impersonating a doctor in order to interrogate a government official for information about a plot to perpetrate a new terrorist attack on the US.
