- The Summit of the Americas being held next month in Los Angeles is shaping up to be a humiliation for the Biden administration. In response to the United States’ attempt to exclude Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the gathering, leaders in Bolivia, Mexico and Caribbean states plan to boycott. And activists in Los Angeles along with others throughout the country and the hemisphere are planning a People’s Summit for Democracy as a counter-event to demand an end to U.S. aggression against Latin America and highlight the people’s struggles against injustice inside the United States itself.
Brian is joined by Manolo De Los Santos, the co-executive director of The People’s Forum in New York, and a longtime popular educator.

I'm starting to regain my faith in humanity. I was worried the world would side with America. The world finally woke up.
Its not that people were asleep or unware of what was going on its just they had no means of doing anything about it. Every time a small country tried, they just got smacked by the US and nobody came to their aid. Helpfully China and Russia will work with Latin America, Africa, and Middle East to form some sort of bloc security system.

The Summit of the Americas mechanism did not exist during the Cold War, when the US propped up right-wing dictators under the banner of fighting communism, especially Fidel Castro's brand of communism. Well-versed experts on the US policy toward Latin America remember that the Eisenhower and Nixon ordered the overthrow of Jacobo Arbenz and Salvador Allende because they were concerned about Arbenz and Allende putting their countries in the direction of Soviet communism. LBJ initially continued JFK's efforts to topple Fidel Castro but by 1966 he had the CIA put a stop to all efforts to dislodge Fidel because it was clear that Castro himself was too popular to be overthrown, which Richard Nixon (who had met with Fidel Castro in early 1959 when he was VP) came to accept.

Perhaps the USA has simply made their cold war policies an habitual response to anything that defies their uber-colonialist "free market capitalism"? Van Phuong : the miracle of Cuba is that in spite of being a poor country, the have amazing, advanced medical system. To produce five vaccines and several prophylactic drugs to help fight the Covid- 19 menace shows it is better to be poor, if what you require for living a healthy life is met. Why do you need limousines, private aeroplanes , huge mansions that remain only partly lived in? You need good schools and a good health system that works for everybody and healthy found and a house to live before anything else.

When Washington said, Argentina could not have not an economic policy open to the US and China, it was analogous what happened in Ukraine in 2013/4. When President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovich was deciding whether on an economic policy of joining the EU or Russia (which was by far Ukraine's largest trading partner), it was Putin of Russia himself who suggested, why not make Ukraine a special case with the ability joining both EU and Russia? Yanukovich agreed with it and Angela Merkel of Germany tentatively liked the idea, until the US and Brussels immediately shut down the idea. ... Having no other opportunity available and since Russia offered a better deal ($15B loan and discount on Russia gas), without a string austerity measures as did the EU (via the IMF) Yanukovich chose the economic policy to go along with Russia. The NED was prepared and it unlocked its forces on the streets of Kiev : the protesters in Ukraine took to streets in November 2013. This was incipient stage of the coup that occurred in Ukraine in February 2014 and the formation of a extreme right-wing government that outlawed Russian language and leftist political parties.

Why contries more particularly Latin Americans voted in favour of US in the UN general assembly when Russia started military operation in Ukraine. It is detrimental to their own freedom. They should have voted in favour of Russia considering the circumstances it faced similar to their own which was an existential threat.
I don't think that would have been prudent. Supporting an open invasion of a sovereign country nope.
I was a member of the first Antonio Maceo Brigade to visit Cuba in late December of1977. Fifty five of us visited, returningn to our birth place; I was young and ignorant then, full of confused emotions, a home-bred street wise man that had grown up in Hialeah working in warehouses, but I lacked all knowledge of my own history and what had led my family to Florida when i was 8 years old. That visit followed with more visits, changed my life. I agree that the only threat Cuba imposed to the USA then, as Manolo so eloquently mentions, was a moral one, which remains a threat today. Once the U.S. leadership embraces true morality and joins humanity in its struggle as a family of nations; once it starts seeking peace and social justice instead of "enemies" around the world, Cuba will stop being a threat to its imperial ambitions of world dominance #LiftTheCriminalEmbargo. #ReturnGuantanamo. Watched your video with great interest. I think we all know that when it comes to foreign policy, Democrats and Republicans are no different. Cuba has a better health care system than the USA, because it's universal and it's free, period. We also know that USA don't have friends, only interests and that means supporting racists in RSA or nazis in Ukraine, whatever is more conveninent at any given time. It's been a masteful performance by AMLO, in making the USA look at his Sembrando Vida program to help Central America nations reduce the migration flow. Glad you guys acknowledge the USA imperialism that dates back to Guatemala and Iran in the 50's, not to forget that USA tore down a democratic govenment in Chile as well. Manolo made an excellent point about Cuban vaccines. Sanctions by USA are inhumane, meaning against human rights and have done nothing to help their wish of regime change in Cuba and Venezuela (and Russia, lol). It's about time USA starts realizing they no longer rule AMERICA, let alone the world. Putin and AMLO, each in his own ways, are proving that right now. Biden is completely clueless, he thinks he still can win in all fronts. Only two countries voted against blockade: Israel and USA, MFERS. The biggest threat Cuba can make, is to prove to the world that they can be a great nation despite all sorts of hurdles put in their way. Manolo did make a case as to why they already have. I have never watched your program before but am happy to say I have now. I agree wholeheartedly that the US Security State with all of it's 3-letter Organizations, military industrial complex, has increased it's unfair sanction card powers to ensure it's pressure on almost all countries that oppose their wishes. The US needs to get it's affairs in order and stay out of the affairs of other nations. As an American I live outside of the country and see the bs of US foreign policy which is sorely lacking or does not exist except to increase it's own financial influence.
The US does not have money to fix crumbling infrastructure but can pour billions into Ukraine.
Unfortunately, most people in the US still believe the lies that the US military oversea is to policing the world for peace.

He basically wrote that US neoconservatives and neoliberals will oppose and attempt regime change to any nation in the planet that dares to have an independent foreign policy. Whether the targeted country is left, right, or center has no bearing. Fortunately I’ve noticed many nations of the global south are adopting a more self assertive foreign policy despite the risk of getting regime changed by the west. Excellent guest on your show

A point not to forget, US is the offspring of the Anglo-British empire, Brits aee just as awful if not more so because of their extensive activities for the past 500 years, they are the center player of the European crown. Being a protected land mass with a water barrier, After a while ,Britain, with its strong navy could shield itself from invasion and carry out conquest operations in Europa through bribes to gain access and supply points. It could be thought as an aircraft carrier of weaponry. It wasn't until 1940 when technology made it clear the homeland was not longer safe... the long range bomber made its appearance forever exposing to attack from the Euro landmass.
Those two, inspirational, brave men, have a great courage to express the TRUTH about the U. S imperialistic policy towards the Latin America and other regions / nations of the world. BRAVO!!!

The problem and weakness with Latin-America is that the 'Latin Nations' are not united under 1 flag as a large powerful nation with an army that has nucleaire capabilities and independent financial system. All Latin America nations are almost homogeneous with regard to cultural, religion, language etc. matters, so there should be no problem to unite under 1 flag. Political-economic independence and development in Latin America cannot be accomplish by individual nations....

I wonder how much of failure of USA's dominance of the summit is caused by situation of Ukraine? In other words: how much Latin America countries are couraged to turn their backs to USA when they see that USA is hands full in Ukraine, against Russia, and they are not the winning side? Of course that won't be only reason for change in this, but I am wondering would this same happen if there would be armed conflict in Ukraine with all the aspects connected to it, as it is now. Russian officials repeatedly said, that their war in Ukraine is war to end USA's world hegemony. And they say that repeatedly in order to courage as many as possible to repel against USA now (or prepare to do so). In same time, USA - according some sources - in first 10 weeks of escalation of the war, decided to send as much money to Ukraine as Russian military budged is yearly. And they are still losing.

He is so right but not only that, if they continue to treat Latin America like that, the more people will continue to cross the border into the US. The embargo on Cuba only punishes the poor. That's exactly what sanctions and embargo do. They never punish the government or those in the power.
The US tries to punish any country that doesn't treat the US like slave masters. The US should focus on the problems of the US, and there are many, and let Latin Americans decide their own destiny.

The friends of Meyer Lansky are holding old Cuban government bonds and they want cash for these bonds. Cuba has long ago stated that they are no longer responsible for the bonds. Investors took a risk and lost. However in the U.S. money talks and sixty years later these same bond holders still want their money. In a few months if the sanctions cause hyper inflation then they can be paid in U.S. 10,000 dollar bills that are not worth a buck.
