  • The Cuban revolution ended institutionalized segregation and gave immense new opportunities to the black population. But the fight against racism on the island is far from over, and the U.S. blockade continuously undermines racial equality.
While on the ground in Havana, BT’s Rania Khalek sat down with Pedro de la Hoz, head of the Aponte Commission, a special governmental body launched 12 years ago to address racism in the country. The commission led to the creation of a Cuban national program against racism and discrimination that President Diaz-Canel directs.

The revolution has been honest with itself from the very beginning, that is why it has lasted. While structural racism has been abolished by decree of government, Pedro recognizes it as a cultural phenomena that has been weakened but not totally destroyed to date. Recognizing this in their national dialogue, is what gives Cuba the ability to eradicate it. Like people if a country like the U.S. i.e., lives in denial of its contradictions, it is doomed to fail.

This is the honesty, integrity And humanity I associate with Cuba. I honor their ability to somehow hold together through all the hardship, dirty tricks and meanness of USA policy for 60 years. Cuba is a beacon of steadfast solidarity to all of Latin America, who continues to also suffer from USA policies.

Racism is one of the western warfare against peace. You do not need to be black and white to suffer from. Ethiopia is suffering right now because US is funding it.

Very good topic, interesting interview, most of what he said it's on point, however I do disagree with some issues, I see that every thing he's saying is from the communist dictatorship that rules the island, in other words he's with the government therefore I don't think he could represent the Afro-Cuban community, he said that Cuba is Afro eropean and that's BS , Cuba is a very racist country, the population is of European descent,African of African descendants, as well as som Chinese, and other small minorities. Once again great topic however he has been sent by the communist dictatorship
