Triumph is absolutely the most underrated rock band ever to record a song. I didn't truly discover them until recently. But as I'm listening to their catalog, I'm like "I know this song! And this one! And this one!" Over my youth I heard these songs in passing but they never got the serious air time, but they should have. 'Time Goes By' is a brilliant song. 1984 was a great year for rock music lovers: VAN HALEN's '1984'; SCORPIONS' 'Love At First Sting'; JUDAS PRIEST's 'Defenders Of The Faith'; IRON MAUDEN's 'Powerslave'; KISS' 'Animalize'; DIO's 'The Last In Line'; HELIX's 'Walkin' The Razor's Edge'; QUEENSRŸCHE's 'The Warning'; RATT's 'Out Of The Cellar'; EUROPE's 'Wings Of Tomorrow'; METALLICA's 'Ride The Lightning'; W.A.S.P.'s self-titled debut; 'DEEP PURPLE's 'Perfect Strangers'; et cetera.

Triumph is one of my all-time favorite bands. Many years ago, I went to see Rik perform solo at a bar in Cincinnati called the Blue Note. I got there early with a couple of friends, and we actually got to speak with him for about 10 minutes. He was so "normal" and he didn't have any of the conceited rock star persona that seem to plague many other musicians. He talked to us about our city, and how he enjoyed reworking songs for small venues like that one, and one of my friends talked guitars with him for a few minutes.
Later on, he went out and put on one hell of a show. He seemed really relaxed and like he was just out having fun. He can also play the crap out of a 6 or 12 string, and his voice was perfect that night. I'm a big Triumph fan, but I'd go see Rik Emmitt play solo again in a heartbeat.

One VERY powerful song from them was Ordinary Man. What fantastic lyrics! I loved Canada's 2 best trios, Rush and Triumph! Both bands were great live! Where Rush had Triumph beat was where Rush stated "If we can't recreat the music live with just the 3 of us, there are too many overdubs and we will not do it". So they learned how to play as many instruments as one can play at the same time. But this is about Triumph, so keeping to Rik Emmitts incredible lyrics, you need to include "Ordinary Man" with the rest. Gil Moore wrote the more mindless songs. Great drummer, decent singer but too many sex songs. They never would fit with Rik Emmitts lyrics.

Triumph was the first band that I really got hooked by and Rik Emmet was my first Guitar God. I always described it that he may not be the best at any one style, but he is the best at being able to play in any style. I loved how he had an instrumental acoustic piece on every album that showcased different styles, from Flamenco to jazz, to classical etc. Plus the inspirational, positive lyrics, great vocals by Rik and Gil and solid drums and bass. They’re still in my top 5 bands of all time. (Triumph, Iron Maiden, Y&T, Tesla and Rush) and I listen to them at least a couple times a week. My favorite songs by them are ones that aren’t radio songs.
