After nearly 10 years of playing in 4 or more piece bands, two friends of mine from university and I formed a trio. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had jamming, writing music, and playing live. It gives each instrument so much more space to fill so getting experimental and flashy feels encouraged and fits well. When playing live you also just have so much more physical space to move around without a 4th person plus their gear so we go nuts on stage and wind up the crowd. It’s also easier to signal changes to each other since we only have to communicate with the other 2 musicians. I grew up listening to Rush, ELP, Blue Cheer, JHE, Mountain, and Cream with my father so I have lots of love for the power trio and plenty of studio and live recordings to draw inspiration from. I know a lot of older musicians probably already figured out what I’ve just gushed about years ago but this is just a young musician’s perspective on being able to experience this sort of musical freedom for the first time. The crowd seems to love it too, we’ve got a good number of shows under our belt so far and we’re weaning out covers with our originals. Thank you so much for not sleeping on King’s X, I think they’re one of the most underrated bands of all time with great individual members who groove and harmonize like no others. 👍🏽
I love Stray Cats, but I'd imagine they'd be considered pop and not rock. That position to me is short sighted because they really played original rock. 50's style.
Must include Traffic, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Beck Bogert and Apice, Gino Vanelli, Gary Wright, Keane, Rory Gallagher, Pat Matheney, Genesis, Stanley Clarke, Johnny Winter, Fresh Aire, Crosby Stills and Nash, Stevie Wonder, Tangerine Dream, Jan Akkerman, Al Dimeola, and Fracaso from Mexico City in which I played!!
You forgot TASTE featuring the amazing Rory Gallagher, they killed it at the Isle of wight Festival...and then Rory Gallagher's own band after Taste broke up.
The Teraways Glad you mentioned Taste- not sure if it’s “power “ trio, , , but, amazing talented trio that played virtually any genre- and as for Mr Gallagher, , , well, it’s purely academic. Don’t ever forget when that cheesy American interviewer asked Hendrix “ how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world “ , and he replied, “dunno, you’d better ask Rory Gallagher “ , , , speaks volumes
Emerson Lake and Palmer is so underrated... songs like "Nobody Loves You Like I Do" and "Closer to Believing" were unbelievably good and overlooked by most of the music world.
From 1971 through 1977, they were one of the most successful live Rock bands even though most of their music was complex and very sophisticated. Emerson was the greatest keyboard player to emerge from Rock in the 1970's.
@@AaronKaiMCDNLD - Most people under 30 will know who Led Zeppelin, Boston, CCR, obviously the Beatles, but I guarantee you very few, maybe under 5%, will know who ELP is. That's what I mean by underrated. Also, how often do you hear their songs on the local classic station? We have 3 or 4 stations around here that are classic rock, I've never heard a single ELP song on any of them.
@Andrew Powell - I agree! That particular performance to me is the very best piece of Rush's live footage! In terms of the audio, the version that you can hear on the actual 'Exit...Stage Left' album is even better! :-)
Anthony M did you miss the word first? of course there wasnt " much power" it was the late 50's, not the 60's. the entire 60/70's era relyed on the template the crickets layed down in the 50's with the FIRST POWER TRIO
No, the Crickets originated the two guitars-bass-drums quartet, with Buddt Holly (olead vocal and guitar) Niki Sullivan (second guitar) Joe Mauldlin (Double bass) and Jerry Allison (drums) then when Niki Sullivan left, became the original power trio.
"The Buddy Holly Story" film omitted the second guitarist. There was also a famous publicity photo with just three guys. But they almost always had another guitarist.
One more power trio for part 2: *Budgie* . I read all the comments and no one mentioned them. They had a massive influence in Rock and Metal bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Van Halen, Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, Alice in Chains or Soundgarden. : )
How was Husker Du overlooked. I would also add Uncle Tupelo (80's), James Gang (70's), and Battles (2000's) though they frequently use guest vocalists.
Dada! The greatest band you've never heard of. Stellar harmonies, songwriting, musicianship, and a badass live band! They are soooo much more than Dizz Knee Land.
I felt pretty sure Rush would be mentioned, and I'm glad they were (and the same regarding the Police). But King's X is a sometimes forgotten about/ not thought of band. I'm glad to see them mentioned, as well. Thanks. 8)
Though a 5-man and then a 4-man group during the bulk of the 70s -- you missed a big one, Rick -- Genesis - officially a 3-man band with the 1978 '...And Then There Were Three...' album.
A lot to add - The Beastie Boys, Blue Murder, Celtic Frost, Chevelle, Dying Fetus, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble, Presidents of the United States of America, Prong.
Good choice with Blue Murder. Jelly roll is a fantastic song and I think John Sykes is an underrated guitarist. Also, Chevelle was awesome. Send the Pain Below is a killer song.
In addition to ELP, The Nice and Egg were great keyboard/bass/drums power trios, ditto the second version of UK. Jeff Beck has done great things both in the traditional guitar/bass/drums setup with Beck, Bogert & Appice, and the drums/keyboard/guitar setting of Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop.
A big reason why i feel like power trios are so good is because they have to compensate for the lack of extra band members by each playing hard enough to fill the gap.
I was shocked too, but The Jam definitely deserve more recognition. Bruce Foxton & Rick Buckler were a fantastic rhythm section to Paul Wellers incredible lyrical & musical talents. A unique combination.
I find it annoying how he bases some of his videos on trying to name everyone's favorite band or musician etc. Maybe because this was the reason I subscribed in the first place
Glad to see King's X get some attention. For as awesome as they are, they get kinda ignored. (Also, I love Russian Circles, glad to see them get a shout-out)
@@bonksvids Eh. I don't see how you can say they were as influential as Cream. Probably somebody already said this, but Steve Miller Band. I was blown away when I found out SMB was only 3 people! "Swingtown" in particular, sounds like at least 5 musicians!

Thank you for mentioning Triumph. I learned to play lead guitar by listening to Rik Emmett. He made simple pentatonic solos sound great! And oh man his jazz and classical chops are off the charts!
Triumph is massively underrated, and I believe that Rik is the best lead vocals lead guitar combo ever.
Agree! Rik is one of the greatest guitarists ever. Jazz, rock, blues, classical, you name it, he can play it. And play it well.
Have you seen his acoustic shows in the last decade or so? It's really good!
@@craighenry2351 Michael Sweet from Stryper would challenge him for that title.
@@mwhearn1 No doubt. Boston asking him to take over after Brad Delp died tells you all you need to know. He is one of the few vocalists who could do Brad justice. My alltime list of hard tock/metal vocalists goes
Thank you so much for not sleeping on King’s X, I think they’re one of the most underrated bands of all time with great individual members who groove and harmonize like no others. 👍🏽
King's X rocks! I need to listen to more of their stuff.
Yes! Kings X rocks🤘🤘
Agreed- I saw King’s X in Louisville back in the day. They were Amazing 🎸
Rick loves Kings X, literally 100% of the times I have ever heard them mentioned was on this channel 🙂
Have to say the omission of Stray Cats is very odd. They rank among the very very best. Still, a great video.
And then there's Phantom, Rocker, and Slick.
Spot on.
I love Stray Cats, but I'd imagine they'd be considered pop and not rock. That position to me is short sighted because they really played original rock. 50's style.
Spot on!!
Not power (rock) but rockabilly.
Glad you mentioned The Jam. A brilliant band.
Jules B I love the jam pity Rick only played a cover by them tho 😁
Must include Traffic, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Beck Bogert and Apice, Gino Vanelli, Gary Wright, Keane, Rory Gallagher,
Pat Matheney, Genesis, Stanley Clarke, Johnny Winter, Fresh Aire, Crosby Stills and Nash, Stevie Wonder, Tangerine Dream, Jan Akkerman, Al Dimeola, and Fracaso from Mexico City in which I played!!
You forgot TASTE featuring the amazing Rory Gallagher, they killed it at the Isle of wight Festival...and then Rory Gallagher's own band after Taste broke up.
The Teraways
Glad you mentioned Taste- not sure if it’s “power “ trio, , , but, amazing talented trio that played virtually any genre- and as for Mr Gallagher, , , well, it’s purely academic.
Don’t ever forget when that cheesy American interviewer asked Hendrix “ how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world “ , and he replied, “dunno, you’d better ask Rory Gallagher “ , , , speaks volumes
Stevie Ray Vaughan is undeservedly missed
Not really a true trio. Reese Wynans recorded and toured with them regularly. Also, they used a ton of session musicians in the studio when recording.
Neal B this was after 1984, but anything before was just the trio of stevie, chris, and tommy.
Heyyyyyy
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble were definitely a power trio. Before that, I liked his work with Bowie.
Alex Paclin Yes, Afraid so....mbody didn't mention SRV... Thanks Alex 😊
Kudos for the Russian Circles mention. So under-known.
Thank you for including Triumph .. fantastic live power trio.
James Gang, Ten Years After, Taste, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower Band, Mountain, and Govt Mule are all great power trios driven by great guitarists.
obbor4 Ten Years Later, not Ten Years After
You're right, thanks. When I first saw Alvin Lee he was heading 10 Years Later.
The James Gang is sooooo underrated.
Joe Walsh seems to dominate anything The Eagles have done live in recent years, for a reason. Life's been good to me so far. Got any gum?
Lest we forget, he's an analog man in a digital world.
80s underground trios that made grunge possible: Husker Du (most important), Meat Puppets, and Minutemen. Huge oversight.
Meat Puppets! Yes!
Dino Jr as well
and Agent Orange
Backwater, by the Meatpuppets, is a great song.
Strange Firehose was mentioned, but not Minutemen. They were both fronted by Mike Watt.
Dinosaur jr
100!
kyensa beh J Mascus kicks ass!
@@TiTiTiTiT - Me, too! :-)
Underrated? 🤔 please choose another word.
@@marla591 - you obviously don't know what that word means.
they sold 47 million records, are nine times RIAA Gold, how in the bloody hell are they underrated?
@@AaronKaiMCDNLD - Most people under 30 will know who Led Zeppelin, Boston, CCR, obviously the Beatles, but I guarantee you very few, maybe under 5%, will know who ELP is. That's what I mean by underrated. Also, how often do you hear their songs on the local classic station? We have 3 or 4 stations around here that are classic rock, I've never heard a single ELP song on any of them.
Thanks for playing Rush’ best song, Xanadu.
@Andrew Powell - I agree! That particular performance to me is the very best piece of Rush's live footage! In terms of the audio, the version that you can hear on the actual 'Exit...Stage Left' album is even better! :-)
Andrew Powell arguably. 2112 and la vila strangatio are up there
um wheres the FIRST power trio?? buddy holly and the crickets!
not much power there
Anthony M did you miss the word first? of course there wasnt " much power" it was the late 50's, not the 60's. the entire 60/70's era relyed on the template the crickets layed down in the 50's with the FIRST POWER TRIO
The Crickets had four members though
No, the Crickets originated the two guitars-bass-drums quartet, with Buddt Holly (olead vocal and guitar) Niki Sullivan (second guitar) Joe Mauldlin (Double bass) and Jerry Allison (drums) then when Niki Sullivan left, became the original power trio.
"The Buddy Holly Story" film omitted the second guitarist. There was also a famous publicity photo with just three guys. But they almost always had another guitarist.
TASTE featuring Rory Gallagher !
John Geary Heck ya!
I don't recall Rick naming Gallagher in any of his videos. Unless I missed something, I'm surprised.
Animals as Leaders
The Cure (started as trio)
Genesis (after Gabriel left)
Depeche mode (after Wilder left)
The Enemy
Génesis cuando se fue Gabriel aún estaba Hackett, y después que se fue Hackett nunca tocaron los 3 solos, siempre habían músicos soporte
I wouldn’t consider Depeche Mode a power trio, but just a trio.
Budgie are incredible!
Yes!!!
You mention fIREHOSE but not Minutemen?! Or Husker Du, Meat Puppets?
Or The Dynamite Buskers
or The Gurgling Goblins.
How was Husker Du overlooked. I would also add Uncle Tupelo (80's), James Gang (70's), and Battles (2000's) though they frequently use guest vocalists.
He's talking about GOOD bands.
Aiden Macleod just because you haven’t heard of a band, doesn’t mean it’s bad.
Agent orange, MDC
Thank you so much for this video. I fell in love instantly with King's X. I think they are my favorite band right now.
The 4th album, self titled is maybe the best one.
You SHOULD fall in love with King's X. They're a great band!
And that's cool Aquatic Highs - that's why music is an art and not a science.
Amen!
@@russwilson2305 I'm partial to Ear Candy.
TRIUMPH was one of the most talented power trios. TRIUMPH's guitarist Rik EMMETT is one of the most talented and versatile guitarists in rock.
Great harmony!!! Lead guitarist and drummer. They were great musicians too!
Shellac and Nomeansno are a couple of power trios that have been around for decades that are still killin' it.
Dinosaur Jr., Jawbreaker, Metz, Weedeater, alkaline trio, Sleep, High on fire...
@@CFJ.R dude, duos are crazy! DFA as you said of course, also Lightning Bolt is crazy, El Ten Eleven too!!
Paul-Michael Gobitas local h.
Bruh thank you so much Sleep and Dinosaur Jr. are two of my top 5
The James Gang
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
How have I gotten this far down in the comments to find SRV & Double Trouble?! Up-vote!
Good call.
Being a home grown Texan, I was waiting for him to bring this one up.
Thanks. 8)
Good old King's X. Still out there doing what they do :)
Kings-x totally under rated in my opinion right next to Rush! Check out KXM !
The absolute best!!!
One of the greatest bands ever.
correction: Green Day is from the East Bay (not Southern California)
He meant Blink for Southern California
Kingston Wall Gtr. Petri Walli ,Bass Jukka Jylli, Drums Sami Kuoppamäki one of the best power trios. check it out. in the 90's
Rory Gallagher very much missing here Rick!
Keith Sherry so Impossible. The video's cute.
Taste
Violent Femmes!! The finest power trio I know.
Add it up!
I like American Music, I like all kinds of music.
Heard them on Q107 tonight
The Adrian Belew Power Trio. The Outfield. Goo Goo Dolls. Winery Dogs. Dust. Mahogany Rush
Though a 5-man and then a 4-man group during the bulk of the 70s -- you missed a big one, Rick -- Genesis - officially a 3-man band with the 1978 '...And Then There Were Three...' album.
Wolfmother. Their debut album is brilliant (and at that time it was a power trio)!
Nerd moment:
That clip of Primus doing "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" at 4:19 was from the Dennis Miller Show, not SNL. Nonetheless, great video, Rick!
glad the jam got mentioned they are massive in the uk but practically unheard of in america
Some of us have heard of 'em! :)
Divididos! That's THE power trío in Argentina
Big Head Todd, at least at the beginning of the band's history, with their folks, jam band, blues/soul vibe. Great to see this genre covered, mahalo!
I love these new videos about rock culture
In addition to ELP, The Nice and Egg were great keyboard/bass/drums power trios, ditto the second version of UK. Jeff Beck has done great things both in the traditional guitar/bass/drums setup with Beck, Bogert & Appice, and the drums/keyboard/guitar setting of Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop.
Beck, Bogert and Appice. Short lifespan, but amazing
Cactus before that
A big reason why i feel like power trios are so good is because they have to compensate for the lack of extra band members by each playing hard enough to fill the gap.
True.
Beck, Bogert and Appice! Loudest concert I ever went to..
I am so stoked that you mentioned The Jam!! The brilliance of Paul Weller gets overlooked far too much.
I was shocked too, but The Jam definitely deserve more recognition. Bruce Foxton & Rick Buckler were a fantastic rhythm section to Paul Wellers incredible lyrical & musical talents. A unique combination.
Yeah and was sooo stoked he threw russian circles in there actually was shocked
I’m glad you included everyone from jimmy Hendrix to Green Day.
I find it annoying how he bases some of his videos on trying to name everyone's favorite band or musician etc. Maybe because this was the reason I subscribed in the first place
*Jimi
Glad to see King's X get some attention. For as awesome as they are, they get kinda ignored.
(Also, I love Russian Circles, glad to see them get a shout-out)
no Melvins :(
Rebels of Babylon no red hot chili peppers one of the most stronger power trio since hendrix and led zep.
Here's a few:
Husker Du
The Tea Party
Soda Stereo
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush
Supergrass
The Warning
Sleater-Kinney
Helium
High On Fire
Autolux
Nice pick on Sleater-Kinney
Tea Party, another Canadian trio.
Ole ole ole ole!!! Soda!! Soda!!!
SODA STEREO !!!!!!
Rory Gallagher's band was amazing as well
Uhh, are you forgetting Rod D’ath, his keyboard player??
Lou Martin was his keyboard player in that line up. Rod De'ath was his drummer.
@@flea1972 And that band was after Rory's power trio.
They were called Taste and every bit as talented and influential as Cream
@@bonksvids Eh. I don't see how you can say they were as influential as Cream. And while I would put Rory Gallagher up against Eric Clapton any day, come on, Taste's bassist and drummer (who were they again?) as talented as Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker? Don't get me wrong, I love Taste, but that's 99% because of Rory.
In Spanish rock there were also great power trio bands like SodaStereo, Enanitos Verdes. At the moment they are the 2 bands that I remember.
Can you do a video about progressive rock? I really want to see you try that.
Zhora Chetverukhin MARILLION!!! 🤘🏼
Death grips , soft machine , king crimson (red era) , atomic rooster, badbadnotgood, john Mayer trio, pat metheny trio, genesis (80s), minutemen.
I was wondering about Genesis.
Bbng is a 4 piece now
Wow. Soft Machine was a trio? Cool
Keith Emerson's first trio was The Nice. Another good band of the 60's.
Probably somebody already said this, but Steve Miller Band. I was blown away when I found out SMB was only 3 people! "Swingtown" in particular, sounds like at least 5 musicians!
You left out Husker Du, Concrete Blonde, Meat Puppets and Violent Femmes. Also, a very new power trio that I didn't expect to be on your list, but who I definitely recommend checking out are Press To MECO. They just put out their second album and are doing something very unique.
They expanded to a 4-piece, by adding a dedicated bassist, for a couple of albums, but for the rest they were a trio with Johnette Napolitano handling lead vocals and bass.
@wildcatter63 WOV was a 4 piece at one point 5 piece.
Concrete Blonde. Good call on that one.
dinosaur jr you dork
John Maloney husker don’ts
Ive watched two of your vids now. This one and the best bassist one. Your forgot the VIOLENT FEMMES both times. They are legends
my favorite "rock" trio of all times in any case is Morphine, but I'm not sure if a trio with a saxophone instead of a guitar could be considered a power trio.
One of the most unique bands ever.
absolutely - one of the greatest pleasures of my adult life was seeing Morphine in '95 ...
Ok that sounds pretty sick though
2 string slide bass!
When Rick mentioned King's X, I quite literally yelled "YEAH!!!".
