NEW Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance Review: No V8, No Fun? | 4K

  • Rory hops aboard the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance, and this one is a little different. The car trades the twin-turbo V8 in the previous model for a 2-litre four cylinder engine and an electric motor. It makes big power; 680hp to be precise. But is it as good as the previous car?

Having electric motors only would create significantly less driver interaction, no shifting gears, no real sound at all and adding the additional, bigger electrical motors to create that kind of horsepower with enough batteries to support it for a reasonable range, especially when driving fast, would still add quite some weight, therefor reducing handling. The engineers probably would love to just put a V8 into the car, but regulations don't allow it.

🤷 you know why dino juice is going to run out in about 50 years anyway. There's no denying global warming is not real. The way polar ice caps are falling apart is not good.
Also the reality is 350bhpish is really the most you can safely deploy on the road. Making cars lighter and agile and doing clever stuff with three/four cylinders is going to prolong the life of the ICE. Fat ass V8s and V6s are dead. IF a manufacturer can come up with inline 6s that can deactivate say three or two cylinders as an 'eco' fuel saving/generator option. Then offer all 6 as the sport/race mode. Combine that with say a hybrid system where say 50-60 miles of range is possble. Then the engine does'nt have to burn fuel unless you're on a long journey or on a backroad.
That's probably the way forward. My money is on BMW acheiving that and not producing a shit car at the end of it.

As a previous owner of two S205 C63 estates with the 4.0 V8 BiTurbo this is just not interesting for me at all. When I switched from the C63 to the C63S estate I've noticed that the C63 was not about being a tenth quicker on the 1/4 mile. It is about giving you the feeling about driving something truly special in your everyday life. And this kind of feeling was 100% connected to the V8 and the Sound that came with it. Especially the first one not equiped with the GPF had an absolutely amazing sound which put a smile on your face every day I was starting up the car.

There is a reason the battery is tiny. It is a HPB battery with direct cell cooling designed for a strategy named "always on". This means the batterys function is 100% for performance - being able to drive fully electric for a few miles is only a bi product. Every time you brake, it recuperates power, which it then can release upon acceleration in an endless cycle in theory. It's F1 tech.

Plus, I think it does look good. On the other hand, what has become its USP is gone. Its just unfortunate that this car’s predecessors have become such legends and garnered such popularity, such a drastic change in the way it goes about things is gonna look like sacrilege. This is AMG’s first go at it, so can we give it benefit of doubt that it can’t be perfect straight out of the box?
Let’s just be glad AMG tried to make it work. If they do another one, it needs to be lighter and the sound needs to be improved. For now though, the C43 is the one to have. It has the same engine, costs less, is much lighter and still incorporates some F1 tech in the form of the e-turbo.

I don’t understand why Mercedes did not put the new 2023 S63 AMG Engine in it. (V8 Hybrid Motor). They could’ve just detuned it for the C and could’ve saves tons of money with reusing the engine.

This is like you look forward to Henry Cavill as Superman only for them to decide no. In spite of the fans wanting that very thing.

by the park i go to, there's a base model previous gen c63 v8 that purposely downshifts while driving in a speed limited 25 zone. you can tell he is just playing with the throttle and gears to hear the roar. i can guarantee that owner will not be 'upgrading' anytime soon lol
i always wanted the v8 cars but with AWD, and now they added the AWD and put in an I4, 4 cylinders might be good for emissions but I have never heard one actually sound good. If MB had to do make their entire C class range 4 cylinders, why is Audi and BMW selling 6 cylinders in their M-lite and full M or RS cars still?
I bet some higher ups in MB just want to be able to say the F1 tech development is in use in consumer products. They will learn the hard way.

Absolute honest review ... Had the same experience in it ... we go for another brand this year, because also the technical assists makes a looooot of problems and many c-class owners try to get rid of their car now...

Great review Rory. Very nice objective even though it is clearly not a car you love.

So at 05:05, did you mean microphones on the outside to speakers on the inside? Or does it have some speaker stuff on the outside too?

You can probably buy a used 2018 C43 which already had the all wheel drive system and tune it to have the same power as this and have a ton more fun. I loved the way my C43 sounded before the European regulations dialed it back after 2018. I now have a 2021 GLE53 since I have kids and it just doesn't sound no where near as good as that C43 did and forget a C63 or E63 from same time or earlier lol

I had secretly hoped that this car would turn out to be way better and less disappointing than everyone has expected after it’s first actual road test but after watching the video this is truly the worst of all possible scenarios….. isn’t insanely fast as you’d expect from 680HP and 750/lb Ft torque, doesn’t sound even as good as a regular A45 AMG, doesn’t put its EV power to use as a torque fill generator, and can be caught flat footed when the battery runs down after 10 mins of hard driving…..to say nothing about all the complexity and weight that has been added 😔
At this point it feels like it was just designed to get everyone to accept a full EV with open arms after experiencing this pile of 💩
