I am a Queenslander. I hated watching a game with a send off so early. I disagree that we’ve seen worse ones this season. I also disagree about the “slip” argument. I feel as if he leant back at speed to give himself more room to get the pass off before getting smashed. You’ve got people like Benny Elias saying pretty boy Reece is going to get destroyed by Madges team and I think NSW had it drummed in them all week to kill him legally. I think if play silly games you win silly prizes. The only way teams have figured out how to handle Reece is by rushing him and hurting him. The exact thing Penrith did to him and injured him for.

Just a point with cobbo on the bench...if you have a standard bench and a back goes down you're in strife unless you can activate no. 18. Put an appropriate back on the bench though and you will always have the cattle no matter the situation. If you activate 18th man with an outside back in your 17 then you've got the boxes ticked automatically.

How many more hits to the head and failed head assessments can someone like Reece be expected to take, before people start talking that way about him? Player's careers are at risk here, and people are upset that 'it ruined the game'? WTF. That has to be a send off every time if we are going to take this seriously. Too many more hits like that can put a player's entire career into question. Origin or not, the brain doesn't know the difference. That 'slip' is nothing. Watch the footage again. in Walsh’s minimal origins games, he has been targeted heavily and illegally:
    - tackled in air last year
    - flopped onto with shoulder to head by JAC
    - flopped 20 seconds late by TPJ after a penalty has been called
    - attempted coward punch by JAC
    - shoulder charged to the head by a edge defender rushing in rendering him on unconscious
If one of these things happened to Cleary, you lot would call the police. There’s a clear plan to take him out of the game, Madge even had the pre-meditated get out of jail free card at the press conference - He broke his jaw this year and that wasn’t a sent off???

10 in the bin? Not to be overly dramatic, but if Sua'auli'i did a full flying shoulder missile at Walsh's head and killed Walsh, 10 minutes would be a joke right? So if there is a degree of actual death (people do die from that sort of force to the head) then penalties have to be imposed that will deter other players from doing it again in the future.
If someone attempts to murder someone, you don't say "owell, he missed with his gun, all's well that ends well" . No, you impose penalties harsh enough that will discourage other people from exhibiting that action later on.

Massive respect for you boys but this is such a bad take and probably the first time I strongly disagree with your takes, how can you disagree with the send off just because it’s origin and Walsh was slipping, obviously the game plan was to take out Walsh and Sualii got the tackle wrong didn’t attempt to wrap n smashes straight in to Walsh’s head like a high speed motorcycle crash bloke flew like superman! Saying he shouldn’t of been sent because it’s origin is basically saying you should be able to knock people out n not get sent off all of a sudden you have the advantage because the opposition loose there strike power take responsibility that your guy fucked up n cost you the game it was a horrendous tackle end of if Walsh fractures his skull there suallii probs dosnt play league for a good 10 week at least if you want to put on a shot n change the momentum do a Liam Martin yeah the game was ruined but that’s the tacklers fault not the referees. If that’s not a send off in Origin then what is ?

6:13 sorry guys. Don’t agree with 10 minutes. Just because it’s origin doesn’t mean all the rules are a little more lenient. A player hits the head of their opponent, with their shoulder, it’s a send off. No matter the colour of the jersey, that was a send off. I understand it’s a split second decision by the defender and it may not be intentional, but it’s still a send off because the shoulder contacted the head. My grandsons’ under 8s game is refereed to penalise contact with the head. The rule is there for a reason.

If JS gets to play on after knocking out Walshy for the game, its going to open up the path for cheap shots.
Also, doesnt matter how tall anyone is. And though he was sliding, he barely lost any height in the slip. Wouldnt have made a difference, still would have copped it in the head.

Lads! Been really intrigued by the fact numerous people have used the example that if that was someone else on Teddy, you’d want them sent off not given 10 in the Bin, because you’re without your fullback and a back rower would have to play centre. As a New South Welshman, 10 in the bin would suffice, due to the slip and it being origin, not to mention the fact it would most likely be Critta to Fullback, and due to losing Teddy to foul play we would activate our 18th man as Queensland did with Kaufusi, and Burto would’ve filled that centre roll. Just surprised that everyone has seemed to forgotten if the shoe was on the other foot we would’ve been able to utilise Burton. Regardless, still a nasty result to that tackle and hope Walsh doesn’t miss too many games, Love the show fellas

  • @SlaintheMhath

Rated a send off in any game but here is a fix, he gets sent but you can replace him from the bench, loss of a bench player meaning 13 on the field and 3 bench.
Toads activate 18 so they still have 13 on the field and 4 bench. Toads have an advantage but the game doesn't suffer.
He still fronts the MRC and gets whatever punishment they decide.

I appreciate that you're trying to find a compromise to uneven contests (13 v 12), but let's put your suggestion through a hypothetical role reversal. I'm guessing you're from NSW.
Wind the clock forward by one year (2025) and we are now playing SOO Game 1 at Suncorp. Within the first few sets of the game, Cleary does a kick down field. At the same time, a Qld forward comes through and absolutely cleans him up. Clearly is badly concussed and can no longer play. NSW get to activate their 18th player.
Qld player is sent off, however QLD is allowed to bring on another forward on to replace the sent off player. Of course QLD will only have to play the remainder of the game with one player less on the bench.
Now NSW have lost their star half back for the rest of the game!! The 18th player just happened to be a utility player or a forward.
Now do you still feel NSW got a better outcome, especially when it was foul play from QLD?
Even if you add 10 min sin bin time into the equation, I'm still not sure if QLD completely lost out in the long run.
I'm reckon NSW supporters will still feel they got the royal pickle from this compromise.

I know rules have changed completely since you were playing but I feel like they’ve ruined origin as players are a little more conservative and I trying to prevent any issues from arising on the field. I just don’t think that rivalry is still there even though the game had some big hits I just feel like there’s not enough of that niggling and trying to really belt each other than just tackling hard and playing to the rules.

Maybe a form of hawk eye to gauge the height of tackle and if the player slides and lowers themselves into the tackle it could help make better outcomes whether it's penalty, 10 in the bin or off ya go. This has only become a discussion because he did it in the 7th minute, if it was anytime after the 50th minute blues wouldn’t even be arguing the grading. It’s a clear send off every minute of the game. Suaalii chose to risk a big shot early and the responsibility is on him to get it right.

Hey boys, In some rugby union competitions like Major league rugby (USA) and super rugby Pacific (nz & aus) red card means u lose the player for 20 mins and can replace the player. But also a big part of that rule is that when u are given 10 on the bin, the bunker watches and can upgrade to red card of they believe it deserves a red. do u think that rule specifically can be added to nrl, so the ref can give 10 on the bin and the bunker can upgrade to red if they deem it as a worthy of red. I think it's a rule that takes the pressure of the ref and they can make the sin bin call straight away and gives bunker time to factor everything in e.g Reece falling as suaalii hit him. I think it was send off worthy but I really think it's a rule nrl can bring into play so there's not so much push back on the ref

Appreciate the highlight at the beginning of the show fellas.
My thanks is probably going to get drowned out though in all the comments this go around since there are so many more than usual right now. Good problem to have right?!
Anyways, I appreciate the level headed approach to what is a pretty nuanced issue for Rugby League, and how you guys discussed the issues. I have seen some pretty dishonest takes at this point about the whole thing so it's nice to know that some people will still acknowledge there were 3 parties that got damaged in all of this, not just the guys on the field.
And for everybody banging on the refs on this one, they did everything 100% correct, this is not on them. Joe hit Reece in the head, period, it's a send off, it's a big shame for Joe and Reece, no way those guys wanted to miss that game. And Joe was clearly amped up, there was a hit up that Joe took a bit before the incident happened, and I think I heard the impact here in the states when Joe did the hit up, dude was ready to go. It was right after the lifting penalty early in the game. Anyways I digress, not the refs fault and good on AK and the bunker for sticking to their guns on this one probably knowing what they were fixing to do to the game and how much and affect it was fixing to have.
They need to change how the rule works. And not just for origin, some folks have said JUST origin is where they need to change the rule. No, it needs to change in the NRL too.
    Solid podcast guys, as usual.

Not sure what the solution is - obviously its a nuanced problem, but as a QLD fan, the whole game lost feeling after the 7 min mark as it felt like the outcome had already been decided. Origin is usually an edge of seat experience but not this time - it just didn't feel the same (getting the W was still good though). I feel like both things can be true - the send off was the correct call for what happened (Walsh was lucky not to end up much worse of) but the game did suffer because of it. That being said - it is a pretty rare occurrence for things like this to happen, so once the media storm calms down I doubt anything will be changed.

The rule is the problem, because the same offence get's a different level of punishment depending how early in the game it happens. So it's a rule that can never be consistent in-terms of the punishment. What should happen is: a) the player is out of the game b) the team is a player down for 10 mins c) after 10 mins another player can come on to bring the team up-to full strength
