This is the sort of car I'm excited for. Nice and basic, it'll come down in price on the second hand market (eventually), it's a good sign that EVs are still moving into the non-luxury market.

One thing that shocks me is that for all the technical staff on LTT they don't seem to understand horsepower very well. A gas car produces a PEAK HP at XXXX rpm. HP falls on a very steep curve that is proportional to torque and engine speed. An EV has a very linear power curve that is often simply limited by the battery chemistry. So when you look at area under the power curves an EV is able to deliver much more energy to the wheels than a gas car despite displaying the same peak horsepower rating. So moral of the story. Stop comparing them directly. A 200HP EV of the same weight as a 200HP gas car are vastly different in performance and the EV will be much faster.

I bought a Bolt EUV, partially because of videos like yours, people are not rushing to buy them, so I got a good deal. The car itself is great, particularly the headlights, and the auto dim/bright feature. The car is quiet, comfortable, and I've taken it on a 400 mile road trip, no problems. The car looks like what it looks like, so I never understand criticism about how a car looks. The car is VERY quick. I went up the infamous "Grapevine" Tehon pass over the mountains north of Los Angeles going UPHILL, a 6% grade for six miles, at 85 MPH, passing every other car. So I don't get al;l the negative stuff, but I presume you realized what a great car the Bolt EUV most drivers. I put a set of Michelin "Cross Climate" tires on it, they are winter tires, ice rated. If you take the time to go into the settings, you can turn off the beep when the car self locks, or turn off the self locking feature. I'm glad you discovered you can adjust the sound system, go in and adjust the settings to punch or diminish the treble/bass, etc. Also, you're testing the Premier, top trim level, so the price is very good for a premium trim car with EVERY feature, including the self driving that actually WORKS !!
So I'm glad you decided the car was "worthy" of your consideration. Enjoy !!

One thing I'd really like to see in car reviews like this because I think it can inspire positive change is discussion of the turn signals. The new Blot EV and EUV ditched the amber rear turn signals of the previous model in favor of brake lights that double as turn signals, which studies have repeatedly shown is less safe.

This probably plays right into my confirmation bias but I'm so happy to see Alex happy about this car! I got my 2022 Bolt LT at the beginning of October (2022) and it's been a great car so far! I totally agree that all their models should come with at least adaptive cruise control which would've been nice, but the normal cruise as it is is actually pretty good. It keeps great speed and has near instant response to changes if you need to fiddle. I definitely enjoy it being more of a "car" than a "computer on wheels" that other EVs seem to go for in terms of looks. It just feels like it was designed by someone who ACTUALLY uses a car every day.
I can't say the same for everybody, but pricing was actually pretty good for me. Looking around I think I managed to get mine pre-markups, but the dealership I bought it at had a manufacture's rebate which put sticker price around $36K (USD). I chose to put a down-payment so managed an out the door price of around $31K (USD). Still the most I've ever paid for a car, but that price to get into my first ever EV was awesome! Especially considering the state of the car market right now.
I just really hope the Bolt is a huge success as I think it absolutely has the potential to show other manufacture's that they can make less-luxury style EVs that anyone would be willing to consider as their next purchase.

One thing, though, I'm a bit puzzled by the comparison to the Honda Civic concerning adaptive cruise. Isn't the main reason the price point on the Bolt is so much higher that it's an EV? Adaptive cruise seems incidental. I assumed the 2023 Civic must be an EV as well given how the comparison was presented in this video, and was pretty excited about that $24k USD starting price point. I had to look it up (not being observant enough to see the 2.0L for the engine in the image within the video, though, as someone not that well-versed in gas engines, I guess it's not too surprising I'd miss that without more thought) and since it's not I don't know if that's a really compelling comparison. Now I'm left kind of confused about whether or not this is a good price for adaptive cruise. But I'm a major beginner in such things, so that could be more the problem here.

As long as you don't get it stuck in park, it should be many miles between problems, and it's generally the driver's fault if you get stuck in park and can't get it out on your own. I plan to order one next Spring for my wife to drive around town. I never plan on driving it across country or charging anywhere but my garage. Just good, reliable run around car. The simpler the better. I will choose the base model as stripped of goofy, useless crap as a car can be today. My current go to car is a 2001 Cherokee. I've been getting by just fine using my motorcycle for daily transportation with only 3 days in the past year that I needed a car a the same time my wife was using hers, so I think that an EV will work for me just fine, and I've come to realize I don't need WRX performance in a car (I like it, but I don't need it) and I'm willing to trade off for reduced maintenance. In contrast, there are lots of Bolt EUVs available for around $35k USD (plus a $5k dealer markup - ugh!) which is around $10k cheaper than the cheapest Ionic 5 (or Tesla 3) I suspect that the Hyundai dealers are also looking for a $5k markup so the difference is probably even greater.

Newer years better have better craftsmanship. I've never had to take a car into the dealer for as many things, had a Leaf for several years with no issues whatsoever and will be going right back to one ASAP. In less than a year of owning the Bolt has needed an axle replacement, due to a known issue in manufacturing, radio/usb ports replaced, for the same reason, and that's on top of the battery stuff.
Needless to say all very expensive, as well. If GM/Chevy made these vehicles to not have tons of dumb issues it'd be great, but.. is it that hard to make a radio that isn't junk and fails in a couple years from manufacture? And of course most of the repairs aren't covered (or could be done yourself for 20 minutes and $50 of parts, but the dealer wants hundreds if not thousands for it.) USB port replacement is literally one screw and a few clamps, dealer wanted $600 for that alone. Positively and utterly absurd. Glad some folks are happy with theirs but I can't be the only one having so many issues that clearly come down to cheap parts and poor craftsmanship.

For everyone else, US power grid is mostly natural gas, but varies a lot, it's only 50% fossil fuel where I am, thanks to hydro and nuclear. Places like California with a lot of solar or texas with a lot of wind will vary a lot how renewable they are day to day, hour to hour.
Traction batteries are actually very recyclable because they are huge, making the investment worth it (cellphones by contrast just don't contain enough material to justify the economies of scale). There's a good video from jerry rig everything on one of the many companies getting into it. The biggest obstacle rn to recycling ev batteries is that there's just not enough dead battery packs to recycle yet, as most EVs are still on the road. I mean they only became popular in the last 10-20 years and the EVs that have gotten totaled from accident tend to get their batteries sold to DIY people due to low cost (just check out eBay for ev battery packs)
As for the child labor thing, thats about cobalt mining in Africa (the DRC specifically) and is the one thing really worth mentioning. A lot of EVs are moving to LiFePO4 chemistries that don't use cobalt for other reasons (cost, lifespan etc) but not using cobalt is a big advantage. I think the Chevy bolt is still using NMC but don't quote me on that. I would also like to say though, that I'm not sure why it's the responsibility of EV manufacturers all of the sudden to force African governments to crack down on hunan rights violations, no other industry that uses cobalt, like oil refineries, get criticized for their use of cobalt. The DRC has an effective monopoly on cobalt, and to the credit of EV manufacturers, they do seem to be moving to non-cobalt chemistries

Yeah we love ours. Perfect if you work from home/remote and need a city driver and California driver. The shorter length is the best in class for city parking, most EVs too long for no good reason.

Given the amount of hate and misplaced anger in the world these days, driving an an anonymous EV that nobody will take notice of isn't the worst thing. You're far more likely to draw unwanted attention while driving a Tesla than a nondescript but still very solid Bolt

"We only have a 65kWh battery"
I wonder what is the battery size for standard model 3 and it's price..... and it's 'actual' range in reality 🙃

What do you mean uninspired?! Your nuts. Everyone that owns one raves about it and I rented one for months before buying one and I always got stares and everyone asking about it that it’s so cool looking and nice inside.

The US starting price is currently $27,200, not $34,495.

The ioniq comparison makes sense in theory, but the way the car market is right now, the two cars aren’t really comparable. Here near me, the cheapest ioniq 5s available start at 60k while bolts can still be found for around 33k

Had the same reaction, of "these cars aren't competitors, the ioniq costs nearly twice as much!" when I saw that in the video. You'd think LMG of all places would understand that MSRP does not always determine price.

4 years ago I was in an On star commercial (on star sinking car) they offered me a car at the “GM Executive Price” whenever I decided to buy a car. Because of this video I’ve sent a request to check one out, if they can get me that price, which by my measurement should be $33k USD for a fully loaded car, then I’d think this is a no brainer

Too expensive. The world is burning to the ground, nobody is going to be able to buy used EV's new drivers are going to be poor out of the gates immediately. Kids won't be able to do shit in the future.

Considering Canadian petrol prices, you'll easily make up the 15k CDN within the car's lifetime.

It's good to see a car with some regular buttons though. I'm sick of just seeing one screen that controls everything. Just keep it simple.

You should do a review of the Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona EV, both are direct competitors to the bolt and nissan leaf.

One thing that nobody ever mentioned to me about this car was how it automatically turned down the cabin fan whether you used a voice function (onstar, Google assistant, etc) so that it's easier to hear. Then it turns back up once you were done with the call or whatever. That's something I really like about mine. Oh, and the HVAC is downright impressive on the bolt.

55kW is a dealbreaker. That's unacceptable for anything larger than a 30kWh pack. It's less than 1C!!! What the hell?
