    Great review! you answered a lot of questions I had about the gh5. One note about crop factors, you have to multiply the f-stop by the crop factor, just like the focal length. For example a f2 becomes a f4. The panasonic 12-35 f 2.8 acts like a 24-70 f 5.6 . this is why the speed booster "in my opinion" is necessary accessory for mft cameras used for video production.

      2 years later, on the verge of doing exactly the same thing in a similar set of circumstances. It's cheaper now than then, and still a solid choice. I bought a GF-1 when they were fairly fresh and it remained the best mirrorless for 2 or 3 years after I bought it. Obviously everyone does them these days, but only 3 companies did, back then. Still pleased with your purchase? :-) 10 years later and 40k shots later, still pleased with the GF1 - but the 720p video doesn't cut it at all :-)

      This review is so great. I've been watching alot of reviews and comparisons between this, the A7sII , A6500, Nikon D550, and canon 5D, and have been leaning towards the lumix for what I need to shoot. I would mostly use it for commercial footage, weddings as well, music videos, and youtube. Which camera would you say is the best for the price. I also think the Dual SD cards are awesome and the menu is easier to use then sony. Ive had the a5100 for a year and still haven't tried everything out on it yet.

    dude I absolutely LOVE my GH5! I've had it for about 3 months now and feel like I have only scratched the surface. Such an amazing work horse! I film wedding sin 4k and put out my final render at 1080 with no problem! I agree on the low light issue. This is not that great in low light. I was filming a wedding a couple of weeks ago and was at ISO 3200 and there was way too much noise. I ended up dropping down to 1080 at 24fps so I could use slower shutter speed (1/50) just to be able to bring the ISO back down to 800/1600

  • @healyeoin
    @healyeoin 7 лет назад +28

    That was a fair review I think Matt! I think if someone likes/needs high ISO for their wedding films then the GH5 isn't the right choice and the a7S is probably the only choice. I feel some a7S shooters go way too high on their ISO just because they can, to the point that dark scenes don't look dark any more and loose the mood. I don't stress on ISO anymore, even though I shoot 90% GH5 now. If a couple really want to get married in darkness, then their wedding film from me will portray that. Of course I'll advise to try and get some lights in there, but if they want it dark, they'll get it dark. ISO 1600 with fast glass and some lights covers every wedding we shoot now. For the batteries, what I've found is shooting 4K60 will literally halve the battery life. 4K24 is much easier on the power, and you should get about 2 hours on a single battery. I also think the amount your asking the IBIS to work impacts also, so if you're handheld v monopod/tripod mounted, you're draining fastest too. Well done, some amount work goes into a 50min review and you knew a lot about the GH5 quirks having only shot with it once! Fair play.

      Exactly! That's exactly what I thought when i saw this footage! He films at night trying to make it look like day! In my opinion it looks awful. Funny and interesting, but awful. Everything 2-3-4 F-Stops over what is natural. That way of course you need an S2...

    On M43, most people use metabones speedbooster with fast canon or nikon lenses, to gain also an aperture stop. ;)

  • @DSP1337
    @DSP1337 7 лет назад +2

    Actually, you can shoot 5k (called 6k) footage or 5.7k footage (called 6k photo mode) with normal lenses. You just have to crop the image to 16:9 afterwards. But what is important to know is the fact that the 5/6k footage is pretty much the same when downsampled to 4k as the original 4k video. If you need to crop or stabilize some footage, this is the way to go, but when downsampling to 4k or even 1080p, the 5/6k recording gives you exactly the same as the internal 4k because it is already a downsampled full sensor readout.

Until u dropped that whole low light bomb, that absolutely blew my mind... I currently shoot on a canon 700d and to be honest I feel low light wise the GH5 isnt even an upgrade from it. Hi Matt, great video at 14:00 you should know that you can set one of the custom buttons to save your current settings. I put this function on the trash button and learned to hit it whenever i hit the off switch, annoying I know but there is a decent work around.
    You can also setup sleep mode to save battery life and I highly recommend a speedbooster with 1.8 sigma zooms or 1.4 primes, most native mft glass is useless for receptions.

    You are amazing, thank you for your tutorials, and for sharing information unbiasedly, especially in a field in which more stuff seemingly equates to being better at the craft, bigger is more valuable, and a ridiculous amount of equipment just makes a client feel as if they are going to get a better product in the end. As a GH5 owner, I have encountered countless moments of "But a bigger sensor is better" and "Panasonic can't compare to this or that", given, the GH5 has room for improvement, as any other DSLR in the market it has its high points, and its low points. I am highly appreciative of the information you share with us, and for reiterating that more is not necessarily better. In my opinion, the future of Videography, and I will even go as far as saying Filmmaking, lies in less is more, but as with anything, it's hard to change other people's minds when what they know is challenged by new technologies, and new paradigms.

      as long as you're not clipping the highlights you can always bring it down in post. pushing the iso up lowlight and than bringing it down later in post will actually give you less noise than recording dark areas with low iso

    • @much9384
      @much9384 7 лет назад

      legendp2011 not true again, you can’t get the same look in post with 8bit codec. 8 bit codec has to be cooked inside your camera to get somewhere near the look you are going for. I have c100 and with 10bit it’s a struggle :/ I prefer less work in post especially when you can take out your memory, put inside your laptop and check it :)

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 7 лет назад +1

      +Marcin Kowalczyk.........c100 only does 8 bit (even when recording to an external recorder in proress it's still only 8 bit). I own the a7sii and when shooting in s-log 3 I have had no issue with bringing it down in post (as the luminescence colour information is evenly spread when shooting in log mode). I agree getting close to the look you want is best, but underexposed noisy shots can look bad

    Best review of the GH5 I've seen. Coming from yourself as a Sony user you were totally unbiased. Gave credit where credit was due and grilled it for its flaws. I'll be upgrading from the G85 sometime in 2018 and will definitely go with the GH5.
    Also Matt you can leave the camera on and set the it to "sleep" at its shortest interval and when your ready to shoot again just press the shutter half way down and it comes back on with the same settings, while preserving battery life. You can on the G85 anyways, so I'm assuming the GH5 is capable of that as well.

    Great review but one thing is not clear enough. With 4/3 sensors not only have you to multiply by 2 the focal length but also the f/stop. For example a 15mm f/1.7 is equivalent to a 30mm f/3.4 full frame. Forget fast lenses on 4/3 sensor cameras, it’s very difficult to get a cinematic shallow depth of field unless you add a speedbooster which makes the setup bulkier and heavier though. Apart from the sensor size, slow lenses are not handy when shooting in low light scenarios.

    This is a sure top 3 GH5 review. You did a great job. Thanks Matt. Now I'm going to sleep, dreaming about A7SIII...maybe it will have a tilt screen like gh5, 4k in 60 p and 10 bit at the same price :-).

    Probably the best "comparison" I've seen. And fanboy-proof. Very nicely done!
    I find camera debates rather ridiculous . Cameras are just tools. How you tell a painter to use this brush over another?
    Every camera has its own character and every artist should choose based on his unique workflow and preference.
    In this case I'd buy both so I could have more options.
    Thank you for your time and precious info.

    I know this is an old one, but well done Matt on presenting such a balanced review. So much fanboi behaviour going around which I just do not get. A camera is a tool, purchase the one that suites your needs. I migrated from the Sony A-Mount to the GH5 over a year ago for the massive bump in 4k video capability, stabilisation and huge reduction (generally speaking) in lens size and cost. Funny that I did exactly as you described in the video after trying to shoot some low light scenes with the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8. I purchased a Voightlander 17.5mm f/0.95 lens which largely did the trick, however image is soft (which I don't mind in some scenarios) and nailing focus on moving targets at that f-stop can be a pain. Have also since discovered my passion for night sky time lapses which also isn't a great match for the GH5. Here is hoping the GH6 has Dual Native ISO! Speaking of which, anyone who has invested significantly in MFT glass and needs low light performance should consider the GH5s. You loose the IBIS of the GH5, however it is a big upgrade on almost every other measure (particularly low light performance) .

    What I do is not use the C presets.. I assigned the front FN button by the lens to go to video formats.. and then assign each format how I want.. so 4.22 10bit is the .mov, 4K 60 is one .mp4 4K 24 is the other and another for HD... this way you push the button, select the format and BAM... now you are shooting 4K 60 and the settings didn't change between power ups.

    It was a perfect video to convince me not to bother with GH5, since both video AF performance and low-light capabilities are important to the style I am making videos. I am using an A9 for 4K video, and its video AF is mind-blowing. Power zoom lenses are important to my style, too, and GH5 has not any PZ video. Matt could have used a PZ28-135/f4 on his A7SII, on the other hand.

    Your low light comparison : The lumix 12-35 f4 is a 24-70 f8 equivalent... not the fastest lenses you can choose. Take an Olympus f 1.2 and it works much better!

    Thanx a lot for this video, Matt. But one question - why do you need so hight exposure while u filming with a torchlight's and dancing people? For me its to much bright.. and its start to look like a home video, not a filming with a cool cameras. And its start to loose a sharpness and have a more noise.

    I absolutely loved this review...BUT... I am still confused about whether to go for GH5 or Sony a7rii XD. I absolutely love sony and considering that 98% of the weddings around me take place after 7:00 PM so sony is definitely a savior. But the GH5 has so many cool features -_- ..... But sony heats up and we already have higher temperatures here, i fear it will cause a lot of noise anyways(perhaps) .... Leaving my confusions aside, great video Matt! It helped me understand the value of a lot of features in both the cameras.

    Great review! However, I really feel your low light evaluation of the GH5 may steer people away from a camera that is completely capable of handling the majority of low light situations sufficiently.
    I know you were quickly showcasing a few tests and they weren't necessarily setup to emulate practical situations, but you definitely made the GH5 look a lot less capable than it really is when properly setup. Furthermore, I don't think a lot of wedding shooters will be asked to film a ceremony in conditions as extreme as torchlight. Obviously, the GH5 won't ever compete with a purpose built low-light camera... but you can approach poorly lit situations a lot more efficiently to optimize the sensor's performance while keeping noise to a minimum.
    Take your test at around 38:00 for example. You were exposing your scene at F4, 1/50 and ISO 1600. Let's face it, If you're planning to shoot a wedding on a M43 camera with a F4 maximum aperture lens, you don't understand how to properly mitigate the inherent limitations of the platform. Throw on a proper setup like the ridiculously common Sigma/Metabones combo and you instantly save yourself 3 and 1/3 stop of ISO and are able to shoot the same scene at F1.2, 1/50 and ISO 160 (low ISO video limit is 200 in reality). You can regain yet another stop by switching to a 360 degree shutter angle if the movement in the scene permits you to do so. Boom, acceptable low light performance (by most shooter's standards*) and shallower depth of field have been achieved.
    The GH5 is undoubtedly capable of handling the majority of low light situations sufficiently with a proper speedbooster and lens setup, in my experience. Again, awesome review. Just wanted to share a few thoughts : )

    i think one point that is always missed in the low light argument is, you should always think about depth of field. so in your test you had both lenses set to f 4, that means that if you wanted to get the same look the gh5 should be closer to f2.8. on FF it is really hard to shoot at anything lower then 2.8 because it is just to hard to keep focus (i always though f4 was about the sweet spot). i use the sigma 1.8 with a speedbooster. that setup alone almost makes up your 3 stops difference in exposure. so if you are using the a7s2 you are probably using a 2.8 most of the time, if you use my setup you can make up those 3 stops. personally i hate the full fame look. i hate seeing a video where you can see the focus plain. remember this isn't photography. good video though. i really wish that these crop sensor lenses would just put the equivalent focal length and equivalent f stops on lenses so it is easier for us to understand.

    Very nice and solid review. I shoot with my trusted GH4's and they have the same downside: low light (and an even bigger crop). Low light is a big problem. But other than that: great value, rock solid, amazing features. I cannot recall a single crash or problem with them on location. First quarter in 2018 I'll get one GH5 and sell a GH4, looking forward to many happy years of shooting. And if 2018 is like 2018 business wise for me I'm thinking about a EVA1 :)
