5% oyster shell?
Sup Willy, I have been wondering about adding tryptophan, it was old info (20years +) from old growers. They stated that tryptophan is converted to psilocybin in the fruit..Is this true or old misinformation? and congrats on the scholarship that is pure positive man...much respect!
Hey I'm a long time fan since willy myco days. What do you think about spirulina as a nutrient?
I’ll see you there.
I can’t express how grateful I am for how much I have learned from this channel. This is another great example of a video jammed with amazing info. I have been wondering about the nutritional content of substrates and how to achieve the right recipe for a while. Thank you 🙏

don't get me wrong, the info is amazing. I don't think he is a tool, or his content is stupid by any means. I just wish the mask didn't alter the audio quality, to the level it does.
@@deadlyicecream1 why does he wear this mask by the way is there something wrong with his face? I'm thinking some kind of weird tattoo?
Animals don't eat straw they lay on the straw. They eat hay. You are a good dude. Thanks for all the help
I use coir and verm hydrated with warm water straight out of my tap and the results speak for themselves. Never had any fruits lacking potency or any unhealthy ones. This is just my input and what works for me. I always say do what works for you
Not lacking potency compared to what? Nothing? LOL
Thank you for all your help the q&a last night helped me so much.
New sub here, finally someone that knows what up so much useful info in your vids
thank you for always sharing your incredible knowledge and time willy
I for real need to up my substrate game after watching this 😂. I'll have to check out that scholarship too, I happen to be going to college for cannabis sciences and mycology 😁

Ditto 110% I need to do the same I would love a full canopy
Oh yeah? Where do you go to college for mycology or cannabis science? I really hope you don't say online!
@@frogmanpipes9561 Just a local technical college, I do have some online classes for my academics but everything cannabis related has been hands on. I'm technically going for Extraction and 3rd party testing of products
@@potphysicist6431 so what you are saying. Its not a real college. not a real degree. Basically a waste of time. Because there isn't a credited college in the United States. That specifically teaches either or. Both are minors. Not majors
I didnt know u before but now im fascinated by your work and by mycology itself. Thx for that
You should mention Willy's Blend in every video. I've watched 10 vids and just now finding out and only cause I watched this vid til the end and I'm glad I did.
Dammit I meant "SHOULD" I fixed it.
Respect using cups as your UOM!
I have had the best results with a simple whole grain brown rice and verm spawn to coir substrate at a 1:1 ratio. It works for me cause it colonizes fast and works good in my monotub.
What batch sizes are you running?
Thank you for sharing Willy! Your videos have helped me tremendously 🙏🏽🍄🙏🏽
Thx for doin whatcha do, you've been a big inspiration in start up of my channel

Do you use gypsum(CaSO4) and powdered oystershells (CaCO3) at the same time in a substrate or are they replacements for each other?
Thanks Willy...always appreciate your vids and great to hear about the blend. I'm going to try some pans in it.
hey Willie thanks so much for your content , quick question ... if adding the oyster shell what ratio should I be using ?
For things he didn't mention the amount or more, Im sticking with the 5% or less rule. And since Im trying this out Im going with maybe 3-4% and start there and see how it goes....You can always increase later if necessary but better to be cautious at first.
@@sielecassharpe678 also hunting this answer. I will try at 3 percent.
I think you have straw and hay mixed up. Hay is much more nutritious and is what is typically fed to livestock as a food source. (in my region it’s alfalfa or clover) and straw (wheat stalks after the wheat has been harvested ) is used for livestock bedding and animals can eat it but it’s typically used as a fiber source and to thin out high nutrient stuff like oats or for weight loss. note is straw is almost 100% gmo and has revived typically 2 doses of roundup (glyphosate) In a typically season along with a broad spectrum herbicide.
Hay would be good option
No, he means straw. Don't use hay (yes, it's more nutritious, but no, don't use it).
@@gogogaga7441 why not use hay?

How much of the oyster shell and bat guano do you recommend adding? I'm sorry if I missed it, but after checking twice and looking it up online I had to ask.
less than 5%
He only says 5 percent for gypsum
You're the man willy the scholarship program is next fucking level.
Thank you Willy you are a inspiration 🍄👍❤️

CVG plus worm casting. Best simple subs ever.
How much worm castings do you add and how do you pasteurize it?
Thank you for the video 👍
I did not hear what is the ratio for oyster shell ?
Should we add oyster shell powder AND gypsum, or is it one or the other??
Thanks Willy my wife is ordering some right now
Thanks for the info bro.. I’m new and using your all in one blend..
Dear Willy, I am charmed by your personality and the content of your channel. I am very happy that with my passion I just came across you. I really hope you can find the time to answer my elementary question. Should the additives you mention be added before sterilization, or mixed with already colonized grain?
I'm sorry, I am not Willy. But I will give you my input. You add the nutrients of choice to the substrate material (such as coco cior &/or manure, or straw) BEFORE pasteurization . The only thing thatyou need to do after the PC is inoculate the bag. I feel certain that if I have given you poor advice, we'll hear about it! I'm new to the business & am by no means an expert.
Hey myco-family ! How much cups(liters) of water should we add to the mix (for example for 1kg). I calculated that we need around 380g Coco, 380g Vermiculite , 50g Gypsum, 50g Oyster Shells, 10g dry Coffee Grounds, 100g Wheat Straw(pellets), 20g Worm castings, 10g Bat guano... all I`m missing the the exact H2O content to be added to the mix ! :)
500g verm and 500g coco would need 16 cups of H2O.
For 380g You'll need 12.16 cups or 2.880ml of water.
I would love to recommend this dude to you guys He ships it to any country and we have been working with him for a very long time.
he deals on so many things like DMT, LSD, mushrooms, MDMA and so many other???
It wasn't easy for me until I had somebody on telegram help me up LSD and with some of my friends.
@siri_tripstore
I'm about to start my first grow in a couple weeks, hoping for the best
thanks for this. getting prepped to s2b my first ever inoculation.
the picture in the back is crooked and it’s driving me nuts. 😂
I just buy calcium carbonate from the same hardware store where I buy my gypsum. Oyster shells are like 10 times+ the price of just regular calcium carbonate. It’s also powdered beforehand. :)
I have a question, though. Gypsum is mostly calcium as well. Couldn’t you just use more gypsum and omit the oyster shells/calcium carbonate altogether, or would that add too much sulfate to the mixture?
Just subscribed.
I like your style of thinking. Maximizing nutrients for a real proper product. I'm about to start my first time growing 🍄 for educational purposes of course...
I'm going to make a substrate with maybe 5-7 items you've mentioned in this video and other things I've read. I feel that will be the icing on the cake. PUN intended.
I just got done with my first grow. May I suggest just doing a simple coir only grow for your first? Starting with a basic grow without any additions will allow you to understand the process and how things look, without any huge upfront costs. Then you can add things here and there to fine tune your process. Just my suggestion.
I learned so Much. Thank u.
I live close to a bat cave .I use guno with my 420.plants
I now have a shit ton of vermiculite and coco coir-any additional videos on creating the right ratio and pasteurisation/sterilization of these ingredients would be helpful
Just starting out just a quick question. oyster shell and gypsum are they the same thing in the mushroom world or can I add both or just oyster shell is the best option?
Regarding the oyster shell supplementation: would you also add 5% dryweight of the oyster shells just like if it was gypsum?
Wondering the same
@@sirDrgreenSlick also wondering
@@howardakadukeholtz4956 thank you very much I'm hella stoked I got a response thank u and ima check it out
Did anybody get an answer as to how much oyster shell in this recipe?
@@joeg7491 Nope, Willy seems to want to keep that secret.
Nice to see someone printing quality hoodies and not GIldan. So many people charge $35+ for a $4 hoodie and $0.25 worth of ink. also kinda wanna try azomite in a blend and maybe insect frass for cordyceps.
New to mycology, was wondering if rabbit droppings were a good option?
What's up, Willy! I get my sub from Midwest Grow Kits and it's a "combination of Coco Coir, Vermiculite, Hydrated Lime, Gypsum, ph buffers, ph stabilizers, mineral water and a few other choice ingredients". That's the ingredients list directly from their site. I sent them an email and asked what their pH is and they responded and said it's 9.0 pH. I wish it was more like 8.0 pH but I still think it's pretty good for what it is. I bought thirty pounds of it to use, considering I'm a total beginner, but I now have the knowledge to make my own. Mush appreciated!! How do you feel about Midwest Grow Kits sub, now that I've said the ingredients? They call it casing sub, btw. But they said it can be used as both the sub and casing.✌️🙏🍄
I've used them a bunch and they worked great for my first few times.
No need to overcomplicate things trying to achieve mythical results.
Your my man I will be reaching out to you you will see my grow soon
Great stuff as always. I wish you could do a live.
Awesome video per usual! What’s your oyster shell percentage? I’ve heard 1-2% which does not contribute to your overall weight, just like gypsum. I want to make sure since this sounds like the substrate boost I needed. Thanks
Was there any mention of the ammount of oyster shell to use? Ive watched a couple times and cant find it
willy i have been using copper wire coned on the top of a small copper pipe stuck into the substrate. its called electroculture my babies coming out with 8inch caps n stem. the smallest one grown so far was 5inches cap n stem. still my first run on one 4ftx3ft yields a p dry. looking like a super mario health boost yo....
burma tooo
Interesting. I'll have to try that one. There are so many different ways to be creative in this process. Thanks.
Be careful with the oyster meal guys. The peer reviewed papers on the matter all state it has a negative effect on growth and yield if you add more than 2-3% of oyster meal. Increase in yields at 2% of your substrate.
He didn’t mention the ratio! Thanks for the info.
@@boothgeek anytime man. The research was done by groups growing oyster mushrooms, but it applies to all mushrooms in my experience so far.
Do you also use the gypsum along with oyster shells or just oyster shells without gypsum?
@@boothgeek I personally only use the oyster meal, because it's what's available in my area. If it were reversed, I would be happy with gypsum. I'm pretty sure they're adding the same nutrition, calcium, potassium, that kind of thing. So they could be interchangeable, but don't hold me to it lol.
@@BaltimoresBerzerker where can I read the papers you mentioned ,about using oyster
Just bought 25lbs can't wait to try it
I have been adding a little bit of bat Guano to my substrate instead of coffee grounds with good results.
Will I have a question. I am pretty efficient in growing cubes. I got a liquid culture of ps. Cyanescens Wavy Caps. I purchased a bag of hardwood substrate and thought I could inoculate some grains and then add them to the hardwood substrate. But from what I am learning some people are saying it won't work. I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for me as I would be growing this indoors in my condo. Any suggestions or thoughts are very much appreciated.
willy after doing my research i ordered oyster shell powder for calsium power up my substarate
You mention bat guano... Have you done anything or know of substrate that have used insect frass for cordiceps?
can you use for example malt extract in a bulk substrate to make it have more nutrients?
It depends on the sub mix. Nutritional yeast could also. Sometimes it's nitrogen levels that rookies have wrong.
I'm surprised that rock dust wasn't mentioned
Couldn't watch anymore, because willy made me think of Swan diving off a bridge... to try and find that next level!
Do I have to add millet or grain to your substrate or is it ready to go as is? Also do I grow out of the bag or so I put it in Tupperware/totes?
Will this make the mushrooms more potent or just increase yields?
So you don’t recommend pressure cooking the straw? I totally thought that’s what I was going to hear you say, I suppose that may reduce the nutrients or eliminate them as well 🤔
Great information. Thank you.
Can you please tell us how much Oyster Shell to mix in with the Gypsum?
I appreciate your comment
Hi Willy thanks for the videos....
I am new to all of this, and your videos have been extremely help full, This one was priceless as I have chickens so i have oyster shell avaliable to add to my substrate as well as spent coffee grounds. I read that Alfalfa pellets are also good to use.... Any suggestions on how to prepare them for use in substrate?
Good stuff thanks again....
Hi, Would Powdered egg shells work in place of oyster shells?
I would think so but haven't tried it... But eggshells are almost pure calcium also So I would think you would get roughly the same effect... But that's just a reasonable guess.
Cant wait to get nerdy on my lions mane mushrooms.
Hey Willy, I'm fairly new to growing mushrooms and I have had some success with gourmet mushrooms but I would like to branch out a little. Is there a way I can contact you to purchase some of your genetics from your library? Also I want to tell you thank you very much, seriously thank you for all the effort, care and reliable knowledge you put in your videos. I greatly appreciate the way you breakdown everything and explain your reasons for your process and what you're doing. Thank you.
Also I will be honest I'm terrible with social media and I don't have any social media accounts, which is why I am trying to reach out to you through the comments section of your video because I'm not sure how else to. Thank you again for your time and effort.

Hey, I’m really hoping somehow I could talk to you for a second. I am noticing that in a compost pile full of Pineneedles it’s very acidic and it’s getting rid of all the contaminated stuff that I put out there. I haven’t tried to harvest it because I’m kind of scared to, but it’s actually growing clean mycelium, or what looks to be in the Pineneedles
Just for accuracy; Generally straw is bedding, hay is food.
Hey willy, how much oyster do we add and do we use it in tandem with gypsum, thanks
Keep up the work willy!
Always enjoy your videos, thanks for all the knowledge. I even enjoyed the cment about saving the 🪱 worms!
Can this be added to a pasteurized coco substrate , say if you autoclave the straw and other micronutrients or would it contaminate. MUSH LOVE
Oyster shell is 95% calcium carbonate. So are egg shells, just cheaper.
Better start eating eggs Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, your gonna need a ton of them, alternatively cuttlefish "cuttlebone" will also do the job!
How do you know or how can you tell if you should pasturize or sterilize?
Are you recommending all these add-ons in conjunction or one at a time
Great info! Thank you.
Im thinking now,
50% coir,
30 % verm
15% cow compost
5% worm castings
5% gypsum
What do you think
I know this video is old but why does it sound like this substrate is overkill and greatly increases the chances for contamination by having all these other variable nutrients am I missing something
I’m thinking the same thing, i think it you experiment with different ratios and micronutrients that’s kind of the point, not blend everything he listed into one super substrate. I’ve always used gypsum but might try oyster shell to increase the calcium content and a very low ratio of work castings for nitrogen.
Turn down willy and play under the bridge by the chili peppers, he has the hand movements down👍 No hate🙏
I feel an experiment coming on. I wondering if buffering coco with cal-mag would do anything? 🧐
Okay I've got my hands on, oyster chells, bat guano, and worm casings.. question, how much of each roughly should I add to my Coco coir? TIA!😊
Do you believe white vinegar added to the water would benefit and help with contamination?
I used Willy substitute I got only six mushrooms. I your substitute will do better.
Gypsum @ 5% got it. How about that oyster shell flour? Somehow Willy talked right past that detail but reminded me to drink milk.
willys blend, got it. That has all this in substrate? Were do i buy it?
Willy, would you utilize the same substrate additives to a straw based substrate for straw lovers? I have some dehydrates organic straw pellets to start with as a base. Thanks in advance for any guidance you could provide.
I purchased 5 gallons of the dry sub from browntreasure but received 3.8 gallons. Was told this was the industry standard to advertise 5 gallons but only get 3.8. Can anyone confirm?
BS! if something is advertised as a certain weight or liters/gallons etc that is what you should receive!
Appreciate the video. Just out of curiosity, would you pick one of these boosters, or can you add them all? Some of them tend to overlap with what they provide, no? Thanks a lot for your help!
Great information and video, thanks
Hi great content ❤
But what was amount for the oyster shell?
Thank you very much Willy. Everything was very clear but except how much would small increments of bat guano be like what %?
When adding powders/coffee/azumite/worm castings etc do you add them after pasteurizing? Isn’t that risking contamination?
Or…can you add them in before pasteurizing
Any info fully appreciated
MANY THANKS
Add before pasteurization
Everything needs to be pasteurized
