  • Here we go. You have been enrolled for a long time. What has caused that long enrolment? But most importantly - how are you going to finish? How will you submit your thesis to examination? Today we talk through a diagnostic and a strategy to complete. Let's begin. Let's finish...
PS - sorry my eyes are red in this one! Long days and lots of screen work ;)

Thank you Tara, the intro offered a lot of reflections on my own study on ‘relationship-based Performance Management’ for newly qualified Social Workers and the safety net that their supervisors provide to enable growth and development. So much transferability!

I’m a long candidature survivor. Much of the bad issues happened in my life (death of my dad, change or supervision). What I can say about my own experience is that, in general, as Tara said, women, minorities, and older people are not supported to do a PhD. I think it could be helpful, from the start, to recognize these issues. Very few people in the institution are honest. What I can say is that for those people who want to start the PhD, especially women, people of “color”, and so on I recommend that you start with a publication or a master or research. These issues are not going to be addressed and it can ruin people’s mental health. And think the best way to deviate from it, is to be more prepared mentally and academically. And it’s not gonna stop there. I have had a modest academic career development and I have had to endure mysogynist narratives all along from men and from women. And I think I have had to develop an insensitive personality trait out of it. But at the end, everything is a choice and academia is also a choice.

Tara, I don’t know if I will ever start my PhD, but with all the advice you’ve gifted us, if I DO start, I know it’ll be to finish. You are an inspiration.

And Richard - that is key. Start with the end in mind. If we do that - we finish :) txxx

A powerful post. The 5 reasons for non-completion helped put my own situation in context. I often long wondered what contributed to my 'failure' and now I am sure. And knowing helps me accept and take responsibility (strategy 1-2!), and now I have a clear plan for submitting within 6 months. Thank you, truly, for giving us such valuable information, for context, understanding, and clear action.

Tara, im starting a 5th year part time it was not planned this way, but I've learned so much and now, only, i really know what I'm doing, i wish i did it 20 years ago, I'll be 60 this winter, i teach wich is new, but i do not recommend doing a long period of doctoral study and not get into academia unless we have strong family support for lifetime 😄.

Yes i think it's true. The longer you're enrolled the less the likelihood of completing. I really did mine in 1 year. I simply decided to complete at all costs. I was a year ahead of the full time deadline, two years ahead of my part time deadline. But I recognised that I had to hunker down or it would never happen. My difficulties have been post PhD. Don't think getting your PhD is all that great.

Hello Tara, what a week you have had. My PhD has slowed to a crawl since June. My supervisor has yet to return any feedback on my revised proposal, though I am assured that it is coming. I was so hoping to have my CoC completed by July. Now looks like it could be November. I'm not happy with this. I guess I will have to say something during my next meeting. Thank you for all of your support and assistance on this, either personally or through your videos, much appreciated. cheers, doug.

Hello Tara, i have only two months for submission end date, and i really need your valuable guidance on how to relate between chapters how to make a phd thesis runs smoothly and looks like a one piece of research? Also, what is the best way to write an introduction and a conclusion ? Many thanks for your precious support
