i love her!!she has such great face-and handexpressions when she is talking and delivers the message that she wants so clear!!! very charismatic!chapeau!
+alannah fitzgerald You are so kind, Alannah. And I am so lucky. I have - and have had - the best PhD students any supervisor could hope for. I have learnt so much from every single candidate. And they go on to create wonders for the planet. I am so proud of them. But anything you need - I am one message away :) Txxx
+Office of Graduate Research Flinders University Thanks again, Tara! BTW, we've been building a PhD abstracts corpus from theses managed by the British Library. Here's a keyword search for the terms "original + contribution" in the Arts and Humanities sub-section of the corpus - most notably, only 52 abstracts contain this word pattern... flax.nzdl.org/greenstone3/flax?a=g&sa=FlaxWordQuery&rt=r&c=PAAH&if=&s1.fqf=ZZ&s1.level=sentences&s1.groupBy=0&s1.fqk=%2C&s1.fqv=&s=FlaxWordQuery&s1.query=original+contribution
+alannah fitzgerald This is SOOOOOOO incredibly useful!!!! Isn't that amazing, Alannah? And so useful for students to know... Between us, we may just change the doctoral world :) Thanks for being you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xxx
I am in the last year of my PhD - I have found all of your Vlogs useful and this Vlog is particularly fascinating. I loved the idea of a creating a vista in the Introduction.Thank you so much, Tara.
Take away message from this vlog 1- bibliography 2- stylistic errors 3- original contribution to knowledge 4- fragmented thesis 5- short introduction 6- short conclusion 7- bad science 8- overall formatting in thesis
+Musicaliti My pleasure. And please keep in touch - let me know how you get on. It is a truth of doctoral education - start with the end in mind. Every best wish to you :) Txxx
To the Artifact and Exegisis section. 27:45 You very briefly mentioned DCA? Is that offered? What is it? vs PhD exegesis model. What is the difference? The well defined Arifact with Exegesis- Contributes to New Knowledge. Got it. Thanks so much again Tara. Binge listener...
Thank you, Tara. They've all been useful, informative, and inviting to watch, but this one particularly so in its focus and detail. So, thanks again. (1st year, humanities, PhD student)
+Kerz Kinetic Superstar - thank you so much. My love - you want to have a chat about any of these issues - my time is your time! And good on you for thinking about these issues nice and early in the candidature. It will make a real difference! Txxx
Thanks Tara. Amazing explanation of the opaque area of thesis corrections. I wish I had seen this during my submission process. But that was many years before RUclips even existed! Perhaps you could devote an episode to how one can maintain a good publication rate after submission, when people typically take on new areas of research when transitioning into junior academic roles.
Mate that is an amazing one. I was going to move into publishing and publications in future vlogs. But you've given me a ripper first blog in this area. Thanks so much! Txxx
Hello Professor, Great vlog; I also wanted to present what the Flinders 'information for examiners of RHD Thesis' states: Examiners of a thesis submitted for the degree of PhD should satisfy themselves that the student has demonstrated: a. evidence of an original investigation or testing of ideas; b. competence in independent research or experimentation; c. a thorough understanding of the appropriate techniques in the field demonstrated both by their application and a thorough review of the literature; d. critical use of source material, experimental results (where appropriate) and published works; e. appreciation of the relationship of the special theme to the wider field of knowledge; f. capacity to present well written work; g. a higher degree of independence of thought and approach; and h. a significant original contribution to knowledge in the thesis
+SANDEEP REDDY Fantastic Sandeep - it is so important that students, supervisors and examiners (!!!) read these regs. And you can see the disciplinary specificity there - but you can see how the corrections emerge - how they are mapped over those instructions. Well done Sandeep! Hope everything is great with you! Txxx
What a fantastic video. Fingers crossed I get someone like Tara for my thesis next year! I notice Tara does not use jargon and does everything in her power to get her words across succinctly and clearly.
Wow! it is very informative, clear, and useful. I am very thankful for your advice, guidance, kindness and your expertise in both academic and supervision to pave the way for students and make them see the light at the tunnel. Thank you, Tara.
This is just amazing. I came across your enthusiastic video on my breakfast and I thought it would be another video where people copy from each other. I have a predefense few days after and this is a practical approach based video. Subscribed to your channel as well 🤙
I JUST finished defending my dissertation. After the committee deliberated, my advisor brought me back into the room and said, "It's a pass with major corrections." I went into this defense thinking it was a simple pass or fail. Had no idea there were "bands of examination". So, I proceeded to cry like a blubbering fool afterwards, out of frustration that so many corrections needed to be done. I thought it was a simple pass or fail. Now I know otherwise and I feel a hair better about myself...Still got a ways to go though! Jesus, take the wheel!
Two days for VIVA : I put the original contribution to knowledge in my thesis title . I divided my title in two parts . The second comes after : and stares the main contribution to knowledge 🤷🏻
Again, thank you so much for this vlog! I am finishing the first draft on my practice-based research and you have just confirmed my concerns. Could you make a video on this type of research, please?
+Cathy Fitzgerald Wonderful Cathy - thanks so much. The podcasts have a more intimate role. Steve and I share our secrets with you. ;) But the vlog provides - I hope - a foundation of thought and thinking for you. That's the aim. Keep in touch gorgeous one - biggest hug Txxx
Hi Tara Another brilliant and thought provoking vlog delivered with passion and aplomb. I am from Barbados and I have recently submitted my thesis for my DBA (Doctorate in Business Administration). While going through my thesis in preparation for my viva, I realised that there were some formatting issues with the appendix including some that were inadvertently omitted. What should I do when I face my examiners? I was thinking about informing my examiners about the omissions and let them know that I have corrected my errors. Appreciate your thoughts and those of your viewers.
Amazing video, thank you so much. You mentioned that the length of references list is also taken into consideration. I understand that it depends on the field and topic but in general what do you expect?
I watched this video the calm me, I'm on my 5th mental breakdown at the moment 😤 I was supposed to submit my thesis this week and my supervisor decides to not submit my forms for process to the academic council so now I have to wait until September to submit which means I may not graduate this year 😭 I'm beyond upset but she says now that I have more time she wants me to change two chapters that were approved in March. I travel over an hour and a half to meet her once a week and she trys to get out of it or she does a rushed meeting for 30mins. My corrections take ages to come back and don't make any sense. I feel Abit better now I have that off my chest ! Still super angry 😡
Your impact on my doctoral education can not be overstated! Thank you!
i love her!!she has such great face-and handexpressions when she is talking and delivers the message that she wants so clear!!! very charismatic!chapeau!
Brilliant, Tara! Anyone who comes across your great resources must think to themselves: Gee, I wish she was (or had been) my PhD supervisor.

You are such an incredibly likable and competent Professor any doctoral candidate would wish to have as a supervisor. :)
Another beautiful explanation of what must be avoided to achieve an immaculate doctoral study :)

She's so animated. Belongs to the big screen like Lord of the Rings, Harry Porter vibes.
Great passion for a depressing sector.
I love your energy ♥

Hi Professor. I am at UCL taking an interdisciplinary MASc in Creative Health. Loving your blogs. Any thoughts about interdisciplinary PhDs?
So helpful... thanks Tara.
+Tomy Bawulang My pleasure - hope you are well :) Txxx
Hello Tara, What are the common questions asked during the defense of a Doctoral thesis and how can one best answer them?
Thank you, Tara. Can someone still become a professor if they do a PhD by prior publication?
'Oops', ha, ha...very good. Really helpful as usual.....Thanks
love this woman.
Thank you for the advice! Very informative and helpful. (Graduate Student in Education)
