    FUN FACT: The third final smash variant actually IS intentional, it seems -- the variant is seen in Street Fighter too, it's coded in as a failsafe for it the initial hit misses, seems like it works if you use it on an invincible opponent too! The amount of depth these characters got is absolutely insane

    Ryu's third final smash is actually a reference to the Forbidden Shoryuken, a multi hit move done when Shin Sho doesn't properly connect in Street Fighter proper. It's also done by Ryu and Ken's master, Gouken as an individual super.

      True but it is also basically identical to every whiffed cinematic multihit super or ultra. Even in Smash, there are tons of Final Smashes like Link which can't hold 7 other players but has an additional hitbox which is active.
      They are definitely designed for battles with more players first and foremost especially as it can still interact with items or stages.

      This is only one case of where a super has incomplete interactions and we know that Smash Ultimate uses a tracking system to decide the Final Smash. That is identical in principle to this since the first hitbox checks if the opponent is close and hasn't been juggled too much.
      Smash never cares about juggle state besides chain grabs.

    Fact: Despite the Sephiroth presentation claiming that Omnislash Ver. 5 is purely an aesthetic change, there are in fact some gameplay differences. The most significant is that the final explosion hit from the regular Omnislash uses normal knockback rules, where if an opponent is behind Cloud they will be launched in the opposite direction to the victim. However, Omislash Ver. 5's explosion always launches opponents in the direction Cloud is facing, even if they are behind him.

      That's technically aesthetic, Sakurai was just being accurate to how omni slash V5 worked in advent children anytime he used it in that movie the person was knocked in the opposite direction of him because of all the copy swords that spawned around him knocking them into the opposite direction of him, Sakurai just likes to be accurate and there is nothing wrong with that.

      Also the wide sweeping attacks above have expanded hit boxes.
      This is not important for tournament play but on larger stages like Temple the Alt Omni can draw in more people. From above thanks to the sweeping sword strikes.
      I tested this using training mode ice climbers. I had two climbers semi far apart and one below that I hit with the attack. The wide sweeps of the Alternate FS have a longer range and did damage to the more distant climbers when the regular FS did not touch them at all.

      @1998SIMOMEGA It is the same ANGLE, but the original calculates it facing the opposite direction if you are on the other side of Cloud and the Ver 5 doesn't.
      A similar example is how some up smashes will launch players on opposite sides in different directions (but at the same angle to the ground), but others will launch them both in the same direction and at the same angle.

    The shotos final smash is like in their real games where cinematic supers or ultras are not fully connected so they just play out with a weaker version

      Yeah, it isn't a "third" final smash in the same way that those moves aren't additional moves.
      It is just a "flawed" use of a cinematic move, but it isn't unusual for some cases to have applications.

    13:49 The cross gets reflected to the right, which means that the cross's "direction value" is still toward the left, even though the actual direction changed when returning.
    This must be why Link's shield can't block it, my guess is that it can only block projectile travelling towards the right (if link is facing left).

      disagree, you can test your theory by reflecting the returning cross a second time. it won't change directions.
      returning boomerangs become transcendent and can go through walls remember ? they can be reflected but the direction doesn't change, so i think they just bypass the shield

    For the last fact regarding Links shields and boomerangs:
    On the return path, boomerangs and belmonts cross go through stage collision as well, not just links shield

      Oh shoot that’s smarter than the thing I said, I thought my answer was the correct one. I said that the boomerang has a hitbox on the side your character is on so it would hit link even if he was facing said boomerang.

    Just for clarification, Ryu's "third" Final Smash is actually what happens if you miss the first hit of Shin Shoryuken, which is called the Forbidden Shoryuken in Street Fighter

    That's a missed shinsho animation. In games with ShinSho present as a Super for Ryu, if he misses with the initial hit he preforms a Shoryureppa-like move, shown in the video.

    8:48 I wouldn't exactly call it "spaghetti code," moreso one of the developers likely gave it the wrong number for the damage type (they most likely copied the hitbox flags from Ryu's attacks, which are fist attacks, and forgot to update them to foot attacks).

    Both Ryu & Ken's final smashes are working as intended and very accurate to their source material
    That version of Shin Shoryuken has always been there if you "whiff" the initial hit and possible land that instead just a big meaty Shiryuken it's always been like that
    Whilst Ken's Shippu would do that as well throwing out the initial kicks until the knee and if none connected the move wouldn't play out in full
    I'm surprised they went to the lengths to do these considering you're likely to never see them but that is exactly how they should be acting wonder if that was like that for Ryu in Sm4sh?
    Also Shinryuken was said (at least in style) to be a reference to the Vs games ie MvC where that sorta thing was very common and I believe that Ken's super here was mashable for more damage another surprising reference

      it doesn't block metal blade or thoron either, and sometimes the non returning young link boomerang hits the knee under the shield.
      other energy moves it can't block are the explosions from sefi's neutral B (somehow it's not a projectile so it can't be reflected either)

    There’s this fact that happened to me randomly one time, but if ness gets launched by any character with his final smash, and uses it mid launch, he might still die during the launch off the screen. It look really weird, so I think it’s a solid fact!

    Technically, Olimar's final smash does force him into a state where he's falling and can't do any actions until he hits the ground. It's not free fall, but it might as well be.

    Regarding Link's shield and boomerangs:
    Boomerangs have work in an interesting manner. They have different properties on the way out and the way back.
    Aside from K. Rools crown, a boomerang on the way out will proceed either untill it reaches it's final range, or until its hitbox is deleted, which can be done by hitting a target, another hitbox (being attacked) or by hitting another object (Link, Hero, Palutena's shield, a wall, etc.)
    Once the hitbox is deleted, a new, returning hitbox is created. This one is piercing, so nothing gets to just delete its hitbox, or impede it's motion... although reflectors reverse the hitbox's velocity, the associated animation, and the ownership of the attack.
    K. Rool's crown is unique, in that if the outgoing hitbox is destroyed, the hitbox (but not the animation) dissapear until the crown has reached it's turnaround point. At which point, the returning hitbox is spawned at that turnaround point. You can witness this by tossing it through Link's shield, or attacking it as it's being thrown.

      I definitely remember now playing as Palutena and reflecting Belmont returning Crosses, which would not be possible if they reversed the direction of returning projectiles.

    Fun fact: if you air dodge as hero, then it will make the sound for when you spot dodge. but if you do a directional air dodge as hero, then it will play the sound effect for when you roll.

    As for the Foot Attack vs Fist Attack thing with Ken, I think it's because Ryu's strong side tilt uses his fist while Ryu's strong jab uses his foot, resulting in the same attack Ken uses. That also goes off the same logic for why his Down special is weird.

    Someone probably already posted this but both Ken and Ryu’s “secret 3rd” final smashes are a reference to the street fighter series when you miss those specific super attacks. Long story short the way it hits (or doesn’t hit) the opponent is a direct reference to street fighter, which is really cool.

    on the returning cross/boomerangs
    when thrown , before coming back, they can interact with walls/shields, but on return, all of them go right through anything solid including shields

    If you look closely Ken does a spinning animation so it looks different to his normal variant, thus different coding. Ryu’s however plays the same animation (excluding the startup) so it would have the same coding.

    Fact: ZSS taunt voice lines aren't in the voice test menu,and I tested it myself to see if it was true myself.I find it weird since Joker and Luigi have their taunt voice lines in the voice test menu

    I think the reason that the last fact is like that is because their shield usually sends the projectile back or the projectile disappears/activates but because the boomerang can't disappear or get sent back when it's coming back, it just doesn't get blocked

    It is mentioned in the tips. It says using the final smash between attacks. It even mentions that you can cancel an attack into the final smash, which gives you what you showed us in this video

      Is you cancel most attacks into final smash you get one of the standard ones depending on when you canceled it

    I think with the boomerangs going through the shield, it's something to do with them having to return to the thrower's hand, when it pings off the shield for the initial throw, it changes direction to return to the thrower, but if it's already going towards them, it won't change direction because it still NEEDS to end at the thrower

    My theory about Link's shield interacting with different boomerangs: When the boomerangs return, they phase through solid objects to get back to the thrower, and this makes it impossible for Link's shield to block them, as they simply pass through it to get back to the thrower.

    When the boomerang is coming back and hits links shield, I believe it is hitting his legs and that is why it goes through. Try ducking when the boomerang returns

    I actually knew about the hidden variant of Ryu's final smash because I was messing around with him in the training mode of Smash 3DS and got it pretty consistently when I did Focus attack then strong up-tilt into Final Smash when the opponent is at 40%.

    Ken's Shinryuken first appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 1, and actually did have a property that would deal more hits and damage if you mash buttons during the attack. It's pretty sick that this is true in Smash as well. Sakurai really did his research.

      I think it is a bit novel, but he jumped the gun on making it the headline of the video as if it is an added move. It basically happens every time Ryu hits when a third player is too near.
      Other FS moves have hitboxes beyond the primary one as well.

    What happens with all boomerangs is that they become intangible to geometry when returning, so that they can faze through the stage and return to the thrower regardless of walls or new positioning and not get stopped on the way back

    My guess for why returning projectiles don't work right with the shields is that when a projectile is created, it has a variable for the direction it faces so it knows which direction to initially travel in. When it comes back around, the direction variable still says that it's traveling in its initial direction, but it's actual speed variable is in the negatives so it travels in the direction opposite to it's initial direction.
    When it hits the shield, the shield checks the initial direction variable to see whether it should block it or not. The initial direction variable says it's coming from the direction opposite to how it's traveling so the shield thinks it's coming from behind and doesn't block it.
