Auston's gonna be a Leaf for a long time, perhaps even for his career. Don't make sense to take on the captaincy if you don't see yourself with Toronto for the long haul. That's exciting.

Auston is an amazing sniper.
Tavares is pure class, takes a mature and level headed mind to realize it’s time and see the reality of the situation. It’s his last year making 11 mil and it wouldn’t make sense to try and resign their captain to 2 mil a year.
Indeed. The decision may not have originated with John, but we can only praise him for his understanding of the situation, his willingness to accept the change, and his grace in doing so.
They forced him to give up his captaincy , since he’s been in Toronto, his career has diminished. This is what Toronto teams do to you.

Six seasons ago, the Leafs were about to name Auston the captain until it was learned that he had mooned a female security guard at his apartment in Phoenix.
The what if is: If Auston had been the captain for the past six seasons, would his leadership have translated into better playoff success?

Auston Matthews is 26 and now he's Captain. Wendel Clark was 25/26 years old.
Matthews is a great player but I think he might want to ditch the earrings and white tenny shoes look. Tavares looks polished and professional while Matthews looks like a man dressed up like a teenager. Tavares has always been a classy player and the way he handed the reigns over just proved it.
The level of maturity from both individuals is inspiring.
Auston wearing running shoes and a Hanes undershirt to this event is an example of how he isn't mature or professional enough to be a team captain in the NHL. Especially one that plays under a pressure-cooker like Toronto. Can anyone see a player like Sidney Crosby ( a true winner and true leader) dressing this way to a press conference like this where he was being named captain?

This move would of happened eventually it's good they got it done by Brendan and Brad before the start of the season. The speech by johnny Toronto was classy. Craig is a no nonsense coach the guys better be in shape come training camp.

His elite talent is unquestionable. But does he have killer instinct to win the cup? I doubt it. But TBD
You can put the C on the personal trainer - it doesn't matter. The problem with this team is that it is a collection individuals, some of whom are very talented like Matthews. However, as long as you have Shanahan in charge, the culture of this team will never change, in that it remains just a collection of individuals, not a cohesive, unified team. We have seen whether it is on the ice play or contract negotiations, that some of these players are very self-absorbed and self-focused. Sacrificing personal ambition and personal benefit has not been a trademark of this team, which is why it will continued to be mired in mediocrity. That said, Tavares is all class and has been a great ambassador for this club. Clearly the initialization of this change was from management. Tavares has shown great humility in relinquishing the captaincy, but ultimately, this is all window dressing. I will believe real change is coming when Shanahan is gone.

When Brown was stripped of his "C", he supported Kopitar, but was visibly and openly irritated at the decision.
Am I alone in thinking that JT being here, announcing the passing of the C, saying it's an "honour" to essentially lose the C - is bonkers, surreal, and passionless?
I get JT wanting to be a good teammate, but this is just awkward.

There are several reasons to move the C now, one of them being JTs contract is on its last year and they want to sign him but at a much lower AAV obviously and as expected at that age. He can still contribute as a 3rd line center. It would be more awkward to resign the captain to a $2,000,000 AAV while still the wearing the C. This shows 100% class by the organization and by JT himself.

Congrats to Auston. On another note, Leafs are seemingly afraid to make any real changes to the structure of the team. How many tries has this overpaid core had now? Leafs will apparently continue down this road with massive contracts for a few players taking the majority of cap while filling in with bargain bin rest of the team. Such a pity

I believe change is good but at what cost? Does this mean Tavares time with the Leafs is over after next year? Can and will Matthew's actually step up and lead the team as Tavares has? And will he, Matthew's provide not only leadership but also evolve into a more successful player showing us he really deserves the C? The Leafs have a strong core but have failed hugely in the playoffs! We will see when the new season starts I guess!

Walked into an auto repair shop and saw both Chicago Blackhawk and Montreal Canadian memorabilia plastered all over the walls. The owners were dealing with a customer ahead of me in line. He wore a LEAFS cap. This is what the owners (they were in their 60's) had to say. " Your team going to make it pass the 1st round this year?" (They laughed) You know no one really wants to win on your team. (They laughed again) You know their losers right? (They laughed again) I walked up to the counter wearing a leaf jersey. This is what they said to me. NOTHING. In their face, I saw pain. They remembered what Dave Keon did to them, in 1967. You guessed it, I was wearing a Dave Keon jersey. The "C" was on the sweater. Matthews, it is up to you. You can be like our most recent captains. Or you can be something really special. You can be greatness. It is all up to you.

Your best player doesn't need to be your captain period. It should've went to Mo to begin with. Now if Auston had signed for 7 or 8 years, i could see it, but what are they gonna do in 5 years if he decides to leave? He hasn't wanted to commit to this team for the long haul..so why should he get it over Morgan whos shed blood sweat and tears for the leafs since 2012? I just hope the pressure of one simple letter on his jersey doesn't affect his play..
