I like that you distinguished between the 20 gallon long and high. Load-wise, Aquarium Advisor focuses on the surface area of the tank. In that sense, a 20 gallon long is equivalent to a 29 gallon. I like your suggestions, and would only add that live bearers can be readily combined with some of the other community fish. Also, your suggested loads are on the light side (based on Aquarium Advisor recommendations), which is better for beginners.
I tend to prefer recommending lighter aquarium stocking because it’s easier to maintain. Less cleanings, less water changes... and with less fish the water parameters stay pretty consistent for longer. Also, personally, I just think it’s more humane to not shove a ton of fish into a small space. Although official sources might say the aquarium can handle x number of fish, I just feel more comfortable suggesting a lighter stock. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
I know this is completely off subject but that thumbnail the lighting the way the video flow everything is awesome bro... you for sure should be in the 50k Club

This is probably the most accurate and most informative but at the same time the most underrated video on this particular subject on RUclips. Thank you so much for giving proper and realistic ideas for fishkeepers like me. The betta sorority part was my favorite. For many reasons I love female bettas more than males.
I really love female bettas too. I had a sorority tank a while back but it didn’t work out because I didn’t quarantine properly. A nasty parasite wiped all my bettas out in a day. It was devastating. So I figured I could share the knowledge I learned from that mistake for anyone else interested in keeping a sorority.
Thanks for explaining which ones do best in long vs tall tanks. I see a lot of videos where they make suggestions like every fish would do well in both.
Thank you for providing advice and education. It really bothers me that some big channels promote betta sororities…and they do so for beginners who are just finding out about things like bio-filtration.
*I just got a 15 gallon long tank* Was thinking of stocking it as follows; - 1x Honey gourami (male) - 10x Neon tetra - 4x Amano shrimp - 10x Red cherry shrimp - 3x small snails Is this okay? I know it sounds like a lot, but you gotta keep in mind that the snails and shrimp are really really light on the bioload. *As for filtration* , I'm using a Seachem tidal 35, which is used for up to 35 gallons. So my thinking is that the overfiltration this filter provides would help to keep the fish happy.
Should be fine. Start by adding small amounts of livestock over a longer period of time instead of all at once. And check your water parameters on the regular so if shit goes south you can take quick action!

Great 20 gal ideas, thanks for touching on so many different options. I will have to disagree with you on the goldfish, however, because they will simply grow too large to be kept in a 20 gallon their entire life (which could potentially be 10+ years). I would agree with you if you added the caveat of certain types of goldfish, like the Pearlscale, which can comfortably live in a 20 gal due to their smaller size. However, most types of goldfish will probably grow to be anywhere from 6-12+ inches depending on the type (say, Ryukin vs Comet or Shubunkin), so this is why I advise against suggesting goldfish unless one takes into account the particular type and planning for their full adult size.
That’s valuable advice that I hadn’t considered when I made this video. I was thinking of fancy goldfish, like pearlscales, like you said. But I probably should have been more specific. Thank you for commenting this.
I have several 20 gallon long tanks. I have 5 different types of cory catfish. I love them. I would like to get another tank but I live in an attic and I was told that anymore weight will make me fall through the floor.
Another suggestion for a 20 gallon long would be a crayfish they can come in a wide variety of colors to such as brown, blue, white, red, ect but you should only keep one of them per 20 gallons. I also suggest you keep them with fast moving fish without short fins such as small species of tetras, minnows, cherry barbs, ect. Mine personally is weird he is a electric blue crayfish and he is scared of everything I have him with a couple of swordtails and as soon as he senses them he swims away, I've even put my fingers in his claws and he does not pinch them. Ive kept crayfish in the past but none of them were anything like him so maybe he's just special.
What type of tetras, Definitely would be overstocked not to mention with the pleco the pleco alone has a high bio load and they tend to get big and will definitely outgrow the tank
Hi! Can I keep an angelfish in a Marina 20-Gallon LED Aquarium that is 24" long by 12.5" wide by 16" high? I think it's a little taller than a regular long tank, but not as tall as a standard at all. If I can, what fish can I put with it? Thank you!

I have a 20 gallon long and I want to put 10 neon tetras 4 Cory cats 10 silver tip tetras and 2 dwarf gourami. I have been looking for along time and I don’t know if that is to much or the perfect amount.
For my tank, I'm thinking about getting 7 neon tetras, 4 cory catfish, and a center fish like a female betta or a guppy. Would I have room for kuhli loaches? I have a special place in my heart for them and was wondering if I could have a couple of them aswell.
For your bottom dweller, I'd suggest you pick either kuhli loaches *or* corydoras, rather than both. Both of these species do better in larger groups, so it would be better for the fish if you just get a larger group of one kind instead of smaller groups of both.
If it's a 20 gallon long, I suggest you go with the Aquaneat LED light that you can get on Amazon. But if it's a 20 gallon tall/standard, the light on the Aquaneat may not be bright enough, and you may have to spend more money on something a little stronger, such as the Aqueon AquaBright.
@@JeremyGoneWildPets mines the 20gallon tall, currently i DIY'ed the basic ceiling led t-5 (3 x 10watts), it does the job but the tank can look better i guess 😅, that's why I'm looking around, was considering even a single flourescent t5 because of its ability for the fixture to be repaired and the cheap cost of the bulbs, what are your thoughts on it? Thank you
It will definitely do the trick. I personally prefer LED lights because you don’t have to replace the bulbs, but upfront they are more expensive so I can understand why you would want to go with a diy solution. Either way is great for plants. Actually the t5 is probably better for plants than an LED
The do alright in hard water too. They’re very tolerant and can live an anything between hard water and salt water, but for prolonged periods of time they do best in brackish water. If you put mollies in softer water, they will live for maybe a few weeks or months if you’re lucky, then die.
They’ve looked to be fine The betta is happy and made a bubble bed there all rescues but at diffrent time and they were all quarantined before going in the big tank
Jackson Esposito it’s hard to tell at the store. You can put the cups next to each other and shuffle them around a bit and eliminate anyone who is flaring or seems aggressive. But when you get them home, and put them in their quarantine tanks, you’ll be able to do further testing by putting the tanks next to each other. You’ll also get a better idea if their temperaments while they’re in quarantine. If you’re buying fish specifically for a sorority tank it’s entirely likely some of them won’t work out in the sorority tank and will have to be kept separate or returned.
Thank you, I’m in quarantine right now and I know I have 6 old 10g tanks in my garage. I was thinking to get maybe a 30 long or 40 breeder and turn this into a big project. Thank you for the help and I love watching your videos
Generally no. Smaller fish will be eaten by the axolotl. Larger fish will irritate the axolotl. Axolotls external gills can resemble bloodworms and fish like to nip at those gills. Regarding plecos, they have been known to latch on to axolotls skin, remove their slime costs, and damage their sensitive skin.
Wambo Gaming 6 neon tetras is a good start. I would suggest 6 kuhli loaches instead of 4, because they do better in bigger groups, and only one honey gourami instead of 2 because gourami do best with only one gourami in the tank. As for the shrimp, what kind of shrimp? My concern is that the gourami might eat the shrimp if they’re a small species.
Bamboo shrimp are a good size. But be careful... shrimp are very sensitive to water parameters, and they do best in mature tanks that have been running for several months, so using them to cycle the tank probably isn’t a wise choice. I personally don’t use any livestock to cycle my tanks, I do a fishless cycle using fish food as my ammonia source.
So far, I have 2 snails and 5 fish. 3 Cardinals and 2 Neon tetras. I’ve heard that sometimes they like to school together and the substrate might be too sharp for Cory doras so I might just have more room for other fish. I will be getting a dwarf Gourami as a centerpiece...
As similar as Cardinals and Neon tetras are, they are different species and need their own schools. I suggest you get more of them so both species' have their own schools.
@@JeremyGoneWildPets oh I’m getting more. This is just in a mean time so that I don’t have an ammonia spike and I can save enough money for the rest of the fish.
I have a single angelfish in my 29 gallon and was wondering what else to add. Hopefully he or she isn't too territorial to add other fish. Thank you for this video!
@@JeremyGoneWildPets thank you! I have been considering that! The only problem is I want to add gravel to my tank (it's bare bottom right now) but I heard sand is best for corydoras. And I am a little afraid of sand because it can develop toxic air pockets and it is honestly a pain in neck to have (I have had it before). Do corydoras need sand and if so, how high is the risk of sand causing a problem?
Corydoras definitely do best on sand. But sand isn’t really that scary. You only need to worry about buildup of toxic gasses is the sand is really deep. But if the sand is only like an inch deep or so, then it’s not deep enough for that to happen. Also, the corydoras help stir the sand for you, so it’s even less risky with them in the tank. If you decide to use gravel, just make sure the gravel is smooth and doesn’t have any rough or sharp edges that could cut or irritate their bellies.
Sure, you could put 2 smaller schools of maybe 6 small fish each, but it's much better for schooling fish to be in larger groups of the same species rather than smaller groups of more species. So it's more beneficial for the fish if you only have 1 type of schooling fish but in larger numbers.
Male beta fish are not a great Idea to keep in a 20 gallon tank with harliquin rasbora. I have had problems with fin nipping with harliquin rasbora on the bright colorful fins of the Male betas. I had 2 betas in there and they both got stressed and had fin rot and had to be moved to a different tank
I have a 20 long 1 small angel but will grow 1 dwarf gouromi 9 painted platys 3 dalamtion mollys 4 corydoras and 90 gallons if filtration becouse i had to out all my fidh in my 20 long so it had 2 filterd
I started a beta sorority but they all hated the elephant ear beta so I had to remove her. Also I picked up a 36 gallon hexagon tank maybe stick to schooling fish and bottom dwellers?
I would not put a angel fish in a 20gal I am new to the hobby so I don't know everything but I have 3 tanks running a 55,29 and a 10gallon and my 3 angel fish are in my 55 and they are HUGE maybe a 29gal but Def not a 20gal
Agreed on most of this information until you said that an angelfish or even a pair of them were a good idea for a 20 gallon standard tank. That is an absolute terrible suggestion I can not stress enough that 20 gallons of water is not enough for even a single angelfish unless obviously it is used as a “grow-out tank” and that is it. Please stick to other suggestions if you want a Cichlid. Apistogrammas or rams would love a 20g long or standard. And even a fish like a keyhole Cichlid could live in a 20 standard long term. but not an angelfish.
Tomahawk Oddballs Thank you for your feedback. I’ve not kept angelfish myself but I see influential fish keeping youtubers keep them in 20 gallon and 29 gallon tanks all the time, and it was suggested to me when I made this list which is why they made it into the video. I understand if you feel that is too small, and I agree that bigger is better. According to the angelfish keepers I have spoken with, a 20 gallon tall tank would be the bare minimum. I generally do advocate going above the bare minimum. And I am always learning, so if there are additional resources that you can direct me to that indicate a different bare minimum, I would be interested in seeing it. Thanks.
Jeremy's Wild Studio a single angelfish in a 29g with some schooling fish maybe but two I’d say at least a 40.. especially if they aren’t a breeding pair or they are two of same gender... angelfish are a shoaling fish. If you do not plan to keep a proper shoal then you’re supposed to either have just 1 or a mated pair. If you have a mated pair then 40g+ tank is perfectly fine... a 20g could be used as a grow out tank for a little while but definitely not longterm.. even though not long they are very tall... (and also a lot meaner than name suggests lol)... and they will appreciate the extra height of larger tanks
Mollies can actually live in saltwater as well as long as they are well acclimated search it up as well as plenty of saltwater aquarium pictures with mollies in them mainly sailfin mollies I believe
Sharon Kaczorowski you’re definitely entitled to that opinion. I’ve seen a lot of betta sororities fail, so I understand why you would think that. But also I’ve seen a lot of successful betta sororities. It all comes down to the expertise level of the fish keeper, and their willingness to not cut corners. Like I said in the video, it’s only for advanced fish keepers. A lot of betta breeders keep their females together, though, for example. It’s a lot more common than you would think. But if you don’t feel comfortable with it, definitely don’t do it. If my description of it in the video made you feel like it’s not for you, then it’s probably not for you.
Thank you...no, I won’t be doing it. I am not qualified and would be afraid I cause them harm. They are beautiful...just as beautiful as the males. I really enjoyed the video. I am asking for Christmas money to set up a fifteen gallon...I’m disabled and often in bed. Haven’t kept fish for a while, but would really live a community tank...I saved your video! The hobby gas cone a long way!

Can i do a tropical fish community with a collum?
i had never heard before that mollies are brackish..i did not know that.also i emailed youuuuuu.💕
The do alright in hard water too. They’re very tolerant and can live an anything between hard water and salt water, but for prolonged periods of time they do best in brackish water. If you put mollies in softer water, they will live for maybe a few weeks or months if you’re lucky, then die.
@@JeremyGoneWildPets good to know.did you get the email? ☺
Mercy S yes I did :)
@@JeremyGoneWildPets cool..i sent a few more too👍❤
I have a 20 gallon standard is 10 guppy’s 1 platty 1 molly 3 ottos 1 snail and a betta okay?? Plz let me know ASAP
They’ve looked to be fine The betta is happy and made a bubble bed there all rescues but at diffrent time and they were all quarantined before going in the big tank
For the sorority tank do you know how to tell a temperament at the store or is it something you can just tell by looking at them
Jackson Esposito it’s hard to tell at the store.
Thank you for the help and I love watching your videos
would there be any types of fish that could live with the axoltol ............like plecos or somthing
@@JeremyGoneWildPets thanks for the info
@@JeremyGoneWildPets so glad you knew this! great information, video, and overall channel!
i have a 20 gal long and im thinkig of getting 8 neon tetras, 4 corys and 1 honey gourami. is that a good stock?
I’d get a couple more corys but other than that I think that sounds good
Is 50 guppies a good stocking idea
That’s definitely over crowded for a 20 gallon tank. 10-15 guppies might be better.
Jeremy's Wild Studio yea im just pulling ya leg man.
Oh! Haha! It’s hard to tell when someone is being sarcastic in the comments, sometimes. Thanks for watching my friend.
Jeremy's Wild Studio but 1 ciclid and 2 discus and maybe 1 angel would work🤔🤔😭😭
You know what just get yourself a great white shark, it’ll be fine.
How do u keep water cooler?
Would 6 neon tetras 4 kool loaches and 2 honey gourami work. And would some shrimp fit
@@JeremyGoneWildPets I was thinking bamboo shrimp ro help cycle the tank and there to bug to not get eaten.
Hey, I have a 29g and I have an angel 8 tetra and 4 corydoras and it’s perfect
Good information..thanks
nice video!
Hii do you know what Ph should purple tetras should be at?
Those are some nice fish to keep in that size tank!
I have a single angelfish in my 29 gallon and was wondering what else to add. Hopefully he or she isn't too territorial to add other fish. Thank you for this video!
I would suggest a school of corydoras! They’re super cute and they will give you a lot of movement at the bottom of the tank.
@@JeremyGoneWildPets Thank you so much for your help! Good to know sand isn't so scary! I really like your channel and I subscribed.
Thank you! I appreciate that.
Hi great video! can i put two schools of fish in a 20 gal?
Sure, you could put 2 smaller schools of maybe 6 small fish each, but it's much better for schooling fish to be in larger groups of the same species rather than smaller groups of more species. So it's more beneficial for the fish if you only have 1 type of schooling fish but in larger numbers.
Male beta fish are not a great Idea to keep in a 20 gallon tank with harliquin rasbora. I have had problems with fin nipping with harliquin rasbora on the bright colorful fins of the Male betas. I had 2 betas in there and they both got stressed and had fin rot and had to be moved to a different tank
what is a live bear? bear?
Good video
Nice informative vid, but would have been even better if you showed us a clip or pics of the fishes you’re talking about for newbies
I have a 20 long 1 small angel but will grow 1 dwarf gouromi 9 painted platys 3 dalamtion mollys 4 corydoras and 90 gallons if filtration becouse i had to out all my fidh in my 20 long so it had 2 filterd
Where do u put the top fin heater
Made a Guppy Mutt Tank then a week later I tossed in 8 exodon tetras. Everyone's swimming so fast!
You’re joking right ?……
If that’s a 20 gallon tall what’s mine? It’s 2 feet tall and 20 inches wide, would it be extra tall? Lol
I am a beginner and I put three female Bettas together in a ten gallon tank and it was completely fine no one was stressed or attacked
Need pictures/videos of what you’re suggesting
I'm a big fan 20 longs with tangs in it
20 gallon tank- me: throw a bunch of guppies in it and say ok! 😂
Why do you think I was trying to get ahold of you for guppy tank footage
Jeremy's Wild Studio 😂 yeah I wish I could have sent you some! I have SOOO many babies
Liked and subbed
I appreciate that!
Great video bro
Thanks for letting me use your tank footage
@@JeremyGoneWildPets no problem any time!
I just tried making my first fish video :)
I started a beta sorority but they all hated the elephant ear beta so I had to remove her. Also I picked up a 36 gallon hexagon tank maybe stick to schooling fish and bottom dwellers?
You forgot 4 Oscar's😂🤣🤣😂
No I don’t think I did
And an arowana. Maybe a few red tails too.
Lol
(and also a lot meaner than name suggests lol)... and they will appreciate the extra height of larger tanks
i want an axolotl so bad in my 20 gal long but theyre illegal in california :(
Are they really? Why
photos would have been nice
Comment on mollies being brackish water only and don't do well in fresh is wrong. Mine are just fine in freshwater. In fact they have been breeding.
Mollies can actually live in saltwater as well as long as they are well acclimated search it up as well as plenty of saltwater aquarium pictures with mollies in them mainly sailfin mollies I believe
Betta sorority does not sound like an ethical way to keep fish...personally. I want my fish happy, nit stressed.
I wouldn’t recommend betta because i just got a female yesterday and i had 6 black neon tetras and a snail and she killed everything in one night
I have to 20-gallon high tanks on a double stand. The top tank contains 10 Serpae Tetras and 1 Ancistrus, while the bottom tank contains 8 Beacon Tetras and 1 Ancistrus.
Oooh I’ve never heard of beacon tetras!
*googling intensifies*
