Back when I used to work at my LFS, and we would always recommend danios as a starter fish due to their hardiness and higher activity. Personally, my favourite is the Kyathit danio, or the "orange-finned" danio! Mine didn't get as blue as I have seen in photos online, and I am still on the lookout for ones that have more of a leopard pattern (mine have more stripes), but they are indeed a cool little fish. They are nippier than I expected, so I would definitely recommend them to be kept in their own school in a 20, or for bigger aquariums, with more active tetras like Phantoms, Emperors, or Blue tetras. They like lots of open swimming space to zoom around! I would say they're underrated in my experience, usually due to the fact that they're not initially as flashy as a neon or cardinal, but once they colour up at home they put on quite the show. Great recommendations all around, and perfectly timed for my 20H overhaul :D
Slightly off topic, I'm raising 6 red shoulder severum in a 20 gallon tank, and I realized that in the wintertime the well water I'm using gets really hard. It turns out that this actually promotes the growth of your fish! I'm trying to find any literature or study on how this could affect the fishes metabolism in general but other than vast generalizations there is not much to be found. Spawning, laying eggs etc. Is a different story, but this is actually good news to all those that are constantly fretting about water hardness ph.etc.
It can help by provided minerals the fish require. However, most wild-caught fish that normally reside in softer water may struggle considerably. You are correct, many fish that are naturally found in softer water may not be able to produce viable offspring in harder water.
Hello I’m 6 months deep in the hobby now, I love the channel you provide a lot of great information and tips, I have a quick question about stocking an aquarium, how many different species would you say is too many for a community tank? I currently have hengeli raspbora’s (5), julii/sterba cory’s (3/2), odessa barb’s (3) and an albino bristlenose pleco. I wanted to add a couple leopard danio’s and a handful of neon tetra’s to add some mid to upper tank dwellers. Is having 5 or 6 different species in a 24 gallon too much diversity though?
I love when you add fish that aren't common cause that is what I usually looking for. RIght now I'm stocking a 40 breeder, and personally I love fish that are ideally kept in a 10 gallon usually nano fish like CPDs, pencilfish, dwarf corys, rasbora brigittae, etc that usually grow to only 1 inch
My 20 gal has ..... Black skirt tetras, Neon Tetras, Platties, Zebra Danios, Cory Cat, 1 Dwarf Gourami, and 1 Betta. ..... Heavily planted in tank. Pathos vine growing out top of tank. Extra filtration.
We’ve got 2 African Dwarf frogs (one albino and one green) and was looking for ideas on what else to add to our 20gal. Opinions on some good tank mates?
I can always spot a cichlid due to the way they swim... like when they're just hanging out...the use their dorsal fin... at the very end. The way they sway it !
I like your videos. I live in California and I have a 20 gallon fish tank. I want to put use it as an outdoor fish tank on the side of my outside bar on my patio that has a cover. What fish do you think I can use or try out?
Depends on the temp of the tank. If you think it will stay in the low 70s you will want cooler water fish like white clouds, hillstream loaches and paradise fish. If it's going to get into the upper 70s consistently, any of the fish listed here should work. Wish I could do that, but Chicago weather doesn't allow for it. :-)
I'd like to do some Galaxy rasboras (can't find them local yet) might go harlequin, ember Tetras, and maybe some guppies or mollies. I'd like some kind of catfish but I have gravel.
Good stuff! I have to ask- you said you had hydra because you fed baby brine shrimp. I just bought some BBS eggs. My plan was to hatch them in small batches as treats for my small fish. Will this give my tanks hydra?
Any plans on doing a 40 gallon version of this series? It's a fairly popular tank (you seem to like 'em too!) but its hard to find great information on stocking.
So I am thinking about making a tank. I have a 20 gallon long and was thinking about 1 fancy goldfish in it. I kind of wanted one that was decently planted though as well. I’ve normally seen goldfish in a non-planted tank do you think that I could put a goldfish in a decently planted tank? Thank you.
Amazing ideas! I just set up my 20 long with a huge group of corys, a betta, some neon green rasboras, and a Bolivian Ram! I noticed some white dots on the bottom fins of you bolivian ram. Is that normal? I think mine is getting some white dots, too.
Any idea of the size of the cylindrical tetra tank from AquaShella (all these years later)? I would love to put my tetras in a tank like that. Thanks for all the info.
Awesome video! I have a quick question about the cryptoheros nanoluteus; what are some good tank mates for these fish? Could you keep them with rainbowfish, peaceful barbs or even somewhat larger cichlids like flag cichlids?
They there Jason. So, I had Dwarf Rainbowfish in my 20gallon tank, optimal water conditions, and i've had corys and mollies living happily in there for over 6 months.. Sadly, these rainbows passed only 1 week in the tank, do you know what could have caused this? Water was 0Amm, 0nitri, and very low nitra (planted semi-heavy) and the ph was around 7.5..the only thing i can think of is that it's the same thing that caused my mystery snail to turn black/brown and pass.. i think maybe theres some kind of metals in my water(like copper from the pipes) that's causing the issue, but i've had a betta live for a while in the water (same water as the snail) and as mentioned earlier, mollys/corys in this tank for a long time... any suggestions you might have for a 'centerpiece' style 'showstopper' fish for this tank? one that might be able to handle w/e hidden thing is in the water quality?
For a 20 gallon tank, would the combo of 2 honey gourami, 5 zebra danios, 8 chili rasboras and 3 nerite snails be good? It's important to me to build around the danios. When I was a little kid we had a big tank and the danios were always my favorite. We had one that survived basically throughout the lifespan of the tank, probably a good six or seven years. Considering we weren't great fish owners, this is a small miracle. Anyway, I'm planning on buying my first tank as an adult in college, and I really love this combo for the presence of danios, the bigger color pop of the gouramis, the red of the chilis (I want to feature red because I go to University of Wisconsin), and the snails make a great cleaning crew. AqAdvisor says I'm at 86% stocked for the tank I plan to buy (which is apparently officially 21.7 gal, based on dimensions). If this combination is unlikely to work, what suggestions would you have that incorporate the school of zebra danios, a pop of red, a couple bigger fish, and a cleanup crew? Thanks in advance!
@ Prime Time Aquatics, what would you suggest for tank mates for a breeding pair of pelvicachromis pulcher (Kribensis cichlids) in a 29 gallon long tank? It seems to be a waste to have that large of a tank for only 2 fish. Maybe a small school of some type of tetra or barb? Snails? Shrimps? If you had to set it up and the only restrictions were that it had to be a 29 long and had to have a breeding pair of pelvicachromis pulcher how would you set it up?
Good question. Snails and shrimp would probably be attacked if they get too close to their spawning site. Anything fast will probably eventually pick off all the krib fry too. I'd probably just move the pair into a 10 gallon or 20 and re-stock the 29.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I don't have anything in the 29 yet and I was considering putting a breeding pair of pelvicachromis pulcher in it but thought that it would be a waste of space to have that big of a tank for only 2 fish plus I would want a clean-up crew. What about a few sparkling gouramis and an L 280 pleco (they only get 2.5 inches max). Would they get picked on or killed? I think that would look amazing if compatible. The bright colors of the Kribs mixed with the full colors and bright blue eyes of the gouramis and the mini pleco or pair of mini pleco for clean-up crew would all compliment one another if they can be mixed.
How many fish is too many for a 20 gal? I currently have 2 black mollies, 2 tetras, 2 catfish, 2 danios, and a snail in my sons tank. They all seem content with life no fun nipping has/is occurring, but the danios definitely seem to run the tank. Just curious what your thoughts are.
Excellent. I assume that that could be all of one species or a mix of them both. Thank you so much for all the information. I’m a total newb at all this and your channel has been extremely helpful. Thanks again.
It's hard to say. They can be a little rough on one another if you wind up with a bunch of males. I've had multiples of one kind in a 20 gallon long and 29 gallon with minimal issues, but they grew up together and had their own territory. If you try it, I would have a back-up plan just in case it's not working out.
1 Honey gourami ,4 Denison barb, 8 Neon Tetra, 4 black Tetras ,4 Cherry barb ,1 Bolivian ram & 1 bristlenose pleco. Will these combination survive in a 30 gallon. And these need a heaters??
Yeah these should all survive together in a 30 gallon cause a lot of those fish are quite small so the gallon per inch rule is kinda thrown off a bit, I would just make sure that you get a good filter for your tank and yeah it will need to be heated
Your nannacara anomala look quite different than mine! Mine never get such a blue coloration. My dominant male is more of a green/teal color highlighting a gold body. Perhaps we have different localities.
I just setup my 20 long as a high flow river tank. I planted baby tears for some carpeting and one Anubian Nana so i have a couple of weeks to commit to the stocking. I want to try 8 Tiger Barbs with 2-3 Hillstream Loach. I'll be using a 115 GPH canister filter and an adjustable power head for current. Do you think this will work out?
Nice ideas Jason! I came from school yesterday and I put my tank lights on and I saw fish eggs. I'm pretty sure they are glassfish eggs. Not sure tho. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks jason
I think you can go with either the tropical, cichlid or color enhancing food. I generally like to feed a variety of food, so maybe that is something you feed every other day or so?
Prime Time Aquatics I feed New Life Spectrum, sinking pallets and flake food. I wanted to try the bug bites but I’m not sure yet. What do you feed your Bolivian rams?
hello, wanna advice or help, So I have a 10 gallon tank and there a 6 female swordtails and 2 mystery snails and I just got a 20 gallon tank and will be transferring them to it, wanna know your idea coz wanna add 4-6 panda cory and I still looking which centerpiece should I be keeping. Thank you
Just set up my first aquarium tank. I've had some growing up but never my own to maintain. It's just in the cycling process now. If I wanted to also include like 3-4 shrimp how many tetra could I have without over stocking? 6-8 maybe?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you for the response! Although controversial I am getting the glofish tetra but would they try to kill/eat cherry shrimp? If so what would you recommend to go along with these tetra? I'm lost when it comes to "clean up" scavanger aquatic species.
Depends on the tank, but I could see them working ok with angels. Hard to say for sure with the rams only because I have found similarly sized cichlids tend to chase each other around periodically. If I were trying that I would also have a back up plan in case they don't get along.
I'm thinking of getting like 12 cardinal tetras and a male betta, with live plants. The theme (u probably won't understand if u dont watch anime) is Hunter X Hunter and the 12 cardinal tetras are the 12 legs of the spiders in the phantom troupe and the betta is the boss (Chrollo), which is the head of the spider. I wanna get some snails too, it will be 4 and it would be Kurapika, Leorio, Gon and Killua. I feel like that's too much and let's add the fact that I wanna add 1 more type of like fish and that will be Hisoka but I dont know what to put. So that will be 12 Cardianal tetras, 1 male betta, 4 snails, and maybe like a smaller sorta catfish (hisoka). I always liked bettas and ive seen them live with other fish and that cardinal tetras are good companians with them also snails, but i dont know about a catfish if thats to much or maybe the catfish will bother the snail....i know their are some type of catfish that go well with bettas and are small. Its also a 20 gallon long tank. Tell me if thats too much fish or not.
I wish I found this video a few months ago. The only personable fish I was steered toward was German Blue Rams. Which are nice, but just didnt do it for me. I ended up going in a different direction, but I wish I had a few of these guys.
I was just about to set up a 20 gallon long planted tank, and I really want to have some chiclids in there. I noticed you mentioned the rainbow chiclids, how many could I put in the tank?

I'd like to do some Galaxy rasboras (can't find them local yet) might go harlequin, ember Tetras, and maybe some guppies or mollies. I'd like some kind of catfish but I have gravel.
Could you do a 50 gallon tall stocking idea's.
That aquarium at Aquashella was pretty lit ngl
Good stuff! I have to ask- you said you had hydra because you fed baby brine shrimp. I just bought some BBS eggs. My plan was to hatch them in small batches as treats for my small fish. Will this give my tanks hydra?
If they eat them fast enough probably not.
Thanks bud 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Any plans on doing a 40 gallon version of this series? It's a fairly popular tank (you seem to like 'em too!) but its hard to find great information on stocking.
I’ve thought about it, but the 29 gallon and the 55 gallon options still work for the most part. 😀
Well done man well done
Thank you!
Thank you.
They usually dig them up or mostly eat them.
Amazing ideas! I just set up my 20 long with a huge group of corys, a betta, some neon green rasboras, and a Bolivian Ram! I noticed some white dots on the bottom fins of you bolivian ram. Is that normal? I think mine is getting some white dots, too.
I have seen that on some as well.
White skirt tetra are just black skirt tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) bred to be white.
Are those geos pellegrini in the white skirt tetra portion?
They are! Just pulled a bunch of eggs from a female, but they weren't viable. Darn it!
WIAT. OMG THAT IS SO COOL 7:10 IN THE VIDEO WHAT IS THAT FISH I MUST HAVE IT!!!!
Those are brichardi.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you!!!!
Any idea of the size of the cylindrical tetra tank from AquaShella (all these years later)? I would love to put my tetras in a tank like that. Thanks for all the info.
I don't remember exactly, but it had to be at least 150-200 gallons?
Awesome video! I have a quick question about the cryptoheros nanoluteus; what are some good tank mates for these fish? Could you keep them with rainbowfish, peaceful barbs or even somewhat larger cichlids like flag cichlids?
I think the rainbow fish and peaceful barbs could work!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you!
So I’m gonna get 2 bristelnose plecos 6 tetras and 1 or 2 blue angelfish and I am wondering if that is to much for a 20 gallon tank
I might go with one pleco. My largest angles are about a foot long from top to bottom? You might want a new tank for them after a few months.
Prime Time Aquatics ok thanks
Great ideas 💡
Sounds like your parameters are fine. Could have been a sick group of fish. How about a Bolivian ram?
What would you recommend for a 28 gal bowfront?
Anything listed in our 20 or 29 gallon stocking options videos!
That could work. I might add a few more honey Gourami?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for your quick reply! Wow, could a couple more gourami fit without overstocking?
Aquatics unlimited is awesome!!!
Great channel!
Thank you!
The bright colors of the Kribs mixed with the full colors and bright blue eyes of the gouramis and the mini pleco or pair of mini pleco for clean-up crew would all compliment one another if they can be mixed.
the skiffia are pretty nice :)
I love them too!
GOOD VIDEO 👍
Thank you!
With that mix you could probably add another four danios or tetras. :-)
Excellent. I assume that that could be all of one species or a mix of them both. Thank you so much for all the information. I’m a total newb at all this and your channel has been extremely helpful. Thanks again.
I love them rams.Could i put a few of each kind of ram in a 20?
It's hard to say. They can be a little rough on one another if you wind up with a bunch of males. I've had multiples of one kind in a 20 gallon long and 29 gallon with minimal issues, but they grew up together and had their own territory. If you try it, I would have a back-up plan just in case it's not working out.
What are some good tank mates for guramis
This will help: ruclips.net/video/4Efyiwo-lc4/видео.htmlsi=5iQ2Kq28-jJNkB6R
1 Honey gourami ,4 Denison barb, 8 Neon Tetra,
4 black Tetras ,4 Cherry barb ,1 Bolivian ram & 1 bristlenose pleco.
That's a good mix. I might hold off on the Denison barbs in a 20 gallon because they get pretty big - 6" or more. Definitely get a heater. Good luck!
@@nataliapierce4001sure, thanks for the advice.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for the advice. N love ur videos.🐠👍
would a birchir or black ghost knifefish work?
They both need very large tanks - 6ft tanks at least.
Your nannacara anomala look quite different than mine! Mine never get such a blue coloration. My dominant male is more of a green/teal color highlighting a gold body. Perhaps we have different localities.
That could be. Interestingly, I have a female in the 150 and she turned quite a bit more gold after going in that tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Interesting, so then maybe it is environmental, like some rainbow fish.
I think it is a combination of different substrate color, lack of other nannacara in the tank, and an increase in larger fish.
The tiger barns might be a little rough on one another. If you like barbs you could also look at cherry barbs?
Great job 🙌
great vid , still mightly impressed by the silkiness of the beard , what products dop you use or recomend the shin is emmense
I have some type of beard oil that I think came from Duluth Trading Co., but I can't read the label anymore. : -)
What would be Good tankmates for a Julidochromis Transcriptus for a 20 gallon??
Multis or similis shell dwellers?
Nice ideas Jason! I came from school yesterday and I put my tank lights on and I saw fish eggs. I'm pretty sure they are glassfish eggs. Not sure tho. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks jason
That's so cool! Where were they located? Connected to leaves and stuff?
Which of the fluval bug bites should I feed my Bolivian ram? And that’s cool I didn’t know you could put a pleco in a 20 gallon.
I feed them the same as you. : -)
No issues with ram and apisto in the same tank?
Depends on the tank size and how it’s set up? Usually works best in at least a 3ft long tank.
Surprise fry is the best fry! Just here to say Julidochromis are the best fish evah!
I agree! : -)
hello, wanna advice or help, So I have a 10 gallon tank and there a 6 female swordtails and 2 mystery snails and I just got a 20 gallon tank and will be transferring them to it, wanna know your idea coz wanna add 4-6 panda cory and I still looking which centerpiece should I be keeping. Thank you
That should work! Centerpiece could be a dwarf or honey gourami, maybe a Bolivian ram?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you so much, so I'll do
6 swordtails
6 Cory
1 bolivian Ram. :)
Just set up my first aquarium tank. I've had some growing up but never my own to maintain. It's just in the cycling process now. If I wanted to also include like 3-4 shrimp how many tetra could I have without over stocking? 6-8 maybe?
That sounds about right. Some tetras may start picking off the shrimp though - especially babies.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics
Thank you for the response! Although controversial I am getting the glofish tetra but would they try to kill/eat cherry shrimp? If so what would you recommend to go along with these tetra? I'm lost when it comes to "clean up" scavanger aquatic species.
They may try to eat smaller shrimp. In a 20 gallon a single bristlenose pleco usually does a great job! You could also look a a few mystery snails.
What about amano shrimp or a nerite snail for the clean up crew?
Sure
Are the cryptoheros nanoluteus compatible with German blue rams? And angels?
Depends on the tank, but I could see them working ok with angels. Hard to say for sure with the rams only because I have found similarly sized cichlids tend to chase each other around periodically. If I were trying that I would also have a back up plan in case they don't get along.
Woah! I wasn’t expecting you to talk about the fish store I go to in Milwaukee, it’s great there isn’t it?
Very cool place!
I think that could work in a 20 gallon for sure!
I wish I found this video a few months ago. The only personable fish I was steered toward was German Blue Rams. Which are nice, but just didnt do it for me. I ended up going in a different direction, but I wish I had a few of these guys.
Something to look for in the future. : -)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Definitely! Thanks for making the video!
is 8 neons , 8 harlins, and 8 guppies wirth 2 or 4 rams and a cleaner fit in a 20 gal. which cleaner fish is best and how many
I might just do one ram - if they start breeding it could get rough.
LOVE THIS!!!!
How many rams could I put with some rummy nose tetras or neons for example in a 90L
I would either go with one or makes sure if I did two or three they were females (or a pair).
I was just about to set up a 20 gallon long planted tank, and I really want to have some chiclids in there. I noticed you mentioned the rainbow chiclids, how many could I put in the tank?
If you don't want them to breed, I would only add one. If you add multiples and a pair forms, that could be a problem for the other fish in the tank.
Would gouramis, a female betta, and a few less-aggressive cichlids be able to live together? I'm considering.
Possibly. I would lean towards less aggressive gouramis like pearls, honey or female dwarf gouramis.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you for the information.
