Many different designs for each type of project are also included. For example, there are hundreds of designs ruclips.net/user/postUgkxb2mhCug-GkCWrq69Ce2I0nM0D4QpxAqu for outdoor buildings, from small sheds all the way up to a complete stable. Choose whatever type of shed or storage house is right for you. Pick from fancy ones or more utilitarian designs.
I’m loving the Home projects your doing!
Thanks!
Hi. Great video for someone with limited experience. I did see how you mounted to the foundation to the deck but would've like to see more on the foundational supports on the outermost portion (away from house) end. Thank you!
ANOTHER QUICK TIP FOR HANGERS-
If they won’t stay on when you squeeze them, there’s a single spike on each end at the top that you can tack into the timber.
hope this helps someone :)
I was going to comment this but...
Thanks for this
I WAS GOING TO SAY THE SAME & TO BE HONEST, YOU WOULDA THOUGHT ONE OF THEM WOULDA KNOWN THAT LITTLE TRICK SEEING AS IT'S BUILT INTO THE JOIST HANGER BY THE MANUFACTURER, EH?
If you're going to fasten joist hangers with screws then be sure to use structural screws designed to replace hanger nails. The screws in the video are ordinary deck screws which are not designed for this purpose.
I’m enjoying all your videos guys .. really interesting and fun to watch .
Thanks Wayne, appreciate that !
Great video thank you. My wife and I are new home owners and I want to rebuild the deck that's existing, adding a ground level portion. This was the perfect video for us. I've watched a lot of your other videos, although I'm a welder and not in construction I use Milwaukee tools and appreciate your coverage of their tools and it's nice to see how some of the pros tackle these jobs.
Ricky- we have built this same deck many times. We have them still standing after decades. Im glad this video helped you out. Franky has 40 years building experience and knows his stuff.
Do not build a deck below grade . you will regret. Please research. That's what concreat is for
This was so awesome!
So glad you liked it, thank you!
Hello Zander, favorite shot of the build haha. No seriously though great job guys. Thanks for being so informational.
Nice work! Very entertaining too!!
Thank you James!
What is missing from this is the weed control, and natural koi pond under the deck would be a great idea.
I would have liked to have seen the "melting" the screw heads in. Awesome porch!
Ive done that on my other composite deck video
ruclips.net/video/EmeHmRjeL_Q/видео.html but go to 6:55 to see the heat gun trick. Neat and works well.
Love this, thank you
The intro was hilarious! Very informative video aswell👌
A heavy rain and those folks will have a mosquito breeding pond below their deck. Need drainage.
Just wanted to ask same question :) where does the water goes? There is a slight hill next to deck so more then just rain water gets in there...
MORE WOODWORKING! MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE! GOOD JOB!
Thanks! will do!
Love the clip show at the beginning. :)
Damn u a good boss, wish I had someone like you
Appreciate it Justin, thanks
Great video Stan!
Thanks again Rufus! Appreciate your support
Great vid, you got alot of skills Stan
Not me- my guys have the skills.
No moisture barrier between pressure treated and concrete. No concrete footings and stirrup supports. No drainage taking water way from under the deck. Secret screws so you can’t remove boards the get to structure. Hummm, no thanks!
Great video! TY
Frankie deserves a raise.
Yes he does
Great job guys. And you don’t Necessarily need drainage under a deck like that less water table is high. That was just a question asked.
Its on pure sand to
looks good
Thank you!
hi from Bryn Mawr!!! Frankie is an inspiration!! awesome
Hi Thor, thanks for watching !
Should pack the ledger board off of the foundation 15mm so water doesn't sit where they meet at cause premature wear
Hi, and wow. A below-ground deck with a slope. Where is the retaining wall video? I would love to see it after 5 years. Thanks for the videos.
You need to look into Evolution Wheels for your skid steers! Maybe talk to them about doing a sponsor video. They have a RUclips channel where they put skid loader in harsh mud and don’t get stuck.
Ive seen those but don't have a contact for the company. that would be a cool video
If your stuck in the sun all day
A fan can be a god send
Look into a Bo wrench for pulling a deck board in when there is a bow in the board. Fantastic, simple product.
Bowrenchdirect.com
Thanks for the tip !
The treatment for treated wood penetrates only a small distance into the wood. When you cut the wood you are exposing untreated wood. That is why they want you to do extra steps when you cut it. It's a pain, but it makes sense. Not saying it's done frequently.
Would it make sense to paint over the joists and framing with exterior waterproofing paint/stains to extend the life of the deck before putting on the top boards? Or is that just overdoing it?
You need to put blocking between the foundation,so your face board have air behind it so in doesn’t rot. Window rap works good on top of floor joist so you don’t rot. Just a thought.
Thanks for the suggestion, appreciate it !
Ask This Old Tile Man I think my question may relate to your comment. My question is water management. How does the water “run off” underneath so it does not form a place for water to gather, stay, and even rise during heavy rainfall? **Especially if building this in places that have 4-6 inches rock on surface and heavy clay underneath that dramatically inhibits drainage of water??? Thanks for any input..
Sun That Never Sets my point was when you have a rim board against the foundation, water will get trap between rim board and foundation,in turn will cause rot. So you need a gap between rim board. Same as the decking. Install a waterproof wrap on joists and that will help the joists from rotting.
You start from the house, so you avoid grinding
Don't those hangers have a spike that you hit with a hammer to hold them in place?
I was going to say that as well.
Not these-but most do
@@Dirtmonkey you can see the spike in your video, lol, but your way works too.
Do you back fill with soil next to the rim joists or maybe use an aggregate for drainage ?
Nice
Thanks Rafael !
Great video! How exactly did you secure the decking to the concrete stoop?
if they are the kind of guys that did that in the first place.... they didnt.
I always smack a nail in the top end of the joist when I'm working by myself.
Yep- that works to
Just a quick question: why aren't you using ratchet straps to pull your boards together?
You probably know this, but there are ratchet straps for flooring with something like little hooks on the end that I use to pull my boards together (composite and natural materials). Also works really well on ridiculously warped boards... Greetings from a German carpenter/ framer and self employed contractor.
Another really good video. How did you fasten the boards to the concrete pad?.
If you’re going to picture frame a deck would it be better to picture frame with a lighter or darker material? I know it’s preference but usually when I see a picture frame deck it’s with an offset color.
Now your cinder blocks on the center of the deck will sink in with all the water from that shower. Ground will come soft you should put a footing no matter what.
other than that good job.
Thanks Mario !
Agreed, my first thought watching this video was where are your support blocks and or footings?
All I see are some off-cuts stacked up in a few places. ???
What is the average price per square foot should a subcontractor ask for when building a composite deck. We don't have to do anything but set footers and build decks
Frankie does great work! Did you put posts under the outside edge or you floating the outside?
Floating the outside
I’m studying how to do this, and wonder how to figure the dig out trench to get the correct height. I have a 4” high concrete patio that I want to butt against.
The deck is better then the home.
What screws did you use with the joist hangers? Are they structural screws?
no torching the screw holes?? and assuming the torch makes the holes disappear would torching the cut ends of the boards make them resemble the factory top surface of the deck boards?
Awesome video man it's nice to see somebody do decent good work is a lot of clown that there it would just throw that thing on the dirt and walk away and charge an arm and a leg for it
Thank you!
Have you done a follow up video @stanley?
Now your a deck Builder? 😰 Iam lost I thought landscaping was your gig. how many decks a year you building ?
hello what state are you did you need a permit in NEW JERSEY specially in Bergen county you need permit for everything
Would water pooling under the deck be a problem? We're considering building one but I don't want to create a mosquito habitat next to my house.
Why didn't you run a breaker board vs dealing with seams?
When do you dig footings vs using concrete blocks?
Supposed to use nail for joist hangers. Screws have a low shear strength.
Structural screws...
kids if you're watching this, those epoxy coated deck screws are not structural. Screws can shear apart. you have to use nails on the hardware or strong-tie SD connector screws (they make 1.5" or 2.5" lengths) www.fastenersplus.com/10-x-1-1-2-Strong-Tie-SD-Connector-Screw-Class-55-Galvanized-Pkg-100?gclid=CjwKCAjwmf_4BRABEiwAGhDfSXUMNIX3I31qH1nq7phTRA8QWzeE1iL6KAhPcPT13Xzfl81XgmqxFBoCIE4QAvD_BwE
And galvanised.. this video is pretty flawed but not my house not my business 🤷♂️
How do you address the drainage?
Should have named the video, “Below, ground level deck.”
Hello Stan, this is a great video, one of the better quality ones I have found on RUclips. I would like to build a small deck over an existing cement patio in my back yard. From what I can tell, it seems as though I'll need to remove the patio in order to have clearance for footings and the framing of the deck as there isn't much height between it and the rear entry door of the home. During your construction process, I noticed you guys were using screws in stead of nails to build the framing and hang the joist with. Were those structural screws? I seem to to be getting a lot of mixed information on the web as to whether or not screws or nails are the correct fastner for framing a deck. It seems as though the majority of builders lean toward an exterior galvanized 3" nail for the framing portion and then screws to hold down the deck boards due to their superior tensile strength. What was your reasoning for this? And also, did you guys do the design or did you have an architect or engineering firm do the design for you. I live in New York and the building codes and local code enforcement here are a nightmare to deal with, I was thinking of having a firm design for me and I could build it. Any assistance would be appreciated!
It’s a pleasure to watch quality work being performed!!
Outstanding outcome!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️🇺🇸😁😁😁😁
Thanks- Franky knows his stuff for sure
What do I do if my sliding glass door is not high enough off the ground for my header board? I can’t dig due to concrete patio
you grinded the pad down so does this leave a lip at the picture frame nearest to the building?
also if you didnt leave a gap inbetween the boards and picture frame will the picture frame become loose from expansion?
We ground down the entire pad
Wouldn't it have been better to use the concrete as your starting point & work out from there for your height? That would've eliminated the need for grinding the concrete.
When mounting the sill plate to the foundation, will tapcons also work? Or do you need concrete anchor bolts?
Graham K tap cons are too brittle
I was going to ask the same, how the composite gets anchor to the concrete section?
Ideally you would drill into the foundation, using set xp epoxy and all thread that you can bolt onto.
I've been planning on tearing my deck down and using composite. Not to mention its far from being code, plus the headers are rotting. I couldn't figure out how I wanted to hide the ends, I didn't want to buy one of those "skirt" boards, they are stupidly expensive. WHY didn't I think of a picture frame? Thank you....Lol.
I thought you would have used pavers here since you're at grade.
A few questions:
Ground contact rated PT lumber?
Approved joist hanger fasteners?
Heat gun on composite/pvc decking?
Drainage under deck, or will the shower just create a pool?
Ledger flashing?
Posts set on grade? Good thing you're not in a area that freezes...
hes in Minnesota, it deff freezes
Most treated 2” wide boards are for above ground use and NOT treated for ground contact. We consider anything within 6” of the soil as “wood to ground contact” unless the wood is labeled for GC.
Why would you screw joist hangers?
Uhhh...a roof support post w/no base/footing?!
I also clocked that....interested in their comments about that
Won't water pool below the deck since the yard slopes towards the deck
You do know that they make a thing called a bow wrench specifically for decks and hooks on your Joyce and pushes your bored in and leaves your screwing space open
Our board by the door fit just fine.
Why no weed barrier under deck? Brother in law is currently doing a 1 step deck and the convo came up if he should or shouldn’t put weed barrier down.
i really don't like those clips, rather the azek plug system its a little more time but the finish look is sweet..nice vid
Thanks!
I have watched a lot of your vids and you do awesome work, I absolutely loved the live wood counter top and the sink again sorry for the nitpicking
It’s just a warranty thing 😂 they’re protecting their own butts 🤣🤣
Hardened nails on hangers. Not screws.Screws shear off.
What's the part number of that Makita Grinding wheel for concrete?
not sure
What about water washing out the blocks you were setting your stringers on?
That was temporary until we got the support in
Would you be using new railroad ties or old ones??
We used treated lumber
is there drainage under the deck? Its below grade ? sandy loam? just asking for a friend .
Looks like they are slightly below the foundation there. May cause problems, especially if there is no drainage in that pit.
Its pure sand-good question though
what is deck sitting on ? No footings ?
Agreed, as I replied to another viewer, all I see are some off-cuts stacked up here and there.
Also, if I had to excavate that deep for a deck, I'd either recommend some sort of drainage system based on the soil conditions, or talk your customer into a flagstone patio or something instead.
I see major moister issues here.
great video but you should never screw a joist hanger
Thanks Nicholas
You can screw joist hangers with approved screws. For instance Simpson makes SD screws intended for this type of thing.
I want a ground level deck, but my house is on a slab, and I don't want a step up. I assume burying the deck is probably a bad idea in Pacific NW?
You should never bury a deck ever anywhere. It's what concreat is for
Use concrete or stone.
Would take me 3 years to dig that. Then sure, build it in a weekend.
That stuff is slippery in the winter time. You need traction tape on those plastic boards.
Not this stuff. Its not slippery at all in winter
second board from the corner just shows the problem with those clips because the line is way off u should have edited that out...look at the red box 3rd row out seem to the right ....sticks out like a sore thumb ,sorry for the criticism
Screws on the joist hangers, why? I thought hangers were always nailed because of the shear strength.
Literally why I'm even looking in the comments! Where's the galvanized hanger nails?? I thought I was crazy for a second .
I thought you had to nail or use structural screws on the joist hangers? What kind of screws did you use?
Structural screws
I bought instruction from woodprix and I build it very very cheap.
Thanks. I did the same. Those plans are just fantastic!
@@keshaborja8564 YES!
Frankie says "relax"
LOL
Should’ve put some landscaping cloth down with gravel before putting the deck in..
I don’t want to be “that guy”, but no way a termite company would give a repair warranty with a deck like that attached to the house. It’s inaccessible and will hold water as it’s below grade. Would’ve been much better off with a slab or paver patio.
So you put base material in for paver? But put a deck on some scrap wood? And attach it to the house. Did Logan Paul design this deck?
What are you talking about? scrap wood?
Hey stan. Not true. U can 45 a horizontal into ur top boad. And then rip matching angle into top of facia.
I'm not understanding the point of a ground level deck. It seems to have a lot of drawbacks, including a place for critters to nest and drainage issues. Also, since it is basically under ground for the most part, if you need to make any repairs to the wood frame, it's going to involve removing a lot of the deck boards. Why not just build a concrete patio and tile it with the tiles that look like wood? I've seen some that are very convincing. Also, leaving that thin strip a board width away from the wall instead of putting it up against the wall is just ugly. Sure, it would be more difficult to fit it around the pipes by the wall, but when you spend the money on something like that, it's worth the extra effort.
I kinda agree... but then again I've been thinking of making a ground level deck myself.. Mostly because of the comfort of wood over stone. But as you said concrete would be better in almost every way.
Yeah I was kind of wondering the same thing. The first problem I figure they're going to have is drainage. You don't want water sitting on the foundation like that and it will definitely sit in the bowl they made. I wouldn't say they're going to have a problem critters because I don't see a way for them to get under it but insects can get in the smallest of holes and nest under the boards.
Best way to do this to fix a drainage issue would be to create a small slope away from the home to a swale. Since you're already digging down you can taper off your hole so it isn't a bowl and rather a "ramp" that slopes away from the house. It'll still be ground level because the deck itself will be level but the ground underneath isn't. That might clear up any misconceptions. Even though he didn't build it this way, that would be the way to correct a drainage issue.
wait what? Aren't you in a freezing zone? Most building codes state you can't attach a deck to a house if you don't have footings below frost depth! If you don;t want to dig those footings, then you can let your decking float by not attaching to the house ... How are you going to deal with that? Also how about drainage under deck and/or weeds?
Just a weekend warrior asking because I am about to start my own
Actuallyt your right- but where we built this does not have building codes. We are freezing and you should Not attach a floating deck to a structure. BUT in our area its PURE sand. We don't get much ground movement from frost-actually none. So it works for our area.
What about when it rains
FIRST STAN U ARE TRULY AMAZING
Thanks for sharing! Loved the video. The only suggestion I would have is to tell your camera guy not to move the camera so much. It made me dizzy and I was so nauseous by the end. No joke lol!
Thanks Rose and thanks for the feedback !
@11:26 Why would you leave the concrete slab in there in the first place?!? The remodel crew that did my house before I bought it did the same thing. Now, there's a water leak under the slab and I have to rip out the whole blasted deck to get to it!
Hey....if you had a water leak without the slab, you'd still have to pull the deck off to access it, so why would the concrete slab be the issue? I'm laying part of our deck onto concrete and we're scratching our heads quite how to do it.
@@rochellesumeray4213 Depends. Boards sitting flat on a slab make a very nice channel for water to pool and run straight up against your house/foundation instead of otherwise dissipating into the ground.
That Milwaukee sounds rough better get it checked out
All those new brush-less M18's sound rough even when new. A Milwaukee rep and i were talking one day, he asked me why i will not purchase an M18 impact. I schooled him on the feel, sound and torque of a competitor to a M18, the lab & real world use are real different.
dont get me wrong i am 100% Milwaukee my truck and job trailer show it inside. Brush-less suck if the maker cheap's out, almost started to switch to M18 tho.
Those Milwaukees have performed amazing for me- year after year
