I am an artist living and working in France. I learned the techniques of the Atelier of the Nineteenth century and now I try to share some of my knowledge with the rest of the world, because I think that beauty still has an important role to play in artistic creation. I do this all the time and it helps me a lot. I was horribly stuck on several paintings that I couldn't finish. Through contemplation, I relaized that I am a narrative artist and if there is no story, I don't know what to do. I am not able to just make pictures of beautiful things or landscapes.I was trying to paint just what was in front of me to develop skills---but had to take a rather long break from that. There has to be at least symbolism and a tale to tell. Once I figured that out, the pieces went forward to a happy ending.

I paint in natural light and I find, if I wait until dusk - then it gives me another perspective - perhaps it is similar to squinting your eyes. I find if I meditate on the painting in half dark, I get some good ideas as to what to work on next.

Excellent suggestion. You will naturally visualize ( in small or maybe big ways) your actions that are inspired during this time. And we know the power of visualization

So true. I always feel rushed to get my easel set up and start painting. I will try this. Writing notes definitely helps when solving complex problems. I do this for other projects at home and at work so why not use this approach for paintings too? Very interesting to hear your thoughts Florent thank you 👍

6:05 I have a massive 4 ft by 5 ft painting that I'm painting in all four directions. Constantly rotating it and is driving me mad. I'll be done in nine years.

Florent, your video itself has an impressive design. At 3:50, you appear as an organic part of the whole composition, standing in front of your painting.

As long as I don't have to take my notes in French, I'll be fine. I currently have a painting that keeps trying to twist and escape under my hands and I'm about to give up on this one and simply move on to something else for now.
