Glad you are doing this yourself. I have heard "If you screw up it is only metal, cut it out and do it again", but each time is more work and I try to avoid unnecessary work as much as possible. Looks good.
I wish that my first try at body/metal work on my 63 f100 floorboards and toeboards turns out half as good Craig. I'm a journeyman motorcycle mechanic with 30 years experience, but never done anything like this either. I've had the truck for 28 years and you have inspired me to get cracking on it and start enjoying working on it again. Keep up the good work, I wished I could have bought the 61 4x4 from you, but realize that the one I have is going to be a lot of fun to do as well. Cheers.
For not being super experienced in welding, I give you 2 thumbs up. Great work, I got caught up in the video and was ready to jump in and help. You are doing great!
Yep, like my dear ol' dad always said: I can give you pointers and direction, but I can't give you experience; you have to get that the hard way, by doing it yourself. He also said that the definition of experience is getting a result you did NOT want enough times until the result IS what you want. Maybe not word-for-word, but the point is there. Great job and keep accumulating that experience!
Love seein' people our age tackle projects like this that are outside their comfort zone and new... Some time this winter I have to replace the rear frame sections on my Malibu; that'll be a learning experience for sure! Thanks for being one of the channels that inspired me to start my own! Go check it out sometime! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Shenanigans, Wrench, Repeat
I remember my Dad cutting the roof off a brand new 64 2dr hardtop after it had an interior fire, welded on a new roof, leading it in. Painted it candy apple red and put in a new white upholstery, it was just drop dead gorgeous
I am no body man so that trick with the copper plate backing the gap to fill it in was pretty cool. looking forward to you getting this beauty on the road.
Great work. Keep plugging away. My son and I are building his first truck a 72 F100, and we are doing the body work and welding right now also. My first 2 cars I bought were also 64 Galaxies, and I still have my second one. After his truck is done we will get the Galaxie on the road again. Your drive is inspiring. You can’t learn if you don’t do. If it’s broke you can’t broke it anymore. Just figure it out how to fix it.
You're doing it. The best way to learn. Screw the haters. Sure it may not be as good as a professional, but it will hold and you can have some pride that you did it yourself. Well done Craig.
I hear "I'm not a metal guy" but know it or not, you are well on the way to becoming one! Very nice work as done pretty much with materials on hand! By the way, you don't need an English wheel to stretch metal into a specific curve. My first try would be to find a donor from anything available which has a similar curve. A better way would be to use a sand bag and hammer to beat the metal 'till it looks right...You can make your own sand bag, with play sand and leather. I made mine with leather from a cheap welder's apron, with canvas on the back. Had to get a show shop to stitch it, as my Mom wouldn't let me even come in the house with it...
Good job, I've been thinking about picking up a MIG for my F100 project as I've had a friend help with most of the welding to this point. Digging the Galaxie builds as well, but your F100 is what keeps me watching.
I'm definitely with you on that bro, I'm not the biggest metal guy either, but I do give it a lot of tries. Proud of how that turned out because it looked good to me.
Good work.Try spray some light coat of primer on the exposed metal to keep it from rustingNow a days you can get epoxy, metal strips with holes and after gluing it over an eroded piece of body with holes you can use kitty fibre and filler to repair .Specially good for roofs where there is a fire hazard
Experience, that's how you get it.... Just in this video I can see that your getting better, I road to high school in a red 64 X L just like yours! They are drop dead beautiful cars......
Very impressive, especially for your first time. I just bought a 64 Galaxie fastback, and it has a vinyl top that I will be taking off. The car is not an original vinyl top car, so I hope I don't have a nightmare surprise when it comes off. Yeah I know, everyone laugh and say a prayer. I love seeing what you did here.
Pb blaster is the shit for rusty parts! I use it on my 2003 Ram 3500 Cummins crewcab dually. When you have to pull the back axles to change brake rotors that blaster stuff makes getting old rusted bolts and nuts apart very easy.
I don't watch much if any tv anymore just you car guys on RUclips. But I watch you on my TV and I can't hit like or comment. After this show and watching the effort that you put in that roof skin. I had to get out my phone look you up and hit the like button. Something I'll be doing from now on. I've been following you for about 3 months now keep up the great work.
Bud I like all the videos it wish I had the nerve to tackle some rust repair on my truck. Maybe after seeing a couple more of ur videos I'll try it too
No you are not a metal worker now but you are getting there and you will never learn how watching RUclips you are getting real experience and from the school of hard work. I am impressed that you jumped in to this and with every piece I am sure you will be getting better and faster because you obviously want to and that it what it really takes to get better. You can't teach want to, and you can't get experience any other way that the way you are doing it. It would be great if you had someone to tell you all the tricks but you are going to learn them because you are not just slopping it together.
Not sure if you know this old trick for welding up small holes in sheet steel. Form a small piece of copper sheet to fit tight to the back of the hole....the weld won't stick to the copper backer and it also acts as a bit of a heat sink if you don't go crazy welding in one area. BTW...great job ....proud of you young man
Another way to fill the holes in your patch panel after it is attached is brazing with gas . does not overheat the panel and warp it and only a small area needs to be heated . Just a thought . otherwise good job young man ...
I know you said that roof gutter will be getting filler but, fix that offset ! Whenever you see something like that, fix it ! The labor it will cost you, will be well spent and burned into your brain. It's a valuable lesson and will change your approach to the things you do like this in the future. It will make you much better at what you are doing. When I was young, I worked in a custom body shop. Harley's paint and body in Hollywood Florida. Harley used to work with George Barris back in the 50's. Every time I made a mistake, no matter how small, he made "me" fix it. And I tell you I made many when I first started, believe me ! But after many mistakes and repairs, that were a pain in my ass, There was a point when the mistakes seem to disappear. Or should I say became so infrequent that they just seemed to go away. I became faster and more proficient in my work. Yes, fix that mistake right away ! It will make you a way better metal worker. And a better everything else when it comes to planning things out. I don't mean to lecture you, I'm just sharing some knowledge passed down to me from some "Old Timers". The funny thing is, I'm 70 now. I guess that makes "me" the "old Timer" now.
Really nice job Craig! Winter is coming on fast here in New England. A Very necessary wood working job I have had to hand off to a pro. I can't learn how to do it on this job! There is so much to do afterwards. It does cost a bunch though, sigh. I want to see this red big block Galaxy back on the road.
i use to do this for a living i learn to hate rust i'm glad all my projects are rust free got real lucky with rigs got most for free and no rust i pay for a rig and it ends up being a rust bucket but it is still cool to drive because it is nice and clean body still has factory paint but it has rust and the patina on it is perfect just a little suffice rust on the main body just has rust in the kicker panels and corner of the cab but then again i have 2 perfect cabs one with factory air so some day i will change it . u did good for the first time i would wield the low spots grind it down so it looks like it was never dun that is how we had to do in the restoration shop even like floor pans underside has to look like it was never dun i have a little mini belt sander works great for things like this just be carful or it f a job up
Dang right it takes patience to be any good at metalworking. I can do all kinds of precision fit things, like with engines using feeler gauges and micrometers and the like. But after many tries I just decided I suck at metalworking. It takes too much artistic skill which I don't have. Give me numbers and measurements and I can spend all day. Even things that require fine balancing. But a sculptor I ain't. You are developing a true skill doing that bodywork.
Looks good to me but I’m no body guy. I’ve been watching Fitzee on you tube and he had some realy good tips on old school minimal tools techniques. Check out his way of panel replacement it’s pretty cool
Good job On the roof of the car It is hard to do what you did a great job I have a 66 Ford Mustang I'm went to put new quarters on I haven't done it yet
A good friend of mine ( who in the end I call Dad #2) Got me started welding....The rest! Self taught...Only way to learn is do it! I now can weld rotted in half Convertibles back together....Keep it up!
Craig, I absolutely enjoy your channel. The 64 Galaxie 500 XL has always been my all time favorite car. I remember when these cars were new on the showroom floor ( I was nine). Good work, you're very talented mechanic. We learn by our mistakes. Looking forward to seeing this car on the road.
Glad you are doing this yourself. I have heard "If you screw up it is only metal, cut it out and do it again", but each time is more work and I try to avoid unnecessary work as much as possible. Looks good.
Your a very talented young man keep up the awesome work!!! And keep the videos coming. 62 yr old fan here!!
you are doing a great job i have been building cars for 30 years its nice to see young guys doing what me and my friends did good luck

Your metal work and welding have improved immensely.
For not being super experienced in welding, I give you 2 thumbs up. Great work, I got caught up in the video and was ready to jump in and help. You are doing great!

You're helping an old man with the shakes who's welding in 3 bumpsides floorboards and cab supports, thanks. Now to find some copper plate..

Looking good. Nobody's a metal guy till they get exp.your getting it now. Keep on keeping on
Great job Craig... you have done a good job on the roof. This is coming from a professional body man.
I am no body man so that trick with the copper plate backing the gap to fill it in was pretty cool. looking forward to you getting this beauty on the road.
Great job! Metal work can be frustrating and tedious but you seem to have the patience for it. Can’t wait to see it finished.
Great work. Keep plugging away. My son and I are building his first truck a 72 F100, and we are doing the body work and welding right now also. Love your videos, very informative. Had a 64 galaxie 500 F/B back in 67, wish I could afford a project now. Keep up the great work.
It's rough working out there by yourself . Always easier with company alongside . Keep on keeping on !!
Bad ass Craig!! Your killing it!! Can’t wait to race!

Nice work Craig, I was a body man for 20 years and you're doing a nice job.
You did a good repair ....................I've been in the Auto body business for over 35 yrs.....those 64 Gal's are killer looking cars done up right
I'm definitely with you on that bro, I'm not the biggest metal guy either, but I do give it a lot of tries. Proud of how that turned out because it looked good to me.
Really looking good so far an its all metal that's the best way to bring them back to life

Pb blaster is the best, it even takes the glue residue off the best
I can't explain how seriously I've waited for this video
Experience, that's how you get it.... Just in this video I can see that your getting better, I road to high school in a red 64 X L just like yours! They are drop dead beautiful cars......

True inspiration I like what your doing with this car bud
I don't watch much if any tv anymore just you car guys on RUclips. But I watch you on my TV and I can't hit like or comment. After this show and watching the effort that you put in that roof skin. I really do appreciate that. Thank you for the support
Nice job as a beginner. Can't wait until you finish

Take your time your young and have the know how . Just think it through you will do just fine.

I appreciate that!
Bud I like all the videos it wish I had the nerve to tackle some rust repair on my truck. Maybe after seeing a couple more of ur videos I'll try it too
I gotchu Devon. There will be more videos on metal work for sure.

use a small wire wheel or narrow flap wheel in that rain channel to finish that weld you will not regret it later
Another way to fill the holes in your patch panel after it is attached is brazing with gas . does not overheat the panel and warp it and only a small area needs to be heated . Just a thought . otherwise good job young man ...
Great job! You have the skills to get better.
damn, that wasnt as hard as i thought it would be. wish i had a decent metal shop around me. id be building all kinds of stuff.
I know you said that roof gutter will be getting filler but, fix that offset ! Whenever you see something like that, fix it ! Can’t wait to do this to my bronco I have. It needs rockers floors and quarters but it’s pretty solid for a northern truck. Indiana
NNNNICE! Looks great Craig!
Thanks!
This is exactly what I need to do on my 64 falcon hardtop. Just need a donor roof.
Damn nice quality work! Makes me want to get my lazy ass back to work on my scout.
Great Job Craig!
Killing it Craig 😎 no BS , mistakes and all , came out great 👍
Yeaahaaa bad mans getting big sponsors now hell yeah man
Metal work looks awesome 👏🏻
Really nice job Craig! Winter is coming on fast here in New England. A Very necessary wood working job I have had to hand off to a pro. I can't learn how to do it on this job! There is so much to do afterwards. It does cost a bunch though, sigh.

Not a metal or body guy? Certainly becoming one! Good work
You keep saying you aren't a body guy. From what I've seen You've done a pretty decent job at it. Looks Great! Enjoyed the video! 😎 Wes, in Oregon
Great job so far.
Thanks
You are doing a great job, keep up the good work!!!
Its lookin pretty good Craig, Im itchin to do some work on my corvair not only am I tryin to learn welding but also diagnosing my welder...

Very cool video and project thanks for posting!! 😎👍🏼❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
good ol copper trick!
I watch your videos. I like them. The roof line are tricky to work with.
Great job! Lookin good!
I have the same grey button up shirt. They are awesome
You should invest in English wheel
Could have formed a nice clean piece.
yeah i was thinking that would be a better idea. hell even hammering it out one and smoothing it with a skim coat wouldnt be a bad idea.
Southeast U.S., right? The only place that has that kind of ferocious rust! Even Rustbelt cars don't look that bad.
Awesome man great work!
Good job my friend!
Nice nice work.
Great job brother
Good stuff as usual Craig 👍🏼
I think you are a very talented young man. You also have the right mindset for that talent to work for you. I'll be watching for the next one.
Great job.
I just looked for your name earlier and nothing new posted then out of nowhere I got a subscription notification
Quality content as usual.
Looking good man
i think it came out awesome man
Looking good
Looks good to me but I’m no body guy. I’ve been watching Fitzee on you tube and he had some realy good tips on old school minimal tools techniques. Check out his way of panel replacement it’s pretty cool
Fun fact the copper also wicks away heat furthur reducing warping if you get a thicker piece of copper
Looks great. Very little filler needed.
Good job On the roof of the car It is hard to do what you did a great job I have a 66 Ford Mustang I'm went to put new quarters on I haven't done it yet
Have never performed this myself , but just wondering would it be feasible to cut the whole roof off & weld the replacement back on the vehicle ?
Good job!
Looks good!!!
Good work man!
A good friend of mine ( who in the end I call Dad #2) Got me started welding....The rest! Self taught...Only way to learn is do it! I now can weld rotted in half Convertibles back together....Keep it up!
