Just found your channel and it's all interesting, inspiring, well presented -- and totally unrelatable for me 😅☺️. I've just bought my first ever camera and have no idea about technical stuff - I wanted to ask where/how you learned those things, were you self taught or did you study somewhere? Sorry if this has already been covered in another video and I know the question is not really related to this one.
Great video btw. I do have a couple of questions. 1. In another video you discouraged people from having too many different types of photography on their website ( portraits, landscape, weddings...etc..etc..) why not completely remove the portraits portion from your website since your neiche is strictly food? You mentioned there is a tie as your clients could see it as a potential headshot for their business, but this kinda went against what you recommended people ought to do. 2. Your "Food II" page is amazing. The photos are just Dynamite. They're Soo good they make your "Food I" page look like amateur hour. Why keep both? I don't ask these questions with any malice behind them. Your real-world application and no-nonsense youtube videos have been incredible to watch. I think more "influencers" need to take a page out of your book. Thank you for all of the videos you've put out. Take care.
for point one, I need to follow my own advice haha. They should be removed, but some part of me refuses even though I know its for the best.
In my opinion, food 2 is kinda average work compared to food one. Loads of people do it and it gets me little more than editoral work , instagram likes, and follows from food bloggers, which is low pay. Where as food one gets me big ad campaigns and recognition from those in the industry.
If I were truly following my own advice, I would remove everything but food one. But the fear kicks in haha.
@@TinHouseStudioUK I agree. Food 1 is very good and has more character than food 2, which is also good, but many people do that kind of stuff.
@@TinHouseStudioUK Scott, thank you for your response. I'd like to take back what I said about "Food II making Food I look like amateur hour." Food II looks incredible, don't downplay that, however after going thru the images again, Food I is far superior. Why?? Food I has your style written all over it. It took me taking a second look to realize that. Food II - I've seen those types of images everywhere I look and although they're beautiful, they're missing "Soul." Also....you're pairing of images for double spreads, that's pure GOLD for advice. My style of photography is on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, but picking out all of the "Gold Nuggets" you drop video to video, I've done a complete 180. Thank you again. J.
Thanks for more portfolio insights. But I have one question. Ever since you reviewed my food portfolio (which helped me immensely), I recall that you said that you favored a 4x5 crop on your images, and... I likewise have now come to crop most all mine at 4x5. It just seems to enhance an image, and make it appear more professional. But...
(now the question) - I noticed in your video that some of your paired portfolio images are in two different formats. One looks like it's cropped at 4x5, but the other is slightly different - taller/slimmer (I think maybe... 4x3?) - on the British snacks, Bombay mix vs. the biscuits/cookies, for example. Just wondering why the 4x3? And more importantly - wouldn't it be better to match the same format in a pair displayed on the same page? Just looks a bit odd to me to have different format crops on the same spread.

I don't know if it was intentional or not (or maybe it was and I didn't hear you mention it) but the SpaghettiO image on the front of your portfolio plays nicely with all the curves and circles in your name.

Great advice and interesting to hear your thought process. Couple questions - Do you think it's weird on the donut photo to have the 'gutter' run right though the center of the image? And some of the images facing each other are different sizes like the 'Indian Snack' facing the Biscuits (cookies), is that weird?
Good question! It it were being printed I would re arrange a lot of this. I don't personally have a problem with the different sizes, but that is personal opinion more than fact I think.
