    Actually this mouse saved my wrist from serious pain. I am a graphics designer and I work on projects sometimes 10 hours a day. Plus guess what I'm doing on my free time... I USE THE COMPUTER!!! So yes, it really *is* a big deal.

      I could consider an angled Mouse provided that i could still have like 12+ buttons that isn't just a fucking Numpad glued to the side , Macros/advanced Bindings, the only Sensors and Switches worth having, Et Cetera.
      Since that's not likely to happen my operating strategy involves ergonomic angling if my limbs, keeping loose and calm, and taking short breaks regularly even though i've basically lived my life in front of a Computer.

      Hi, let me give you an advice - as I am graphic designers for 15 years now myself. The biggest thing you can do for your wrist is actually using high sensitivity. That way you can rest your wrist for basically the entire day, cause your movement with the mouse gonna be almost none. I measured mine and I move mouse 3 cm to go from one side of the screen to another. With that, you will also be able to perform a lot of tasks faster. It has a lil learning curve, you will be missing the right spot a bit, before you get the aim, but within 3 days I would say you should be able to get used to it and it will change your life for good.

      i have actually been using a moderately high DPi setting for many years, infact.
      not for that reason, but either way.
      have been using 3200 for quite some time. i'm just used to using that. where trying to strike a balance between having precision and being able to quickly move from one Display to another, or just make quick movements in games.
      on my 1200p Display it's about what you describe, a few Centimeters to cover the Display. on my 1440p Display it's more like 5.5-6.
      i never bought into the religion of using like, 400 or something. that just makes using your computer annoying, and trying to move distances that extreme quickly is just silly xd
      i think Claw grip style also helps a lot, because small movements are handled by my fingers, rather than Wrist or Arm.

      Sounds More like you are prone to the injury, I passed 5 years as a graphics designer after the 5 years of computer school work then working full time with a computer and like you entertained myself with my PC daily.
      And 18 hours a day with a mouse.
      Never had a single problem with my arm wrist or fingers.
      I injured my back first.

      Yes! This is what I was thinking, I'm an artist / graphic designer and can spend a lot of time on the old Mac and recently had noticed that I am getting a sore wrist at the end of the day, then I thought if there were mice that could be more accommodating to say holding a pencil ... Anyway I reckon that I would like to try this mouse out!

      It's a minority of the total population using computers a lot, but there are plenty of people who can get massive issues from traditional computer mice and keyboards, which is why the ergo market exists. My dad (ex-building inspector) got it so bad from his office work that he had to have an operation on his mouse arm, and afterwards was only able to use vertical mice for any serious length of time.
      Not terribly common, but can be dang serious for some. If your arm is sending you warning signs from prolonged mouse or keyboard usage, maybe look into the possibility of trying out something that might be more ergonomic. Arms are really really useful things after all, you should take good care of them. =)

    I'm a programmer and gamer, so I'm on the computer all day. I have both the MX Vertical and a G502 mouse on my desk and plugged in so that I can switch between them on a whim. I have to say the reduced wrist pain from using the MX Vertical makes the reduced number of features in comparison to the G502 definitely worth it (and I do use all the extra features of the G502 when I do use it, so it's not like they are useless to me). I actually use the MX Vertical even for gaming most of the time, which I hear most people say they can't do, so maybe I'm just weird haha. Honestly, the only time I feel the need to switch over to the G502 is when I'm playing a multiplayer FPS, which isn't often for me anyway. I actually didn't feel that steep learning curve that Linus mentioned. I was able to use it pretty quickly and effectively within a couple hours. I can imagine having the "fake click" problem James was having if I was using it on a smooth, hard surface, but I use it on a cloth mouse pad and don't have that problem so maybe that's the difference. I do share the gripe of not being able to reach the forward button easily, but I have that problem on all mice so yeah. Anyway, I love the mouse and I definitely think it was worth the $100.

    From the moment I saw Linus standing with a suit at that angle, I was already waiting for him to utter the word "enhance".

  • @DKannji
    @DKannji 6 лет назад +561

    The ghost clicking happens because of the verticality of the mouse, when you click you also push the mouse however slightly. With a classic mouse you click down in a way where even your palm prevents movement. The vertical mouse requires either a heavier base or pads with a harder grip on the bottom to prevent further ghost clicking.

    So I've been using this mouse for over a year now. Here are my thoughts:
    I got used to it in like a week. It was strange at first but now I do graphical work and even game with it. Granted I am not playing CSGO with it, for things like low diamond soloque on League, it's good enough for me. The battery life is just absurdly good. In over a year, I've probably charged this thing 10 times at most. Also since its USB C, I always have a cable free nearby.
    A slight note though: unlike most people who use their mouse by moving their arms through their elbow and shoulder as Linus pointed out in the video, I have always used my mice through wrist only movements. So for me, this mouse was easy to get used to as this is how I've always used my mice.

    • @ozziekhoo
      @ozziekhoo 4 года назад

    • @bored88888888
      @bored88888888 2 года назад +1

      @@JimboTheJim Can't speak for him, but I'm in a similar boat in terms of using 99% wrist movements. Between the edge of my keyboard and the edge of my desk where my mouse sits is about 6 inches, 2.5 of which is taken up by the width of my normal mouse (a Corsair Harpoon), so you can imagine there's no sweeping movements over here.
      I don't use mouse acceleration, I just have my mouse pretty much permanently set to 2000 DPI. Even with 3 monitors, one flick of the wrist can bring me across 1.5 of them. If I've got to go from one edge to the other, then I just lift the mouse up slightly and flick it again. I very rarely have to go from one edge to the other though. Theoretically I could just press a button to go to 6000 DPI or something and be there instantly, but this is simpler and easier

    As for carpal tunnel, don't forget that not only is it a result of potential prolonged awkward positioning/repetative motions causing irritation to the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, but external compressive forces play a roll as well; that being resting the wrist on a surface while holding in extension resulting in the aforementioned external compressive force combined with prolonged positioning. I mention this because of another area of concern that the vertical mouse may jeopardize called guyon's canal which may lead to guyon's canal syndrome: compression of the ulnar nerve located between the pisiform and the hamate (while holding the vertical mouse, just observe the area or the hand that may rest on the mouse pad...or just google it). While keeping the wrist in neutral may be a good preventative measure against these syndromes, external compressive forces for prolonged periods MAY also cause SOME discomfort. Just a heads up for other potential injuries. I'll be trying this mouse out for myself for sure! It seems like a step in the right direction as far as preventing cumulative trauma disorders. Ok, done with being a super nerd now. Please excuse any typos. It's late where I am haha

      But how do you use your keyboard if the desk is on its right side (or left if you are left handed) as if the keyboard was on the same side as the mouse it would cause you to twist your left arm in an *EVEN* *MORE* *WORSER* position than just having it flat and if it was underneath the desk on the left side (same thing will happen on the right too) then it would fall as a keyboard is big and is meant to be *STATIONARY* (you could try gluing the keyboard under the desk) and even then you hands need to far apart not close together (you could glue a platform to the top or bottom of the desk for keyboard or mouse) and this is only applicable for gaming as when gaming you usually only have one hand on the keyboard and one for the mouse but for other tasks especially when you are typing stuff you can't have two hands on the keyboard (unless you want to damage one of your wrists or you choose to go one handed typing instead)

I used an arc mouse that I got with my Surface Laptop and liked the precision that I gained, but hated this weird mouse so I bought the vertical after testing it at Best Buy. I love it. I do not experience the same weird problems that James had and for me it feels like second nature. Since I am a pleb and used to trackpads I am not sorry that this mouse has less buttons. It is accurate, it is amazing to hold and I can work with it for hours upon hours.

    i use vertical mouse for gaming from 2 years now, and i play almost only competitive shooters. i will never come back to orizzontal mouse, vertical mouse is super comfortable and precise, for me is more natural to use than orizzontal one. is totally false that you have to squeeze it to push buttons, you just have to lay your hand on it and the weight of the hand (without pushing) is enough to push the button without moving it. when i need to be precise i use it like a pen, laying the side of the palm on the desk, and it allows me a lot of movement, cause the hand goes up and down instead of left right. test it, move your hand keeping the wrist firm and move it first left right and then up down, you'll notice that up down is way more natural and allow more radius. there are a lot of cheap vertical mouse on amazon, if you are interested just try it, at first is super weird, but when you get used on it is amazing. i hope more people will start to use them cause i want a serious gaming vertical mouse!

    My work bought me one of these about 6 months ago, super weird initially but I'm now a massive fan! You get just as accurate as a "normal" mouse over time.

      It's probably youtube's compression, look at the banding. Ugh disgusting, but that's the only way for streaming. Most people's internet isn't fast enough for higher bitrates.

    I've been using vertical mouses for years and can confirm that it took a few weeks to get used to. It's so much more comfortable now that I prefer to use my $20 Anker vertical mouse over a $100 gaming mouse. My suggestion is before you drop a hundred bucks on this expensive Logitech mouse, try out one of cheap ones from Amazon to see if it makes a difference. For mouse-intensive work/games you should do yourself a favor and look into this. The difference isn't night and day, but a small decision could have a big impact down the line.

      I have some issues with my wrist and my anker vertical mouse saved me pain and having to undergo corrective surgery. Though I don't game as much as I used to 10 or even 20 years ago this mouse works well enough for my less then pro level skills when I do get the time to.

      I'm using my Anker vertical mouse for some months now and I also find it nice to use after I got used to, I still use it only for work tbh, for gaming I still use my Logitech gaming mouse.

    I'm using Delux M618X vertical mouse 3 years. From the first day until today, there are no problems with accidental clicking, awkward sliding, or problems with dpi. It is bigger than other vertical mouses but it gives me abnormal comfort. I only changed before few months the left click button that I use most often and put a stronger battery (yes, I am an electronics engineer) and working great. So, I recommend vertical mice, but I suggest going to the store and trying them out before buying a mouse. It took me 10 different models to try to find the right one.

    I’m usually a really big fan of everything you do, but I feel like this could have been a lot more informative if you compared the vertical to similar style mice on Amazon. I personally have an Anker vertical mouse that costs around $20 and performs identically to how you described the Logitech vertical mouse. Watching this video turned me off to the Logitech vertical because of how it was framed as too expensive despite its health benefits, but including a segment about other cheaper vertical mice could have shown your viewers that cheap healthy options are also available. Love your work again, just thought more information could have been included!

    I watched this review when it was first uploaded and just bought one one sale a 2 weeks ago. Everything that James experienced is true with the accidental "click and move" I do it all the time. The ergonomic form factor and the epected quality of the Logitech brand were worth the cost and it is insanely conformatble compared to other mice when i working on a paper, powerpoint, or spreedsheet project for extended periods. SUCKS FOR GAMING THOUGH so I have a G602 to game with.

This time I forked out the extra dollars and treated myself - I'm already sold on these - but the Logitech MX Vertical is FANTASTIC. Great feel, buttons well space. SOLD from the moment I put it in my hand. Highly recommended. The learning curve for newbies is only say 15 minutes max.

  • @artisan002
    @artisan002 5 лет назад +8

    I keep thinking about this (for some reason, I've lately become frustrated with all my mice/trackballs). What I've gotten out of messing with one of these mice is that the missed clicks come from the fact that the mouse buttons are still engineered like you were clicking straight down. That works fine on a normal mouse because the surface the mouse is on bolsters it. There's no bolster to oppose your clicking movement, so the thing just wags a bit before anything happens. The only way aggressive clickers (which is most of us gamers) will make a vertical mouse work is if the clicks are oriented similar to or just like pistol triggers. The meat of your hand becomes that bolster. Obviously, you can't really arrange twin pistol triggers and have it work efficiently, but the direction of clicking force should simply be oriented according to the that design logic.

  • @speedracer2please

    I've used vertical mice for a while and got this one! The ghost clicking definitely goes away once you adjust. And I've had those way cheaper vertical mice too, but it's worth getting one solid one like this. I play a lot of FPS games on PC and I can only play them with this mouse, and not my razer gaming mouse. It helps my wrist and I no longer have any pain. The clicks are easy to perform and I'm not unnecessarily squeezing the mouse to click sideways as you suggested. I would recommend such a mouse for people who use computers often.. even for gaming tbh.

    Anker, and Sharkk have been making vertical mice both wired, and wireless versions for years, and are the only mice I will use, and they can be had for under $20, and I've never had fantom mouse click issues. hell if you want to go cheaper there are some no name Chinese clones with better sensors than the Anker, and Shark, but their top case leaves something to be desired, but you can use the bottom piece of the Chinese clones to make a franken mouse using an Anker, or Sharkk vertical top piece for the best of both worlds.

    • @FranklyPeetoons
      @FranklyPeetoons 6 лет назад

      Yes! Anker's only weakness is a fragile wheel button in some units. I get six months to two years out of an Anker vertical before the wheel breaks. I buy a few at a time, sometimes for as little as $11 each.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 6 лет назад

      peetoons I've never had issues with the Anker, or Sharkk wheels in any of my mice, but the clone one I got for transplant had a wheel so bad it would not even scroll proper because it was not even fully round, and the top shell of the clone was like that rubberized plastic that melts over time, and gets gooey, and/or sticky.

    • @razzakbane
      @razzakbane 6 лет назад

      Is there a specific model you'd recommend? I'm going to get one, I just am very cautious when it comes to spending so little on electronics

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 6 лет назад +1

      Razzakbane The Anker Wireless version goes upto 1600DPI, but you need to plug the usb dongle into the front of your case if you have a WiFi router near your PC, as it uses 2.4Ghz.
      Wireless: www.ebay.com/itm/Anker-2-4G-Wireless-Vertical-Ergonomic-Optical-Mouse-800-1200-1600DPI-5-Buttons/322224312385?epid=11019365006&hash=item4b0610d041:rk:1:pf:0
      But if you don't like wireless unless it's for a laptop like myself the wired version is fine, and I do have a stock wired Sharkk Basic(zero difference other than name) on my work PC on Xubuntu 18.04 with dual monitors, and gaming on Linux with it via STEAM/STEAM Play in my down time at work has been fine overall as well, just not as sensative as my franken mouse at home.
      wired: www.ebay.com/itm/Anker-Ergonomic-Optical-USB-Wired-Vertical-Mouse-1000-1600-DPI-5-Buttons-CE100/302768331927?epid=21016975296&hash=item467e661c97:rk:1:pf:0
      But as you might notice in the links provided, the wireless version can go down to 800 DPI if needed for some games, and also to note I've gotten my wireless one to track on just about every surface I've tried it on except glass, but I leave my wired ones on my desk at home, and my desk at work on black mouse mats so can't really comment on how good they track on odd surfaces like couch/chair fabric, leather, wood table, carpet, etc..
      Edit: stay away from the Chinese no name clones unless you are using one with a higher sensor to make a franken mouse like I did as the build quality on them are utter crap.

    I've given the MX vertical mouse test runs for over a year at computer supply stores just to see how it feels. Of course, they were all immobile so I could not properly get a good 'feel' for it. I decided to get one two days ago and find that I actually love it! I've been doing graphic layout for a trade show company for almost 18 years. Working with standard 'palm down' mice (most recently a Logitech M720 mouse} has given me frozen shoulder (both sides, very painful) for over 2 years. This mouse feels so natural. @milk0r87 4 года назад +1

      @@martoantoniuk I game on it because its either that or a controller now, I get massive pain in my hands after a few minutes with a normal mouse.
      The work provided Penguin Mouse (I think the name is something similar to that) I get less fatigue with that, but I hate looking at it. You’ll see why if you ever googled it.
      I was also given one of those Logitech mice that has a ball on the thumb to move. It doesn’t work because for me it is the clicking that hurts, not the movement across a mousepad.
      After a long enough time (maybe a month) with it I started to adjust to it, so I think I am basically as competitive as I used to be.
      The mouse doesn’t get warm because I am always taking my hand off to either type, or just loosely holding it in-between mouse movements. This mouse is one where you don’t glue your hand to it for the hours of computer time.
      If you get strain in your hand and especially from clicking, then I would highly recommend looking more into this.

    I use a ergonomic mouse like this one for years now. With practice, it's easy to use. This specific mouse have a high price in comparison to what you can find on Amazon.
    I use the sharkk basic, it cost less but do the job for the price. I personally don't use i for gaming as everything is a little bit slower with it.
    A interesting series of videos would be to create the best ergonomic work place. With each videos comparing different kind of stuff (mouse, keyboard, desk, ect).
    I don't feel like this video show all the benefits of using this kind of mouse. I would be interested to see more. Work safety is not something people think about when they work at a desk. But it is as important as anything else.

      Anker also makes the exact same mouse, and they are fine for normal gaming,(I would not use one for competitive play) plus they come in both wired, and wireless(just don't plug the dongle into the back of your case). there is also a no name Chinese clone floating around on eBay for even cheap that has a much better senor, so I picked one up, and ended up taking the top case off because it felt like total garbage, and put an aker top case on it, and boom better sensor, but my back/forward buttons are swapped, so I'm gonna have to take it apart, and check the wiring at some point, and it makes gaming even better with 4000 DPI which I use on dual monitors, and thinking of doing the same mod for my Sharkk wired vertical mouse I have on my work computer that has dual monitors as well.

    I just wanted to revisit this video and say that I bought the MX vertical mouse and am IN LOVE with it. It has significantly improved my comfort levels at the desk while through the day. The ghost clicks I found went away once I adopted to the mouse. I found that I was trying to hold the mouse too tightly. Over time, my grip relaxed and my accuracy has improved. I only wish there were more programmable keys and that the track wheel was 4D. And ofcourse... RGB would have been nice :-P I haven't tried using the mouse for FPS games... but I think it will be fun to try.
    Edit: An aside - I had to switch to a 65% keyboard/mini keyboard to accommodate the sweeps that this mouse forces you to make. Probably just a me thing. I purchased a dedicated number pad for data entry tasks. All in all, I'm very happy with my new set-up.

I also use a wavy keyboard, so nobody else can easily use my computer.

    I had severe arm pain a while back, for almost a month and put it down to the fact I'm a programmer and game all night. I looked around and there wasn't a huge selection, especially since I've always used a mouse left-handed. With a normal mouse it's just as easy for me to use (most allow for the left and right click to be reversed if you prefer), but for a vertical mouse you have to have a different mouse for left and right handed use.
    I got an Evoluent left-handed mouse (Logitech didn't have one) and my pain was gone within a week and half. I've had it about 18 months now and highly recommend that mouse and a vertical mouse in general.
    They DO take a bit of getting used to (especially if you've been a heavy user for 20+ years like me) but now I'm as accurate and speedy with it as I am a normal mouse.
