    Grew up by Paddington main line; forgotten how deeply the sound of those Maybachs were imprinted on my subconscious. Took me back many decades....!

      The climb out of Truro each way is something like 1in80, and the notch 7 startaway sound in particular will always stay with me.😃

    Lovely footage John!
    Good to see the wizzo on a loaded run, I’d assume the 57 was there ‘incase’ - lickey was abit full this morning

      Liam, Yes a backup played a part but it also had to haul the stock from Bescot to New Street. I anticipated a full house at the Lickey so opted for the more tranquil location in the Bromsgrove suburbs. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Regards, John

    Surprisingly unsmoky - very impressive. But it can't have been much of a 'test run' for the Wizzo with a Duff shoving the train from the rear!?

    • @MisterHampshire
      @MisterHampshire 9 месяцев назад

      Was it pushing though? I thought it would have been hauled. 13 carriages plus the 47 - and the Western didn't sound particularly laboured.

      @@MisterHampshire
      Fair point; the 47 appears to have its engine running although might not have been powering. If not, hauling a 117t dead diesel on the rear is equivalent to three extra coaches - great test!

      @GreatBritishRailways1  9 месяцев назад +1

      I think the owners learned a lesson from a previous test run when they used the Western to haul a heavy freight train causing an engine failure. The primary purpose of the 57 was to haul the trainload of passengers from Bescot, where the Western was detached, to Birmingham New Street. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Regards, John

      As far as I can surmise, and from what I have read, 57 303 was there as a 'dead load' that would indeed take over at Bescot, and in the meantime was providing electric train heating (ETH) which is why it was powered up throughout.
