Is it me or does Mewtwo have a LOT in common with Shadow the Hedgehog? Powerful lab experiment with tragic backstory (involving a nice young girl) who wanted to destroy humanity but eventually became sort of a hero with a very reserved and existencial personality...checks out.
I think what is awesome about mewtwo is that he is a sort of phantom of the opera or edward cullen kind of character ya know all brooding and stuff but without some silly romance plot attached to him.

He was voiced by a woman in the Genesect movie because of problems with copyright (of the first movie), but in the anime he is presented as a masculine figure. Man the nuance of tears has me in tears. It makes Satoshi’s sacrifice even more meaningful because Satoshi sees Pokémon and humans as equal which is inferred by Ai when she said that humans are the only ones to cry when sad
I used to think it was odd how the humans were so horrified to see their Pokémon fighting the clones, in a world where battles are commonplace and never cause serious harm to the Pokémon. But a line of dialogue in the CGI remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, makes things a lot clearer. Before the fight begins, Mewtwo says, "We don't need to use our moves" (or anything like that, I can't remember the exact quote), making it clear that this is not a Pokémon battle (a friendly competition akin to wrestling), but rather, a real fight to the death. This explains why the Pokémon are punching and biting each other instead of using Flamethrower, Hydro Pump etc.
Wow I didn't even know that prologue existed! I still got the tragic character vibe from watching it the first time but the prologue would've been a welcomed addition.
Next episode, explaining why ash somehow loses all memory of his past experiences each time he visits a new region and how Pikachu reverts to his weakest point and loses to the first pokemon he sees

Thats y this is definitely one of greatest pokemon movies but when we watched this movie we were kids and things we found cool / scary is the only memory any kid will have of mewtwo strikes back cuz we were kids noone remembers the story of how good it is it had a plot
Excellent presentation of Mewtwo. I love Mewtwo character and it origin. I wish Pokemon can revisit Mewtwo to establish continuity. Pokemon Journeys failed on Mewtwo in an episode that Mewtwo does not recognize Ash. The same for the Genesect movie, but it's a female Mewtwo from the Unova region which interestingly was created from a lab in Unova. I came up with a scene that can tie both Mewtwo stories together and fix a plot hole in the episode of Pokemon "The Battle of the Badge". Supposedly, around the time when Mewtwo was created in the Kanto region. Scientists from Unova able to obtain the formula from the scientists back in Kanto thanks to Team plasma for their hacking operation as they take an interest in Pokémon cloning. So,the scientist in Unova hired by Team Plasma to experiment Pokemon cloning which result in creating Mewtwo (female) and Genesect. In the end, both labs result the same fate where it being destroyed by their Mewtwo. Mewtwo in Kanto met by Giovanni which became Giovanni "partner" while the Mewtwo in Unova destroyed the lab and escaped on her own. The only way to make a connection of these Mewtwos is from an episode of Pokemon "The Battle of the Badge" where Giovanni received a phone call informing him that there is an accident. So he left Jessie and James to take care of the gym while he goes to Mewtwo and tells it that he has an "emergency assignment" that it needs to complete. About the phone call, this accident means that Team Rocket was monitoring the situation closely in Unova after they discovered their information been hacked by Team Plasma. The the destruction of the Unova lab occurred separately a few months after the accident in the Kanto lab. Which mean when it happen, Team Rocket gets involve immediately. To avoid a war against Team Plasma as they are searching for their Mewtwo, Team Rockets secretly goes after their Mewtwo in Unova. Therefore, Giovanni tells Mewtwo that this assignment must be complete. Mewtwo is puzzle wondering why, but Giovanni tells Mewtwo that in order to rule the world as the only powerful Pokemon, you must take out the other competition. Mewtwo still looks confused, but at the same time he was distracted by the sight of the Unova region and seeing it region Pokémon. Giovanni then pressure Mewtwo giving a scenario of what would happen if the world learn about the other existence of a powerful and not Mewtwo? How would it feel to be disrespected and ignore? That would make Mewtwo useless. This surely fired up Mewtwo as he vow to complete the mission. So Mewtwo and Giovanni are on this island somewhere in Unova which they track the location of a mysterious Pokémon . Mewtwo use it psychic power causing a tsunami to wipe out any pokemon on the island. Then a burst of light flashed apporaching from afar to stop the tsunami. After the tsunami was clear, it is reveal that this mysterious Pokémon is none other Mewtwo. This shocks Mewtwo (Kanto). He looks froze trying to process what just happen. He is shock seeing another kind of his. Mewtwo (Kanto) notice this is a chance for him to know more about this other Mewtwo and about it origin, but Giovanni kept pressuring Mewtwo telling lies that it is a clone and must be killed immediately. The Mewtwo in Unova can see through the armor of Mewtwo (Kanto) identify him to be the same as her. Mewtwo (unova) wonder why it siding with the human.So the two battles, Mewtwo (Kanto) seems to have the upper hand as it suit gave more power, however it began to have some sympathy on this other Mewtwo. So Mewtwo (Kanto) not holding back giving it all. Mewtwo (Kanto) is surprise to see another kind of his is strong just as him, the same goes for the other Mewtwo. Mewtwo (Kanto) starting to regret on this assignment as it want to be with this Mewtwo so they both can learn about themselves. The two clashes for a while as Mewtwo (Unova) is starting to feel fatigue. Giovanni pressure Mewtwo that he don't have much time left and need to end it quick. So Giovanni sends out some drones to finish the job, but Mewtwo (Kanto) destroy them all saying that it is almost over. The other Mewtwo question Mewtwo (Kanto) is that it only purpose to live? This stuns Mewtwo (Kanto), but Giovanni words got the best of it as the two sides are conflicting Mewtwo (Kanto). Mewtwo (Kanto) respond that it purpose is to be the only powerful in the world. Mewtwo (Kanto) use the rocks to pin Mewtwo (Unova) on the ground. The other Mewtwo is struggle to escape as a powerful attack of Mewtwo (Kanto) from the sky coming down quick. With just seconds the entire island blows up. During the explosion, tears can be seen coming out from Mewtwo eyes that it regret for killing someone who he can talk to understand more about his purpose in life. Seeing none of the remains, Giovanni conclude the assignment is a success. Now that they can truly rule the world together. However, Mewtwo is haunted by the words from the other Mewtwo.The scene end with Mew passing by when the Team Rocket helicopter left. To Be continued....
Fun fact the 1st movie wouldn’t be as dark as it is now without the porygon episode. Since the porygon episode gave people seizures the Pokémon company was trying to fix everything with the porygon episode so they can continue the anime. While this process was going on the original writer of the pokemon anime and the 1st 3 movies. The writer used this time to make the 1st movie darker than it was going to be. When the 1st movie became a massive success he was given an opportunity to make his own pokemon for the 2nd movie that being Lugia and the 2nd movie was planned completely differently with a completely different story that didn’t have characters we know like ash Ketchum since the original writer for the anime didn’t like ash. He tried to get rid of ash through a scrapped episode where he is much older. I forgot the writers name.
The anime writer and main scriptwriter for the first three films was Takeshi Shudo. He had in mind that Pokémon would acquire more maturity and realism, but they did not let him since it was for children. I maintain that Pokémon would have been a cult series worth remembering in this century if it had known how to exploit its full potential with as many themes as it had available, but it was reduced to a perpetual children's series.
Mewtwo wasn't really a bad guy. He was just against itself and other pokemon listening and obeying humans like they belong to them. He didn't know it's purpose, and hated it's creators and Giovanni because he believed Mewtwo was created to serve humans, specifically him.
I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the Japanese version for the first time recently. So much important context was lost in the dumbed-down US version, and it's those kind of complicated questions and scenarios that led me deeper into anime in the first place. I do wish Pokemon would have at least opted for a slightly less comical approach, because Origins proved it could work. Overall though, the first movie is still amazing and Mewtwo will always be one of my favorite Pokemon.
Pokémon The First Movie is nothing short of genius, and that’s not an over exaggeration. In a format suitable for children, it raises ideas about creationism, existence, meaning and purpose. Many of these ideas lie within canonical literature such as Frankenstein. Wonderful film.
This was a great video. And as much as I love subtlety and nuance, as someone who grew up with a lot of abuse and trauma, "I see now that the circumstance's of one's birth is irrelevant, it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are." absolutely made me bawl. That is the one line I don't think I could do without, even though I agreed with your analysis for the rest of the dub. Sometimes spelling stuff out is better, subjectively, but it is a fine line to walk, and overdoing it can just become annoying. I grew up without watching Pokemon because of my abusive mother calling it 'witchcraft' and so here I am, 23 years later finally watching the series and movies. I felt sad near the start of my watch, as if I didn't deserve to watch the series because I had missed out on it, and that maybe it'd make me a 'fake' fan or something. But, I guess, it's never too late to live your best childhood, because Pokemon can teach valuable lessons to even adults. I'm so happy I'm finally watching the series, it's so beautiful.
You should add the character evolution with the second movie, Mewtwo's Return, we see even more in this movie how the lesson of the first movie changed him.
I already know my strategy if I had to battle Mewtwo. Since they’re a Psychic-Type, I’d simply fight without thinking so they can’t read my thought or predict my moves.
This is why out of all the Pokémon movies, especially the first 3, this one takes it home. For the simple fact that it was a Pokémon movie but yet with a violent intro to the movie. Something that the cartoon didn't show and obviously the part with the little girl at the beginning when she starts to fade away and all that's left is mewtwo... that shit in least to me gets me everytime when i watch it.
The original Mewtwo is my favorite Pokemon character. And his theme in the original? A horror inspired piece made with organ notes. It still gives me chills.
I like the Layla quote from Guardians of the galaxy vol 3 "there are hands, and there are hands that guide those hands". mewtwo may have not been born naturually but his existence has purpose
I find it funny how people keep saying that original Japanese version is better and yet they keep quoting Mewtwo's "I see now that the circumstance's of one's birth is irrelevant, it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are" line which is completely absent from the original Japanese version and was only added in the 4kids dub.
Overall, the original is more subtle. The good quotes from the Dub are due to a lack of subtlety. The specific quote you’re referencing is a clear example of this - rather than letting the viewer infer the themes of the story for themself, Mewtwo has to expressly spell them out.
Well said old chum. Truly, the only thing that went wrong was that Mewtwo was in the line of fire. With both humanity and life punching him throughout the entire movie. It wasn't Mewtwo's fault that he wanted to shape the world into the palm of his hand with power. Almost like the king that the 13 colonies disliked. It's sad how none of the people besides Ash wanted to actually understand and connect to Mewtwo's wrath. By dying from the fatal blow that made Pikachu cry...
There are plenty of ways to relate mewtwo (as an individual) and mewtwo's unperishable powers to humanity itself. Mark my words, this is a legendary movie. A million times more legendary than all the other pokemon movies. We should thank mewtwo for litting up a side of humanity that it wish they could use against life. But, now that you think about it, why is humanity's wish to become stronger than life inaccurate, or to become unbalanced. After mewtwo causing the amount of damage he caused, he thought he was helping humanity become more understanding towards him. But he did'nt seem to connect to the other side. That his power was without mercy pulling all the pokemon and the people into his own hands. The situation mewtwo put himself in should be thought of like this: (A weaponless individual vs a large shopping mall crowd). True for life, this is how confusing the ongoing relationship between life and humanity can get 🥱 Good grief.
Firstly, I love this RUclips video! Well done! Secondly... Can we please put a death to the "Killing and Mature Themes??? :O Is this really a kids movie????" Like please... those things have been common in kids entertainment forever, and for good reason. It is not like kids are supposed to only watch meaningless, spiritually deprived, nonsensical and mundane stories about nothing. There is so many kids movies and kids series that are great and have deep stories, and yes, when REQUIRED by the story, there will be killing and mature themes elegantly woven into the story and presented in a way that is appropriate for a young audience. Can we just accept this ad normal and not pretend our jaws drop to the floor everytime we see it?

Pokémon The First Movie is nothing short of genius, and that’s not an over exaggeration. In a format suitable for children, it raises ideas about creationism, existence, meaning and purpose. Many of these ideas lie within canonical literature such as Frankenstein. Wonderful film.

This was a great video. And as much as I love subtlety and nuance, as someone who grew up with a lot of abuse and trauma, "I see now that the circumstance's of one's birth is irrelevant, it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are." absolutely made me bawl. That is the one line I don't think I could do without, even though I agreed with your analysis for the rest of the dub. Sometimes spelling stuff out is better, subjectively, but it is a fine line to walk, and overdoing it can just become annoying. I grew up without watching Pokemon because of my abusive mother calling it 'witchcraft' and so here I am, 23 years later finally watching the series and movies. I felt sad near the start of my watch, as if I didn't deserve to watch the series because I had missed out on it, and that maybe it'd make me a 'fake' fan or something. But, I guess, it's never too late to live your best childhood, because Pokemon can teach valuable lessons to even adults. I'm so happy I'm finally watching the series, it's so beautiful.

This is why out of all the Pokémon movies, especially the first 3, this one takes it home. For the simple fact that it was a Pokémon movie but yet with a violent intro to the movie. Something that the cartoon didn't show and obviously the part with the little girl at the beginning when she starts to fade away and all that's left is mewtwo... that shit in least to me gets me everytime when i watch it.

I find it funny how people keep saying that original Japanese version is better and yet they keep quoting Mewtwo's "I see now that the circumstance's of one's birth is irrelevant, it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are" line which is completely absent from the original Japanese version and was only added in the 4kids dub.
Overall, the original is more subtle. The good quotes from the Dub are due to a lack of subtlety. The specific quote you’re referencing is a clear example of this - rather than letting the viewer infer the themes of the story for themself, Mewtwo has to expressly spell them out.

Well said old chum. Truly, the only thing that went wrong was that Mewtwo was in the line of fire. With both humanity and life punching him throughout the entire movie. It wasn't Mewtwo's fault that he wanted to shape the world into the palm of his hand with power. Almost like the king that the 13 colonies disliked. It's sad how none of the people besides Ash wanted to actually understand and connect to Mewtwo's wrath. By dying from the fatal blow that made Pikachu cry...

There are plenty of ways to relate mewtwo (as an individual) and mewtwo's unperishable powers to humanity itself. Mark my words, this is a legendary movie. A million times more legendary than all the other pokemon movies. We should thank mewtwo for litting up a side of humanity that it wish they could use against life. But, now that you think about it, why is humanity's wish to become stronger than life inaccurate, or to become unbalanced. After mewtwo causing the amount of damage he caused, he thought he was helping humanity become more understanding towards him. But he did'nt seem to connect to the other side. That his power was without mercy pulling all the pokemon and the people into his own hands. The situation mewtwo put himself in should be thought of like this: (A weaponless individual vs a large shopping mall crowd). True for life, this is how confusing the ongoing relationship between life and humanity can get 🥱 Good grief.

Like please... those things have been common in kids entertainment forever, and for good reason. It is not like kids are supposed to only watch meaningless, spiritually deprived, nonsensical and mundane stories about nothing. There is so many kids movies and kids series that are great and have deep stories, and yes, when REQUIRED by the story, there will be killing and mature themes elegantly woven into the story and presented in a way that is appropriate for a young audience. Can we just accept this ad normal and not pretend our jaws drop to the floor everytime we see it?
