Milak was ready to break his own world record in the 200 fly, but got very distracted in the last call room when his racing suit broke and had to put on another pair. He still swam an OR.
I just simply don't think people realize how special this event was. These are the two fastest people on the 100 meter butterfly in HISTORY, racing in an Olympic final, both swimming personal best, on lanes 4,5, pushing each other to new WR! Milak would have won any Olympics with his time since his time is also within the prior Olympic record! He would have taken the gold from Phelps too, he was just faster than Phelps's personal best!! Yet Dressel still got it done and took gold! 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯
This is so well said. Based off the latest news I read in Hungarian, they said Milak is now brainstorming the strategy to take off Dressel but first of all he's resorting to his physiotherapist to increase his muscle mass. Let's see the outcome.
Honestly since Milak is so far ahead in the 200 fly he could bulk up and try to go out fast enough to win the 100. In 3 years he’ll be just 24 and Dressel will be exiting his prime. However if Dressel can actually hit his turn and finish he’s going 49.0
Absolutely! Everyone of those names is impressive in his own way but I'm looking to see Milak or Dressel at the age of Phelps in his last races in 100 and 200m fly, regarding that Phelps used to race a variety of strokes and until now they are all nowhere near his 400m IM WR.
There is a considerable difference in their starts off the blocks. No one gets more air or distance off the blocks than Dressel. Typical is 1/2 a body length. Not sure that Caleb's dolphin kicks are more powerful than others, and he doesn't really have a high amplitude for his underwater dolphin kicks, but others still don't seem to be able to catch him.
so true, I watched him in Olympic 2016 and I felt super suprise that even at the age of 20 he was also the best start in the race. His jump like a Lion catching its preys
Are you kidding me? His amplitude is better than anyone else in the world, his flexibility throughout his whole body is amazing, more like a dolphin than any other swimmer.
Kristof will break the 100m butterfly record in the near future, looking at his performance here. Dressel needs to up his game and do something like 49.20s or lower. It looks like the elusive 49.0s mark will be breached soon, either by Caeleb or Kristof
Let's take a moment to appreciate the final event in Tokyo, too, the men's 4x100m medley during which Dressel swam the butterfly leg in 49.03, the fastest butterfly leg ever in any relay.
Dressel still has room to improve, with good walls that would have been a 49.3 or .2... I dont think Milak will catch him in the near future, but we will see what happens!!
@@RigoOXx It makes me think of 2017 World Champ where Milak at 17, swam his best and broke the WJ record in 100 fly with 50.6, which was also an output of racing with the strongest, Dressel. After that, he didn't come closer for years until 2021 where he made 50 s again. So it is possible Milak will not catch Dressel in the near future, especially if he's not racing with him head to head. We all know how Milak needs a pacemaker and someone who strongly motivates him to reach his peaks.
It wasn't a risk, he has a breathing pattern similar to Phelps, but his is: for the first lap, breath in 2, for the second, breath hold once after underwater, then the rest is breath in 1. Michael Phelp's was: breath in 1 all the time, but only do a non breathing stroke in the start and turns. Distant swimmers have breathing patterns you know, not just random breath holding
@@whyamimakingthis2202 ya distance swimmers do but the elite freestylers don’t breath flags-wall on the mile and ur supposed to not breathe at least the last stoke on a 2 fly
That’s a big IF. If Dressel had a better turn, he would have broken the world record by even more. No way Milak will ever beat Dressel in the first 50m. Dressel’s start is the best ever.
1:38 From that angle, I feel like, what Milak did with his arm pull and arm recovery at that moment, look like mine. But I do it when I still have energy and only in 25m with very low stroke rate. 😀
@@engswimwell8963 Milak is more of 200m swimmers where endurance is one of his strengths that enables him to do powerful strokes in the last 25m, like Michael Phelps did to Milorad Cavic. Whereas Dressel is a sprinter who lacks powerful stroke in the last 10m at times from what I have observed, not only in butterfly but also in freestyle.
Milak can dethrone Dressel next Olympics. At that time, Milak would be 24 while Dressel would be almost 28. But I'm still not sure because many swimmers such as Ryan Lochte, Inge De Bruijn, Katinka Hosszu reach their peak at the age of 27.

From what have occured in butterfly races so far, I think it's difficult to control or adjust stroke perfectly in butterfly approaching the wall. There are some swimmers who experienced that undesired thing : 1. Matt Biondi at Seoul 1988 in 100m final that caused him lost to Anthony Nesty of Suriname by 0.01 sec. 2. Milorad Cavic at Beijing 2008 in 100m final where Michael Phelps managed to take advantage. 3. Michael Phelps at London 2012 in 200m final that caused him lost to Chad LeClos. Ironically, that looks similar to the manner Cavic lost to him 4 years before.
Dressel’s tempo is a bit weaker than milak. Thats why butterfly is so interesting because it involves a lot of techniques and calculations. Milak here came up with a better stroke calculation, and dressel missed the point. He spoke about this in the latest video of swimswam, that he made a wrong decision of touching wall.
@@Yu-oi2jm It is not easy to do that calculation. Even the great Matt Biondi and Michael Phelps sometimes miscalculated in crucial moment like I said before.
