  • Caeleb Dressel captured the men’s 100m butterfly from lane one, earning his second win of the day. His 51.61 gives him five-consecutive 100m butterfly wins in TYR Pro Swim Series competitions! Luis Martinez and Andrew Seliskar finished second and third respectively.
“I'm coming home well and am holding everything together, but I should have been a little faster,” Dressel said. “Either way, it was a fast field and I'm happy to get my hand on the wall first."

I appreciate that the best swimmers in the world, after winning, can say “- ok turn, terrible long finish, I looked like an age grouper in my morning finish”.... 😜🤣

The same reason most swimmers swim events: for fun. I guess you could also argue that it's good to "cross train", but 100% he does this for fun. A lot of people in his backstroke group are IMers and I think he also trains some IM. So swimming 100 butterfly is probably a relaxing way to compare himself to his training buddies in events that he's not supposed to dominate them. Also I hear he weight-training buddies with Tom Shields, so I guess it's also nice to race him for once.
He also did the 100 butterfly at FINA world cup in 2019 after worlds and I think he also went 52.2 there, so yeah, he's legit. Might be mistaken there tho.
