- Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of RUSH gives inspiring speeches in inducting Yes into the 2017 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017. Rush bassist and guitarist then welcomes inductees Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman, Alan White and Chris Squire's wife onto the Barclays Center stages to accept their award. Jon Anderson, Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman gave acceptance speeches on behalf of the rest of the band. Chris Squire and Tony Kaye are inducted postmortem. HBO broadcast the Rock Hall induction ceremony on April 29, 2017.
Rollingstone.com review: Rush's Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee have been lifelong fans of Yes, and at Yes' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, the pair not only got to pay tribute to the band that inspired them to pursue music but also got to share the stage with them for the first time.
"As I said during my speech, I was turned on to them through their second album Time and a Word," Lee tells Rolling Stone after exiting the stage. "I've been a huge fan ever since, just an over-the-top fan of them for years."
As a bassist, Lee was thrilled to be able to perform "Roundabout," a song he considers to be "one of the great bass songs ever written, in the history of recorded music." After already agreeing to induct Yes, Lee had been asked to join them for a performance by the late and influential bass player Chris Squire's widow and the remaining members of the band. "Seeing as I was going to be here anyway, why not?"
As Lee said during his induction speech: "It's not overstating things to say it changed the way I played and listened to music forever. So here we are, decades later, and the music of Yes is still echoing down through the years, showing me that music truly is a continuum."
Lifeson shared the profound influence of the band on his life during the induction speech as well. "Yes were my gateway band in so many ways," the guitarist says. "There's nothing so fleeting yet enduring about the way music feels when you're 17 years old."
The Rock Hall audience got another treat in the form of keyboardist Rick Wakeman's uproarious acceptance speech. Though Lifeson couldn't hear much of it over the laughs, he appreciated the snippets he caught. "He's a very, very funny guy," he says. "He's got a great style and sense of humor."

"Okay, I'm Steve Howe," is the greatest thing anyone has ever said at one of these ceremonies. My God, he is awesome.
If there was anyone more overdue than Rush, was Yes.
Except maybe The Moody Blues.
LOL! Prostate exam anecdote during hall of fame acceptance speech? No one EVER in the world but Rick Wakeman... priceless.
Nathan C Freaking statement too, as a way of saying "These m*f*krs made us wait this long, and I'm telling it, with some humor, but in your face!"
LOL
fonsecorona So true!
He was always the one with the jokes!!
It's like that man's a stand-up comic
we're British,we dont give a fuck.
thats why our comedy is harsh....but funny.
Yes should have been one of the first to be inducted, who makes these decisions anyway?
My father was the biggest YES fan out there and he recently passed away in March of 2017. He would've loved to see this. I miss you, dad...
Did you ever find him in a dirty sleazy strip club? ;)
@@MichaelBradley1967 fuck you
@get along you obviously didn't get the joke... go watch the video again dumbass
My condolences for your loss, but hopefully you can relive moments with your dad through Yes's music
Really sorry to hear, I hope that Yes's music let you remember the fond memories with your dad and I'm sure we could've liked to see Yes get in the Hall of Fame
You can see Geddy and Alex are literally seething during their speech. 'Yes' are the most diversely talented band of all time and they get in the R&R Hall of fame 48 years after their debut album?
As Geddy Lee said, _"It's time to make right a great wrong."_
As always, Wakeman steals the show. Classic.
Good material. That and the accent and he could kill doing standup in the US.
Wakeman .... C L A S S all the way.
@@slide4180 He really could. "I saw my dad." Hilarious.
Rick is a legendary storyteller. I heard this one some 20 odd years ago when he was being interviewed on UK tv. I apologise if the details aren't all correct, but it goes something like this: He had gone out for a meal and was driving home. Suddenly out of nowhere, he was caught short as something he had eaten disagreed with him and he was in a bit of a tight spot. He was in the middle of nowhere and frantically drove around searching for signs of civilisation. Eventually, he came upon a house and knocked on the door. A man answered and Rick explained his predicament. The man kindly let him in and allowed him to use the facilities. The facilities however didn't have a lock on the door, but since he was in such a dilemna, he relieved himself just in time. As he was sitting there slowly composing himself, trousers still around his ankles, the door slowly moved ajar and two hands appeared, one holding a Yes album and the other holding a pen.
Rick Wakeman's strip club joke might be the funniest joke ever at the R&R HOF.
i think the doctor getting a hard on while sticking his finger up Rick's ass was way more funny !
No, he stuck his hard on up Rick's ass while his fingers were tapping on the desk.
Alex Lifeson"s Blah Blah Blah speech was great! Absolutely funny!
Reminds me of Benny Hill humor.
This is how he is - he's a great raconteur and has a very outspoken and funny sense of humour. If you haven't seen him solo, he's about 60% playing and 40% stand up and both are equally entertaining as both his playing and humour are absolutely on point. I saw him in Solihull last year and he was great...
One extraordinary band inducting another extraordinary band into the HOF. Priceless.
Only Rick Wakeman would talk about his prostate exam on stage in front of millions of people. No context, no allegory, no meaning, he just straight up talked about a prostate exam...
I love this Band, and all of a sudden, a stronger respect for Rush (I haven't been a big fan, but I just listen occasionally as I do respect what they have done.)
Listening to Rick Wakeman talk about his prostate exam had me ROFL. He's frickin hilarious!!! :-)
I'd recognize John Andersons voice ANYWHERE. I'm not gay or overly sentimental, but his voice is like an angel, agreed?
agreed
Most definitely!
How would that be gay moron
a) stating his voice is like an angel's doesn't lead people to believe you're gay or overly sentimental.
b) being gay and/or overly sentimental is okay, man. it's part of who we are.
c) I agree, he sounds like an angel.
I remember seeing them "in the round" at the Arena in St Louis tripping my brains out and when he stood at the center top of the stage looking up singing into the mike that had dropped down from the heavens, I KNEW he was heaven sent. YES!
Rush and Yes were in my Hall of Fame years ago. But it was nice to see them get "inducted" in the other one.
Mouse Killaz ....Amen to both....God's among mere mortals!
The RRHOF has always been a farce but it's been the total dedication of fans of groups like Rush and Yes that cracked the whip and finally got them in this thing, giving it some sort of credibility at last. All of the worthless and no talent "bands" they put in before will be utterly and rightfully forgotten, and many of them have been already.
Mouse Killaz I love both bands!
At 8:11 Good gosh! I never knew that Rick was a polished stand-up. He so whimsical and funny.
Seriously! I would go see Rick just tell jokes and stories for an hour, no (wonderful) playing required! He's hilarious...always has been!
eddyvideostar he's interviewe with Jon Lord is fn awesome, too monsters of the keyboard
Great musicians with an incredible sense of humor… This world needs more Rick Wakemans and Alex Lifesons!
Rick Wackeman and his awesome English humor, gotta love it.
chais jo its spelled "humour" you colonist half wit.
What a shame mister CHRIS SQUIRE wasn't there, thank you very much hall of fame for waiting that long...
Oh he was there. Maybe not in the physical sense but, he was there.
Much like Ray Thomas was gone before The Moody Blues got inducted.
Hooray for YES!!! And up yours Jann Wenner for making them wait so long.
Jann Weiner is a putz.
Omg, Rick Wakeman's speech had me laughing so hard!
Jennifer Felan the doctor was hard but he wasn't laughing
Laughing with tears in my eyes. Rick summed it all up. Saw Yes in '75 at Cap Center in MD. Best show of my life. And I saw ELP too!
Thank you Rick Wakeman for that enormous kek!
I noticed Alex was on his best behavior. I hope Geddy didn't have to threaten to kill him.
Discrimination is not a right. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah? Blah blah blah blah blah!
Discrimination is not a right. Ha! Geddy probably had a long talking too with Alex, and I'll bet Alex said he was gonna do something dumb and that's why Neil didn't show up. Then Alex felt bad that he made Neil not want to come and so he behaved himself.
rostifardian blah blah blah
@@rostifardian interesting point of view....
@@rostifardian then what happened?
Yes and Rush together. My idols together. I love those guys music since I was a little child. Thank you for such a wonderful music.
Rick Wakeman's speech is right up there(pun intended) with Alex Lifeson's "blah blah blah" acceptance speech.
What’s so wonderful is that Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters was on stage to welcome Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now Geddy and Alex welcomes ‘YES’ into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
That’s professionalism! Recognizing talents of others.
It was 3rd grade. My teacher Ms. Bird brought an album to school, it was Yes Fragile. i never heard of them before. She had the lyrics of Roundabout up on the chalkboard for our poetry lesson. i can still she her in my mind with the yardstick pointing to the lyrics as it was blasting on a school record player. It ruined my life! Thank you YES & Ms. Bird!!
Lifeson really classy here. Brilliant speech.
And that's how it's done, kids.
Alex is in better shape than I've seen him in years. I hope they all live to be a hundred.
This!
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if they will persuade Neil to tour again..
It's not just Neil that doesn't want to tour. Alex might look great but his hands have just about had it. There's a reason why they slowed down YYZ...can't play it that fast anymore.
I read some time ago that Wakeman really likes to hang with his mates at the pub, throwing darts, drinking beer and telling jokes, and that he's a genuinely funny guy. Amazing keyboardist, for sure.
If only these bastards could get along for more than 6 months at a time.
Which bastards?
What are you smoking
Touching words from Alex and Geddy, followed by biting humour from Rick Wakeman. Who could ask for more, other than that absolutely awesome rendition of Roundabout - now that is a moment to never forget...
Blah, Blah, Blah,
Priceless inside joke by Geddy.
ahahaha lovely...
Before Alex handed the mic back to Geddy he looked at him and said “blah?” but you can’t see it in this video
Yeah, to Alex (refering to Alex speech at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame)!...
I still remember watching Alex's speech and promptly laughing so hard my left lung popped out of my mouth
This is obviously an exaggeration
Best moment
For all those who ask "Why does Wakeman wear a Cape"....after his speech ALL is Explained! Cheers Everyone
Rick Wakeman's speech has to be one of the funniest things ever!
You should read his books.

Rick and Alex. They should take both their comedy acts on tour together.
Aylbdr Ma
A lot of musical talent on that stage holy cow. Rick Wakeman is hilarious.
You could see it Yes's smiles and nods, that they're seeing up and close two musicians who were, and I don't think anyone who knows anything about Rush thinks I'm exaggerating, were profoundly influenced by this band's music. Yes stands at the very pinnacle of progressive rock right alongside giants like King Crimson and ELP, and they made a series of albums that stand out as being some of the greatest records ever produced.
These guys are hysterical. I wanted to see Geddys and Alex's reaction after Rick was finished.
The two best bands on the planet, ever.
SIMPLY THE BIGGEST PROG BAND OF ALL TIME.. THANKS, YES!!!
How nice of Yes to visit our little planet, in our little galaxy, and grace us with their message of peace, love, and transcendence...Godspeed on your journey home.
Wakeman is hilarious, he's funnier than some stand up comedians iv'e heard.
It is mind boggling that it took them until 2017 to induct bands like Yes and ELO in the Hall of Fame.
I'm pretty sure they did it because they had to not because they wanted to!
@@Nickpaintbrush Sadly that is probably true.
Yes is the Word. And the Word is Yes.
I seen Steve Howe with Carl Palmer and their band "Asia" in 1983 at Canada's Wonderland amusement park. Steve Howe did an amazing classical guitar solo. It is nice to see "Yes" finally get recognized for their great music.
Pretty sure I was at that same show!
two amazing artists indruducing amazing artists
Hahaha I love you Rick Wakeman!
mootbooxle It's funny how often we bump into each other in the RUclips comments section, eh?
mootbooxle I
So many years since I first heard the first album. Great to be reminded from time to time how amazing their music was/is. Ridiculous that RRHOF took so long to recognize Yes, and it's a shame Chris Squire wasn't able to be part of it, but their performance was outstanding. Howe is incredible still. Will be watching this many times.
Somebody who has a higher voice than Geddy? Yes (no pun), it's Jon!
Yea, Jon naturally has a high voice
Going for the one is incredible high to sing!
Just watched it again and blubbed my heart out! How great to hear Rush pay such a heart felt tribute to YES
As a LONG time Rush fan, its amazing to me to see and say: Look, everybody loves Rush!!
rush did many things for music- they may have been or not the first but they were one of the originals: 1) use of the pentagram and marketed it well( the man in the star symbol).
2) using pedals and other equipment they used before or some used before.
3) they made a company called anthem records- it was their company and they marketed it towards big record companies but they controlled the music and what they did- not the big record companies that liked to control the artists and the product they put out.
HAHAHA fuckin Wakeman!!
Monsters of ROCK !! watch Led Zeps induction very emotional
RESPECT Geddy Lee of RUSH thank you for always being with me xxx
SO insanely happy that Ged and Alex got to be the ones to induct Yes, and that Ged was doubly-honored by being chosen to play bass in his hero Chris Squire’s absence on Roundabout! I know he was on CLOUD 9 that night!
Shame on the RRHOF for dragging their feet so long that Chris Squire and Peter Banks couldn't be on that stage where they belonged.
Despite that, it was cool to see Geddy Lee sitting in for Squire...
I've never noticed this until now, but Jon Anderson's speaking voice sounds just like his singing voice.
And justice have been done. This band should have been long before in the hall.........
That Wakeman is a trip..god love him. The world needs more guys like him who can laugh at themselves and not take everything fucking seriously.
I love that Rick Wakeman just goes off on his own little stand up routine.
Well it's about goddamn time.
This was WAAAAAY overdue!!!! Finally got it done!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alex and Rick should be a comedy duet I swear to god 😂😂 I’m dying
Finally - an amazing band Yes is finally inducted! And Rick Wakeman is a total comedian!!
Wakeman has always been a prankster at heart. Great to see these guys inducted.
Really Loved this - 2 awesome Bands
Yes & Rush both so incredibly great!
Major talents like this makes you look at (so called music) & say WTF let's go back in time ---
Was so happy for Bill Bruford who was able to finally put a positive ribbon on his Yes experience.
They deserved that so much! Love to YES and (for sure) to Alex & Geddy!!!
Crazy that my one favorite band introduced my other favorite group.
I'll add two things to Bill's description: loud and soft.
Too many bands don't understand musical contrasts loud, soft, fast and slow. Yes does what the music needs.
wait! a shirt with the rush logo and the yes logo! whoa! 😍
Yes was the first live concert I went to....they were In The Round in a town in Iowa named Cedar Rapids. It was truly the only Band I ever needed to witness to be complete. Their music still fills my speakers in the home and car. Thank you, Yes, for your part in my teen years before going off to The Marine Corps and on into my 60's! Well deserved!!!!
Steve quoting Bill Bruford was pretty damn funny. Wish Bill spoke because he's got a witty sense of humor also.
Alex and Geddy quietly slipping off to the slide of the stage made my day.
YES!!!!!! They definitely belong in the ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME. It's about damn time!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩
Rick Wakeman - too funny!
yes has always been my fav band, thanks yes for the most fantastic music timeless.
WAY TO GO, RICK!!! I just love when inductees follow in the footsteps of others who give this organization the middle finger!!!
Steve does it too 6:37
Understand that the R&RHOF is Jann Wenner's personal record collection. I was there on September 13th, 2001; two days after the towers fell. It was a very emotional time. They were featuring John Lennon Imagine. I was disappointed to find no Rush, Yes and most importantly, the greatest American progressive rock band KANSAS.
Wow. We visited there at the exact same time. Cleveland was a ghost town and we had the Hall practically to ourselves....well, except for you, apparently.
Yes IS the hall of fame!
as a pioneer in bringing the music of YES to North America...i would simply like to thank you for the enlightment your gift of music brought to my life...art that made a difference...cheer's mates !!!
YES and RUSH are two of the most gifted and amazing musical groups ever! They were a massive part of my youth, to have RUSH be there to induct YES into the rock and roll hall of fame is once in a lifetime event! There will never be two groups with the talent of RUSH and YES! and to have them both acknowledge one another here is a once in a lifetime event! Thank you the YES and RUSH!! I really hope you realize the impact you made on peoples life's with your amazing talent!!
Legends inducting Legends.
lmao I'm dying at that last bit by Rick Wakeman
legendary
A phenomenal band being inducted being inducted by two thirds of another phenomenal band. The fact that it took so long for Rush and Yes to be inducted is a crime against music.
Rick might have just re up'd Alex's acceptance speech.
I'm glad they both treated the RRHoF with all due respect and gravitas, which is NONE. They ignored prog all these years because Rolling Stone hated it, and still hates it. Rolling Stone and it's writers/editors can go screw themselves.
amen
Wasn't hard to follow Alex's story he was telling. The he did so was an even larger FU to the chitflucks that have disgraced the once respected HoF.
Bill was funny but Steve's dig was spot on, forcefully delivered as well.
MajorSeventh No fucking excuse for not indicting the rest. ELP and the Moody Blues in particular.
Yeah, the Moody Blues in particular since they're all still alive..._for now_.
That was awesome!! Although I agree about the disservice of Yes not being inducted for so many years.
hard to say if Wakeman missed his calling - easily a second career in stand-up - got tears in my eyes laughin so hard - "no, but I do"...
Rick Wakeman gave the best speech in the history of the Hall. What kind of man talks about strip clubs, erections and prostate exams during his Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction?
Yes was one of the most dynamic bands of the 70's. It amazes me that they were overlooked for the R&R honors for so many years. But their in now and a big congratulations to the band!
I find it amazing that although it was finally time for Yes to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it was Geddy and Alex who received the standing ovation.
I genuinely loved how Rick Wakeman was probably in his late-60s and make jokes like that, they were hilarious. It was definitely about time that Yes got inducted and I'm happy they're in, great musicians and undoubtedly fantastic contributors to the classic progressive rock sound of the 70s
They were always in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame Always..................................
And this is how I defined my youth.
My favorite band introducing another of my favorites and telling part of their own origin and powerful influence by the inductee band. It doesn't get much better. 8) I only wish Chris could've been there.
I really, really love YES and all the things they gave me to FEEL the music to travel with nothing but the music to be immensely happy. Thanks to Jon, Chris, Steve, Bill, Tony, Peter, Alan, Trevor, Geoff, Rick, Patrick, Trevor H., and the rest of Yes alumni who has gave us a wonderful journey in this brief lapse of time.
Yes, I really love you all!!!!!
It's amazing to watch legends talk about legends.
Rick never fails to give the goods
Magic Happens! They were so Electric back then in the early 70's & truly broke a lot of barriers, They truly never got the recognition that they rightfully deserved after all those years & were always under the radar from England's heavy weight Bands, Zep, Floyd Etc..... Nothing quite like them! From The Amazing S, Howes virtuoso extraordinaire, To Chris Squire, Perhaps & Arguably Rocks best Bass player ever, Wakeman, Bruford Anderson all demigods like mutations in evolution, & Trevor Rabin who resurrected & made his Mark & saved the band.... Thanks for the Memories
Rick pulled a perfect R&R HOF speech! What a nice bunch of guys. Love em all!
Great band inducting another great band. That's the way it should be.
About damn time! Guns n Roses being inducted five years before Yes is a travesty. Shows just how much of a joke the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is.
Nick Z Yup!
Even though I think that Guns N' Roses are amazing, I can't disagree to the fact that Yes was inducted way too late.
@@therealbricker guns n roses fucking blow. one allegedly good album and they get their asses licked for years.
Bill, that’s just your opinion. I personally love not only Appetite For Destruction, but also Use Your Illusion I and II, which are the superior albums in my opinion.
But you are allowed to love what you want, no worries.
It took too long to get Yes in there!
