    I notice similar patterns in the car industry and the software industry: a lot of the management can't be impressed with patterns that are seemingly "old" and "dated". The slider probably looked "cooler" and more "sexy" than the regular, perfectly usable volume knob. Reliable patterns that have been providing great usability for a long time don't have to be reinvented for the sake of reinvention!

I wonder why is it forbidden to use a phone in the car and then they allow for touchscreen for full airconditioning control and same for the radio. I've tried (not in this car) it and its freaking dangerous to play with AC on the touchscreen. There is no muscle memory for that when using screen, but it is for using dials and knobs.

No one of the stand could tell me much about the car. In the next few months I asked my dealer for information. Nothing. Then I tried VW headquarters in the UK. Nothing. No specification, no price, no delivery dates. Then I found out the car would not get a heating system for the battery.Then when I heard about the software problems, I realised there were some serious issues and cancelled my order. - While you could score the official range with city and countryside driving by reaching 13-14 kWh / 100 km, highspeed Autobahn driving (effective tested max. speed 165 km/h) resulted in about 23 kWh / 100 km.
    - The left capactive button fiel on the steering wheel lets you control the cruise control with +10 and -10 km/h by a deep click, and if you just click in a very soft and shallow way, you can control +1 and -1 km/h with the very same button... just have to be very gentle...

And those steering wheel buttons don't sound good. No 360 camera. HUD good. I know sustainability is the ID.3 thing, but the Golf majored on quality & detail which made it a hit for 47 years. ID.3 will have to be very competitively priced to temp Tesla Model 3 customers versus Tesla's vastly superior charging infrastructure. Many thanks indeed Thomas & Team for a great Review. Cheers.

      @@kitkat5337 Go look at the statistics in Norway for 2020. After a record breaking 2019 for the Model 3, it's flopping hard in 2020. Sales numbers collapsed after owners complained of bad customer service, delays in repairs and rust forming on their brand new cars. E-tron is the new ruler of the EV market there. You should look at Norway as the trend setter. People want cars that are reliable with good customer service which Tesla can't provide. It might be the best EV out there, but it still won't save it. It's like they have a flawed diamond here. Like you said, the hardware is really good but little things that made VW great seems to be disappearing - mainly around perceived quality. Why have soft-touch door cards on the Golf but not on this halo car? As for the haptic buttons - that needs to stop - let the electric motors and tech be the showcase, but keep things that work simply, like a knob and actual buttons stay, so we can appreciate all that innovation. Just think how much money the VW group spend on perfecting the clicks - only to take them away! haha. The interior seems to be letting the side down. Again, VW has an excellent 12" drivers display that I'm sure they could have repacked for the ID.3. That being said, I think I'd still choose this in my dream two-car garage - this as the daily driver, and a GT3 as a weekend car 😍 Great review as always Thomas.

If button would have been a wrong choice you wouldn't have seen them in a cockpit of an airplane or a rally car etc. Imagine a pilot sliding on a tablet. Of course that we are not pilots we are just drivers, but instead of sliding, pintching, navigating through a menu etc on a tablet, it's safer and faster to simply touch a button. However, it is true that a nice and good infotainment system requires agoid and nice tablet, which, by the way will eliminate the phisical buttons, which is good too. Most cars have split brake lights (some on the bonnet, some on the body) for this reason. Chevy Bolt has an extra set of lower lights below the bonnet on the car body. I imagine they did this so they could save on a separate wiring harness for lights on the bonnet itself. Whatever they did, I'm sorry but it's a bit of a mess. Corners like that are just asking to be broken or bent.

    • @hoedjeexplains3661
      @hoedjeexplains3661 4 года назад +2

      That is what happens when you have to develop 2 cars that compete with each other and are very different. They have to split the cost over the 2 models until they can ditch 1 of the 2. So it is in the best interest of VW fans to stop buying the ICE car and buy the BEV car, so that VW can get back at having semi-premium interiors. But a lot of those are hating on any BEV and will resist and stay buying ICE cars. So don’t expect VW to get back into semi-premium. People still have a hard time to accept that ICE is a dying bread. The solution to have kept the semi-premium interior was to work with a flexible platform like BMW does. Or like how the golf mk7 had a BEV version instead of a competing BEV model. VW did chose the long term best plan, so it is up to people to make the switch. And after the switch they can get back at what they do the best: offering German premium quality without charging the same German premium price

    • @hoedjeexplains3661
      @hoedjeexplains3661 4 года назад

      @@MaximilianvonPinneberg That would be very wasteful. The most expensive part to develop is the platform. And it is not simple to just switch it the engine compartment since that is an important part of the structure for crash safety. That is why the e-golf didn't have a changed hood, aside of the closed vents in the front. Changing the design is much less expensive. That is how Skoda is cheaper than VW. VW engineers the platform, and Skoda only adapts it to have a better focus on their value for money (and thus bigger bootspace compared to VW equivalent). So it wouldn't have changed much to the costs if the ID3 would share the same body paneling as the golf mk8. And the interior would be the same hard plastic mess since sharing body paneling doesn't change much. Their current approach is the best they could do without giving up the ICE cars. Now they have both an ICE Golf and they have a real BEV counterpart instead of a compliance car. This should kickstarter the switch to BEV and phasing out of ICE. The only way they could have done better was to scrap the ICE version and focus on the BEV. But the average consumer isn't ready yet to embrace BEV. The only alternative way that might have worked, is the convergence platform like BMW uses. But than you get a BEV based on an ICE and you lose a lot of the upsides of BEV, like a shorter hood, a frunk and it is heavier than a BEV on dedicated BEV platform. So for every consumer this should be a clear sign, if you want VW to again get into the more premium interiors, you should stop buying the ICE cars and start buying their BEV. It is the only way they don't have to develop an ICE product and a BEV product that competes with each other. But as long as they have to keep the ICE alive, we will see cost cutting everywhere because of the almost double cost of the split approach. But hopefully, if the ID.3 proves to be reliable, consumers will embrace the BEV future we are entering and quit their addiction to fossil fuel cars

      Remember his comments on how nicely the ID3 handled on the highway - that’s the long wheelbase: good to see they didn’t compromise relative to the short overall length.
      The mirror problem is avoided by doing it the safe way - adjusting them before driving, though his critiques of the controls is valid...

      - Michael Schneider - The Teslas to be built in Berlin may surprise you.
      That said, the visual tricks VW had to pull to make the ID3 look streamlined are truly something out of Detroit - the “need” for light paint on the front half of the C pillar is cuz the black half would be easier to register in your mind as visually awkward (as the back of the car actually is, cuz the bulk of the black upper is more easily seen against the blue bottom).
      Detroit’s EV version of this is Ford’s e-Mustang, which has similar C pillar black magic (though I think their’s has just a little more design integrity to it). Regarding both of them, I’d like to see how the poor underlying design affects the cars’ CD.
      But I think the ID3 is fixable, cuz all the weight of the car is low & between the axles: In such a short car, body overhang beyond the axles can be increased ~3cm (this would be the center half of the bumpers, with more severe angles to the outer bumpers wrapping to the wheel wells, so parking & turning would be no harder). Then move the back axle back ~3cm, increasing the wheel base by that much.
      This accomplishes: (1) an even longer wheelbase for better handling; (2) with the other changes an improved CD; and, (3) remember how tight the back seat seemed & the reviewer’s complaint about excess seat slope? Use all the rear ~6cm lengthening to expand the rear seating space, w/ seats more bucket-like, more leg room & better lumbar support; (4) move back the entire rear cargo area ~6cm; and (5) reshape the rear lines of the car from the tail lights up w/ flowing lines that don’t need the cosmetic coverup you see now. This redo also saves money at the paint shop.
      Do it at the next model year, along w/ simplification of controls & a redo of some of the interior hardscape. Then sell a bunch of EVs in America at US govt expense $7500/car!

    For the IO I have to say that for some parts you're absolutely right, like for the windows they should have just kept the old control interface. But for other parts like the temperature control I really think you will get used to it because in any other car you also have to look at the control unit to see, if you reached the temperature you wanted and you can can also change it via voice control . So maybe a longtime test will only show if it can or can not be intuitive in the every day use. I'm sure in the past, as touchscreens came into the cars, people have also said that it is very unintuitive and will never find it's way into a car and here we are.

    Love the new ID3. I have to agree with Thomas. Overall the new VW is great but it's not 100% perfect. I hope they fix the interior issues next time the car is updated. I really hope VW deletes the piano black plastic in the interior and decides to change the door switches and touch controls to something more sensible.

      @Z K Not an American, but he is right in a lot of ways. They added a lot of unnecessary new things just for the sake of it, all the capacitor buttons, like that touch button for choosing rear window operation. It is a step backwards for the sake of supposed innovation... I also think that they need to simplify their order system, with much more equipment included in designated packages instead of having to check every single item as additional equipment, makes it too time consuming for the customer during the buying(I once spent 3 hours specing out a Skoda Octavia at their dealership, and they have a system very close to VW) while also making their logistics a nightmare, they have to custom build every car for you due to insane amount of variables you can have with a car. Take Mazda for example, you have no additional options, just different trim levels with engine and color combinations, when you custom order your Mazda there is a great chance they have one already built somewhere, or at least already in the production pipeline.

    I have the feeling that it is a downgrade in many aspects, im drivin the Golf GTE (Facelift) and the interior is looking much better. This
    black piano lacquer on the steering wheel looks horrible. I also dont rly get why there is no way to display the map in front of you, sure you can use the hud but for me its a major flaw. The whole thing looks like a copy of a cheap sci-fi cockpit in a trash movie. Styling a bit like Tesla, not my cup of tea. Outside is decent though, if you like it well rounded of course (I prefer a more edgy look).
