I appreciate that you're using a handheld dynamic microphone for these reviews. It shows that you really care for - and understand - what makes for the best audio quality in these settings.
I have said this on pretty much every video for this car and I'll say it here again. The Short Range version uses LFP battery chemistry. Nobody mentions battery chemistry for some reason but it's worth mentioning as you can charge it to 100% with almost no battery degradation, as opposed to the regular lithium battery chemistry which should only be charged to 80% regularly to preserve long term battery health. Actually the long range version at 80% should have the same range as the short range version at 100%, so something to consider perhaps for some people. Also there are active vents above the front splitter in the LR version that close on the highway to improve the aero I believe.
LFP charging curve on MG4 is pretty bad at max 80kw (max marketing 115kw) vs 140kw for NMC as seen in tests. For long trips both are used from 10 to 80%.

No other brand delivers this price-value. Wish the seats were a tiny bit more supporting + I really do not like the rear design. But still, it could be my next car. I now drive a Model S, so it would be something totally different ;-)
Thomas gone bananas 🤣 I find this MG4 quite compelling, even the entertainment isn't all that slow. 4:44 halogen bulbs for the rear turn signals, come on it's 2023 MY. 8:41 I find the camera quite ok, it even has 360 which Teslas don't.
Halogens are great for cost saving especially for the turn signals. If you want LED turn signals with smooth blinking light then you'll need a PWM module (PWM is the reason why you see some LED lights flashing on and off in camera but not visible to human eyes) which control the dimming effect for the light and will add even more cost to the car while halogen bulbs don't need all of that to have the smooth blinking effect.
Nice review again Thomas! The design to some extend resembles the Toyotya Prius mark 4. The front does for sure. But the back, though diffrent, has also has some quirky design traits.

Turn off LKA, and use TJA together with ACC - that's what other MG4 owners have recommended, and this gives a similar result to Tesla's Autopilot (whilst not being a true autopilot).
Why do car manufacturers put soft touch materials on top of the dash where you almost never touch, but not by the window where you regularly rest your elbow?
The number of EVs you see in the streets are really increasing. Today driving from Munich to Frankfurt. I saw a lot of them driving behind a Lorry. They must really have a lot of free time.
Excellent test, it's nice to see that you also treat cheaper cars and new players on the market with respect. I would like you to test the MG Marvel R, I had a test drive and was very positively surprised. In regards to price/quality is a very nice car! I liked the fact the driver's mirror was set back little more ( making it easier for children and animals to see ) in relation to the dead man's mirror.
EVs from China are really taking over the EV car industry. Why bother paying twice the price for a Tesla Model 3, which is also made in China, when there are some great alternatives now.
Tesla has its own niche and following, similar to Apple, so people will buy it regardless of what Elon does, what the build quality is or what things they take away with over the air updates. The rest are badge snobs who are happy to pay 6-10k more just to have a badge that the neighbours recognise.
I hate how they normalized "cheap cars" being 30/40k now. You should call out manufacturers more on this matter. Just look at their financials, they want to transition to EV without making any sacrifice and onloading every cent possible on the consumers.
and with the way governments are at war with ICE vehicles with taxation, we'll soon have no choice but to pay 30-40k for an "alright" car and be thankful for it
You are wrong, it is the legislation. European legislation has set CO2 targets which manufacturers can only achieve by selling enough EVs, in fact the EV sales offset the ICE cars, but the targets become stricter and stricter over the coming decade. You can't call out a manufacturer for following legislation targets... From 2035 on ICE sales will be banned anyway, except for those who run on green fuels only. Hydrogen would also be an option, at least in theory as they are interpreted as 0 CO2 in legislation.
I really like this car. i do not know why people are so obsessed with fast acceleration. It isn't like you are driving in a racing track. I appericiate a car more when it slowly increases in acceleration, that way I don't get shocked or nervous like I do in roller coasters.

I had a testdrive today with MG4. Very interesting car, nice to drive! But a have problems at my cervical spine and getting in and out of the car isn´t comfy at all; feels like the door cutout is just not high enough for me personally, I had to pull my head in very far when getting in and out of the car =/ Not a problem of the car I think but for myself. -.-
Excellent, well balanced thorough review. It's certainly a tempting proposition for the price. (p.s. your video's always make me nostalgic for my three years living in Germany)
Interesting how all the heavy vehicles (hav) are all in the slow lanes on motorway. In Australia they’d be spread out across the lanes cause it’s a free for all for them. Really shows how the hgv 80km/h limit is so effective and why we need it in Au asap.
Hopefully they can iron out the niggles as it has huge potential. It's price point should not excuse fit and finish or functionality of what is actually fitted. I note that many reviewers excuse badly fitted panels and seat covers, or even functional issues with it's price. I believe the UK spec does not have a heat pump.
Hey Karen, the early model3 had terrible panel gap, glues failing, patchy inconsistant paint, but, demand exceeded supply. This MG3 is higjer quality but vaslty cheaper.
9:27 interesting... this is exactly what i proposed in other video about Canoo vehicle (TFLEV channel) yesterday without knowing this MG can already do that! and i love that! real buttons on the steering wheel (gloss black though) and you can operate HVAC with that... clever!
I realise that this is a budget car, but I cannot understand excluding a rear wiper and a rear centre head restraint, inexpensive and essential safety items. I also thought it drove well, but wouldn't consider it with these omissions, as it makes it only a 4 seater.
09:27 Does the climate control triggered on the steering wheel (with the ☆ programmable button and adjusted with the joystick nearby) also displays the climate graphic pop-over sheet on the screen while under Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? And if so, without quitting the smartphone mirroring UI?
Thomas you said they use letherette for the seats but what about the steering wheel? the other thing is i have seen a review of the MG5 which has the charging port at the front, they should have done the same with the MG4 because it is the best place for it i feel.
@@autogefuehl thank you but that is very disapointing that they still think its acceptable to use animal skin, so i am looking foward to seeing the new mini or the new EV fiesta which i am sure Thomas will review.
Great review, interesting comment at the beginning their will be a two engine sub 4 sec version coming if they price that right over the Telsa M3 performance then they will also have a winner their..
@@edvoon Well the replies so far proves it's polarising. Anyway I agree with modern ICE car design.. There's an over reliance on styling the grills to stand out. As a result grills had become massive and over emphasised to the point many of them are fucking ugly.
@@hurbrowns5397 The replies do not prove anything. Most people simply do not make comments at all and those that do have for whatever reason a strong urge to share their opinion. This leads to comment sections and social media not being very representative to the general consensus whatever it might be.
This is the car that will take over tesla . Personally think tesla is better but the unaffordable price is a turn off for me £25000 or under is more reasonable
Love the car and will probably order one this year. but so many odd choices made on this car. No rear interior lights... at all. haven't seen cars like that since the 80s. Halogen rear turn lights. can't add roof rails at all. Zero ambient lighting in the car at all. Drive mode buried in the menus no wireless car play in 2023 (I know it launched in 2022m but still) I know they needed to make cuts for it to be a budget car, but some of these added extras would not have been expensive...
Hi Thomas, nice Video, I love your videos of cars that the „normal“ consumer can buy. In the last few month this was not the case and that’s a shame. It would be very nice if you could also test the new HONDA CIVIC 😊.
32K not even close, that's always a false price, more like 38K as you said, affordable ? 38K is not a small price even for Europeans. Affordable is around maybe 20K !
20k is affordable in the world of ICE cars. 38k is the affordable in EV world except in China where there are already truly affordable EVs with price ranging from 10k - 20k USD.
I ordered the luxury version(so the top one). Final price is 35K. The Spanish government will give me 7.5K for buying an electric car, which leaves this one in 27.5K. I think it's quite a good price.
@@autogefuehl Really I have Trophy on order top range in UK .And there is no mention of a heat pump.I know the Cupra Born (ID 3) you have to pay extra for a heat pump .
This vehicle looks good but the overall shape looks like the Volkswagen ID.3 along with the gaugue cluster and infotainment screen location and the infotainment system software looks like a car-version of GNOME 3.38 or the original mock-up of the Phosh mobile UI for GNOME Shell on computers, Smartphones running Linux with X11/Wayland display server which is not a bad thing but looks kinda dated compared to the infotainment systems of other autos and computer software which has moved away from a skeuomorphic UI design.
This car is going to dominate the EV market in Australia. Especially if they can keep the price around $40k drive-away. The MG3 and MG ZS already lead their respective markets so the brand obviously resonates well with Australians.
Gonna be a dog fight with BYD. For a little bit more money you can get the Atto 3 crossover, and if you can live with a slightly smaller car, you can pay less and get an Atto 2 (Dolphin) hatchback.

Hello, I have seen the video from spain. I gave you a like because you made a really good video. Thanks!
Cheers!!
Yeah but a normal salary is like 60k euro a year now
So this car is like half a year salary very cheap
@@KAD010900not in all eu countries my friend...
Here in Greece the salary is like 10k+-5k a year go figure
I really like this car. i do not know why people are so obsessed with fast acceleration. It isn't like you are driving in a racing track. I appericiate a car more when it slowly increases in acceleration, that way I don't get shocked or nervous like I do in roller coasters.
Also ich muss mal den Moderator loben. Toll gesprochen, vor allem auch das Englisch -davon ausgehend er ist deutscher.
Besten Dank!

Good review as always, when will you make the long range test/upload the video?
Cheers! Gotta see how much interest people will have on this video to decide to do a follow up!
Würd ich mir gut überlegen in der heutigen Zeit ein chinesisches Auto zu kaufen...
Thanks for the feedback!
@@autogefuehl You are a little bit taller than me; which impression did you have getting in and out of the car? Was it comfy for you?
Great review, thank you for including Miles per kWh conversion.
🙌🙌
Im getting fed up waiting for my ID3. Ordered October 2021, and I has been knocked back to June with no definite date. This is tempting me.
Excellent, well balanced thorough review. It's certainly a tempting proposition for the price. (p.s. your video's always make me nostalgic for my three years living in Germany)
Welcome 🤗
Very nice video. Very helpful and informative 👍 👌
Cheers please recommend!!
About adaptive cruise control; hyundai kona or mg4 better for city traffic jam usage?
9:27 interesting... this is exactly what i proposed in other video about Canoo vehicle (TFLEV channel) yesterday without knowing this MG can already do that! and i love that! real buttons on the steering wheel (gloss black though) and you can operate HVAC with that... clever!
Nice review. It's nice to get your subjective take on the car, and you provide a lot of objective data on the car. Good job, I really like this car
Thanks 🙏
MG is killing the market and hopefully cause some healthy competition with other motor companies.
Wish some good budget options made it to Canada/North America
I realise that this is a budget car, but I cannot understand excluding a rear wiper and a rear centre head restraint, inexpensive and essential safety items. I also thought it drove well, but wouldn't consider it with these omissions, as it makes it only a 4 seater.
Fixed in the 2023 version. Wipers and head rest included. Also one pedal driving.
I have just ordered a trophy model in white
Enjoy 😊
Like watching your great reviews with so much detail that is always appreciated thank you. Will you d reviewing the Honda Civic Ehev soon.
cheers! yes indeed in 2 weeks!
Extreme wind noise in my opinion. My 10 years old golf is like a limousine in comparison
3:30 Banana to scale 😂
Fun fact: The ID.3 sold in China is exclusively produced by SAIC Volkswagen, with a MEB-factory located in Jiading, Shanghai.
interesting!
If there was one car I could bring over to the US, it would be this one.
Chucked my CLA35 in for an MG4, I just can't hate this car for the price. Do I miss the Merc Burmeister yes that's all..
Are the turn indicators at the back incandescent bulbs? That is weird for an electric car (or any modern car).
yeah, I haven't had a car without LED turn signals for about 10 years (it was the first qashqai)
No rear middle seat head rest ?
no rear dome lights either. I don't think the Chinese like rear passengers.
I am 100% getting that colour
What is the revieewed cars aussstattung? Comfort or Luxury?
Luxury
09:27 Does the climate control triggered on the steering wheel (with the ☆ programmable button and adjusted with the joystick nearby) also displays the climate graphic pop-over sheet on the screen while under Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? And if so, without quitting the smartphone mirroring UI?
The climate control does display without closing Apple CarPlay not sure about Android Auto but I assume it’s the same.
Thomas you said they use letherette for the seats but what about the steering wheel? the other thing is i have seen a review of the MG5 which has the charging port at the front, they should have done the same with the MG4 because it is the best place for it i feel.
The configurator says: steering wheel is leather free in lower trims but in the (shown) high trim it is animal skin.
@@autogefuehl thank you but that is very disapointing that they still think its acceptable to use animal skin, so i am looking foward to seeing the new mini or the new EV fiesta which i am sure Thomas will review.
@@autogefuehl sorry Brian i will look forward to see you review the EV mini or Fiesta as well.
I reverse into my driveway, so the MG4’s charging port position is ideal for me.
yeah agree, but overall they dont seem to be that fond of animal skin anymore at least
I was waiting for this 😁
its priced at 27 thousand in Ireland
No heat pump shown in specs though. Long range (64kwh) is showing 31k and top spec long range is at 34.5k (today's advertised prices).
Great review, interesting comment at the beginning their will be a two engine sub 4 sec version coming if they price that right over the Telsa M3 performance then they will also have a winner their..
cheers! feel free to recommend us! :)
Gamechanger. E for the masses.
When is 40k car become cheep, this is why electric car will never succeed
Yes affordable 🤩 and polarizing design.
how is that polarizing. It's ugly as all other EV cars are, especially the affordable ones.
How is that polarizing? It's beautiful as all other EVs are. Unlike the ugly ICE vehicles with their big gaping Grilles. Urgh!
Almost as ugly as Leaf, Zoe, ID3, I3, etc. 😅
I was waiting for your review @Thomas - vielen Dank.
Please do a review on BYD Atto 3.

@@autogefuehl Thank You 🙂
Thomas' reflection at 11:52. Looks like a cinematic decision
👍😄
okay great.. but how would it fair against a 2ndhand tesla that is only 10%-20% more expensive?
Comparing new with an old/used car? That's a totally different proposition of apples and oranges
@@bodrulm1 agreed, but that's the world we live in.. we have apples, oranges and bananas to choose from
3 year second hand TM3 is about 50% more.
You say in your video that this MG4 Trophy has a heat pump, is just for the European Market ??
it depends on the market spec indeed!
The UK model does not have underfloor storage for cables. Is this a new design iteration for everyone or eu model specific?
What else is there?
i looked at one in a showroom today in the UK, it had underfloor storage for cables...
When do you plan to review new Honda Civic e:hev?
In about 2 weeks!
How well does it emergency brake?
Love the car and will probably order one this year. but so many odd choices made on this car.
No rear interior lights... at all. haven't seen cars like that since the 80s.
Halogen rear turn lights.
can't add roof rails at all.
Zero ambient lighting in the car at all.
Drive mode buried in the menus
no wireless car play in 2023 (I know it launched in 2022m but still)
I know they needed to make cuts for it to be a budget car, but some of these added extras would not have been expensive...
Hi,
I'd like to buy the same watch you have 😁. Can you tell what's the brand? Regards
Hey, it’s Alpina
@@autogefuehl thank you :).
Charging gun is the correct term in English too, we historicaly use it to refer to fuel pump guns
interesting!
Hi Thomas, nice Video, I love your videos of cars that the „normal“ consumer can buy. In the last few month this was not the case and that’s a shame. It would be very nice if you could also test the new HONDA CIVIC 😊.
thanks Michael! Yes we ll have the Civic very soon here!
Only £25k in UK. That's very affordable for a brand new car especially without needing to put expensive fossil fuel and pay high tax.
Note that in some countries the purchase of an EV is subsidized by the state. So you could get 8-10k off the final price.
in Germany you get like 8-9 k off that price for small EVs atm
I ordered the luxury version(so the top one). Final price is 35K. The Spanish government will give me 7.5K for buying an electric car, which leaves this one in 27.5K. I think it's quite a good price.
I thought it was a very compelling car until you mentioned it was Chinese owned.
Try MG HS Exclusive Auto
Heat Pump ???I believe it does not have a heat Pump in any model
In the higher trims it does
@@autogefuehl Really I have Trophy on order top range in UK .And there is no mention of a heat pump.I know the Cupra Born (ID 3) you have to pay extra for a heat pump .
@@autogefuehl Hi it looks like after some research the heat pump is included in the EU model but not the UK model .
@@autogefuehl no heat pump in any uk specification car's!
Omg that’s so weird!!
32 000€? Why is this same car more expensive then in the UK? In UK this car costs 26 000£ which is around 29 500€!
UK sell lower trim versions also without heat pump
No heat pump even the MG MARVEL R is better looking and more range than this car !!
But Marvel R consumes like fat etron?
Do these sales price include VAT? And if so, how much is VAT?
these were prices including VAT indeed. 19 % in Germany
The gap is for door opening
ID3 killer!!!
Do you have a shared spotify playlist? I love your taste in music
