That 3.5 EcoBoost is such and underrated engine with TONS of potential! And for those crying about reliability just remember the 3.5 has forged internals that make this engine stronger than a stock 5.0 found in the F150, plus the turbos ste water cooled as well.
But how long until you would grenade the rest of the drive train. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with the drive train just that I doubt that it was built to take anywhere ne’er that kind of HP and torque. If you did anything like this I’m sure it would be fine if you only tap into that power on rare occasions but if you hot rod dead it a lot your probably going to be picking parts up off the road.
Ecoboost is a fine engine but the 3.5 as delivered will not take as much power as the 5.0 as delivered. Sealed Ecoboosts are at the limit in the 700rwhp range. There are sealed Coyotes making over 1200rwhp.
Michael Corbett - Ford did produce a twin-turbo Coyote V8 but my understanding is packaging and cost influenced the GT500 engine going supercharged instead. However, if you consider the HP required to drive a supercharger, that GT500 engine is capable of producing a lot more power in a twin-turbo configuration.
I'm talking a V8 with the performance tech in the ecoboost, unless im mistaken the Coyote is not direct I ejection like the ecoboost. Take that and a twin turbo set up you've got to be looking at close to 500hp/500ft pounds on a reliable fairly economic tune.
My cousin works for ford. He said they were able to push 800hp out of the 3.5 with no mods, just a computer. This was in a SHO. He said ford took them out on the track in Dearborn, michigan.
Awesome, I have an 18 with the 2.7 eb. Coming from a 01 Lighting that 13mpg on a good day. Let the kids have their sound, cause I don't miss it one bit. Same with the mpg
That is more than impressive, its incredible! If people dont spend time at the track then maybe they dont get it but it is blistering fast for a truck.
Yes the driveline will hold. 10r80 = 10 speed/rearwheel application/800 TQ. T case is built well and the Diffs are insane strong. This would be reliable daily even at that power.
When I saw the 720 hp Ford F-150 Heading November 2019 I skipped the video thinking it was a SuperCharged 5.0. Recently I dropped a 3.5 Raptor Crate engine into my 1966 F100 & a week ago had it on the dyno. On initial tune E51 vs E85 I saw very close numbers. 602.93 HP @ 5700 and 657.64 TQ @ 3500. This is in a truck that only weighs 3980 lbs. Found this video now realizing it was the 3.5. Unreal the amount of power they will make. My numbers were lower than actual because the PCM tq management closed throttle 4 times during a 13 second dyno run. Out this morning trying to get a datalog and it was nothing but tire spin attempting a 2000-6000 rpm run in 3rd gear. I do have the larger Garrett intercooler but stock other than that plus tune. Still running the stock airbox and OEM air filter. Had the PCM not closed throttle I think 700 TQ was possible. My truck is getting 25 mpg on 91 & 20 mpg on E51. This is after 3500 miles of testing.
ecoboost engines are no joke. def can be a headache to work on as they are a lil more complicated but they are torque monsters. I got vids of my mustang on my channel and that little 2.3 makes more hp than my mom's coyote with some bolt ons and a tune. I maxed out at 460 ft pds tq but that's because with the 2.3 you need to swap the block or reinforce it. It has all forged internals unlike some of the other engines but that aluminum open deck block can only take about 500 hp. Truck guys are lucky they get those iron blocks.
I have had both. 2016 3.5 ecoboost single turbo with tune dyno at 493hp at rear wheels (91 octane)- Lighter, felt easy to manuver and stop. Intense power band had a lot of fun in that truck! now have a 2018 5.0 with Roush phase 2 supercharger right at 620hp at rear wheels (91 octane)- weight difference is very noticeable (both trucks super crew 5.5 box) much harder to stop, sport mode and tow/haul play a much bigger role in stoping and manuvering but the supercharger power is so much more consistent it will pin you to the seat well into 7th. 3.5 when playing you have to really drive it, keeping rpm up, manual shit was prefered. 5.0 sport mode all day. ecoboost is fun as hell, 5.0 is all business. 5.0 gets the eco out of the dig all day. If i had to pick its very close but i would say i like the 5.0 better. The eco is almost more of a toy. the sound of the 5.0 is the other seller. i run MAGNA Flow CAT back, it just sounds nasty! if i buy another eco it will be 2 door and i'm gonna drop it and do coil overs so i can huck it through turns, utilizing the toy aspect of it. i could get the eco to bark the tires at 45mph but the 5.0 will bark the tires at 65-70 simplest way i can say it 3.5= bad boy, 5.0= bad man both trucks are well worth the $$ about $3000 difference in build price. Hope this is helpful to someone.
You forget to add to any one who actually uses their truck for actual work like a truck is meant to do as in pulling things that the 3.5 ecoboost has max towing capacity of 14,000 lbs.
Wow! An 11.6 @ 116? Pretty impressive? I'd say that's extraordinary impressive! And I think that's more than fast enough to destroy Dodge's new TRX Hellcat powered whatever... No wonder Ford doesn't stress about making the Lightning anymore. These EcoBoost's are beasts! These 700 lb lighter (than the previous generation) aluminum bodies and 10-speed automatic really woke these trucks up. And lest anyone should say that " hey, I just can't stomach a V6 ", the 5 liter Coyote F-150s run as well or better with superchargers+tuning. So you truly can't have your cake and eat it too with an F-150. Excellent job Ford! Great video and great tuning work guys. Let's go!!!
You can get 700hp from a hemi 5.7 with a super charger it's been done and still doing it. Problem is with these trucks you can't tow because they get hot and run on high temperatures these is nothing new.

EcoBoost is only eco when you don't spool the turbos. As a 2.7 owner that's pretty much impossible, I get 13 city, but I can also get about 28 hwy if I have it on cruise.
Ok to help put those numbers in perspective I personally took my 07 yamaha r1 yes a thousand cc bike down the 660 track at 7 flat at 112 mph and this truck was only a car length behind
Since when have drag racers cared about a warranty? I would have no problem running a mild street tune on the 3.5 or 2.7 Ecoboost to push it to around 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. They can easily handle it if the tuner knows what they are doing.

If the EcoBoost is so great then why did Ford make the 5.0L Coyote V8 in the F150 in the first place. Also why they haven't put the EcoBoost in the Super Duty nor the Ford Medium duty trucks if its so great and so unstoppable.
@@CJColvin Bc you know how crazy everyone would go if Ford didn’t keep a V8 in their trucks? Not saying the 5.0 is shit I love that engine too. But people put the ecoboost down a lot and never give it the light of day. I never mentioned heavy duty trucks in the first place I was simply talking about the F-150s and not the 250s and so on. Seems to be holding up just fine. Might not hold up long term, but 700+ horsepower and 750+ lb-ft at the crank is impressive on stock engine and turbos.
Makes me miss my EcoBoost f150... my fastest recorded 0-60 was 4.9 seconds tuned with a 5 star tune.. never made it to the track, but 4wd boosted launch nothing touched me until after 100km/h (62mph)
Now the question is, what's the best mpg 5 star can get out of a stock 3.5 on 87 octane? It's a small engine, can they get it over the 30mpg mark? And if so, at what sacrifice to power?
Having owned the ecoboost and now the coyote, I can tell you that the ecoboost stock is no slouch ( provided you get the one with the turbos) both stock, in a race the ecoboost will be off the line first always, add a tune ....not sure but I would still think that the ecoboost will hold its own. There is a reason why they test ecoboost and not coyote, it's a quicker truck...having said that I love my v8 but I do miss the ecoboost....

How is it that the 2.7 breaks drive shafts when tuned (albeit towing a trailer) but the tuned 3.5 stays together? Does the 3.5 use different driveline components?
look up boosted f150 he is running regular cab 2018 5.0 with a a whipple hes in low 10s in 1/4 mile all his Driveline is stock . He broke his transfer case but it was after some wheel hop and it cracked a hole on in the case and didn't know still put 1000 Miles on it and several runs. Transfer case went out because he was switching out of 4 wheel drive mid run
Let’s see, a turbo engine that is tuned. Will it be reliable? No, it will be the least reliable vehicle ever. The engine and parts of the vehicle aren’t made to withstand those pressures. Some dudes at a tune shop do not know more or better than the engineers who designed these cars. Why do you think the Tacoma has a steady six cylinder. So it will run for a million miles. I’m sick of turbos. And I would definitely never have one tuned.
Bryan J I hear you. But I’m not keeping any car past 100k miles. Shit, since 2012, I’ve bought 5 new cars. I’m loving my 2019 ford raptor supercrew. Nothing Toyota or any other maker can produce that will compete with the Raptor. I’m out here having a blast with it.
How about doing all this in a 2WD regular cab short bed, dropping about 900-1000 pounds? Would need a little suspension work and drag tires, but it could be done.
I wonder what the power #'s and longevity is at 100% duty cycle (aka fully loaded trailer and gvwr). Also why not make the 3.5 ecoboost available in the 250/350 trucks. I'd wager that duty cycle is a factor (even in stock form). I like the way the ecoboost tows, a lot like a diesel.
The engine can probably handle quite a bit of power because the internals are forged from the factory minus the Pistons themselves which are cast aluminum but the rods and crankshaft are forged.
I have a 2018 3.5. what tune would you recommend if it’s my daily driver? I have mishimoto intercooler and piping, spd turbo adapters and spd downpipe.
A lot of naysayers here as far as "it wont last long at this power level", we really cant make that claim just yet. I can imagine it probably would last quite awhile unless the owner is consistently beating the crap out of it. Personally, i would like to see one with these mods and this tune make the 200k mile mark with a mixture of heavy abuse and normal driving.

That 3.5 EcoBoost is such and underrated engine with TONS of potential! And for those crying about reliability just remember the 3.5 has forged internals that make this engine stronger than a stock 5.0 found in the F150, plus the turbos ste water cooled as well.
It's got an open deck block though. Not knocking it, I have one.
Is there any update on how the transmission, drive shaft and engine withstood this monster? And how can I have this done to my ecoboost?
Just imagine a direct inejection twin turbo V8....
Hell the Coyote with a small twin turbo setup can get 700hp without breaking a sweat.
Coyote is 10x the platform that the ecoboost is.
@@ChuckBeefOG What do you mean?
Or just put the GT500 engine in it.
A AWD Mustang with this engine would be wicked fast
Someone will do it

thats fast for a car lol
Yes the driveline will hold. 10r80 = 10 speed/rearwheel application/800 TQ. T case is built well and the Diffs are insane strong. This would be reliable daily even at that power.
I thought it was only 595 TQ for the 10r80
@@edmeyer4800 Close, 590 lbft. The 80 is short for 800nm, not ftlb.
@@aggieforester05 I wonder what kinda Transmission guys will use once they decide to bump the TQ above and beyond 590
The driver for 5 Star looked scared!!
The eco is almost more of a toy. the sound of the 5.0 is the other seller. i run MAGNA Flow CAT back, it just sounds nasty! if i buy another eco it will be 2 door and i'm gonna drop it and do coil overs so i can huck it through turns, utilizing the toy aspect of it. i could get the eco to bark the tires at 45mph but the 5.0 will bark the tires at 65-70
simplest way i can say it 3.5= bad boy, 5.0= bad man both trucks are well worth the $$ about $3000 difference in build price. Hope this is helpful to someone.
You forget to add to any one who actually uses their truck for actual work like a truck is meant to do as in pulling things that the 3.5 ecoboost has max towing capacity of 14,000 lbs.
But I use mine for both fun and work so
Let's go!!!

Chevy and Ram fans are like.... “¯\_(ツ)_/¯ who needs that much power”
You can get 700hp from a hemi 5.7 with a super charger it's been done and still doing it. Problem is with these trucks you can't tow because they get hot and run on high temperatures these is nothing new.

5 star offers a powertrain warranty for cheap.
Since when have drag racers cared about a warranty? I would have no problem running a mild street tune on the 3.5 or 2.7 Ecoboost to push it to around 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. They can easily handle it if the tuner knows what they are doing.

How is it that the 2.7 breaks drive shafts when tuned (albeit towing a trailer) but the tuned 3.5 stays together? Does the 3.5 use different driveline components?
That was a fluke, also, towing is a different scenario, with pinion angles, loads and axle wrap. Traction bars would have avoided that.

Let’s see, a turbo engine that is tuned. Will it be reliable? No, it will be the least reliable vehicle ever. The engine and parts of the vehicle aren’t made to withstand those pressures.
So that means they can take that White Ford Explorer ST right outside their garage and bump the HP up in it again!

Personally, i would like to see one with these mods and this tune make the 200k mile mark with a mixture of heavy abuse and normal driving.
so how long until major repairs are needed (turbo, heads/valves, or crank/rods)? I like extra power, but love longevity and dependability.
