  • Sorry, some skips in audio Performance is from an HBO special "60's Rock Scrapbook" at Magic Mountain, Valencia, CA. Rob Grill and Dennis Provisor made a special appearance with the 1979 GR's lineup: Scott Hoyt (lead vocals, guitar), Brian Carlyss (bass), Gene Wall (keyboards), and Reagan McKinley (drums).

Great sound! Rob is fiiiine! I miss Warren Entner in this video. OMG, his voice! I can hear it so clearly on Live for Today, "One, two, three, four!
    Shah-la, la-la-la-la, live for today
    Shah-la, la-la-la-la, live for today
And don't worry 'bout tomorrow, ay-ay-ay
Shah-la, la-la-la-la live for today (live for today)" and on Midnight Confessions, "There's a little gold ring you wear on your hand
    Makes me understand
There's another before me, you'll never be mine
    I'm wastin' my time!"
Sooo good! In 1968, Warren Entner and drummer Rick Coonce were contestants on the game show The Dating Game. Entner remained with the band until 1973, leaving the Grass Roots after the Alotta Mileage album. He was involved on the production side of some of the group's later work on which he participated, and later he left to go into music management. It was an amicable parting and he and the remaining and newer members of the band stay friends to this day. I really love in this video how someone replaced Dennis Provisor on keyboards and Rob brought him up to sing the chorus in Midnight Confessions.❤ The members of this band were equally adept at blue-eyed soul, folk-rock, and bubblegum music, mixing the styles often. I laugh at Rob jokingly calling the band's engagements "The Geritol Tour" not long before his passing away due to complications from a fall at home. He was 67. I really miss this music. It was created in a time when things were so innocent. Family dinners still existed, with all members of the family expected at the table and Sunday was pot roast night. I was so blessed to have older siblings and friends who love this music as much as I do even from a young age. It was the bomb being a kid in the 60s, and a teenager in the 70s! Then in my twenties in the 80s! What a blessing! Some really great music came out of those decades.

      C. Smith - I saw Rob at least a half dozen times from the 80's to the early 2000's and wow... I remember him calling his Grass Roots show 'The Geritol Tour' in the later years! He was a doll ❤️
That Dating Game clip I had posted here on my channel but RUclips must've taken it down. And I lost the original video file. 😩 Hopefully someone downloaded it and will repost it!

I babysat for Rob Grill and his wife Darlene for several years in the 70s, I started watching their son Christian when he was five months old. Rob was one of the nicest men I have ever met. I went to numerous concerts when he performed locally. He was a fantastic performer, listening to all these songs brings back a lot of great memories. I am 68 years old now

Jelly of you, lol! I was born in 66, so I was little , but I'm autistic , my daddy was a musician, so we had music all the time, all different sorts, and though I have liked all genres since I was able to listen, dance, and finally sing, guitar pop rock bands are what I miss most. The last really good pop rock guitar bNd that I remember coming out wS Matchbox 20. There's been a few one hit orders since, but the pop and Spotify charts are, by and large, abysmal . As a trained singer myself, I abhor Autotune, it takes the personality out of a voice. I WANT to hear your voice and it's expressiveness, not a flat tone in place of a voice. I can recognize many Singers, guitarists, bassists, keyboard and plants, drummers, percussion, just bu their style, well, at least before Autotune. Geez, I played jazz in school, so I know a lot of the old big band and ja,z greats just by the tone of their instrument. That is my long winded was to say I love The Grass Roots, and bands like The Box Tops, Big Star, and numerous others I'm too high to think of now, lol! I've noticed a whole helluva lot of kids of all colors and cultures getting more into older music, and the only reason I can think of is they're bored what the corporations want them to hear. My kids like all kinds of music, so remember, us older folks, hope is not yet lost, lol! Expose your kids or grandkids to this kind of stuff, and other stuff you liked. Let them make the decision. It's a helluve lot more family friendly than whatever on Spotify, lol! Sorry for the novel, just thought the thought, "if you don't expose your loved ones to music that you like, you may never know if they might like it! ❤ God Bless, Allah Akbar, Blessed Be, and Namaste. ❤

Just imagine today's so called "artists" getting up on a stage without autotune, robot drum machines and just performing like these guys and all the other bands of that era? These people were sufficient musicians such that they sang on key and in harmony with one another with discernable melodic lines and on themes like love, breaking up/loneliness and the like rather than odes to their bitches, "ho's" and plans to gun down their enemies. Grass Roots weren't profound, just plain fun. How pop music has degenerated in the 50+ years I first sang along to my AM radio. Pop music of 2022 is entirely formulaic, scripted by computer programs. These guys weren't afraid to get on a stage and make a few mistakes with a truly live set. Nice to be reminded of when "artists" really were musicians.

In my world "Midnight Confession" is EPIC!!!
    Trivia Fsct;
When they first released "Midnight Confession" 1968 the Grass Roots appeared live at the Rolling Hills Theatre located in Rolling Hills area of South Bay area, east of the Redondo/Hermosa Beach areas, and at the northern base of Palos Verdes. It was a huge event that packed the theatre that day. I was 8 yrs old and my Babysitter took one of my brothers and I there. It was super exciting, and they held this big dance contest divided up in age groups. When they called my age group to the front, my babysitter urged me on to go down and be part of the contest. So, we lined up each side of the band and they played Midnight Confession and danced my little 8 yr old heart out lol. I can remember feeling very self concious, yet I put forth alot of effort. I remember one of band members saying to another " look at her go!" Lol. I have no idea which band members they were at all. I cant remember now who was who, but he had a guitar in front of him. They really were performing, no lip sync 😊 I didnt win in my age category, a girl probably 10 yrs old did, and I was so disappointed 😂.
How fortunate I am to have had that opportunity at such a young age.

It's a travesty, that because of their body of work they are not in the hall of fame. Which, by the way, is a joke! However, the reason is... they were never really a "band". They were a money-making concept contrived by the music label. Other than Rob Grill, the entire "band" was a revolving door of studio and union musicians. In the history of The Grassroots there have been over 50 musicians that contributed to the success of the concept. Also, many songs were written by other people. If anything, because Rob Grill was the longest lasting member, lead singer and face of the band, He should be in the HOF without question. It will never happen because the HOF has nothing to do with fame, popularity or body of work. It's a business that has more to do about money and politics rather than music. Think I'm lying? Tell me why Ozzy, Bad Company, Boston, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Dolly Parton, Warren Zevon, Motor Head, Iron Maiden, Connie Francis, Todd Rundgren, Snoop Dog, etc... Rob Grill, was the man. I was fortunate to have seen them and spoke to some of the guy's. They were awsome. My wife then loved these guys. They had some great hits. But missing Rob after and some other lead I saw here on you tube. Cant be compared. He was one of those voices that cant be replaced.

I got to see them in Cumberland, Maryland in 1971 when they had the quintet. I think that was when the group was at it's absolute strongest! Almost 30 years later in the early 2000's, my wife and I got to see them in Pittsburgh at an oldies concert sponsored by radio station 94.5 WWWS! Rob Grill hadn't lost a step and was still one super performer! His on stage humor was second to no one! We miss you Rob!

I saw them once great show. I believe it was around this time frame. They were touring hitting the local music venues around the country. Unfortunately bands can’t do this anymore. A lot of the music venues have become dance venues where they pay a dj to play electronica and overcharge for drinks.

From about 1977 to 1983 or so, both Magic Mountain & Disneyland had “Late Entry” tickets at either 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm as a teenager it was great, for $4.00 you could get into the park ride a few rides and at Magic Mountain watch a concert in the amphitheater or at Disney they had 4 nightclubs for teenagers with different music genres. Was an awesome time to be a teen in So Cal.

I got my first car in 1975, had a decent AM radio. I loved driving the backs roads with the windows down and my favorite Top 40 AM station turned on, crank up the volume for a Grass Roots song. You could never play the Grass Roots too loud.

  • @SkeltonKnaggsLives

If Rob and Dennis "partied hard" before this show, they sure don't show it. Maybe others can see it but I can't-- their performance sure doesn't suffer any. It's a great show, and the cute girls are everywhere! Dennis was a force to reckon with-- what a powerful voice and his songwriting was top-notch ("Walking Through The Country" & "I Can Turn Off The Rain" among many others). 1979, too vivid for me! First year out of high school, finding myself stationed overseas on high alert due to Iran's taking our embassy hostage, a short time later Russia invades Afghanistan, Olympics were cancelled, Carter re-starts military conscription-- yeah, my timing has never been anything to brag about (I recall thinking 'what in the hell have I gotten myself into?!'). As long as there were bright spots like this show, I can look back on this year and not coil in horror at the events that took place! Thanks, Chris, this is MUCH too cool!
