    Tell me Rob wasn’t one of the greatest entertainers ever for the rock and role error! Look at the power and heart he puts into every song he sings. You can see it in his facial expressions he is giving it all his got. He always loved what he did and we all loved him for it.
    He didn’t deserve his ending. He and the Roots will live on as long as there are fans of the era. Bless you Rob and the Grass Roots!

    Oh my God just to know that Robbie was in Valencia where I lived then as a young girl! He makes my heart beat triple time! Only Rob Grill, that's all I want to hear as lead singer with grassroots. END of story!!! OH, ROBBIE, you still HAUNT my dreams. I remember walking on foggy nights in Hermosa back to my apartment, from flirting and listening to Jazz at the Lighthouse, and next door to the End Zone for pool..... I loved when you came to town. It was delicious!

      @@scotthoyt8970 The first time I saw them was maybe 1972 - I was 12/13, at Disneyland with the family , was walking through Tomorrowland and a band was playing at the bandstand where Captain EO eventually was located - recognized my favorite band - so I stopped. Only problem, the family didn't - I did get into some trouble - family had a reservation for lunch Blue Bayou, that was missed. I don't recall how we ever met back up though.

    Back in ‘67 in SoCal, like many bands did, The Grass Roots visited record stores promoting their singles. I had never heard of them due to my love for British Blues, but when these guys played (Let’s Live For Today) live at my local record store, I became a huge fan. I kinda wish Dennis and Scott had stayed with Rob longer though, as the two are incredibly talented musicians and vocalist.

      Thanks for the kind words, Daniel. The only reason I didn't stay was because Rob, Warren and their record producer, Steve Barri, got me a solo record deal with Casablanca Records. Steve and Warren co-produced the album in late 1979 and we finished it in January of 1980. Unfortunately, for me, Casablanca Records was sold to Polygram Corporation and the record was shelved. It was never released. :-(

      None of those band members are in this video. That band you saw was Rob Grill's last version of the Grass Roots before he passed away: Dusty Hanvey on guitar and vocals; Larry Nelson on keyboards and vocals, Joe Dougherty on drums; and Mark Dawson on lead vocals and bass. Rob Grill and Rick Coonce have passed away. Warren Entner, Creed Bratton are still with us, as well as Dennis Provisor and Joel Larson.

      At that time, Rob had not been playing for a while. He was working on his solo “Uprooted” project and was managing the band at the time. Brian Carlyss was the bass player at that time, not to mention we had absolutely no rehearsal for the show. Rob and Dennis decided, pretty much, at the last minute, to do the show with us. We kinda went over a few things in the dressing room prior to the show to figure out what songs we wanted to do. I asked him if he wanted to play bass on any of the songs and said, “No way!” He and Dennis were, how can I put it?...feeling no pain. 😉. On top of this, all of our music gear (guitars, keyboards, drums, amplifiers..even our clothes had been stolen a few days prior to the taping. So, we were having to play on rented gear, which just added to the stress level. But, it came out well. A splendid time was had by all. We played about 45 minutes, but the producers selected which songs to use in the broadcast. I’d love to see the other stuff, like “Let’s Live For Today”. That was one the shows’ producers wanted us to play, but there was some kind of technical issue that nixed that one. I think we performed it twice but someone’s microphone kept cutting out.

      @@juliewester351, no I never did any albums with the Grass Roots. There was a plan to do another Grass Roots album in 1979 with Rob and Warren with their original producer, Steve Barri, producing it. But, Rob and Warren couldn't agree on the contract details and abandoned the idea. Warren, at the time, was running the old ABC/Dunhill Recording Studios. Steve had found a bunch of songs for them to record and had scheduled time away from his Warner Brothers duties to produce the record. Steve said something like, "Warren, you've got the studio. I have the songs and have blocked the time out to do the album like we used to do in the old days. All we need to do is find another singer." At that point Rob told Warren, "Hey, you should check out Scott Hoyt. He took my place out on the road and would be perfect!'. Warren tracked me down, out on the road, and asked if I'd be interested. I jumped at the chance. Warren asked if I could send him some photos of me along with some tapes of me singing, which I did. He listened and responded with, "How soon can you get out here to L.A.?" I told him that I could be there next week. He sent me an airline ticket and I flew out and we recorded three songs, that Warren and Steve pitched to several record labels. We ended up signing with Casablanca Records because of their history of spending alot of money on promotion. We finished the album and Casablanca Records was sold to Polygram Corporation. Polygram also bought several other labels at the same time. Now, with over 100 artists on their label, and the record business was in a slump, they started cutting artists, right and left. Casablanca cut Dr. Hook, Parliament, and several others. The only two artists they kept were KISS and Donna Summer. Any new artist, like me, got shelved indefinitely. Sadly, the record never came out.

    Looking like a lot of bands actually did in the late 1970's.
    By this point especially, none of the original members of the group were left (Bill Fulton was the original lead singer and is heard on "Where Were You When I Needed You," recorded in 1966 before Rob Grill took over). It's in fact, especially in later years why I believe the group was known as The Grass Roots Starring Rob Grill.

    • @scotthoyt8970
      @scotthoyt8970 5 лет назад +5

      Technically, the original "Grass Roots" were a pair of songwriters, P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, who wrote "Where Were You When I Needed You" and first recorded the song with P.F. singing the lead vocal. When the record started getting airplay, Sloan and Barri (who were staff writers for ABC/Dunhill) weren't interested in putting together a band or going on the road. They were under contract and just wanted to write songs. So, they went looking for a band to become "The Grass Roots". They found a group in San Francisco called "The Bedouins" who were quickly signed to ABC/Dunhill and changed their name to "The Grass Roots". This band featured Joel Larson on the drums, who went on to play in many later versions of the Grass Roots, and lead vocalist, Bill Fulton. Steve Barri erased P.F. Sloan's original vocal and had Bill Fulton re-sing it. The first "Grass Roots" album, produced by Steve Barri, contained this version of the song. The new band complained that they didn't want studio musicians playing on their records. THEY wanted to play on their own records! Jay Lasker, who ran the label, quickly showed them the door, and the search was on for a new "Grass Roots" band. They soon found a band called "The 13th Floor" in Los Angeles. ABC/Dunhill asked them, how would you like to be "The Grass Roots"? Since the Bill Fulton version of "Where Were You When I Needed You" had been a local hit in the Los Angeles area, "The 13th Floor" was familiar with the song and the group name. They jumped at the chance and became the latest version of "The Grass Roots". With Steve Barri producing, once again, they erased Bill Fulton's vocal from the original track and had Rob Grill re-sing it. It was re-released and became their first hit single and was included on the "Let's Live For Today" album. The rest is history. I guess the 3rd time is the charm, right? As for the "The Grass Roots starring Rob Grill", that came about when Rob bought out the "Grass Roots" name from the other band members. Rob Grill owned the name, outright, and hired various musicians throughout the years to back him. To my knowledge, his widow, Nancy Grill, now owns the name.

    • @scottblackhoyt

      “Where Were You When I Needed You” was not on the set list that night. Rob was feeling no pain that night and just launched into an impromptu version of the song, much to our surprise. We had no idea where he was going with the song, so we just jumped in and followed along. We were just winging it.
