Im 69 in 9 days. 3/4/1955 Can anyone tell me a greater period of time than the 60s, 70s, and even the 80s. The bands are way too numerous to try and name. I know we are prejudiced but seriously name a time period better. There is no one that has replaced the ones that either died or retired. No one. If you listen to music nowadays its probably been tampered with electronically.
I know what you mean, I'm 72 ,I just got back from Vietnam and heard this song for the first time. I was a professional drummer and toured and recorded with many popular groups of the day. In 73 I had the honor of backing up Jr walker, Archie bell and the drells , and the temptations . A 16 pc union band backed all 3 acts. It was an afternoon jazz festival. Later that night a bunch of us saw the raspberries I think it was the whiskey a go go. They were fantastic . Fighting cancer now, I would give all my tomorrow's to go back to those days. How blessed we were to have lived through that era🎉
Bill, thank you for your service. I have confidence that you and medical technology will be successful in battling cancer. Sending positive healing your way. Stay strong.
But there are some singers who sound better live than others. Pulling off strong vocals live is a little more difficult than in the studio, where vocals can be enhanced through production-and these days autotune.
I just heard he passed. I listened to a couple of his songs, and was transported to a much simpler time. In this case, the Summer of 1972, and I was about to start my senior year in HS.
I saw the Raspberries in Baltimore 1972. Actually went to their hotel room with my friend. She actually hooked up with Dave. I sat and watched Shenandoah with Jim (ouch...not the greatest movie to see with a stranger). Eric came in with a girl in a fur coat. Wally walked in and out doing laundry. The next day, I went back to the hotel. I believe it was Jim and Dave came out wanting to go see, I believe it was, Dave's uncle. I knew the address and they trusted me to take them, which I did. I swore I would never sell that car.
I love the music of the 70s. No other music can compare. It meant something. The kind of music to relax and unwind, or get down to it. The lyrics were moving and told a story. I listen to it as much as possible .
I was only in the 8th grade, but started listening to 70s music way earlier in age. I remember watching my older sister and my aunt who were a couple years apart getting ready for school (high school), putting on thier makeup and listening to the raspberries, Redbone, I fell in love with the music.

RIP Eric Carmen. He passed away tonight - March 11,2024. He was a fantastic singer and will be greatly missed. I was just watching some of his RUclips videos last week. So sad. 😢💔💔🙏
This is the first video I've seen The Raspberries perform live. A great performance, lots of energy, the guitar riffs are outstanding. These guys really put their heart and soul into their music. I only wish I was old enough in the early 70s to see this group in concert.
There is a great live video of them on Midnight Special (1973) performing: I Want To Be With You. They were four kids from Mentor (High School) Ohio who helped to create Power Pop Rock.
Eric Carmen is currently about 73. By today's standards with performers still going at 80 that is not old. I hope he hasn't decided to permanently retire and that he still records. 😀
I love this song that I could listen to it over & over again. Eric Carmen wrote his first song at 12 years old! He also wrote songs for others. When he went solo, he did really well. “All By Myself” & “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again” are good songs. He’s very gifted.
The individual parts of the song are not exceptionally difficult to learn - but try playing all of this live, with four people. All those chord changes, key modulations, harmonies, dynamics. Holy Cow, it is REALLY a challenging song.
@@Physics072 Because back in the day, a front man had to be a legitimate singer and the rest of the band had to be great musicians and back up vocalists...
The Raspberries were one of the bands that played at a local club we went to about every weekend. The Chesterland Hollabaloo, so many bands came through there. Great times.
Live version was pretty good, but listen to the studio version. It's got the rich backing vocals (perfected by the studio overdubs)... It's more refined, but still rocks and highlights the beautiful harmonies. This is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Got a lot of Elton John ( Saturday is all right for fighting) guitar , The Beatles. ( Come on , Come on) and The Beach Boys Harmonies all rolled into one cool track.
This guy has a mid-range tone in his voice that is extremely rare and he can rough it up smoothly on the spin of a dime -- bet he could knock out a hard rock tune with the best of 'em!
Eric Carmen has his own channel here on RUclips - pretty much all of the tracks from all of his recordings are there. Yeah - he flips from smooth ballad singer to rock screamer effortlessly - I never cease to be amazed at that! It's a real wheelhouse skill that he had! I love those hidden gems like "Inside Story" and "Spotlight"!
Brings tears to my eyes every time. This was the song with my first love. She just had turned 16 and my overtures of marriage must have scared her and I lost her after only a month. I NEVER loved anyone like that ever again. I just turned 70 so maybe I will be another Abraham. I only have to find a Sarah.
It’s amazing. He sounds as great live as he does on the studio version. I think he actually sounds better live. May he rest in peace! I miss those days.😢
Agree. I thought this song was from 1974. This masterpiece was released in 1972 and reached number 5 on Billboard's Top 100. This song is almost 50 years old.
RIP my friend 😢 You will be sorely missed. From a friend of the olden days of our Cleveland times. I still remember and always will, you playing this ❤
This song is a chronological mindf**k, and I mean that in the best possible way. The chorus sounds like something from the late 50's, most of the rest sounds like it's from the late 70's/early 80's - and it was all from 1974, I believe. Haunting and unique, I never tire of hearing it.
Never heard of this or the Raspberries, as it did nothing in the UK. Fast forward to 2019, and I'm sitting in a bar in Jacksonville FL, & it came on the juke box. It stopped me dead in my tracks and I had to walk over to the juke box to see what was playing. I can't understand for the life of me why it's unheard of in the UK. it's awesome!
RIP Eric🙏🏽🎸‼️My Brother, Jeff turn me on to the raspberries in the 70s then later on your solo career “I love both” You ROCK‼️You have joined my brother‼️🙏🏽🎸
That silver lame Eric Carmen is wearing is swoon worthy. One of the best power pop tracks of all time. Go all the way, with choir boy back up singing...Excellent musicians too!!!!!
@jerrylamont972 I turned 9 in 1970, and I remember all those songs so well. Such amazing music back then and so much variety. I am only now realizing how lucky we were ❤❤❤
I played this song in a cover band at age 15 in 1973 and still play it today. It’s one of my favorites and I feel lucky to have come of age when this song was brand new.
If you want to improve singing skills, RUclips KennTamplin, THE best vocal teacher in the country, I studied under him in my late 50's, tried out for The Voice, got accepted. Check him out.🎵🎶👍🔥
Eric Carmen was so cute. Miss the 70s . Inocent times back then we all wore crazy stuff it was so cool. I love this song . Good Memories. Ty Eric/Raspberries.👅💋
I GUESS ITS THE AMERICAN WAY WE FORGET HOW ARTIST OF THE PAST ENTERTAINED US UNTIL THERE GONE ERIC WAS ONE ARTIST THAT DESERVED SO MUCH MORE APPRECIATION THAN HE EVER RECIEVED,NICE THOUGH TO SEE THE BEAUTIFUL SENTIMENTS
It’s too bad Raspberries had such a short existence. I don’t think they got the Love they deserved. What talented musicians to pull that song off live and it sounds astonishing. Raspberries forever…RIP Eric you were a cool dude and a Patriot. You and Amy had a great rapport with your Fans. Thank you for bringing happiness to the world with your music.
I saw this band in 1974 when they came to my small hometown in SC towards the end of their run, and just before Eric Carmen went solo. I know the critics loved to hate on them, but honestly they were very good musicians.
1974 is the year I saw The Raspberries in Chicago at the Auditorium Theatre. They were the back-up band for Blue Oyster Cult and the crowd was brutal!! Talk about rude! Back then Chicago audiences could be real a$$-holes, throwing lit fireworks from the balconies down into the seats below, and on this night some dip-$hit flung a can of beer (Old Style) just missing the drummer. I agree that they did put on a good show in spite of the a$$-hats hating on them.
@@davidgibbs381 I still do not understand the hate for that band, and I was a rock and roll musician back in the 70's. I thought they were pretty good. I went to a lot of rock concerts back then and do remember when idiots thought it was a good idea to bring fireworks to a show in addition to getting so drunk/high they would throw up everywhere. I just wanted to enjoy the bands, but sometimes that was a challenge. I nearly got crushed to death at a Boston concert. GOOD TIMES! :-)
I was 9 years old when I bought this 45 in 1972. Couldn't figure out why my mom didn't approve of it 'til I was older. What an erotic song! One of my all time favs! Never get tired of listening to it!

BBC had banned it. Too explicit
Here's another great song from the Raspberries, also live, performed years later: "I Wanna Be With You" ruclips.net/video/XhpgjGYIYjk/видео.html
Oh hell? And this song was suggestive as well !!! Remember it well ……😈
RIP Eric🙏🏽🎸‼️My Brother, Jeff turn me on to the raspberries in the 70s then later on your solo career “I love both” You ROCK‼️You have joined my brother‼️🙏🏽🎸
That silver lame Eric Carmen is wearing is swoon worthy. One of the best power pop tracks of all time. Go all the way, with choir boy back up singing...Excellent musicians too!!!!!
Actually I think it's white satin. I totally agree about the "swoon worthy" no matter what fabric he's wearing! ;-)
I would not have known the singer is Eric Carmen. Remember him from another song `All by myself`.
Total epitome of the great 70’s pop sound …… ride captain ride, I’m your captain, green eyed lady , the rapper, I’m taken back I was 16 in 1970.
@jerrylamont972 I turned 9 in 1970, and I remember all those songs so well. Such amazing music back then and so much variety. I am only now realizing how lucky we were ❤❤❤
One of the greatest bands of all time... Eric Carmen was and still is a talented musician and gifted writer...
68 and still loving and remembering the good old days.😃
The Raspberries created some of the best power pop songs of all time. And they did it from right here in my hometown of Cleveland (Rocks), Ohio.
I always thought Cleveland was a cool place although I have never been there. Would surely like to visit there someday.
For that era, Badfinger was their only rival.
One of my most favorite songs of all times. Yea, a great voice!!
Absolutely
@@KK-mg2xe yeah
I saw Eric Carmen and The Raspberries in the early '70s at a concert at Indian Lake, Ohio. It left a lifetime of good memories.
I grew up in the '70s and assert that it was the best era for rock and pop, better than the '60s. Bruce Springsteen is a huge fan of the Raspberries
2 guitarists, bass and drummer and yet they make music that fills an arena like a full Orchestra!
Check him out.🎵🎶👍🔥
I was 16 in 1973.
Eric Carmen was so cute. Miss the 70s . Inocent times back then we all wore crazy stuff it was so cool. I love this song . Good Memories. Ty Eric/Raspberries.👅💋
maria smith before there were any "Name Brands"
wore lotsa bellbottoms & sandals I remember Maria !!
Innocent?nobody's innocent
When I 1st heard this song I thought it was Paul McCartney singing.
SO GLAD to find this live version of this perfect song. Chills.
I could listen to this song all day long! It's THAT GOOD!! God Bless ERIC CARMEN & THE RASPBERRIES 4EVER!!!!!!!!!🎼🎶🎶🎤
one of the best rock riffs ever..
I can name that tune in the first three chords! ;-)
I can do it in one 😉.
Eric Carmen and the Rasberries should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!! So should Johnny Rivers and so many others!
"released in July 1972" the year I graduated HS and one of the best ever years of my life... this song personifies that time.
I listened to this song when I was 16 - now 69 - I still sing to it!!!!
You can tell this is live, it's real good, you can hear how tight these guys played together.
The soundtrack of summer 1972!
RIP Eric, what a loss so many memories of your music, and such a under rated band
Whose still listening in 2019!!!???
Who is
Great song! Great harmony!!
(Raising my hand...)
Hell to the yeah!! 😎🎵💜🐧
This song is one the top rock songs every made. Sounds just as good today as it did in 1974. Carmen’s vocals were great.
Wow…miss the 70’s…best time in my life. Eric Carmen was AMAZING.. rest in peace old friend..
Eric Carmen - TOTAL HEARTTHROB!
GOOD TIMES! :-)
Who’s still listening in 2021 ✌🏼🎤
The most amazing underrated artist in American pop rock history, period.
My first album was the raspberries 1972. It smelled like raspberries
I was 9 years old when I bought this 45 in 1972. Couldn't figure out why my mom didn't approve of it 'til I was older. What an erotic song! One of my all time favs! Never get tired of listening to it!
me too.. no clue what they were singing about in 72
Me too .Never had a clue!
snickieb3 Oh man, I bet you played this song a few years later and practically spat your drink out! XD
Great "make out" song! LOL I was 18 when this came out!
+kgc114 I was like 11 or 12 when this was a hit. At the time, I thought he was saying "go on away". I'm surprised this song wasn't banned by some of the more conservative rock stations. But then maybe it was, who knows.
Just another great reason to love the 70s!!! 💜💙
Big time juke box favorite on a friday night at the bowling alley after the football game 1973.Classic.Turn it up!
Still have three of their albums and of course 8 tracks.Great songs!RIP Eric
How in the hell is this possible without that "autotune" shit?! Oh yeah....real talent.
