  • It's been a while since I made such a big mistake. Alas no one is immune! Slow down, triple check everything! I still think this jacket is very cute and I can't wait to wear it out for a day of antiquing to scare the vendors with my potential netrunning skills.

Even with the issue regarding the seam allowance (you turned that into an excellent teaching moment) the suit is brilliant. You’re such an inspiring artistic and I appreciate learning from you.

Honestly, the off-set side seam looks quite intentional. And it's great to know that even very experienced seamstresses make mistakes sometimes, so thank you for leaving that in :)

A friend gave me her grandmother's 1942 beaver fur coat which was kind EXCEPT she had removed the shoulder pads because she thought they looked "weird." They were quite integral to the garment (of course) and so now the shoulder seams are unraveling, and no one fixes furs anymore, so I have to learn to do it! All to say I support your "hard on fashion crimes" stance.

I'm not going to speak for our fabric wizard's own experience, but in drafting projects of my own I often spend 2-3 hours transferring patterns out of books and redrafting for my own messurements. Most of my projects are victorian era though so that may play into it as well. Really it is mostly just practice and how much of a perfectionist you are and how well the mockups go that determines the time for each project.

Well a normal pattern is a lot faster than these color blocked ones 😂 Around 40 minutes maybe? Depends on how complex something is, moving one dart? 5 minutes 😅 I am faster when I'm not filming as well

I don’t follow you necessarily for vintage, or futuristic, or 1890’s. I like all of those fashion styles but it’s your personal style that really keeps me here. There’s plenty of vintage I don’t like, but I specifically like your take on it. Im here for Bianca’s designs, not so much for the individual aesthetics that you dabble in

Sewing on an older machine definitely has its advantages in my experience. Mum's hand-crank 60s Singer would sew anything we put under the needle, from dungarees, to bridesmaid dresses, to weird stuff for Halloween. A modern machine would probably have had forty fits sewing this project, they get temperamental when you dare to change the type of thread you're using. This is why, as well as my modern machine, I made the decision to buy the same hand-crank model that mum had, it just plods along regardless with no theatrics.

@@expatpiskie It is the small parts that can be a problem and when they break it can be expensive. That why it is hard to buy a machine if you can not test it. :-(
If you have a working singer like the one you have I expect it to last longer then any machine you buy new today. I just wish that you could buy new one that was made like the old ones.

I love this! Any more, whenever I have to sew a million pieces together (and even when I sew only a few) I I cut, surge, and sew each piece to the next, in order, immediately. I used to do all my cutting, then all my surging, then all my pinning, then sew every thing, but darned if that wasn't a confusing mess when I had to piece several things. This was VERY RELATABLE! Beautiful end results, though! WOW!

Fabric choice is often a challenge but I actually like the stiffer look - it has a more industrial vibe - especially with those closures! Inspired. Indeed a drafting mistake is so unlike you but having watched you make these mistakes will probably mean the rest of us won't as we're more likely to remember not to... well, here's hoping 😏. BTW there were no cards popping up on my tablet? I have a colour blocked vintage blouse on my to sew list - I must get round to it. The pattern image has been saved for ages! Simplicity 2723 - although possibly a better option for someone like me who is more flatchested!

I do think it is important to not get in a "same same" familiar rut (though I also get the fear that views go down/ people might expect something different). In such a thing, how much you enjoy it does influence how enjoyable watching is.

Lovely and instructive video as usual. I've been quietly LOVING your content for a while, but I must beg, Bianca, please, please, PLEASE, stop trying to tell us -and yourself- that you are lazy.
You are quite extraordinarily productive in both finished outfits and produced video content. You are fastidious and so detail oriented where it counts and you know where and when to cut corners without having to make sacrifices, that's not being lazy! No one likes taking their pins out before running things through the machine, you have the experience to know when you can get away with it, that's not being lazy, it's putting in the hundreds of hours to know better.
I know that impostor syndrome is a thing, and it sucks to deal with for all of us, especially women and girls, but you do not have to apologize or make yourself smaller for having our attention. You have build such a supportive and lovely platform, I wish you could offer yourself the grace to be kind and supportive to yourself and to use your influence to model as much for the next generation of sewist and of talented young girls ready to put in an astonishing amount of work toward a creative public facing life.

Apparently I must have a weird geometric pattern design brain too, because when I was making my kefta, which is a princess seam design with a waist seam, and I wanted to eliminate the waist seam on a layer of wool interlining, I did pretty much the same thing to extend it down to just past my butt (that length was not intentional, just how much fabric I had from half a holey old wool horse coolout blanket). I also later used that same princess bodice block extension to make myself a housecoat. And am also using it to reverse-engineer a darted bodice block! I closed up the bottom because I don't have a small waist, and put all the dart into the side and from a preliminary mockup it's a good start!

Question: why don't you bag line just the sleeve, bag line the jacket, and then slip stitch the sleeve and body of the jacket together? Probably will be the same amount of hand stitching involved.
Great jacket even with the minor mistakes. Glad that you shared them with us - that even an experienced seamstress can make mistakes. My heart went out to you when this happened. 🥰

Oh my dear you are extraordinary! At about 4:37 in I have to pause and tell you that my aunt taught me how to work those angles by saying you do it “like this.” Logicians marvel at the audacious accuracy of those like you and her who create symmetry so effortlessly. Another gorgeous mind on RUclips, Adam Savage of Tested, says his programs are not howto as much as What Happened programs. I find yours often as such as well, which is far more genuinely human.

Very fun! I don't think the issue with the side seam ended up looking bad in the end, I quite like it, but wouldn't it have been fine to sew the waistline seam on the front panels again but taking double the seam allowance instead so that it's the correct length, I mean yeah that would require the headache of unpicking the top stitching etc so I guess that answers my question but still haha

If you want to tame your bangs just put a face cloth in very hot water (carefully) wring it out and plop it on your head. Leave it there until it starts to feel cool. That will steam your hair so that you can re style it without getting it soaking wet.
